Book SynopsisThis book fills an educational void in the school leadership literature as it relates to historical, theoretical, intellectual and cultural understandings among those who prepare individuals for leadership in schools and for those who practice leadership in schools attended by significant numbers of African American students. Contributors to this volume are scholars whose research and service in schools have been important in understanding the historical, intellectual and cultural traditions that facilitate and support effective leadership and in schools where African American school leaders, teachers, students, parents, and their communities of support construct effective and productive 'cultures of empowerment and achievement'. It is these cultures that this volume addresses for their efficacy to support, empower, and sustain visible and measurable achievement among African American students.Trade ReviewThis text fills an important void in the literature on how African Americans view effective public school leadership for schools with Black children. 3 in stock

Book SynopsisMany children who have experienced serious trauma are withdrawn and closed off, making it difficult to engage with them in therapy effectively. This book offers a compendium of therapeutic activities that will help children who have endured painful abuse to open up, so that they can learn to express their feelings and therapy can be directed towards their individual needs. From useful techniques for bridging memory gaps to using masks for self-expression, the innovative activities use mindfulness, art and play to help children feel relaxed and responsive. The activities require very little preparation, and use only everyday items that are easy to access and can be used time and time again. Case studies throughout offer a helpful demonstration of how the activities work in practice. This is an ideal resource for use with children in therapeutic, home and school settings. It is appropriate to use with children aged 5-17 who have experienced trauma, physical abuse, sexual abuse, forced migration and severe neglect, as well as those with acute depression, anxiety and behavioural difficulties.Trade ReviewFor helping professionals working with severely traumatized children and adolescents - those who may be victims of physical abuse, sexual abuse, removal from the home or sex trafficking - Dawn D'Amico, LCSW, PhD, offers clinically-validated, clinically-sophisticated exercises (including case examples and implementation instructions) designed to establish rapport, safety and support. The highly ingenious and practical exercises are organized to promote therapeutic growth in three important areas of self-expression, coping and positive thinking, and offer state-of-the-art strategies certain to enable growth, development and a sense of being understood among traumatized clients. -- Jeanne C. Marsh, PhD, MSW, George Herbert Jones Distinguished Service Professor, University of Chicago, School of Social Service AdministrationA must-have for clinicians working with children. Dr. D'Amico has put together a fabulous collection of simple, effective activities with examples. The book is easy to read and should be easy to use! I anticipate using these techniques in practice and sharing the book with fellow practitioners. I am enthusiastic about art and the potential for healing! -- Julia Ostendorf, MD, FAAP, 25 years in general pediatrics practice, clinical instructor PA programAs an attorney who regularly works with children in the capacity of a Guardian ad Litem in both juvenile and family law matters, I found this book exceptionally helpful. Oftentimes, and as Dr. D'Amico points out, children who have been through traumatic life experiences are hesitant to open up and discuss these events - especially with a stranger. These exercises are great "ice breakers" to use in an effort to avoid further traumatizing these children, and instead giving them a safe environment to express their feelings and begin the healing process. I highly recommend this book and plan to use many of these exercises in the near future. -- Breanne M. Bucher, Attorney at Law, Walden & Schuster, S.C., Juvenile Law Section Chair – Waukesha County Bar AssociationTrauma experienced in childhood or adolescence is a major contributor to the development of a substance use disorder, one of the leading public health problems of today. • An African American Dilemma A History of School

Oxford University Press Inc An African American Dilemma A History of School

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisAn African American Dilemma offers the first social history of northern Black debates over school integration versus separation from the 1840s to the present.Since Brown v. Board of Education in 1954 Americans have viewed school integration as a central tenet of the Black civil rights movement. Yet, school integration was not the only--or even always the dominant--civil rights strategy. At times, African Americans also fought for separate, Black controlled schools dedicated to racial uplift and community empowerment. An African American Dilemma offers a social history of these debates within northern Black communities from the 1840s to the present. Drawing on sources including the Black press, school board records, social science studies, the papers of civil rights activists, and court cases, it reveals that northern Black communities, urban and suburban, vacillated between a preference for either school integration or separation during specific eras. Yet, there was never a consensus. It also highlights the chorus of dissent, debate, and counter-narratives that pushed families to consider a fuller range of educational reforms.A sweeping historical analysis that covers the entire history of public education in the North, this work complicates our understanding of school integration by highlighting the diverse perspectives of Black students, parents, teachers, and community leaders all committed to improving public education. It finds that Black school integrationists and separatists have worked together in a dynamic tension that fueled effective strategies for educational reform and the Black civil rights movement, a discussion that continues to be highly charged in present-day schooling choices.Trade ReviewAn essential account of the complex and often troubling history of America's implementation of meaningful school integration strategies.... Particularly impressive is Burkholder's use of a broad...body of evidence....Here we see the activists who confronted established power firsthand. The many parental discussions, confrontations, frustrations, and disappointments give this book a very human face.... Burkholder does not shy from confronting the numerous obstacles still in the way of the ultimate goal of nondiscriminatory quality educational integration reform. The author also addresses new reform models that achieve less-than-perfect integration ends in the face of daunting geographical, social, and economic demographics. * Theodore W. Eversole, Journal of American History *A much-needed comprehensive history of the North that covers the 1840s to the present, adding important periodization to this history.... This study is timely, extensive, and a major contribution to the history of African American education....Zoë Burkholder should be commended for writing such a superb book. An African American Dilemma has strong use of social science and legal research...Painstakingly researched, Burkholder seems to have left few stones unturned....She manages the varying viewpoints of white conservatives, moderates, and liberals as well as Black nationalists, integrationists, moderates, civil rights leaders, and Black power advocates. Burkholder also simplifies a complex history with excellent writing, representative vignettes, and amplified voices of scholars, leaders, teachers, parents, and students. * Dionne Danns, History of Education Quarterly *From the first page...Zoë Burkholder challenges readers' assumptions about segregated Black schools in the United States.... Burkholder offers stories about critics, advocates, successes, and failures of both ideas, encouraging the reader to understand that different contexts and schooling experiences might lead people to different conclusions about what is the best to achieve quality education for Black children....I recommend An African American Dilemma to any reader who wants to nuance their understanding of the history of debates around integration beyond the most common narratives about the civil rights movement in the South. Burkholder writes with a pleasant narrative voice, peppering the chapters with strong imagery and diverse characters that make this book easy to read. * Alyssa Napier, Harvard Educational Review *A very important history of the United States with schools-and ideas about schooling and democracy-at its center.... Burkholder analyzes more than one hundred and eighty years of debates about education with deep understanding and remarkable clarity of expression....I am...deeply impressed by Burkholder's argument that, in the end the fractious debate and determined activism over time have actually resulted in a stronger understanding of what education is, and the factors which facilitate its creation, transmission and retention.... All of us owe a debt not only to Zoë Burkholder for her excellent book, but to the educational activists who stayed with it-and have often succeeded. * Ben Keppel, Journal of Social History *In this sweeping history, Professor Burkholder synthesises many local studies to give a national view of the struggles surrounding integration versus separation among Black educational activists.... Through this exhaustively researched and beautifully written book we learn that public schools have been 'spectacular and important sites of northern civil rights activism'...and that white communities consistently opposed Black educational equality, in the northern as well as the southern United States. Burkholder shows definitively that integration was not the only goal for African American educational activists and concludes that education reform must draw on notions of both integration and separate, Black-controlled schools. In taking this position...this book offers both lessons and caveats for those looking towards the future. * Christine Woyshner, History of Education *With stunning precision, Zoë Burkholder portrays the long struggle of African Americans for equal education in the northern states—from their fight against systemic racial disparities in the 1840s to the racial disparities in public schools in the twenty-first century. Her impressive research reveals equality to mean far more than the Janus-faced goal of integrated schools versus separate, black-controlled schools. Burkholder situates the promise and pitfalls of each within the complex and changing contexts of specific urban school systems, judicial decisions, as well as ideological and policy debates at various critical moments. Her brilliant insights into public education's unfolding, yet still unresolved dilemma for African Americans make this book an especially cogent read for our present time. * Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham, Harvard University *A much needed, sweeping new history of the high-stakes, fiercely fought debates that have informed African American attempts to dismantle unequal and segregated schools. Burkholder brings our understanding of the many, disparate attempts to attain educational justice—across time and in a vast range of locales in the North—into a coherent narrative. Black leaders and parents fought relentlessly against educational injustice and amongst themselves over the question of whether Black controlled 'separate' or desegregated schools were the answer to endemic racism in education. Often they tacked between two, creatively responding to ever shifting political winds. An African American Dilemma keeps the urgent question of education itself and the lived experience of those who were too often denied it at its center. An impressive achievement. * Rachel Devlin, author of A Girl Stands at the Door: The Generation of Young Women who Desegregated America's Schools *In her important new book Zoë Burkholder follows the fierce debates over school segregation that have long cut through northern African-American communities. She takes us into Boston's antebellum battles over its Common Schools, Philadelphia's early twentieth century descent into segregation, New Rochelle's transformation into 'The Little Rock of the North,' the bitter clash between Newark's nascent Black political class and its largely-white teachers' union, and Hartford's extensive efforts to lure white suburbanites back to its schools. An African-American Dilemma is a thorough, thoughtful history of one of the American dilemma's most enduring issues. * Kevin Boyle, author of Arc of Justice: A Saga of Race, Civil Rights and Murder in the Jazz Age *Burkholder has made a riveting contribution to the literature on Black education, civil rights and Jim Crow's geography. It offers a deep assessment of past reform efforts while also contextualising today's ongoing racial landscapes of public education. In doing so, Burkholder challenges triumphalist narratives of the civil rights movement and illustrates the need for interrogating and rethinking markers of the movement's beginning and its end. * Francis V. Gourrier, Jr., English Historical Review *A masterful study of school integration and Civil Rights in the North which breaks new ground on a very challenging topic in American life and culture...Burkholder's work...offer[s] a very unique argument that does something rare in scholarship on school desegregation, which is to discuss it as a dilemma between the presumed ideals of larger societal integration, and the somewhat lesser known ideal of racial separation...One begins to understand by reading this incredibly well-researched study, the true nature of some of the many major barriers to school desegregation in the North...The author carries that forward into the 1990s and early 2000s...offering a model for school districts...still sorely in need of paradigms for successful examples of school integration. * Zebulon Vance Miletsky, History: Reviews of New Books *Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction Chapter One: Caste Abolished: Integration for Freedom, 1840-1900 Chapter Two: The Education that Is Their Due: Separation for Racial Uplift, 1900-1940 Chapter Three: A Powerful Weapon: Integration for Equality, 1940-1965 Chapter Four: Conflict in the Community: Separation for Black Power, 1966-1974 Chapter Five: An Armageddon of Righteousness: Integration for Justice, 1974-present Conclusion Notes Index

Book SynopsisRadically reimagine our ways of being, learning, and doing Education can be transformed if we eradicate our fixation on big data like standardized test scores as the supreme measure of equity and learning. Instead of the focus being on fixing and filling academic gaps, we must envision and rebuild the system from thestudentupwith classrooms, schools and systems built around students' brilliance, cultural wealth, and intellectual potential.Street data reminds us that what is measurable is not the same as what is valuable and that data can be humanizing, liberatory and healing. By breaking down street data fundamentals: what it is, how to gather it, and how it can complement other forms of data to guide a school or district's equity journey,Safir and Dugan offer an actionable framework for school transformation. Written for educators and policymakers, this book Offers fresh ideas and innovative tools to apply immediately Trade Review"Street Data calls upon readers to ′flip the dashboard′ from a focus on big data to a focus on the voices at the margins – those learners and their families who have been most affected by deep-rooted systemic inequities. When we listen closely to these voices with curiosity, courage, and humility, we gain a greater understanding of the meaning and root causes of these inequities, as well as how they can be addressed in ways that transform and heal. Policymakers and educators at every level of the system need this book to forge a path to genuine equity." -- Linda Darling-Hammond"For far too long, education leaders have implemented reform strategies without engaging and centering those most impacted – the students. Shane Safir provides an energizing, anti-racist, actionable framework that centers the voices of the most marginalized students as the experts and co-conspirators that we need to create an education system worthy of their brilliance. Read this, share it, and be a part of ushering in this ′new normal′ of street-level data to unlock racial justice in our schools." -- Taryn Ishida, Youth Organizer and Executive Director"With Street Data, Shane and Jamila have built a conversation more than a framework, wherein students, their communities, teachers, leaders and systems are interconnected parts of a family unit. As a Professor and Psychologist, I found myself drawn to the work’s human and family centered focus. Throughout the work, these are linked to an emphasis on building approaches to the art of teaching grounded in listening, making and holding room for all members of the learning family, and setting goals and evolving approaches that begin with the student as their core. Shane and Jamila are engaging us all in a critically important conversation, where the data we gather and share around learning spaces is shaped and centered on the voices and beings of students. It is family systems centered teaching and learning. It is holistic, and it is necessary." -- Napoleon Wells , Ph.D."Shane Safir and Jamila Dugan have given us a vivid and immensely readable account of what public education could and should be. Rather than quick fixes, the book is rich with real-life examples and immediately actionable equity practices that educators and leaders can use to tackle root causes. The authors have also issued an unspoken but clear challenge to all of us who care about children′s learning and development: ′What if policy decisions were anchored in the lived experiences of students, their families, and their educators?′ Their call to action is clear and urgent: we must reverse-engineer and radically reimagine our resources, policies, and practices to support the broad conditions in which students can authentically thrive, and most particularly students who are the most marginalized by the current system. The vision of educational justice laid out in the book will not be more widely practiced if we simply rely on individual teachers and principals to push forward alone into the headwinds. It must be supported at systems and state levels, so that it becomes the rule and not the exception." -- Sophie Fanelli, President"Street Data issues an urgent, timely provocation to listen to, honor, and be informed by the experiences, wisdom, fears, and aspirations of children and families who have been forced to the margins by our schools and institutions. Rich with stories that affirm our shared humanity and connectedness, Safir and Dugan offer a humanistic approach and practical guidance for embedding love, equity, curiosity, and courage in our efforts to manifest learning spaces where every young person learns, develops, and thrives. "Safir and Dugan call on us to free ourselves from old constructs about data for improvement that are rooted in Whiteness as normative and, instead, model ways to integrate concepts of wholeness, justice, deep culture, personal mastery, and agency into our school transformation efforts. This book is an important contribution to all of us who are working to create a world that works for all of us." -- LaShawn Routé Chatmon, Executive Director"In this absolutely path-breaking book, Shane Safir uses the concept of ′street data′ as an entry point to a fundamentally different paradigm for schooling. Foregrounding listening, understanding, and loving over counting, measuring, and classifying, Street Data illustrates what it would truly mean to develop a humanizing and liberating approach to school transformation. Startlingly fresh in its prose, clear in its convictions, and moving effortlessly between theory and practice, we can only hope Street Data will mark the beginning of a new and different era for American education. A spectacular book!" -- Jal Mehta, Professor of Education"Old systems are crumbling before our eyes as new ones are being built. Street Data offers key insights about how to transform data and explore indigenous knowledge creation for a new world. Shane Safir and Jamila Dugan give us new ways to analyze, diagnosis, and assess everything from student learning to district improvement to policy. This book is a must read for researchers and practitioners searching for a fresh and deeply authentic model for school transformation." -- Shawn Ginwright"Street Data gives us a vibrant picture of what it means to do school when we authentically center our students. Shane and Jamila provide inspiration and clear examples of how we can humanize our classrooms and create a more just education system. Critically for change agents, we also find practical advice for supporting adults across the system as they begin to shift their approach to a new normal that builds with and for students. There is no doubt that we need a new way forward and Street Data is a trusted map for charting a course for maximum impact." -- Shanna PeeplesTable of ContentsForeword Acknowledgments About the Authors Prologue: Data in a Time of Pandemic PART I: WHY STREET DATA, WHY NOW? Book SynopsisHow public history can be a catalyst for stronger relationships between universities and their communitiesTrade Review“Through a collection of compelling scholarship, Bachin and Howard have shown the importance of universities for correcting discrimination and its legacies. Consider this book more than a compendium of inventive campus-community partnerships; it’s an indispensable guide for the future of urban justice.”—N.D.B. Connolly, Herbert Baxter Adams Associate Professor of History at Johns Hopkins University, and author of A World More Concrete: Real Estate and the Remaking of Jim Crow South Florida“Robin Bachin and Amy Howard have compiled a powerful case for publicly engaged scholarship not only as a vitally important modus operandi for urban historians but also for universities writ large. The composite picture they have pieced together from public history case studies drawn from cities across the nation compellingly illustrates how the ‘lens of the past’ provides a foundation for reciprocal engagement between universities and their communities. Engaging Place, Engaging Practices vividly demonstrates the value of urban universities collaborating with local partners to heal historical wounds, co-create knowledge of who we are today, and put our universities and communities jointly on a path to racial equity and justice.”—Nancy Cantor, Chancellor and Distinguished Professor at Rutgers University–Newark, and coeditor of Our Compelling Interests: The Value of Diversity for Democracy and a Prosperous Society"A real strength of this collection is the range of university–community partnerships highlighted.... Engaging Place, Engaging Practices is an excellent addition to the literature on public history, public humanities, and university–community partnerships. The range of projects included in the book make it an appealing read for anyone already doing university–community partnership work and for those who want to join in it.... [T]he volume is convincing in its call for historians and the broader university to truly partner with surrounding communities in order to collectively analyze and engage in pressing social, economic, and environmental problems." —Teachers College Record"In nearly all the chapters, the authors demonstrate that sustained collaboration and committed university leadership are essential to ensure that the potential and power of urban universities can be leveraged to promote positive change.... [C]hapters demonstrate how instructors and individual courses can make a difference in the lives of students and residents. As such, the collection provides examples at a variety of scales—from the block, neighborhood, city, and regional school-of '...colleges and universities [striving] to matter'. In doing so, the editors make the case that the engaged university can and should do more to shape 'inclusive, equitable, and sustainable' communities—and that universities need to assume a heightened leadership role in a post-COVID-19 world."—Economic Development Quarterly

  • Deep Learning: Engage the World Change the World

SAGE Publications Inc Deep Learning: Engage the World Change the World

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisEngage the World Change the World Deep Learning has claimed the attention of educators and policymakers around the world. This book not only defines what deep learning is, but takes up the question of how to mobilize complex, whole-system change and transform learning for all students. Deep Learning is a global partnership that works to: transform the role of teachers to that of activators who design experiences that build global competencies using real-life problem solving; and supports schools, districts, and systems to shift practice and how to measure learning in authentic ways. This comprehensive strategy incorporates practical tools and processes to engage students, educators, and families in new partnerships and drive deep learning. Inside you’ll find: The Deep Learning Framework Vignettes and case studies from K-12 classrooms in 1,200 schools in seven countries Guidance for reaching disadvantaged and differently abled students Sample protocols and rubrics for assessment Videos demonstrating deep learning design and innovative leadership in practice Through learning partnerships, learning environments, new pedagogical practices, and leveraged digital skills, deep learning reaches students as never before — preparing them to be active, engaged participants in their future. Trade ReviewThis book elevates deep learning from an instructional tool to a systemic approach designed to create powerful synergies to enhance professional, social, and cultural capital. It is built on the deep belief that all students can learn if school systems shift from sorting talent, where only a minority of winners cross the finishing line, to developing the talent of diverse learners. Deep Learning’s power lies in providing practical advice to help school systems evolve, for rules to become guidelines, and ultimately, for good practice to become culture. -- Andreas Schleicher, Special Advisor on Education Policy to OECD’s Secretary-General, and Director of PISAWe live in a world where creativity is our new capital. Michael Fullan, Joanne Quinn, and Joanne McEachen’s book takes us deeply into this world. Read, launch, and learn! -- Daan Roosegarde, Dutch Designer, Architect, and InnovatorDrawing upon decades of hard-fought education experience and with an eye toward our precarious future, Michael Fullan, one of the world’s most respected education experts, along with co-authors Joanne Quinn and Joanne McEachen, has written a comprehensive and practical guide on school transformation. Intended for both policy makers and practitioners, the book toggles between theory and practice to deconstruct the "how" of education system change. It is a must read for anyone who is serious about preparing our children for the complex, interdependent world they will inherit. -- Barbara Chow, Former Education DirectorMichael Fullan, Joanne Quinn, and Joanne McEachen offer a powerful set of ideas to enable deeper learning on a large scale. Deep learning develops examples at every level of the system—from the individual student and teacher, to the classroom, school, and state—suggesting how learning may be radically redesigned in ways that could change schooling as we know it. -- Linda Darling-Hammond, President, Learning Policy Institute, and Charles E. Ducommun Professor Emeritus, Stanford UniversityThere are many "deeper teachers," some "deeper schools," but very few "deeper systems." For that reason, we are very lucky that Michael Fullan, Joanne Quinn, and Joanne McEachen have channeled their prodigious talents for identifying the right levers for systems change to deeper learning. Drawing on their work with 1,200 schools in seven countries, they describe concretely what powerful learning looks like for both students and adults, and how system leaders can support the creation of challenging, engaging, and empowering learning for all students. Every system leader who wants to transform their system from an industrial era bureaucracy to a modern learning organization should read this book! -- Jal Mehta, Associate ProfessorThis book takes us on an exciting journey exploring why and how to deepen learning, and in so doing enables the teaching profession to rediscover the joy of teaching, and immerses students in the endless universe of learning. -- Lynn Davie, Director, Learning and Teaching Branch, Secondary Reform, Transitions and Priority Cohorts DivisionThis book is a call for action. Michael Fullan, Joanne Quinn, and Joanne McEachen take us on a journey of change based on deep conceptual knowledge and vast experience of practice. Drawing on work from seven countries around the world, Deep Learning shows the humanistic and international spirit of the DL movement. -- Miguel Brechner, PresidentOnce again, Michael Fullan and his colleagues, Joanne Quinn and Joanne McEachen, have produced a groundbreaking text that explores how to make more profound learning experiences available to a broad range of students. For educators interested in furthering equity and tapping into the intrinsic curiosity of students, this book will be an invaluable resource. -- Pedro A. Noguera, PhD, Distinguished Professor of EducationDeep Learning will become your mantra for giving your students a sense of purpose and connectedness to the world. More than a reviewer I witnessed deep learning in action at the authors’ recent international gathering. The teachers were on fire. Their commitment to teaching had been re-ignited by the focus on engaging students who no longer saw school as relevant to their lives. Students demonstrated a strong sense of identity and creativity, mastery, and engagement. This book shows us how successful our students can be! -- Alan November, Senior PartnerDeep Learning is a book that pulls the cover away from the game of schooling and highlights the need for systemwide changes to ensure that every student becomes empowered and passionate as part of their own learning process. Deep Learning brings together the work of practitioners from around the world, as they share concrete examples of revitalized classrooms, schools, and entire districts. Ultimately the book shows how the transformation of learning in schools and districts can result in both excellence and equity for all students in today’s global and digital world. -- Tom D’Amico, Associate Director of EducationDeep Learning: Engage the World Change the World addresses the missing learning momentum we need so that students, educators, and parents carry on learning beyond school. With this deep learning mindset, as new truths and contexts emerge and new competencies are required, we will all be equipped to master them. -- Patrick Miller, Ontario School PrincipalDeep Learning: Engage the World Change the World provides insight into the potential when we keep the student experience at the center of our thinking. Book SynopsisThis easy-to-use guide explains how to recruit, nourish, and fortify writers of color through innovative reading, writing, workshop, critique, and assessment strategies. A captivating mix of memoir and progressive teaching strategies, The Anti-Racist Writing Workshop: How to Decolonize the Creative Classroom demonstrates how to be culturally attuned, twenty-first century educators. The Anti-Racist Writing Workshop is a call to create healthy, sustainable, and empowering classroom communities. Award-winning educator Felicia Rose Chavez exposes the invisible politics of power and privilege that have silenced writers of color for far too long. It’s more urgent than ever that we consciously work against traditions of dominance in the classroom, but what specific actions can we take to achieve authentically inclusive communities? Together, we will address how to: · Deconstruct our biases to achieve a cultural shift in perspective. · Design a democratic teaching model to create safe spaces for creative concentration. · Recruit, nourish, and fortify students of color to best empower them to exercise voice. · Embolden our students to self-advocate as responsible citizens in a globalized community. Finally, a teaching model that protects and platforms students of color, because every writer deserves access to a public voice. For anyone looking to liberate their thinking from “the way it’s always been done,” The Anti-Racist Writing Workshop is a clear, compelling guidebook on a necessary step forward.Trade Review“With personal anecdotes and memories, with brilliant readings of spaces, classrooms, and texts, Felicia Rose Chavez communicates so much of what is truly at stake in the classroom: our voices, our histories, and our capacities to live ethically, curiously, and in true and deep connection with ourselves and others. This book is a gorgeous dismantling just as it is an urgent offering up of strategies and questions. My heart is so alive reading this.”—Aracelis Girmay, author of The Black Maria“‘How does one write but not necessarily learn voice?’ This is one of the most halting and necessary questions Felicia Rose Chavez poses in The Anti-Racist Writing Workshop. What Chavez presents from her experience as workshop participant, artist, activist, and professor is vital and generous.” —Jennifer Baker, editor of Everyday People“There is power in the words we write. Understanding how we can use those words to build community, challenge racism, and decolonize classrooms is the work of anti-racist educators. Chavez lays out powerful and inclusive ways to model a writing workshop structure that would make June Jordan proud.” —Dr. Bettina L. Love, author of We Want to Do More Than Survive“‘Dismantle’ has become a trendy word in our current historical moment. We use it, but don't really know how to dismantle. If we are truly going to learn, write, and read in an equitable, supportive, creative, humanity-driven environment that seeks to replace white-centered, patriarchal teaching techniques, this book is required reading. It's bound to be an instant classic.” —Willie Perdomo, author of The Crazy Bunch“Felicia Chavez's The Anti-Racist Writing Workshop is a generational intervention. Chavez is expanding expectations of How-To books while giving radical generative portals of entry into workshop reconstruction. Every writing teacher on Earth needs this book."—Kiese Laymon, author of Heavy"I just read The Anti-Racist Writing Workshop; so many great insights into the whiteness of the discussion of craft and the creative writing classroom. Book SynopsisIndia will soon be the world’s most populated country and its political development will shape the world of the 21st century. Yet Hindu nationalism – at the helm of contemporary Indian politics – is not well understood outside of India, and its links to the global neoliberal trajectory have not been explored. Covering 30 years of Indian politics, this book shows for the first time the importance of education in propagating the acceptance of Hindu nationalism within a neolberal system, including the reframing of the concept of Indian citizenship. The first five years of Modi rule failed to bring about the development that had been promised and have seen India’s rapid change from a largely inclusive society to one where religious minorities are denied their basic rights.Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. Book SynopsisMake the most of every instructional minute with engaging literacy activities Time—or lack thereof—may be the most precious commodity in the classroom. From covering all the necessary curriculum and imparting life skills to attending meetings and answering emails, educators are faced with real challenges when there never seems to be enough time to do it all. Although teachers don’t have the power to create more minutes in the school day, they do have the power to be effective and efficient with the time given. Molly Ness asks teachers first to examine their use of time in the classroom in order to make more space for literacy. She then introduces 40 innovative activities designed to replace seatwork. These literacy-rich alternatives for classroom transitions are presented alongside Research on instructional time in K–5 classrooms Strategies for how to maximize every minute of instruction Suggestions for improving efficiency to expand independent reading and writing time Reflective practices to help teachers examine how they use the time they have The instructional day is ripe for redesign with a thoughtful and authentic time audit. Every Minute Matters guides educators through that process by outlining literacy-rich activities to optimize transitional times and minimize lost instructional minutes.Trade Review"‘Bell-to-bell teaching’ can be full of variety and delight, and Molly Ness offers teachers of all grade levels a huge assist here with her trove of concrete, wide-ranging activities to enhance and lighten the hard work of any class. My favorites are the Reading Graffiti and Sticky Sort, and her conversational style leaves even a seasoned teacher reminded of old favorites like ‘Hink Pinks’ and recommitted to use every moment we have with our young ones. I will be recommending this book widely." -- Gretchen Bernabei"Have you been looking for sensible ways to enrich and energize your transition times? Stop searching and simply turn these pages! In Every Minute Matters, Molly Ness has carefully curated a menu of literacy-linked ideas that will engage learners and maximize instructional time. Once you start using Ness’s ideas, your students will surely be asking for more." -- Maria Walther"Molly Ness is a fierce advocate for literacy, dedicated to amplifying and improving the learning lives of children everywhere. In Every Minute Matters, Ness continues this vital mission. I greatly appreciate that this smart, practical resource is centered on a common challenge: it often feels like there’s never enough time. The included explanation of ‘time audits’ helps readers prepare to rethink current practices and uncover hidden minutes. Ness then provides forty practical learning routines to make each ‘found’ minute matter. Perhaps what I most appreciate is the joy and playfulness inherent in each research-supported suggestion! The flexible instructional practices detailed throughout the book are a powerful antidote to worksheets and workbooks. Additionally, in the Minute Mentor feature, Ness points readers in the direction of where they can find more, read more, learn more, and do more. I am confident this multifaceted resource will be well-loved by hardworking educators as they rethink and reimagine the infinite opportunities for meaningful, integrated literacy learning that could be tucked into every day." -- Pamela Koutrakos"Molly Ness has written a book that belongs in every teacher’s hands. Through both cited and her own research, she reminds us of the importance of instructional minutes. Maybe even more important, she challenges readers to consider how they spend their time, and she provides authentic, relevant, and fun activities that are so much more than time fillers. Every activity has a specific purpose and explanation, and she has designed them to fit into and enhance the structure of our students’ learning lives. This book is not only valuable and practical for enhancing instruction, it will bring fun and joy into classrooms!" -- Melanie Meehan"Every Minute Matters is loaded with practical activities that teachers can use to insert meaningful literacy instruction into those precious minutes otherwise lost to transitions. But this is so much more than an activity book. It’s a guide to reflecting upon how we use our students’ most precious resource: time." -- Lauren Prosoff"Every Minute Matters is a tremendous resource for educators looking to enhance their literacy curriculum and provide purposeful instruction. Dr. Molly Ness has expertly curated an engaging catalog of games and activities to support the development of a child’s reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Book SynopsisIn Culture, Relevance, and Schooling: Exploring Uncommon Ground, Lisa Scherff, Karen Spector, and the contributing authors conceive of culturally relevant and critically minded pedagogies in terms of opening up new spatial, discursive, and/or embodied learning terrains. Readers will traverse multiple landscapes and look into a variety of spaces where attempts to tear down or build up pedagogical borders based upon socially-just design are underway. In disciplines ranging from elementary science, to high school English, to college kinesiology, the contributors to this volume describe their attempts to remake schooling in ways that bring hope and dignity to their participants.Trade ReviewFrom the foreword and introduction, through each of the essays, this volume reanimates the oft-employed term 'cultural relevance,' bringing it to life through the experiences of children and youth who seek a relevant and meaningful education and teachers who strive, always fallibly and often imperfectly, to offer what their students deserve. Fortunately, there are no recipes for quick-fixes suggested here. Instead, teachers, administrators, and researchers will find rich, complex examples of critical pedagogies in practice that point to relevance as a lived concept that has the potential, in all of its intricacies, to craft school spaces in which students feel connected, valued, and at the center of their own educations. -- Elizabeth Dutro, University of ColoradoScherff and Spector address one of the most important and politically charged questions in our field: What does culturally relevant pedagogy look like in action? Their edited volume, through a set of innovative and illustrative case studies that cut across age-groups and pedagogical contexts, adds to a growing body of empirical research to support the claim that culturally relevant pedagogy matters in twenty-first century learning contexts. These editors masterfully bring together a new generation of scholars who seek to fill in the blanks, bridging theory with practice and illuminating both the challenges and opportunities we face in moving forward with our mission to provide every child in our changing educational landscape with pedagogies of dignity, decency, and hope that develop literacy, voice, health, awareness, affirmation, and the power to change the world. -- Antero Eidman-Aadah, Executive Director, National Writing ProjectScherff and Spector address one of the most important and politically charged questions in our field: What does culturally relevant pedagogy look like in action? Book SynopsisThis easy-to-understand, engaging guide arms teens with healthy thinking habits and coping strategies for staying on top of their mental health. Using tried and tested therapeutic techniques, readers are given the tools to build their own personalised mental health 'workout' to boost their emotional resilience and wellbeing.Informed by the experiences of teens themselves, this friendly guide gives practical tips and strategies on how to overcome everyday stresses and ditch negative thinking 'frenemies' before they develop into more serious issues. Teens will be better equipped to recognise negative thoughts and emotions, monitor their mood and behaviour, and flex their positive thinking muscles in order to combat the mental health blips we all face sometimes.Trade ReviewThis guide clearly and concisely describes all the key thinking errors associated with poor emotional health and wellbeing - which - if not addressed, can contribute to more significant mental health difficulties in later life. Crucially, the key messages, based on science and evidence-based research are delivered in a way that is non-jargonised, non-preachy, and very easy to digest; using language and metaphors that teenagers will relate to. They will have fun, I am sure, trying some of the flex-ercises and think-ercises: 'Standing in someone else's shoes' may be less challenging than 'purposely trying not to win an argument' - but what a great tip - and one I shall be testing out myself! That's the thing, whilst aimed at teenagers, this book would also make a great read for adults too - particularly parents or those working with teenagers. The reference to the digital world in relation to social comparison is an important one; this is not going away anytime soon - our young people MUST better understand this and learn how to manage it: 'Be your own comparison and ditch the unreal ideal!'. Overall, I love how this book de-mystifies emotional and mental health and normalises the unhelpful thoughts that all of us experience from time to time. It has a nice blend of cognitive behavioural techniques, acceptance and commitment therapy and mindfulness - a really engaging and informative read! -- Lynne GreenOne of the most critical life skills we can give young people is an understanding of the power of their thoughts and how they connect to, and influence, emotions, behaviour and overall wellbeing. Paula has produced an expertly crafted book for young people that does just that. Having consulted throughout with her target audience, Paula's book provides clear guidance as to how young people can understand their thought processes and achieve self-awareness, regulation and control. -- Dr Fiona Pienaar, Chief Clinical Officer, Mental Health Innovations and children and young people's mental health advocateTable of ContentsPart One - The Warm Up.
