  • Peeters Publishers Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum: State Pushkin Museum

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThis fascicule represents the second part of the first volume of Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum of the State Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts devoted to the coins of the Black Sea littoral. It comprises detailed descriptions and illustrations of the coin issues struck by the Greek cities situated on the western, southern and eastern shores of the Black Sea up to Roman times, thereby completing the publication of coin material from the circumpontic area stored in the Pushkin Museum. Despite the relative small number of coins (fewer than 500 pieces) there are quite rare specimens among them originating from important pre-revolutionary private collections such as those of Rozanov and Bobrinskii. Most of the coins have never been published before and will be of special interest to scholars.

Book SynopsisThis is the fourth volume of a series of ten books that discuss the collections of the Tropenmuseum and the histories and stories that accompany them. The books elucidate the often hidden backgrounds of a museum collection, discussing objects within their original context, social histories and their contemporary meaning. The main emphasis lies on the history of each collection, with its different collecting and presentation practices placed in a particular time and place. Each volume is richly illustrated with objects and photographs from the Tropenmuseum collection. Photographs of the Netherlands East Indies at the Tropenmuseum offers a comprehensive introduction to one of the most important collections of colonial photography in the world. There is no other collection at the Tropenmuseum which is so closely tied to the history of the institute itself. Photographs were already being collected in the late nineteenth century and have been continuously supplemented with new images to cre

  • Hong Kong University Press Objectifying China - Ming and Qing Dynasty

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisPorcelain, with its fine white body, delicately painted decoration and associations with China's culture and vast wealth, has long delighted and captivated people in the West, as well as across the whole of Asia and the Islamic world. This catalogue accompanies the exhibition Objectifying China: Ming and Qing Dynasty Ceramics and Their Stylistic Influences Abroad, held at the University Museum and Art Gallery of The University of Hong Kong. The work explores the production of Chinese porcelain and other ceramics for both export and the domestic market, and the many responses to these wares made overseas using local materials and decorative techniques. The objects are considered from a variety of perspectives: as the product of skilled artisans, valuable trade commodities, useful objects for daily life and as important evidence of cultural interaction.

Book SynopsisThe period of Egypt's Ramesside empire is best known for its foreign wars and monumental buildings but the chronological history of many of its rulers and pre-eminent priests and their genealogies was poorly understood. While it was not possible to fi x the chronology exactly, a combination of known dates or date ranges, such as for the accession of Ramesses II, and the determination of family trees that extended over a large period, enabled Bierbrier to present a much closer definition of the span of individual dynasties and their key figures than had been possible previously. That volume is reissued here in facsimile. An important source of information is the genealogical references on funerary statues and tomb paintings, though vocabulary used is limited and often ambiguous. There are also several types of statuary, set up by individuals for different purposes, most frequently by sons or descendants to cause the name of the deceased to live on, many of which may have been created be
