Electricity, electromagnetism and magnetism Books
Oxford University Press Quantum Electronics for Atomic Physics and Telecommunication
Book SynopsisQuantum Electronics for Atomic Physics provides a course in quantum electronics for researchers in atomic physics and other related areas such as telecommunications. The book covers the usual topics, such as Gaussian beams, lasers, nonlinear optics and modulation techniques, but also includes a number of areas not usually found in a textbook on quantum electronics. Among the latter are such practical matters as the enhancement of nonlinear processes in a build-up cavity or periodically polled waveguide, impedance matching into a cavity, laser frequency stabilization (including servomechanism theory), astigmatism in ring cavities, and frequency locking a laser to an atomic or molecular line. The second edition includes a new complete chapter on optical waveguide theory, fiber optic components and fiber lasers. Other updates include new coverage of mode locked fiber lasers, comb generation in a micro-resonator, and periodically poled optical waveguides.Trade ReviewReview from previous edition This is a well-written and readable introduction to quantum electronics which treats topics not usually found in traditional texts. Nagourney has put together what could become a standard book in the field. * Ifan Hughes, Durham University *Graduate students and researchers in atomic physics, as well as university lecturers, will find this a useful resource. * Cern Courier *Table of Contents1. Pennsylvania State University Press Electromagnetism and the Metonymic Imagination
Book SynopsisIllustrates how the discovery of electromagnetism in 1820 not only led to technological inventions, such as the dynamo and the telegraph, but also legitimized modes of reasoning that manifested a sharper ability to perceive how metonymic relations could reveal the order of things.Trade Review“A fascinating and convincing argument that treats the notion of magnetism in an original way. It will become indispensable reading for cultural historians who are interested in the connections between science and the broader literary or social culture in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and twentieth centuries.”—David Bell, author of Real Time: Accelerating Narrative from Balzac to Zola“With its uncluttered prose and careful explications of thorny debates and esoteric philosophies, Electromagnetism and the Metonymic Imagination brings precision to a sometimes fuzzy field of interdisciplinary inquiry. Literary scholars will learn much from this book’s cogent analyses, not only about the long history of magnetism, from the sixth-century Aetius of Amida to today’s Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) technology, but also about how that history has been deeply intertwined with—and marked by—literary reconceptions of imaginative thought.”—Andrea Goulet Nineteenth-Century French Studies“Murphy contributes to ongoing studies on the “electric age” by convincingly demonstrating how electromagnetism drove conceptual and enduring changes in literary and scientific practices. Electromagnetic thinking, including the application of metonymic relations, revealed new ways of ordering and investigating the world. His comparative approach synthesizes electromagnetic analogies across discipline, genre, and national specificities.”—Kameron Sanzo The British Society for Literature and Science“By investigating the links between electricity and magnetism, Murphy uncovers forces that bind the natural and human sciences, literature and science, and analysis and creativity.”—Lindsey Grubbs Poe StudiesTable of ContentsAcknowledgmentsIntroduction1. Cambridge University Press Cosmic Magnetic Fields 53 Cambridge Astrophysics
Book SynopsisMagnetic fields are important in the Universe and their effects contain the key to many astrophysical phenomena that are otherwise impossible to understand. This book presents an up-to-date overview of this fast-growing topic and its interconnections to plasma processes, astroparticle physics, high energy astrophysics, and cosmic evolution. The phenomenology and impact of magnetic fields are described in diverse astrophysical contexts within the Universe, from galaxies to galaxy clusters, the filaments and voids of the intergalactic medium, and out to the largest redshifts. The presentation of mathematical formulae is accessible and is designed to add insight into the broad range of topics discussed. Written for graduate students and researchers in physics, astrophysics and related disciplines, this volume will inspire readers to devise new ways of thinking about magnetic fields in space on galaxy scales and beyond.Trade Review'This book presents the current state of measurement and modeling of cosmic magnetic fields. It will be of interest to researchers in the area and individuals with a graduate-level background in physics who may be considering the field … a well-written and well-referenced introduction.' E. Kincanon, Choice'I don't really expect to have to teach a course on cosmic magnetism, but if I did, I would want Kronberg (or anyhow his book) by my side …' Virginia Tremble, The Observatory: A Review of Astronomy'[This book] explores the standard galactic α–ω dynamo theory …, axisymmetric and bisymmetric magnetic field structures of spiral galaxies (including our own), micro-Gauss magnetic fields in the intracluster medium, ancient magnetic fields still retained by fossil radio sources, and other equally thought-provoking topics. … Despite the far-from-easy subject, the discussions are actually not too difficult to follow. Besides those directly involved in the research, other readers with some background in astrophysics will likewise find them stimulating.' B. Ishak, Contemporary PhysicsTable of Contents1. A brief history and background; 2. Methods for probing magnetic fields in astrophysical systems; 3. Mechanisms for magnetic field generation and regeneration; 4. Nearby galactic objects as a microcosm of the effects of astrophysical magnetic fields; 5. Magnetic field configurations in large galaxies; 6. Magnetic field outflow into the IGM from stellar and supernova activity; 7. Extragalactic scale jets and their magnetized lobes; 8. Distribution of magnetic energy into the IGM; 9.
