  • Taylor & Francis Ltd CompetencyBased Education in Aviation

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisWhether a trainee is studying air traffic control, piloting, maintenance engineering, or cabin crew, they must complete a set number of training 'hours' before being licensed or certified. The aviation industry is moving away from an hours-based to a competency-based training system. Within this approach, training is complete when a learner can demonstrate competent performance. Training based on competency is an increasingly popular approach in aviation. It allows for an alternate means of compliance with international regulations - which can result in shorter and more efficient training programs. However there are also challenges with a competency-based approach. The definition of competency-based education can be confusing, training can be reductionist and artificially simplistic, professional interpretation of written competencies can vary between individuals, and this approach can have a high administrative and regulatory burden. Competency-Based Education in Aviation: ExplTrade Review'This examination of competency-based education ranges widely and is a helpful addition to the literature. Much depends on the questions it asks about the nature of competence and how it is acquired and maintained, questions of vital importance to the future development of international civil aviation.' James Dow, Canadian nominee to the ICAO Air Navigation Commission from 2010 to 2014 'This is a well-researched book, and its message is clearly articulated. It addresses one of the most important emerging subjects in contemporary civil aviation in an informative manner. By building upon the history of training in different aviation professions it provides the context upon which issues and solutions for endeavours on competency-based education in aviation can develop. It is "must-read" material for aviation trainers and training organizations.' Captain Daniel E. Maurino, safety consultant Table of ContentsCompetency-Based Education in Aviation

These specifics, though, are useful to students who focus more on the details of implementing such systems. An Introduction to the Mathematics of Planning and Scheduling fills this void in the marketplace by providing a detailed and thorough presentation of the mathematical models and algorithms involved in the planning and scheduling process. It is well suited for instruction to students."Maged M. Dessouky, University of Southern California, Viterbi, USA"Graduate students of production, scheduling, and planning will thank any instructor who relies on this text. The material is well-organized and appropriate for upper division undergraduates or master’s students. Concepts are presented with examples, and proofs are presented primarily in the form of pseudo code that enables students to implement new tools on their own. Combined with knowledge of data structures, this tool kit is quite powerful. Even students for whom programming is a foreign language will quickly grasp the algorithms presented and understand why and how they work."Jim Moore, University of Southern California, Viterbi, USA "This book is an important compilation of a variety of approaches to solving scheduling problems, supporting a variety of applications. • Taylor & Francis Ltd Automobile Automation

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisIncreasing levels of driving automation has changed the role of the driver from active operator to passive monitor. However, Systems Design has been plagued by criticism for failing to acknowledge the new role of the driver within the system network. To understand the driver''s new role within an automated driving system, the theory of Distributed Cognition is adopted. This approach provides a useful framework for the investigation of allocation of function between multiple agents in the driving system. A Systems Design Framework has been developed that outlines how the Distributed Cognition paradigm can be applied to driving using both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies.Trade Review"Automotive automation is changing what it means to drive, revealing new opportunities, but also huge challenges in defining the role of the driver. This book provides the concepts and tools needed to define this role. Banks and Stanton expertly weave well-proven task analysis techniques with new ways of thinking about human-technology relationships. This practical and innovative thinking is just the combination needed to redefine driving to benefit drivers."—Professor John Lee, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA"Vehicle automation is coming over the horizon faster than many of us thought possible. This essential and timely book gets us back on terms with the inevitable human performance implications. Using first-of-a-kind studies, from the simulator, through the test-track, to the open road, it is clear those implications are both profound and exciting. This book illustrates the potential for integrating contemporary systems-based human factors methods with modern day driving-assessment methods, such as vehicle instrumentation and driving simulation, to understand and enhance performance in modern day road-transport systems. The book outlines why a fundamental paradigm shift is needed in the way these systems are designed and operated, and illustrates how a wide range of accepted human-factors approaches can be applied successfully to road transport to revolutionise the countermeasure design procesTable of ContentsPart 1: Introduction to the research approach; Chapter 1 – Systems thinking in transport analysis and design; Chapter 2 – An overview of key human factors approaches and methods ; Chapter 3 – An integrated framework for transport analysis and design ; Part 2: Rail level crossing data collection and analysis; Chapter 4 – Understanding the current system; Chapter 5 – A systems analysis of rail level crossings; Part 3: Design of new rail level crossing environments; Chapter 6 – A participatory approach to designing novel rail level crossings; Chapter 7 – Evaluating initial design concepts using the systems models; Chapter 8 – Design refinement; Part 4: Evaluation of design concepts; Chapter 9 – Experimental evaluation of novel design concepts; Chapter 10 – Evaluation of novel design concepts by all road users; Part 5: Conclusions and future applications; Chapter 11 – Summary and conclusions; Chapter 12 – Future applications and opportunities; Appendix - Guidance for using the key human factors methods and approaches

Book SynopsisThe revised and updated third edition of Simplified TRIZ: New Problem Solving Applications for Technical and Business Professionals, 3rd Edition continues to demystify TRIZ (systematic innovation), the internationally acclaimed problem solving technique. It demonstrates how TRIZ can be used as a stand alone methodology or used to enhance Lean, Six Sigma, and other systems of organizational improvement. Simplified TRIZ 3rd Edition once again strikes the perfect balance between overly complex and overly simplified, making the effective application of TRIZ accessible to a wide audience. In addition to numerous exercises, worksheets, and tables that further illustrate the concepts of this multinational method, this indispensible volume: Presents a new model for problem solving based on four TRIZ tenets â contradictions, resources, ideality, and patterns of evolution â elucidated for better understanding and application Trade Review"I was responsible for a 15+ year Six Sigma deployment with a global industrial manufacturer. During that time we saw projects completed on every aspect of company work. The tools and processes of "standard" Six Sigma were enough when, following the analyze phase of D-M-A-I-C, the improvement needed was self-evident from the data. However, when the solution was not so clear, Six Sigma was relatively silent on facilitating a team to an innovative solution. We had learned that one of the strengths of Six Sigma was the flexibility of the D-M-A-I-C framework to accept new tools in the pursuit of improvement. After reading "Simplified Triz", we called Ellen Domb to see if TRIZ might address our need. Over the course of several sessions and some experimentation, Ellen led us to the incorporation of several TRIZ tools into our Six Sigma training and toolkit. The combination of the structure and discipline of Six Sigma with the creativity and innovation of TRIZ give teams a powerful set of tools and processes to address most of the problems that they will face." -George K. Strodtbeck III, Author of Making Change in Complex Organizations, Vice President, SBTI. "One of the easiest books to read and comprehend, removing the misconception that TRIZ is complicated to understand … …. now you can really cruise in your car without becoming the mechanics." -Richard Ng, Quality System Manager, HP Inc. Singapore, Certified TRIZ Level 2 "The ability to move forward in the midst of chaos is the new competitive advantage. Simplified TRIZ: New Problem Solving Application for Technical and Business Professionals, 3rd Edition provides a structure for problem definition and description of the desired final result that cuts through the chaos. It has added a new dimension to our operational excellence program. Traditionally thought of as an engineering tool we have used it very successfully for bioprocess design and optimization. I will not start a technology development project without using this method." -Greg Crab, Process Automation Expert, Syngenta "The process of brainstorming has been used very effectively in the Air Force to address a broad range of problems. The main benefit of brainstorming is that the quality and diversity of ideas produced by a group is greater than the sum of what individuals can generate on their own. This happens because interactions with one another within a group spur ever greater insights and ideas from each other and produce a solution beyond what’s possible for individuals. As part of my involvement with the Innovative concepts Group (ICG) in the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Space Vehicles Directorate in the late 1990s and currently with the Center for Rapid Innovation (CRI) for all of AFRL, we have used brainstorming extensively. Teams of the best minds in the government and industry are regularly assembled to solve pressing and complicated problems for the Air Force across many disciplines to include unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), airborne global secure communications, nuclear command and control, and nuclear transport, among many others. This approach has been instrumental for achieving some of the most revolutionary and breakthrough capabilities for the Air Force, some of which have been subsequently pursued by the Office of Secretary of Defense (OSD). Mr. David Conley recently introduced TRIZ to AFRL. To compare the TRIZ approach to our standard brainstorming process, we gave Mr. Conley four specific problems, which we had previously evaluated and generated a set of potential solutions. In a week’s time, Mr. Conley leveraged the TRIZ analysis process to decompose each of the problems and generate a lengthy list of possible solutions. Mr. Conley was able to generate nearly identical solution sets to what we had done using four separate teams of a dozen people analyzing, brainstorming, and compiling over several weeks. Consequently, TRIZ produced an approximate twenty times reduction in manpower for problem decomposition, analysis, and solution generation. The only input Mr. Conley required was a clear problem statement, constraints on the solution space, and available resources. That a single person skilled in TRIZ could single-handedly generate such a diverse and insightful set of solutions in such limited time was amazing. A further benefit was that TRIZ provided a very structured decomposition and organization of both the problem and solution spaces to help fully capture all potential solutions versus a seemingly random list of potential solutions generated out of brainstorming sessions. We see tremendous value in leveraging TRIZ to perform problem analysis, decomposition, and solution generation and have since regularly leveraged Mr. Conley’s expertise. By performing TRIZ analysis up front, the technical team can then enhance the usual analysis output by focusing their time analyzing the most attractive solution concepts and devote their time to generating a more comprehensive analysis of the problem, a broader, richer solution space, and a more effective, economical final solution. A fellow AFRL colleague had Mr. Conley perform an analysis of specific elements of satellite design and expressed that TRIZ brings a disciplined analysis methodology that is very thorough and all encompassing. Despite Mr. Conley having no particular background in satellite structures, he was able to apply the TRIZ methodology to generate an impressive set of solution concepts. Further, he achieved this with very little technical input from AFRL and in an impressively few number of hours. The results made it clear the processes utilized are robust and capable of accurately focusing on issues that may be hidden within large and complex systems. The breadth of solutions provided ample flexibility in how the ultimate solution could be implemented with potential solutions ranging from simple to complex. Further, this systematic innovation process can be scaled at several hierarchy levels within a system for the purpose of refining and advancing the most attractive solution concepts. The Simplified TRIZ 3rd edition adds significant improvements to the earlier edition. Chapter 7 has been added to explain how to apply functional analysis to model problem situations and how to apply contradiction analysis (and thus solution generation) to these models. Also, Chapter 10 has been significantly expanded with the application of patterns (trends of system evolution) to developing innovations and includes several new detailed cases studies: 1) the future of washing machine, 2) the future of parcel delivery (3D printing), and 3) the future of smart phones (mobile computing). I highly recommend the TRIZ process and particularly, Mr. David Conley, as a skilled, insightful, and capable TRIZ operator, for analyzing complex problems and generating a diverse set of potential solutions. TRIZ is almost certain to generate a simpler, cheaper, and more effective solution than could be achieved otherwise." -Ret. Major Richard Martin, DR-IV, Air Force Research Laboratory "TRIZ has created such a fundamental shift in my natural way of thinking, I can barely imaging problem solving without it. TRIZ has allowed me to overcome many challenges, and more importantly, has helped me to guide and coach many other problem solvers to also overcome their challenges with innovation. When asked about TRIZ books, I always had to apologize that most books tend to over complicate TRIZ or over simplify TRIZ to the point of neutralizing its effectiveness. Simplified TRIZ 3rd edition effectively bridges this gap presenting an easy to understand, yet effective usage of the TRIZ methodology. I hope you also find it valuable. Just TRIZ it!" -Ido Lapidot, Former Intel Strategic Technologies Planner and Systematic Innovation Leader, Level 3 TRIZ Expert A major emphasis of the lab is to assess the applicability of fundamental research to the technology needs of the Air Force. Often this requires preliminary concept studies to identify requirements and performance metrics prior to launching in-depth assessments and evaluations. While methods for assessing technologies against system requirements exist within the lab, little is available in terms of formal methods for developing initial sets of requirements and performance metrics. In particular, for software related technologies; e.g., architecture, logic, information assurance, code robustness and V&V techniques, we were simply at a loss on how to approach the necessary software related technology assessments. TRIZ offered an industry proven formal method which allow us to move forward with a key software architecture concept study. David provided an excellent overview of the TRIZ methodology and example applications. After several meetings where we refined our inputs and added more detail, David was able to apply his expertise with the TRIZ formal method and provided us an excellent report detailing the results of his analysis. The report not only provided us an evaluation of our initial conceptual software architecture but led to several unexpected novel architectures for us to study in more detail. It was in identifying these unexpected concepts that the real power and value of TRIZ was realized. The TRIZ formal method and David’s expert application of TRIZ proved to be a crucial first step for initiating several in-depth studies for concepts we simply would not have arrived through our intuition and experience alone. If you are looking for a tool to help with identifying innovative and creative designs I highly recommend the TRIZ formal method for the job. -Dr. Frank R. Chavez, DR-III, Senior Research Aerospace Engineer, Air Force Research Laboratory, Space Vehicles Directorate Dave Conley and Ellen Domb brings their wealth of problem solving knowledge and experience into a user friendly style that is readable and engaging. They solve the contradiction many see with TRIZ: Too much depth and it can feel overwhelming. Lack of depth leaves the reader wanting for practical application. Dave and Ellen overcome this contradiction by engaging the reader in practical examples from the beginning gradually moving to the deeper tools that hold the power of TRIZ. They reveal the thinking behind TRIZ concepts which enables a deeper understanding of how to use TRIZ to become an expert problem solver. -Bryan Pollard, Risk Program Manager, Verizon, Level 3 TRIZ Expert "TRIZ has been employed within Syngenta as a method to unbridle creativity while directing structure to the innovation process. TRIZ helps break down domain-centric thinking and introduces us to a broader and more disruptive solution space. However, the process is also systematic and disciplined so invention is not at the mercy of happenstance. The significant benefits realized from the application of TRIZ methodology to Syngenta has been diverse, from optimized pipelines, application of new fields to old problems, and first mover advantage in dynamic markets. TRIZ has codified a large swath of past human invention and integrated it within a methodology that enables solving the task at hand. Simplified TRIZ makes the method accessible and approachable to a broad audience, and the new edition includes new tools and an expanded section on how to introduce TRIZ to your company." -Genichi Kakefuda, Crowdsourcing & Innovation Systems Lead, Syngenta Biotechnology Inc. "Co-authors Rantanen, Conley and Domb have done it again! Simplified TRIZ transforms what is, arguably, the most sophisticated framework for understanding and predicting technological, engineering and innovation change ever developed into a more accessible, actionable sequence of scientific and business methods many more readers will be able to understand and apply. As a consultant to industry and government for the past two-plus decades, I’ve never before seen an equally rigorous, universally relevant scientific method applied by our clients… and I doubt I ever will. Simplified TRIZ takes the techniques out of the realm of rocket science and puts it firmly into the hands of those of us, mere mortals, trying to cope with the seeming chaos of industry and technological change." -Arik R. Johnson, Founder & Chairman, Aurora WDC "I was responsible for a 15+ year Six Sigma deployment with a global industrial manufacturer. Book SynopsisThe Trauma of Racism: Lessons from the Therapeutic Encounter is a pioneering reflection on the psychology of racism and its impact on us all. With the intimacy of personal experience and depth of analytic exposition, the authors expose racism's searing effects on personal, clinical, and community interactions while providing pathways for change. This book asserts that the insights and practice of psychoanalysis, applied behind the couch and in the community, create unique opportunities for change. Essayists address racially derived mental health inequities, including distortions, projections, stereotypes, and historical tropes. The Trauma of Racism invites personal and clinical exploration of how people learn, confront, and re-learn views on race. Narratives of the loss and grief and the burdens of slavery that crisscross the African American community are present. They are complemented by those of the psychological burdens and inspired acts of personal responsTrade Review'The authors offer a fresh, invigorating, and much-needed psychoanalytic treatise on race, race relations, and racism. The contributors that they have gathered represent multiple perspectives, diverse ethnocultural backgrounds, and different nationalities. Together these highly informed and somber voices create a moving chorus of cultural anthropology, psychoanalytic metapsychology, developmental studies, community politics, and, above all, clinical praxis.'Salman Akhtar, professor of Psychiatry, Jefferson Medical College, training and supervising analyst, Psychoanalytic Center of Philadelphia'This remarkable new book is a long-overdue treatment of a subject that has historically been neglected in psychotherapeutic and psychoanalytic discourse. I was enlightened by the brilliant insights from colleagues who provided new ways of understanding racism and the challenges we face. Readers will learn a great deal of practical and clinical information, as well as becoming more familiar with the tragic history of racism.' Glen O. Gabbard, clinical professor of Psychiatry, Baylor College of Medicine'This book is an important and thoughtful guide to one of the more urgent questions facing psychotherapeutic practice today—how to address the individual psychological implications and effects of larger structural biases, inequities, and prejudices. The book deftly connects psychological frameworks with historical and cultural ones. It is a vital resource for clinicians and citizens seeking to understand and address legacies of historical trauma.'Jonathan M. Metzl, director, Center for Medicine, Health, and Society and Frederick B. Rentschler II endowed professor, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine'Psychoanalysis gave us multiple lenses for illuminating complex human behavior through its metapsychology of the individual. In addition, Freud, as a social and cultural theorist, gave us a quintessentially powerful means of coming face to face with the tragic view of how humans are eminently capable of treating one another. These two projects of psychoanalysis converge in The Trauma of Racism: Lessons from the Therapeutic Encounter. Here, Beverly Stoute and Michael Slevin provide a masterfully designed and edited catalogue of accounts of the trauma of distorting the individual ego and endangering generations of collective and degraded human lives in our fractured world ripped by racism and its manifold systemic pathways of racialization. All scholars committed to understanding and transforming the inner world and its external fields of reference to the outside, and in reverse, how psychologically charged external fields of reference activate inner world drama, will benefit immensely from this tome. Now, hopefully, we can teach and study race in earnest without the facile charge of being polemic.'Maurice Apprey, professor of Psychiatry, is a member of the Academy of Distinguished Educators, School of Medicine, and dean of African American Affairs, University of Virginia'This collection by Beverly Stoute and Michael Slevin is required reading for everyone practicing, supervising, or teaching the psychodynamic tradition. The authors provide the deep, subtle clinical thinking and practice wisdom on racism that until now has been lacking. But the reach of the book goes beyond clinical practice. Racism is searing. Its history shapes each of us regardless of racial identity. Its impact on the psyches of everyone in the U.S. is profound and traumatic. Anyone willing to look inward at themselves or outward at our society through the lens of racism could profit from this book. The authors’ authenticity as they share critical reflections gained through work in the therapeutic encounter is a strength of a book that is a joy to read.'Joanne Corbin, associate dean for Academic Affairs, University of Connecticut School of Social Work, former director, Smith College School for Social Work doctoral programTable of ContentsIntroduction Part 1: Historical Perspectives 1. 15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book is about the behaviour of systems. Systems are important, for we interact with them all the time, and many of the actions we take are influenced by a system â for example, the system of performance measures in an organisation influences, often very strongly, how individuals within that organisation behave. Furthermore, sometimes we are involved in the design of systems, as is any manager contributing to the definition of what those performance measures might be. That manager will want to ensure that all the proposed performance measures will drive the ârightâ behaviours rather than (inadvertently) encouraging dysfunctional âgame playingâ, and so anticipating how the performance measurement system will work in practice is a vital part of a wise design process. Some of the systems with which we interact are local, such as your organisationâs performance measurement system. Some systems, however, are distant, but nonetheless very real, such as the healthcare system, thTrade ReviewEssential reading for all involved in formulating and implementing policy and winning hearts and minds - full of wise and practical advice on how to avoid those twin trip-wires of 'perverse incentives' and 'unintended consequences'. -- Jim Mather, Visiting Professor, Heriot-Watt University, Co-founder of the Scottish Leadership Institute and former Scottish Government Minister for Enterprise, Energy and Tourism. It can be difficult to know how to start using systems thinking to tackle the challenges we face in business and society - but not anymore. This book provides an accessible and enjoyable introduction to systems thinking. It uses causal loop diagrams to explain a range of issues and does so in a highly engaging manner. Readers are provided with practical advice and clear insight into how to think about problems in a connected and meaningful way.-- Susan Howick, Professor of Management Science and Vice-Dean (Academic) for Strathclyde Business School This book clearly shows the complexity of the climate challenge we are facing and the systemic approach we need to take to solve it. We need a positive societal tipping point, a mind shift that will bring us from abundance to sufficiency, from wealth to value and from me to us. The right political frameworks, inspiring role models and positive narratives of a net zero future and collaborative participation to create agency are all needed in parallel.-- Nathalie Moral, CEO, Clima NowIn an increasingly complex and volatile world we are constantly advised to think systemically not just in traditional silos. But it has been hard to find a practical guide to systems thinking that isn’t burdened by technicality or computer models. Dennis Sherwood’s new book fills this vital gap by providing an accessible, engaging and practical way to understand and apply powerful systems thinking tools.-- Nick Mabey OBE, Founder Director and Chief Executive of the highly influential think tank, E3G, Third Generation EnvironmentalismThis book is important! It is a precious resource for anyone, people in organizations in particular. Dennis Sherwood, the author, is a foremost thinker of the Systems approach. He delivers Systems Thinking at its very best. Strategic Thinking Illustrated is a booster for the reader´s creativity. It also makes a superb read. The visual approach to mental models fosters understanding. This book is a blueprint for dealing with complexity. It enables readers to mastering challenges and problems more effectively.-- Markus Schwaninger, Professor Emeritus, University of St. Gallen, SwitzerlandI think we will get a renaissance in the use of systems thinking as (digital) ecosystem business models become more and more prevalent. Understanding the opportunities / impacts / value loops / partnerships etc inherent in such models is hot and systems thinking is a great way to explore them. The book offers a very accessible way into what systems thinking is but more importantly how to think about complex, inter related systems; exactly what ecosystem business models are.-- Dai Bedford, Global Transformation Consulting Leader, EYThis book lives up to the promise encapsulated in its title and front cover. Through a wealth of illustrations and fully developed case studies, covering a broad range of fields, it guides the reader towards a deep understanding of the value and role of Systems Thinking and equips the reader with accessible but powerful techniques of great value in managing organisations and addressing societal issues such as responses to climate change.-- Michael Kennedy, Visiting Professor at the University of Bologna and at the Baden-Wuerttemberg Cooperative State University, Stuttgart and Past Co-Chair Education SIG, System Dynamics Society.Table of ContentsForeword. Book SynopsisThis volume focuses on the key trends and major developments in engineering education in India and reflects on the effects and challenges of its expansion on economic growth and development.Analysing several dimensions relating to the status and growth of engineering education, this book: Highlights, in the overall policy environment, the rapid growth of engineering education, imbalances in the growth between different branches of engineering education, changing trends and patterns in their growth, quality of education, gender inequality, and inequality by caste, region and economic status and labour market conditions that influence the demand for engineering education Reflects on the rapid growth of private sector in engineering education and its effects on equitable access, quality and other dimensions of higher education, and on overall development of the economy Investigates the socio-economic characteristics of the students going to private colTrade Review“Engineering as a field of university study in India has grown by leaps and bounds in the past 25 years, most of it in private institutions and of highly varied quality, from the internationally renowned Indian Institute of Technology to low-quality unaided private institutions. It is this huge and varied engineering education system which India depends on to make it a major player in the global economy. Professor Tilak’s book—a detailed study of this complex subject based on extensive empirical data—is an essential reading for understanding whether the system as it now exists will be able to fill this role.” - Martin Carnoy, Vida Jacks Professor of Education and Economics & Lemann Foundation Professor Stanford University “Engineering education is one of the most important aspects of Indian higher education and central for India's future economy. It is also not well understood and significant parts of it are subpar. Dr. Tilak has provided a thoughtful data-driven and policy-relevant analysis.” - Philip G. Altbach, Research Professor and Distinguished Fellow, Center for International Higher Education, Boston College, USA “This is possibly the first study to provide a systematic economic analysis of engineering education in India. Its juxtaposition of the macro-level with the micro-level makes it most valuable for research scholars and policy practitioners in India, while its recognition of the wider international context will interest readers in the outside world.” - Deepak Nayyar, Emeritus Professor of Economics, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and former Vice Chancellor, University of Delhi “A must reading for higher education policy makers in India, focusing on engineering by a prominent scholar in the field.” - George Psacharopoulos, Formerly with London School of Economics and the World Bank “There are few in India who can match the expertise of Professor Jandhyala B G Tilak in the field of research in Higher Education especially the economics aspects of education at all levels. As Vice Chancellor, National University of Educational Planning and Administration (NUEPA), his contributions to the promotion of higher education research are of historic significance. In the emerging decades, India will compete effectively with higher education in U.K. and U.S.A, largely because of valuable services of Prof. Tilak and a few others. This book surveys the literature of world-renowned writers Robert Solow, Fritz Machlup, Theodoe W Schultz and others with his interpretations of their theories applicable to Indian highe.r engineering education. This book is a valuable addition to the study of higher education in India and aboard.” - Vedagiri Shanmugasundaram, Founder Vice Chancellor, Monomaniam Sundaranar University; Former Director, Reserve Bank of India and IDBI; Senior Visiting Member, Linacre College, University of Oxford “Two great sectors are at the heart of higher education’s many practical contributions to society through learning and research – engineering and health. In Economics of Engineering Education, Professor Tilak takes us inside engineering education and illuminates the role it plays in development. Get engineering education right, he shows us, and the nation is on track. The solid data and considered judgments in this book are making a crucial contribution to policy, the profession and the next generation that will build India.” - Simon Marginson, Professor of Higher Education, University of Oxford; Director ESRC/RE Centre for Global Higher Education “ I find this book very useful for evidence- based decisions and informed public policy regarding engineering education. The book illustrates emergence of private education and its impact on equitable access, equity, quality, affordability and related issues currently faced in India. The systematic approach and methodology adopted in the study and credible data may help in framing right policies. Prof. Tilak’s book will be useful to recalibrate the current approach to engineering education and offer policy pointers to regain the glory.” - Bhushan Patwardhan, Chairman, National Assessment and Accreditation Council; Former Vice Chairman, University Grants Commission; Distinguished Professor, Interdisciplinary School of Health Sciences, Savitribai Phule Pune University “Professor J.B.G. Tilak is one of India’s best-known social science scholars and an international authority on the Economics of Higher Education. His most recent book is a timely contribution to academic and policy knowledge of engineering education in India. Engineering, with its many variants, civil, mechanical, electrical, and production is a key profession in any economy. As Tilak shows, engineering education in India has undergone a sea change over the past three decades. The implications of this need to be understood by both private and public institutions and, of course, students. This is the purpose of this excellent study.” - W. John Morgan, Leverhulme Emeritus Fellow, Wales Institute of Social and Economic Research, Data, and Methods (WISERD), Cardiff University “This commendable book presents a critical analysis of some of the major challenges in engineering education using valuable primary and secondary data. These challenges include: overzealous expansion and the resultant supply-demand mismatches which are reflected in high rates of unemployment, inequities in education by gender, caste/religion, and region, poor quality of education as revealed in lower employability of graduates besides, limited public financing and issues relating to affordability. "This rigorous research study systematically analyses some of these critical issues in engineering education in India with a futuristic perspective. I have no doubt that it will attract the attention of academia as well as administrators and policy makers. Given the paucity of systematically conducted research studies in this field, this study undoubtedly makes an invaluable reading on the subject of a great contemporary relevance.” - Narendra Jadhav, Former Vice Chancellor, Savitribai Phule (Pune) University; Former Member, Planning Commission, Former Member of Indian Parliament, Rajya Sabha. “Economics of Engineering Education in India is an insightful new book by Jandhyala B G Tilak describing and analyzing in depth the remarkable growth, issues related to sources of funding, quality, employment of graduates, and policies for public and private engineering education in India. Professor Tilak is a well-known and respected scholar who recognizes the significance of highly skilled human capital in engineering fields to sustained per capita economic growth. This and more universal basic education are desperately needed for broader development in India. As this occurs, this book, which is likely to become the go-to source, can help make the provision of good quality engineering education’s vital role more economically efficient.” - Walter W. McMahon, Professor of Economics, and of Education, University of Illinois “This is an impressive single-authored book on a timely topic painstakingly researched by an eminent scholar, authoritatively articulating ideas in the discourses on the emergence and quest for future direction of higher education for development with deliberate expansion of the STEM fields in which Engineering plays an important role. By engaging theories and ideas about human capital development thorough empirical inquiry based on secondary and primary data, the author strengthens the merit of the book. Furthermore, by using a methodological approach beyond univariate account to engage in multivariate analysis that provides a rich and multidimensional analysis, the book informs the reader of the complexity of the interactions between the explanatory factors in the educational sector and entrenched socially significant determinants such as gender, caste, and region/state, as well as the dynamics of the public and private sectors of higher education and its financing. In addition to researchers and policymakers in the public and private sectors, this book will be an invaluable source to other education stakeholders including students, international agencies, and NGOs in their respective efforts to understand and effectively tackle the development of inclusive human resources.” - N’Dri Assié-Lumumba, Professor, Cornell University; President, World Council of Comparative Education Societies Table of Contents1. Book SynopsisThe Gender of Things is a highly interdisciplinary book that explores the power relationship between gender and the material culture of technoscience, addressing a seemingly straightforward question: How does a thingsuch as a spacesuit, a humanoid robot, or a surgical instrumentbecome a gendered object? These 14 short chapters cover an original selection of things: from cosmeceuticals to early motor scooters, from Scrum boards to border walls, and from robots to the human body and its parts. By historically examining how significance has been attached to specific things and how things were designed and produced, the chapters reveal how the concept of gender has been embedded and finds expression in the material world of science and technology. With insights from science and technology studies (STS), anthropology, the history of ergonomics, museum studies, the history of science, technology, and medicine but also the philosophy and sociology of technology and feminist Trade Review'This is a fascinating book on a completely original topic, the ways in which scientific and technological things, objects, processes, machines, techniques, come to acquire a gender in the context of their patriarchal (and feminist) uses. Things are made and used by us: how they are made and the ways in which they are used - by whom, with what effects – is a central but unexplored question in Science and Technology Studies. This collection brings new political and social perspectives and new questions to our understanding of what technological ‘things’ may become.'- Elizabeth Grosz, Professor of Women's Studies and Literature, Duke University, USA'Certain things, such as ships, have long been gendered but these were thought of as exceptions to the general rule of neutrality: a thing is an "it," not a "she" or a "he." This eye-opening book shows how widespread the gendering of things actually is — and not just the things of everyday life but the things of science.
