Rutgers University Press The Great White Way: Race and the Broadway
Book SynopsisBroadway musicals are one of America’s most beloved art forms and play to millions of people each year. But what do these shows, which are often thought to be just frothy entertainment, really have to say about our country and who we are as a nation? Now in a new second edition, The Great White Way is the first book to reveal the racial politics, content, and subtexts that have haunted musicals for almost one hundred years from Show Boat (1927) to Hamilton (2015). This revised edition includes a new introduction and conclusion, updated chapters, as well as a brand-new chapter that looks at the blockbuster musicals The Book of Mormon and Hamilton. Musicals mirror their time periods and reflect the political and social issues of their day. Warren Hoffman investigates the thematic content of the Broadway musical and considers how musicals work on a structural level, allowing them to simultaneously present and hide their racial agendas in plain view of their audiences. While the musical is informed by the cultural contributions of African Americans and Jewish immigrants, Hoffman argues that ultimately the history of the American musical is the history of white identity in the United States. Presented chronologically, The Great White Way shows how perceptions of race altered over time and how musicals dealt with those changes. Hoffman focuses first on shows leading up to and comprising the Golden Age of Broadway (1927–1960s), then turns his attention to the revivals and nostalgic vehicles that defined the final quarter of the twentieth century. He offers entirely new and surprising takes on shows from the American musical canon—Show Boat (1927), Oklahoma! (1943), Annie Get Your Gun (1946), The Music Man (1957), West Side Story (1957), A Chorus Line (1975), and 42nd Street (1980), among others. In addition to a new chapter on Hamilton and The Book of Mormon, this revised edition brings The Great White Way fully into the twenty-first century with an examination of jukebox musicals and the role of off-Broadway and regional theaters in the development of the American musical. New archival research on the creators who produced and wrote these shows, including Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Robbins, Stephen Sondheim, and Edward Kleban, will have theater fans and scholars rethinking forever how they view this popular American entertainment. Trade Review“From Show Boat to Hamilton, from Oklahoma! to The Book of Mormon, Warren Hoffman provides an engaging and insightful analysis of how race has shaped 20th and 21st-century musical theatre. His perceptive and persuasive readings foreground normative whiteness and underline how every musical is “about” race. Required reading for the musical theatre student and aficionado alike.” -- Stacy Wolf * author of Changed for Good: A Feminist History of the Broadway Musical *“Warren Hoffman’s new edition of The Great White Way remains as provocative, smart, challenging and entertaining as the original publication. Hoffman’s book is, in some sense, like a Broadway musical itself — surprising in its many and varied elements, opinions, defenses and prosecutions. The role of race in the history of Broadway has, I’m sure, never been more thoroughly or more judiciously explored. And it’s a terrific read.” -- Jack Viertel * author of The Secret Life of the American Musical *"Warren Hoffman delivers a comprehensive and robust examination of the American musical as a purveyor of white identity and privilege. Easy to read and adept at elucidating the complexities of race in performance, The Great White Way is straightforward and unapologetic. Within it, Hoffman contextualizes the racial disparities embedded in the art form and acknowledges the musical’s powerful and irresistible place in the public imagination. This book belongs on the shelf of any theater maker or scholar who seeks to decolonize sites of theater production and pedagogy." -- Rena M. Heinrich * University of Southern California *"This revised edition brings The Great White Way fully into the twenty-first century with an examination of jukebox musicals and the role of off-Broadway and regional theaters in the development of the American musical." * Broadway World *"There have been musicals produced on Broadway that have had subject matter that reflect diversity but it is Hoffman’s analysis that Broadway has yet to fully embrace diversity or taking risks. It seems that the non-profit theatre companies are more likely to take such risks. Hoffman’s analysis is worth pondering." * Mark Kappel Dance *"As ‘West Side Story’ returns to Broadway, it has a lot to say about race in America," by Warren Hoffman https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/2020/02/20/west-side-story-returns-broadway-it-has-lot-say-about-race-america/ * Washington Post *"MAXAMOO BOOK CLUB: THE GREAT WHITE WAY – RACE AND THE BROADWAY MUSICAL" podcast interview with Warren Hoffman http://www.maxamoo.com/podcast/maxamoo-book-club-the-great-white-way-race-and-the-broadway-musical/ * Maxamoo Book Club podcast *Broadway Radio interview with Warren Hoffman * Broadway Radio *"The Lost Origins of Broadway's West Side Story," an excerpt from The Great White Way https://therevealer.org/the-lost-origins-of-broadways-west-side-story/ * The Revealer *"White Supremacy and the Broadway Musical" by Warren Hoffman https://medium.com/@whoffman18/white-supremacy-and-the-broadway-musical-a44ebd1b0f08 * Medium *"You've Got To Be Carefully Taught" BBC 2 interview with Warren Hoffman * BBC 2 - "You've Got To Be Carefully Taught" *Table of ContentsContents Preface to the Second Edition Overture: All Singin’! Orion Publishing Co Pratt G My Bass and Other Animals
Book SynopsisGuy Pratt''s life as bass player to the stars. The book behind the successful comedy show.Guy Pratt came of age just as playing bass became cool, with the likes of Paul Simonon and Bruce Foxton. Having dallied with Funkapolitan, Pratt suddenly found himself on Top of the Pops and supporting David Bowie with smooth Australian outfit Icehouse. At a ludicrously young age Guy Pratt became a sought after bass player to the stars, finding himself crawling from studio to bar, from hotel to stadium portacabin with Robert Palmer, Womack & Womack, Bernard Edwards, Bryan Ferry and David Crosby, etc. The eighties were in their prime, and with a number of Crolla-suited appearances in windswept videos behind him, he was invited to join Pink Floyd for a series of stadium of extravaganzas to make Bono & co look fairly modest. Pratt has recorded with Madonna, and spent time in the studio with Michael Jackson. He was in The Smiths for a week, has travelled through customs in a wheelchair after a flight with Jimmy Page, and has lived to tell all. MY BASS AND OTHER ANIMALS emerges from the successful stand-up tour of the same name. It charts his journey from a Mod band in Southend to playing with Roxy Music at Live 8.Trade Reviewan involving and frequently hilarious account * South Wales Argus *

Basic Books Music: A Subversive History
Book SynopsisThe phrase "music history" likely summons up images of long-dead composers, smug men in wigs and waistcoats, and people dancing without touching. In Music: A Subversive History, Gioia responds to the false notions that undergird this tedium. Traditional histories of music, Gioia contents, downplay those elements of music that are considered disreputable or irrational-its deep connections to sexuality, magic, trance and alternative mind states, healing, social control, generational conflict, political unrest, even violence and murder. They suppress the stories of the outsiders and rebels who created musical revolutions and instead celebrate the mainstream assimilators who borrowed innovations, diluted their impact, and disguised their sources. Here, Gioia attempts to reclaim music history for the riffraff, the insurgents, and provocateurs-the real drivers of change and innovation. In Music, Gioia tells the four-thousand-year history of music as a source of power, change, upheaval, and enchantment. He shows how social outcasts have repeatedly become the great trailblazers of musical expression: slaves and their descendants, for instance, have repeatedly reinvented music in America and elsewhere, from ragtime, blues, jazz, R&B, to bossa nova, soul, and hip hop. A revolutionary and revisionist account, Music: A Subversive History is essential reading for anyone interested in the meaning of music.

Yale University Press The Northern Silence
Book SynopsisAn essential exploration of Nordic composers and musicians, and the distinctive culture that continues to shape themTrade Review“The Nordic lands have become a musical powerhouse, from Grieg and Sibelius to Björk and Eurovision winners. Over a decade or more a passion for all things northern has taken Mellor on an exploration of Nordic culture, its folklore and landscapes, the Nordic noir mindset and, above all, its musical richness.”—Richard Fairman, Financial Times, “Best summer books of 2022: Classical music”"Andrew Mellor’s The Northern Silence: Journeys in Nordic Music and Culture (Yale) brings together, with a discoverer’s verve and an expert’s attentive accuracy, the paradox behind the five Nordic countries’ artistic achievements. Their awed reverence for nature, combined with deep respect for preceding generations, goes with insistence on maintaining progressive institutions for the furtherance of the arts. Mellor compellingly presents their stress on music in school curriculums, their training of musicians and their widespread provision of conducive buildings and locations."—Paul Binding, Times Literary Supplement 'Books of 2022'“The book is above all a profuse and expert love letter to music and life in the Nordic countries. Mellor’s expertise in and enthusiasm for his subject comes clearly across in the text.”—Lasse Lehtonen, Finnish Music Quarterly“Above all, The Northern Silence is an extraordinary achievement for Mellor’s ability on the one hand to find commonalities among disparate threads, and on the other to tease out the implications of a single theme: neither with any expectation of a definitive answer.”—Will Yeoman, Limelight“In [Mellor’s] free-ranging journeys through the region, people, places and history, sounds and silences tumble over each other in an excitement of discovery against the backdrop of landscapes that are as psychological as they are elemental—and broodingly intense.”—Steph Power, BBC Music Magazine“There’s no aspect of Scandinavian or Nordic life that doesn’t illuminate Mellor’s understanding of the whole. . . . In short, then, the best kind of music book—one that takes literally Nielsen’s declaration that ‘Music is life,’ and makes it the heart and soul of something infinitely wider and more fascinating.”—Richard Bratby, Gramophone“This magical part of the world is Mellor’s home and this book is a journey in his company, basking in his knowledge and passion for music and people. . . . It’s a walk through a forest listening to thoughts and stories and the silences.”—Fiona Talkington, Songlines“This absorbing read says a great deal for Mellor’s breadth of outlook and his depth of sympathies. In the Prelude and Postlude, the reaching-out of Sibelius’s masterpiece Tapiola towards silence is pertinently considered as exemplifying Nordic culture. Hopefully this book’s authorial voice will stay resilient for a long while yet.”—Richard Whitehouse, Arcana.fm“Mellor brings to his accounts of Grieg, Nielsen and Sibelius stimulating freshness of approach. But he also writes compellingly—and with galvanising attention to detail—about those composers not as yet hallowed by time.”—Paul Binding, Anglo-Norse Review“The Northern Silence is a compelling take on music and its place in a society . . . It deserves to be read by anyone interested or involved in the arts today, or by anyone concerned by the direction in which Western, and not just Nordic countries, appear to be going."—Stuart Millson, The Quarterly Review“Andrew Mellor leads us on an evocative journey through the rich and sonorous pine forest of Nordic music, acting as our faithful and knowledgeable guide and discovering treasures at every turn.”—Víkingur Ólafsson, Pianist“A sense of deep listening and of silence underpins this brilliant book; an impressive thought-map of interconnected journeys, from the forest to the heart of the Nordic psyche. Mellor presents his insightful ideas with an intensely personal clarity, one that seems infused with the crisp, clean air of the Nordic wilderness.”—Tansy Davies, composer“An outstanding account. Andrew Mellor takes us on a sonic journey that is as ferociously thrilling and uncommonly beautiful as the Nordic landscape which he now calls home. Fascinating, nuanced and ear-opening. I am listening anew.”—Clemency Burton-Hill, broadcaster, musician, and author“I have long admired and respected Andrew Mellor’s work. He always writes with a deep knowledge and love of his subject matter and his particular expertise in the field of Nordic music is unparalleled.”—Leif Ove Andsnes, pianist“I was entranced by this pitch perfect journey through Scandinavia, evoking the people, the places and most uniquely, the music; inspired by the silence and the snow, the long, dark winters and frantic bursts of summer that make life and culture feel so visceral there.”—Mariella Frostrup, broadcaster and author

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC My Shakespeare
Book SynopsisTHE TIMES'' BEST BOOKS OF THE YEARThis book charts the personal and professional journey of Greg Doran, Artistic Director of the Royal Shakespeare Company from 2012 until 2022 and one of the great Shakespearians of his generation (Sunday Times). During his illustrious career, Doran has directed or produced all of the plays within Shakespeare''s First Folio -- a milestone reached in the same year that the world celebrates the 400th anniversary of its original publication. Each chapter looks at a different play, considering the choices made and weaving in both autobiographical detail and background on the RSC, as well as giving insights into key collaborations, including those with actors such as Judi Dench, David Tennant, Harriet Walter, Patrick Stewart, Simon Russell Beale, Paterson Joseph and Doran''s husband, the late Antony Sher, as well as seminal practitioners such as Cicely Berry, John Barton and Terry Hands. The book also includes 16 striking pages with stills frTrade ReviewThis career retrospective, centred on the Folio, reflects Doran’s temperament: decent, diligent, likeable, lucid. It’s openly learned, plunging into a close reading of Romeo and Juliet’s prologue, but it’s also candid. -- Dominic Cavendish * The Telegraph *It has given me so much joy to read the story of Greg Doran's journey through these great plays. Fantastic, informative, revealing, occasionally gossipy and thoroughly engrossing, this is a remarkable memoir of a remarkable career. Greg Doran’s brilliance, clarity of thought and – most of all – his humanity shines through. * David Tennant *One of the distinctive achievements of Greg Doran’s recently concluded term as artistic director of the Royal Shakespeare Company was to direct all the plays in the First Folio, creating a deposit of excellent, thoughtful renderings. His recollections and reflections on these productions are collected in My Shakespeare. Some chapters are almost entirely anecdotal, but there are few if any that fail to cast some new light on the drama under discussion. -- Rowan Williams * New Statesman *Doran reflects with intelligence and grace and wit on himself and those with whom he has worked, and on the ways in which they sought to breathe fresh life into a series of plays that, for the most part, audiences think they know well … You’ll find it an informative-instructive delight. -- Rhodri Lewis * Prospect Magazine *This year marked the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s First Folio, which was met with a deluge of accompanying books. This is the best and most fun. * The Times, Best Poetry and Literature Books of the Year *A revelatory and revolutionary breakdown of the canon in a way that works for both the professional and uninitiated. His (obviously tight) grip on Shakespeare's universe is permeated by reverence and deference, but what seeps through the pages is his pure love for his language and characters … It's a joy to (re)discover Shakespeare's plays through his eyes. -- Cindy Marcolina * Broadway World *Whether you are looking for insights into both major and minor works by the Bard, the story of two theatrical giants or a history of the RSC over the last few decades, My Shakespeare is a must-read and must-buy, since this is the kind of thoughtful, well-written and consistently entertaining book that any lover of serious theatre would be delighted to read or receive as a gift. For any budding director who wants to bring Shakespeare to the stage, it could also act as a highly readable manual, offering morsels of intelligent guidance that only come with a lifetime’s experience. -- Philip Fisher * British Theatre Guide *What runs through this fascinating book is not only [Doran’s] passionate commitment, but his belief that Shakespeare holds up a mirror to all our lives and to the tumultuous times in which we live … The results are constantly illuminating … This is a very good book that reminds us that practitioners often make the best commentators … [A] thought-provoking journey through the First Folio. -- Michael Billington * Country Life *Greg Doran’s My Shakespeare generously offers us all the most intimate understanding of what the works of Shakespeare can give us; life with all its tragic and comic masks. Doran writes for the lover of Shakespeare, but allows those tentative about Shakespeare's genius to understand why his storytelling is miraculously both universal and local. My Shakespeare is a worthy addition to the study of Shakespeare’s plays in performance - and I’ll be damned if it doesn’t make me itch to get on stage again, to exercise my acting muscles in the greatest poetry-gym in the English language. * Paterson Joseph *Greg Doran’s writing, like his productions, comes from an honest, ungimmicky place. He infects the reader with his own curiosity about the world that gave birth to Shakespeare and how and why he still connects with us. He combines an unostentatious erudition with stories of a deeply personal journey from schoolboy visits to the RSC at Stratford to becoming its Artistic Director. I am so glad everyone can now be let in on his revelatory insights and not just those of us who have been lucky enough to be in a rehearsal room with him. * Harriet Walter *Table of ContentsChapter Page Introduction 8 1 Romeo and Juliet: A Prologue 9 2 Titus Andronicus 23 3 Henry VIII, or All is True. 31 4 The Merchant of Venice 39 5 The Winter’s Tale 45 6 Timon of Athens 50 7 Macbeth 55 8 As You Like It 65 9 King John 69 10 Much Ado About Nothing 75 11 The Taming of The Shrew 85 12 All’s Well That Ends Well 92 13 Othello 98 14 Venus & Adonis 110 15 A Midsummer Night’s Dream 116 16 Antony & Cleopatra 127 17 Merry Wives: The Musical 134 18 Coriolanus 139 19 Hamlet 144 20 Love’s Labour’s Lost 153 21 Twelfth Night 161 22 Julius Caesar 168 23 Richard II 176 24 Henry IV Part One 183 25 Henry IV Part Two 200 26 Henry V 203 27 King Lear 209 28 The Tempest 217 29 Troilus and Cressida 225 30 Measure for Measure 231 31 The Comedy of Errors (a lockdown chapter) 235 32 Henry VI Part One 240 33 Henry VI Part Two 249 34 Henry VI Part Three 253 35 Richard III 255 36 Cymbeline: An Epilogue 268

Along with Lenny Bruce and Richard Pryor, Carlin is considered part of the holy trinity of stand-up comedy. He opened the door to what was possible in stand-up beyond simple joke telling. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc k.d. langs Ingenue
Book SynopsisCanadian performer k.d. lang broke new ground in the 1980s by blending the genres of punk and country, dubbed cowpunk, with her band, the Reclines. Despite Grammy-award-winning recordings and frequent North American TV spots, mainstream country radio excluded lang from airplay due to her unconventional gender presentation and perceived sexuality. Not until lang's 1992 pop album Ingénue, the release of the single Constant Craving, and her subsequent coming out in The Advocate did lang earn critical acclaim worldwide. The book addresses lang's rise to fame after switching genres, the successful reinvention of her sound and persona, and how she found herself immersed in the whirlwind of MTV and the lesbian chic aesthetic of 1990s pop culture. As an LGBTQ author, Joanna McNaney Stein discusses her adolescence and sexual development by weaving in short narrative prose pieces with her analysis of lang and Ingénue. Bloomsbury Publishing Plc New Kids on the Block's Hangin' Tough
Book SynopsisHangin’ Tough, the second album by the New Kids on the Block, has sold more than seventeen million copies worldwide since it was released in 1988. But the album and the band have also been dismissed, derided and deemed uncool by the music establishment. Almost thirty years later, the New Kids still perform the songs from Hangin’ Tough.Hundreds of thousands of grown women still flock to their concerts to hear—and go bat-shit crazy for—the songs they first heard when they were teenagers. Is this mere nostalgia or can the science of music help explain the enduring success of Hangin’ Tough? What is it about this album that made it so special? Is the music any good or are there other factors at play too? Journalist and New Kids fan Rebecca Wallwork sets out to analyze the quality of Hangin’ Tough with the help of music cognition experts, critics, producers and music industry pros. This is not a story about crazy fans, boy bands and truckloads of cheesy merchandise; it is an exploration of a watershed album and moment in pop culture history. It is a glimpse into the brain of not just New Kids fans, but into the minds and hearts of anyone who loves music.Trade ReviewMaking the case for the slick-sounding album’s place in music history seems a considerable undertaking. Yet author Wallwork presents more than enough plausible evidence about the band’s place in pop culture through research and interviews with those who worked with the boys during its heyday. She aims to explain why this album still resonates with her and the band’s mostly female audience (now in their 40s), and she tackles her subject on multiple fronts: the science, particularly the psychology, of why music from people’s teen years sticks with them well into adulthood; the genius of the band’s creator, Maurice Starr, who was also responsible for its music; and the personalities, talents, and musical influences of the five band members. In some ways, this book is not so much a band biography or album history as it is a story about fandom. Even elitist rock fans who don’t remember the New Kids fondly will find that Wallwork’s work may crack their hard, cynical shells. * Kirkus Reviews *What makes Wallwork’s book so great is that you can use it to understand how YOU fell in love with ‘that band’ from your teenaged years, and why you can’t let them go, no matter how you think your tastes have changed. Wallwork refused to apologize for her fandom, and instead invited you along to understand why you feel the way you do about your version of New Kids on the Block. * Bearded Gentleman Music *With this book, Wallwork isn't trying to convince readers to like New Kids on the Block. Rather she just wants to understand her own fandom. She wants to make sure she's not looking at it through the lens of nostalgia, something everyone has questioned at least once with something they remember fondly. Hangin' Tough will remind fans why they love NKOTB and will make others think differently about the group. * Examiner *Table of ContentsIntroduction Chapter 1: Do You Remember?
