De Gruyter Der Schmerz des Vaters?: Die trinitarische Pietà

    1 in stock

  • Nietzsche-Archiv

    De Gruyter Nietzsche-Archiv

    1 in stock

1 in stock

Book SynopsisIs contemporary art’s recurring turn to a material with a rich tradition an attempt to free the precious metal from its historical heritage, from grandeur and pathos? Is the saying “all that glitters is not gold” thus put to a test by transferring or shifting the always sought-after, glittery material to other contexts? The exhibition Doré Vergoldet Gilded and accompanying catalogue bring together works of contemporary art that deal with gold as a material and colouring agent and thus reflect the notions of value and symbolic power connected with it. Artists: Antje Blumenstein, Olivia Breckemeyer, Ruth Campau, Marianne Engel, Luka Fineisen, Niklas Goldbach, Eckart Hahn, David Krippendorff, Claudia Kugler, Alicja Kwade, Andréas Lang, Via Lewandowsky, Michael Müller, Sebastian Neeb, Andrea Pichl, Johanna Reich, Julian Röder, Stéphanie Saadé, Michael Sailstorfer, Karin Sander, Karina Spechter, Henrik Strömberg, Philip Topolovac, Panos Tsagaris, Frauke Wilken, Andrea Winkler, Clemens Wolf, He Xiangyu. Book SynopsisFrank Stella (*1936) situates his oeuvre not only in the present. Abstraction or representation, simulacrum, sign, and ornament, as well as questions of surface and space have fascinated him anew time and again. The publication presents the following phases in his oeuvre in the context of the Museum Wiesbaden’s collection: the early works, the stripe paintings attributed to minimalism, the departure into space, and thus from the picture to the relief, as well as the use of ornament and arabesque. In interplay with current sculptures by the artist, not only the rigorousness of his oeuvre but also the relevance of his work until today is thus shown. Text in English and German.

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Schaubühne Berlin is one of the foremost German-language theatres and has a unique artistic profile. Between 2018 and 2022, renowned artists Christian Jankowski, John Bock, Olaf Nicolai, Katharina Sieverding, and Monica Bonvicini designed a series of posters for the theatre. The outcome: striking two-dimensional artworks that, when inserted into Berlin’s cityscape, created a kind of temporary urban exhibition. The array of artistic executions in the poster campaigns ranges from humorously grotesque scenes or fanciful tableaux featuring members of the ensemble to purely conceptual approaches devoid of any text or imagery, to posters that use round cut-outs to capitalise on their ever-changing impact in the urban space. This publication brings together for the first time all of the designs alongside accompanying texts and interviews. Authors: John Bock, Monica Bonvicini, Thomas Irmer, Christian Jankowski, Thomas Ostermeier, Antonia Ruder, Katharina Sieverding, Christian Tschirner Text in English and German.

  • Between One Line Katharina Hinsberg Monika

Kerber Verlag Between One Line Katharina Hinsberg Monika

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe shared medium of Katharina Hinsberg and Monika Gryzmala is drawing. The exploration of the line is central to the work of both artists. Many of these artworks transcend the traditional boundaries of the genre and, in their dynamic reach, take on an almost sculptural quality. While Katharina Hinsberg's lines dissect space with meticulous clarity, Monika Grzymala's imposing bundles of lines penetrate space with an eruptive power. The two artistic approaches are being shown together for the first time in the joint exhibition Between One Line at the Kunsthalle Mannheim. The accompanying catalogue was created through an ongoing dialogue between the two artists. Two sketchbooks formed the basis; the artists worked in them alternately, each visually interrupting one another, constantly striving to confront their colleague's preliminary drawing work with their own understanding of the line, and exploring their artistic potential through a collaborative practice.Text in English and German.

  • Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg

Hatje Cantz Nathalie Djurberg and Hans Berg

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisNathalie Djurberg (*1978) and Hans Berg (*1978) create animated worlds with objects, music and moving images – dreamlike realms where we might lose ourselves. Their playfully told fables hold both humour and darkness, putting any moral laws of gravity out of action. Djurberg’s vibrant stop-motion animations and sculpture groups accompanied by Berg’s electronic music form scenic installations in a surrealist vein. These intense chamber pieces enact fragments of memories repressed between innocence and shame, or feverish daydreams of role play and desire. The shadowy landscapes, sealed rooms and harshly-lit scenes of their films are inhabited by a group of possessed figures seemingly set on devouring one another. The exhibition and fully illustrated catalog describe an inner voyage, an attempt to make existence more understandable in a flow of impulses and impressions.Exhibitions: Moderna Museet, Stockholm, 16.6.–9.9.2018Museo d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto (MART), Rovereto, 5.10.2018–13.1.2019Kunsthalle Schirn, Frankfurt, 28.2.–26.5.2019

Book SynopsisHardly any other epoch in art history has been marked by as many profound changes as the Late Gothic was in the fifteenth century. Inspired by Netherlandish role models, depictions of light and shadow, body and space, became increasingly more realistic. Everyday life found entry into the arts. With the invention of printing, images and texts were distributed to an extent previously unheard of. Artists such as Nicolaus Gerhaert and Martin Schongauer became widely known and influenced the development of the visual arts throughout Europe and across all genres. Featuring a wide selection of works, the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin present the first extensive exhibition of Late Gothic art in the German-speaking regions. Its comparison and contrast of the various genres turns the catalogue into a handbook for the arts at the threshold of the modern era.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWithout a doubt, Picasso is one of the most important and versatile artistic personalities of the twentieth century. But how does a body of work become so successful, and how does it wind up in major collections, museums, and exhibitions? Not infrequently, it is the courage of individuals who recognize genius in the works and advocate for them in the face of conservatism and criticism. In Picasso’s case, this role in Germany fell to the Bremen art dealer Michael Hertz. His commitment in the post-war period is not only due to Picasso's exhibition at the documenta 3 in 1964, but also to the Kunsthalle Bremen, which has one of the most extensive collections of the artist’s prints. This volume brings together the outstanding printworks, including lithographs, linocuts, and artist’s books. Picasso’s oeuvre of prints can be regarded as a fascinating collection, in which can be read the triumph of the affordable medium in post-war Germany, as well as the dealer's strong commitment.

Book SynopsisThe title seems to announce a comprehensive encyclopedia: from A to Z, each and every object or material has the potential to become an element in one of Alexandra Bircken’s charged objects and installations. Whether it’s packaging materials, machine parts, or bones, everything finds a use—the organic as well as the inorganic, raw materials and industrially produced goods. The constant reference point in her artistic explorations is the human body and its contradictory relationship to the environment, as defenselessly at its mercy as it is dependent on it. This catalogue is the first to provide a comprehensive overview of Bircken’s sculptural practice from all creative periods, which here enter into a dialogue that explores the artist's multi-layered statements on surface, body, movement, shell, and skin.

Hatje Cantz Cézanne: Masterpieces from the Courtauld at KODE

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThere are some collectors who through foresight and dedication have built truly outstanding art collections and shared them widely as part of public museums. Among these were Samuel Courtauld in London and Rasmus Meyer in Bergen. At the heart of each man's collection were single artists who were their greatest passions: for Courtauld it was Paul Cézanne and for Meyer, Edvard Munch. This unique collaboration between KODE art museums in Bergen and The Courtauld in London, celebrates these two remarkable collectors and two great artists by showing masterpieces by Cézanne in Bergen and Munch in London. The Courtauld is home to some of the most important paintings by Cézanne, such as The Card Players and Montagne Sainte-Victoire. “Cézanne. Masterpieces from The Courtauld at KODE Art Museum” is the story about how collectors and artists became aware of Cézanne. This publication not only presents ten key works from The Courtauld along with Cézannes from Norwegian collections, it also brings them together with eye witness accounts from the early years of his profound influence, seen through the lens of the Norwegian art scene around 1900. With essays by Barnaby Wright, Øystein Sjåstad and Karen Serres and an introduction by Line Daatland. Forewords by Petter Snare and Ernst Vegelin van Claerbergen.

Book SynopsisEdward Hopper’s world-famous paintings articulate an idiosyncratic view of modern life. With his impressive subjects, independent pictorial vocabulary, and virtuoso play of colors, Hopper continues to influence to this day the image of the United States in the first half of the twentieth century. He began his career as an illustrator and became famous around the globe for his oil paintings. They testify to his great interest in the effects of color and his mastery in depicting light and shadow. The Fondation Beyeler is devoting its large exhibition in the spring of 2020 to Hopper’s iconic images of the vast American landscape. The catalogue gathers together all of the paintings, watercolors, and drawings from the 1910s to the 1960s on display in the exhibition, and supplements them with essays focused on the subject of depicting landscape. EDWARD HOPPER (1882–1967) is the master of American Realism. His paintings captured life during his era. His method of painting rapidly became the stylistic foundation of a type of American modernism. Book SynopsisLike hardly any other artist, Pierre-Auguste Renoir has shaped our understanding of the atmospheric figure paintings of Impressionism. His painting La fin du déjeuner, which has been in the Städel Museum in Frankfurt since 1910, is now the starting point for a far-reaching examination of an important source of inspiration that accompanied him throughout his life: the Rococo. Considered frivolous and immoral after the French Revolution, this style of painting experienced a renaissance in the 19th century and was widely celebrated during Renoir’s lifetime. Published on the occasion of the Städel Museum’s major exhibition, this comprehensive volume explores Renoir’s multifaceted connection to tradition through illuminating juxtapositions of his art with 18th-century works and contemporaries.

Book SynopsisNevin Aladag lets wind and rain play music. She follows the sound of traces she finds in the city and makes objects sound melodies seemingly by themselves. The result is a perceptive and always humorous "score" that has a quality that is as ironic as it is poetic. Aladag's works are represented in many international collections and are regularly shown in exhibitions and biennials worldwide. The Museum Villa Stuck is showing her most comprehensive solo presentation to date, combining famous groups of works, such as the "Music Room Athens" shown at documenta 14, with a few surprises. The accompanying catalogue offers over 200 mostly full-page illustrations. Essays by renowned art scholars such as Rachel Jans and Adam Szymczyk and a contribution by the multi-award-winning writer Ulrike Draesner, conceived especially for the book, illuminate the artist's work from different perspectives. The special embossing that Aladag developed for the cover gives the publication a special artistic touch.

The exhibits selected shed new light on Ungerer’s oeuvre by making it possible to comprehend the artistic dimension of the political and stylistic lines and breaks in his oeuvre as a ‘freewheeling artist’. His passion for experimenting across genres and the interplay between drawing, collage, and assemblage through which he searched for identity and humanity is thus shown in his work again and again. Developed by the Deichtorhallen Hamburg / Sammlung Falckenberg in cooperation with the Tomi Ungerer Estate and the Musée Tomi Ungerer in Strasbourg, the volume brings together contributions on Tomi Ungerer’s life’s work by Thomas David, Belinda Grace Gardner, Aria Ungerer, and Thérèse Willer, with a foreword by Dirk Luckow and Harald Falckenberg.

Book SynopsisThe collections of the Museum der Kulturen Basel contain numerous fragments that bear witness to practices of sharing and connecting. They include fragments from history, remnants of destruction, and once powerful objects made up of single parts. The publication shows how these things were handled in the past, and still are today. It sheds light on what it means to divide, repair, reassemble, even to let something fall apart. Whichever, it is always a matter of (re)storing or creating a new order. Instead of seeing fragments exclusively as signs of loss or as witnesses to the inexorable passage of time, the authors focus on the power of connecting, the art of separating, and the force of destruction in the pieces presented.

Book SynopsisContemporary art, as well as our society in general, is - according to the diagnosis of the interdisciplinary art festival steirischer herbst ’21 - in a dead end. The Way Out of... features texts by international contributors to the festival’s discussion program that outlines ways out of the white cube, failed political art, and an unrestrained digital capitalism, and shows new paths for climate justice, a more critical race theory, and new activists. Accessible and pointedly written, this reader offers rich food for thought on the multiple crises of our times.
