Table of ContentsBezugsrahmen Migration.- Bezugsrahmen Ressourcen.- Empirie auf Grundlage verschiedener Biographien.

Book SynopsisThe volume features the work of leading scholars from the US, UK, Germany, China, Spain, and Russia and presents an important contribution to current debates on world literature. The contributions discuss various facets of the historically changing role and status of language in the construction of notions of universality and locality, of difference, foreignness, and openness; they explore the relationship between world literature and bilingualism, supranational languages, dialects, and linguistic inbetweenness. They also examine the larger social and political stakes behind both foundational and more recent attempts to articulate ideas of world literature. Mapping the space between philology, anthropology, and ecohumanities, the essays in this volume approach world literature with sophisticated methodological toolkits and open up new opportunities for engaging with this important discursive framework.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements.- Contributors.- Preface.- Part I.- Toward a Global Philology.- World Literature – Theory – Translation: Considerations on a Fraught Relationship.- World Literature in China: Aspiration, Anxiety and Some Theoretical Questions.- Part II.- Arabic, American and/or World Literature: Kahlil Gibran’s Bilingualism and the Problem of Reception.- The Translational Movement of the Anglophone Gibran into Arabic, or “Arabization.- J.M. • Beyond the Green Myth: Borneo's Hunter-Gatherers

NIAS Press Beyond the Green Myth: Borneo's Hunter-Gatherers

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisBorneo, with its tales of White Rajahs and tribes of headhunters, has long excited the Western imagination. Today, however, there is another, 'green', imagination at work. Mention of the island is more likely to evoke images of tropical deforestation and concern about the cruel dispossession and displacement of indigenous peoples who once lived in relative harmony with their environment. It is perhaps not surprising, then, that most books dealing with the nomadic hunter-gatherers of Borneo have principally been pictorial studies. There is indeed a dearth of scholarship regarding these peoples, a situation that this first ever, comprehensive review of nomadic groups in the Borneo rain forest aims to rectify. Presenting a wealth of new research contributed by an inter-national team of scholars, the volume covers all those parts of Borneo where nomads (called Penan, Punan or by various other names) are or were known to exist, and provides a comparative historical-ecological study of these groups. The study is primarily concerned with issues of modernization (including the monetary economy, formalised institutions, centralized power structures, contractual relationships and extraction activities) and development policies. The impact of these policies is analysed with special regard to the natural environment inhabited by these small-scale societies, as well as the use of its resources. The book has no stiff theoretical orientation but informs ongoing debates about changing forms of ethnicity, relations between minorities and the state, minorities' rights and survival, native discourse, the sustainability of tropical forest use, and the neo-romantic environmentalist myth of so-called wise traditional peoples.Table of ContentsForeword (Kirk Endicott) 1. • NIAS Press Departing from Java: Javanese Labour, Migration and Diaspora: 2018

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFrom colonial times through to the present day, large numbers of Javanese have left their homes to settle in other parts of Indonesia or much further afield. Frequently this dispersion was forced, often with traumatic results. Today, Javanese communities are found as close as Kalimantan and as far away as Suriname and the Netherlands. Meanwhile, migrant workers from Java continue to travel abroad, finding short-term employment in places like Malaysia and the Middle East. This volume traces the different ways in which Javanese migrants and migrant communities are connected in their host society and with Java as a real or imagined authoritative source of norms, values and loyalties. It underlines the importance of diaspora as a process in order to understand the evolving notions of a Javanese homeland across time and space. Even though Java as the point of departure links the different contributions, their focus is more on the process of migration and the experiences of Javanese migrants in the countries of destination. Clearly, the labour element dominates the Indonesian overseas experience. But the volume also elucidates how ethnicity, class, gender, religion and hierarchy have shaped and still inform the dynamics of diasporic communities. Many of the chapters pay particular attention to gender as women now form the majority of international migrants, domestic work being the largest category of transnational work. As a result, important aspects of the migration experience are seen in new ways via the lens of women’s experiences.

  • Living Kinship, Fearing Spirits: Sociality among

NIAS Press Living Kinship, Fearing Spirits: Sociality among

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisHow can we conceive of kinship and sociality in the rapidly transforming uplands of mainland Southeast Asia? How to write about kinship in a way that neither falls into the trap of taking for granted kinship phenomena nor ignores the body of knowledge from earlier research? This in-depth study uses its rich findings from extensive fieldwork among the Khmu, upland dwellers of northern Laos, to bridge the divide between classical ethnography and modern approaches to kinship studies. Here, the author offers a fresh perspective on kinship by, first of all, stepping backwards and delving into how it is actually lived locally in northern Laos. She highlights that not only the beginning of life but also its ending deserves our attention when considering the relevance of kinship. Indeed, to a considerable extent, living kinship is about death. The context of kinship and sociality among the Khmu is significant here, these being framed by ties of matrilateral cross-cousin marriage and patrilineal descent - concepts on which this study casts new light. Dr Stolz explores this complexity in an absorbing series of intimate and self-reflective accounts. These touch upon a variety a topics, beginning with the language of kinship, then proceeding to examine the house, the changing importance of kinship throughout the life cycle, the key roles that gifting and commensality play, the meaning of work and, finally, to offer glimpses of the intricacies of village sociality and its cosmological dimensions. The underlying approach here is asking how the nature and praxis of kinship bring us closer to understanding what it means to live kinship - not just in upland northern Laos but in other societies as well. This is a significant study, one of long-term significance.

Zubaan A Passionate Life – Writings by and on Kamladevi

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisKamaladevi Chattopadhyay was a remarkable woman a gifted writer and an activist central to the making of the modern Indian nation. India's representative to the Global South for many years after independence, Kamaladevi figured prominently in discussions of and studies on Indian women and independence. But in more mainstream histories she remains relatively unknown. A Passionate Life brings together for the first time a collection of Kamaladevi's writings on the subjects closest to her heart. These essays include a close look at the lives of tribal peoples in India, the sustaining of handicrafts and handicraft workers, and issues of history. In doing so, the volume questions not only our methods of writing and recovering history which leave out lives as important as hers but also shows how the surfacing of histories like Kamaladevi's can enrich, expand, and add nuance to our understanding of the making of modern India. Crucial new essays and commentary by the editors accompany Kamaladevi's writings.

  • University of the West Indies Press Ties that Bind: The Black Family in Post-Slavery Jamaica, 1834-1882

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisTies That Bindsignals a shift from the traditional focus by historians of the family on family forms and structure and instead assesses the relationships and interactions within Black family networks in the landscape of post-slavery Jamaica. Chronicled throughout this book are the issues which were intrinsic to the freed people’s notion of family well-being, including the need to reconstitute members separated by slavery, attainment of secure shelter, access to land and education for their children, assertion of parental control, autonomy over family labour and liberty and reclaiming the dignity and personhood of family members.Presented here is evidence which challenges several stereotypical misrepresentations of the attitudes which Blacks had towards their families. The book is replete with cases of Black mothers and fathers, who by dint of their own persistence and sacrifice, ensured that their children had access to health care and education, thereby challenging contemporary stereotyping of Black parents as irresponsible and neglectful. In today’s context when social researchers are still focussed on trying to find the “invisible and marginal” Black male, the book presents abundant evidence of male activism on behalf of family and locates him as significant and central in the activation of his familial roles. Irrespective of challenges facing the family, the fact that so many Black Jamaicans engaged in some form of family advocacy in the worst of times, as well as in the best of times, affirms the endurance of the ties that bind, a theme which is central to this work.

  • Institute of Southeast Asian Studies The Karen Revolution in Burma: Diverse Voices,

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis study analyzes the various types and stages of conflict that have been experienced by diverse groups and generations of Karen over the six decades of armed conflict between the Karen National Union (KNU) and successive Burmese governments. Instead of focusing on those who are internally displaced, those in the refugee camps on the Thai-Burma border or living abroad, or those in the KNU, it places particular emphasis on the 'other' Karen - the majority segment of the Karen population living inside Burma - a population that has hitherto received little scholarly and journalistic attention. It also assesses the Karen people's varied attitudes towards a number of political organizations that claim to represent their interests, towards successive Burmese military regimes, and towards the political issues that led to the original divide between the 'accommodators' and 'rebels'. This study argues that the lifestyles and strategies that the Karens have pursued are diverse and not confined to armed resistance. Acknowledging these multiple voices will not only shed light upon the many positive features of ethnic interactions, including harmonious communal relationships and significant attempts to promote peace and stability by encouraging 'normal' activities and routines in both peaceful and war-torn areas; it will also help to identify policy recommendations for future ceasefire negotiations and a possible long-term political settlement within the context of a militarised Burma.

  • Institute of Southeast Asian Studies Civil Society In Burma: The Development Of

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisBurma faces a complex of interlinked humanitarian, social, and political crises. The situation is especially grave in areas populated by ethnic minorities, many of which have been affected by decades of armed conflict, and in the Irrawaddy Delta, where in May 2008 some 130,000 people were killed and over two million made homeless by Cyclone Nargis. The military government is deeply unpopular, and further episodes of mass protest similar to those that occurred in August and September 2007 cannot be ruled out. However, strategic options for elite-level regime change in the country remain limited. Therefore, local and international actors should focus on incremental approaches to democratisation, and in particular on the roles of local communities and NGOs. The past decade has seen an expansion of previously dormant civil society networks, especially within and between ethnic nationality communities. This development has been particularly significant in areas affected by ceasefires between armed ethnic groups and the military government. The capacities and strategic importance of local NGOs were demonstrated by the impressive civil society responses to the cyclone. At the local level, models of community participation and the promotion of democracy from below can help to transform state-society relations and patterns of governance, including in ceasefire areas. At the national/elite level, the development of civil society is a prerequisite for sustainable democratic change.Although the promotion of civil society is necessary, it is not sufficient to achieve social and political transition in Burma. Furthermore, community networks are vulnerable to suppression by the militarised state and by armed nonstate actors. Such tendencies were demonstrated during the national referendum of May 2008, when the government engineered the endorsement of a new constitution designed to consolidate and perpetuate military rule. The challenge for the international community is to work within the constricted environment of military-ruled Burma in ways that promote positive change - but without exposing local partners to unacceptable risks.

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisSingapore had to build a military from scratch starting in 1965, with compulsory national service introduced in 1967. This is the story of the Singapore Armed Forces in the form of a collective portrait of its leaders. Tens of thousands of Singaporeans (overwhelmingly men) were commissioned as officers between 1965 and 2018, but only 170 individuals served as flag officers in this period. What Sets Singapore's Generals and Admirals apart? Why did they join the military? What motivated them to stay? How do they explain and understand their career and their individual choices? How are their roles changing as Singapore's society becomes more prosperous and complex? What role do they expect to play after they leave the military? In a society where the majority Chinese population traditionally devalued military careers, and where military service was associated with foreign occupiers and colonisers, how did Singapore build a culture of leadership for its armed forces? What role did the SAF Scholars scheme, introduced in 1971, play in forming this culture?Given their prominence, and their portrayal by political leaders as an "aristocracy of talent", it is no surprise that myths about the military leadership abound. This book takes on the myths directly, through 28 interviews with flag officers, and analysis of the history and structure of the Singapore Armed Forces. Inspired by the 1971 Morris Janowitz classic, The Professional Soldier: A Social and Political Portrait, this book provides a rare window on an exceptional institution.

  • Wayang and Its Doubles: Javanese Puppet Theatre,

NUS Press Wayang and Its Doubles: Javanese Puppet Theatre,

Book SynopsisMuch has been said about how Javanese puppet theatre, Wayang Kulit, richly reflects the Javanese world, and how changes and tensions in performance practice mirror those in culture and society. For decades, television has been as intensely part of the Javanese world as Wayang. This book explores the ways two complex media and modes of being, seeing and fantasising, with their different cultures, coexist and meet, and haunt or invade each other. It is what what a Javanese commentator calls a 'difficult marriage' — intimate on the one hand, deeply alienating on the other, institutionalised yet at the same time mercurial and shifting. This encounter is explored on many levels including performance aesthetics, the technicalities of television production, issues of time, space, light, place, and movement, audience experience of live and televised performances, and the collaboration and struggle between performers and television producers. Central to the book are personal perspectives and experiences, as well as Javanese discussions surrounding the interaction between Wayang and television and their cultures. They are brought into a conversation with reflections on media and technology by writers such as Karl Marx, Martin Heidegger, Maurice Merleau-Ponty, Jacques Derrida, Paul Virilio, and James Siegel. Wayang's relationship with television is considered in the context of the theatre's intercourse with older and newer media, including electricity, radio, audio- and video-recording, the internet and social media.

Book SynopsisThe first full-scale sociological survey of the assimilation of minorities in America, this classic work presents significant conclusions about the problems of prejudice and discrimination in America and offers positive suggestions for the achievement of a healthy balance among societal, subgroup, and individual needs.Trade ReviewImportant and entirely admirable....Gordon's review of theories of Anglo-conformity, the melting pot, and cultural pluralism is the best I have ever seen. Specialists in intergroup relations will find Gordon's book a most useful addition to their personal bookshelves and an indispensable newcomer to their pedagogical repertoire. * American Sociological Review *
