African American Images The Miseducation of the Negro
Book SynopsisOriginally released in 1933, The Mis-Education of the Negro continues to resonate today, raising questions that readers are still trying to answer. The impact of slavery on the Black psyche is explored and questions are raised about our education system, such as what and who African Americans are educated for, the difference between education and training, and which of these African Americans are receiving. Woodson provides solutions to these challenges, but these require more study, discipline, and an Afrocentric worldview. This new edition contains a biographical profile of the author, a new introduction, and study questions.

SAGE Publications Inc Beyond Crises
Book SynopsisWhat are some lessons learned from the pandemic? We learned that, in times of crises, the humanitarian needs of students, families, and ourselves must be a top priority. We learned that forming effective partnerships with families and communities is essential to the health and well-being of our children. We were offered a blunt reminder that a system designed to serve the interests of a privileged few was destined to fail our historically underserved students, especially our millions of multilingual learners.Above all, we learned that the normal many of us have yearned for wasnevergood enoughthat we must envision a better world, where we build on our multilingual students' unique assets and cultivate their inner brilliance. Only then will we deliver on their promise. It's this better world, a world in which communities, schools, and classrooms work together as a whole-child ecosystem,Beyond Crises:Overcoming Linguistic and Cultural Inequities in Communities, Schools, and Classroomssets out to create. Taking a look from the outside in, Debbie Zacarian, Margarita Calderón, and Margo Gottlieb address three critical arenas:1.Imagining Communitiesdescribes how to design and enact strengths-based family and community partnerships, including the critical importance of identifying, valuing, and acknowledging each member's assets and competencies, and the ways recent crises have amplified their struggles.2.Imagining Schoolstakes an up-close look at policies, structures, and now irrelevant ways of schooling that call for change and how we might reconfigure professional development to ensure every teacher and administrator is dedicated to the well-being and success of our multilingual learners.3.Imagining Classroomsdemonstrates how to optimize learning opportunitiesboth virtual and face-to-faceso our diverse students grow cognitively, linguistically, and social-emotionally, and accentuate their talents in knowing and using multiple languages in linguistically and culturally sustainable environments.Student and family, classroom, school, and local community are not silos unto themselves, Debbie, Margarita, and Margo insist. They are part of a larger whole that is interrelated and interconnected and, even, interdependent on each other. By forming stronger alliances, we can realize the power of truly working, socializing, and flourishing together.Beyond Crisesis the first critical step forward.Trade Review"This timely and unique volume from Zacarian, Calderón, and Gottlieb, three of the most renowned masters in the field of teaching culturally and linguistically diverse students, spotlights the critical need for collaborative relationships between communities, schools, and classrooms to engage in advocacy for equitable educational opportunities for all learners. It guides the reader through a journey of reflection by making connections to one’s own experiences with relationship building as well as identifying action steps to strengthen partnerships. It also invites the reader to imagine ways to be open to change and make things happen! This book is a must read for anyone who works with this special student population." -- Maria Dove"Through witnessing the pandemic’s detrimental effects on English learners, I’m left grasping for a silver lining. I need to know how to make sense of what has happened, to learn from the challenges and heartbreak, and to thoughtfully move forward. Beyond Crises comes at just the right time. Through compelling student stories, anecdotes from fierce advocates, and spot-on reflection questions and tools, the authors guide us to reimagine education for ELs." -- Diane Fenner"Beyond Crises: Overcoming Linguistic and Cultural Inequities in Communities, Schools, and Classrooms is just the resource administrators, instructional leaders, and educators in all walks of life need! This timely book by the powerful trio--Debbie Zacarian, Margarita Calderón, and Margo Gottlieb--is destined to pave the way for imagining and re-imagining our communities, schools, and classrooms in a post-crisis world. Their unapologetic call-for-action is to overturn racial, cultural and linguistic inequities—this book will show you how!" -- Andrea Honigsfeld"What a superb and relevant discussion of how we as educators and servants can take our colleagues, our students and their families to the next level. Debbie, Margarita, and Margo have done a great job combining practical, critical practices, and partnerships with perfect examples of why we as educators do what we do. You’ll want to buy two, one for yourself and one to share." -- Shawn Slakk"By using voices from communities, schools, and classrooms, Beyond Crisis re-envisions how systems can move away from deficit-based paradigms. The practical and new ways of re-imagining presented in this book highlight and inspire a call to action that encourages strengths-based partnerships to acknowledge assets and competencies within systems. Beyond Crisis is a relevant and responsive book that motivates hope and empathy to address polarizing and chaotic times in our nation." -- Ivannia Soto"Beyond Crisis is the humanizing, empowering book we need right now! John Wiley and Sons Ltd The Wiley Handbook of Global Educational Reform
Book SynopsisThe Wiley Handbook of Global Educational Reform examines educational reform from a global perspective. Comprised of approximately 25 original and specially commissioned essays, which together interrogate educational reform from a critical global and transnational perspective, this volume explores a range of topics and themes that fully investigate global convergences in educational reform policies, ideologies, and practices. The Handbook probes the history, ideology, organization, and institutional foundations of global educational reform movements; actors, institutions, and agendas; and local, national, and global education reform trends. It further examines the new managerialism in global educational reform, including the standardization of national systems of educational governance, curriculum, teaching, and learning through the rise of new systems of privatization, accountability, audit, big-data, learning analytics, biometrics, and new technology-driven adaptive learning modelsTable of ContentsNotes on Contributors ix Introduction: Toward a Transformational Agenda for Global Education Reform 1Kenneth J. Random House USA Inc The Shame of the Nation
Book SynopsisSince the early 1980s, when the federal courts began dismantling the landmark ruling in Brown v. Board of Education, segregation of black children has reverted to its highest level since 1968. In many inner-city schools, a stick-and-carrot method of behavioral control traditionally used in prisons is now used with students. Meanwhile, as high-stakes testing takes on pathological and punitive dimensions, liberal education has been increasingly replaced by culturally barren and robotic methods of instruction that would be rejected out of hand by schools that serve the mainstream of society. Filled with the passionate voices of children, principals, and teachers, and some of the most revered leaders in the black community, The Shame of the Nation pays tribute to those undefeated educators who persist against the odds, but directly challenges the chilling practices now being forced upon our urban systems. In their place, Kozol offers a humane, dramatic challenge to our nation to fulfill at last the promise made some 50 years ago to all our youngest citizens.

Johns Hopkins University Press Cultivating InquiryDriven Learners
Book SynopsisHow can colleges develop learners who pursue innovative ideas that enable them to flourish and contribute in a rapidly changing world? Two decades into the twenty-first century, our nation's colleges and universities no longer embrace a clear and convincing definition of the purpose of a college education. Instead, most institutions have fallen prey to a default purpose in which college is essentially workforce preparation for jobs that already exist, while students are viewed as commodities instead of being educated to flourish throughout their lives. But rather than bemoan the diminishing legacy of liberal education, this new edition of Cultivating Inquiry-Driven Learners argues that the time has come to advance a pioneering purpose of college that guides the undergraduate experience from program requirements to teaching and learning. This purpose, Clifton Conrad and Laura Dunek write, is anchored in the premise that the world in which we live is one in which changeenvironmental, cuTable of ContentsPrefacePart I. Taylor & Francis Inc Teachers As Mentors: Models for Promoting
Book SynopsisThe book describes two similar and successful models of youth mentoring used by two acclaimed urban high schools that have consistently achieved exceptional graduation rates. Providing a detailed description of their methods – based upon extensive observation, and interviews with teachers, students, administrators, and parents – this book makes a major contribution to the debate on how to reduce the achievement gap.Using similar teacher-as-youth mentor and youth advising models, these two inner city schools – Fenway High School in Boston, Massachusetts; and the Kedma School in Jerusalem – have broken the cycle of failure for the student populations they serve—children from underrepresented groups living in poverty in troubled neighborhoods with few resources. Students in both schools have excelled academically, rarely dropout, and progress to college in significant numbers (Fenway has 90% graduation rate, with 95% of graduates going on to college. Kedma outperforms comparable urban schools by a factor of four). Both schools have won numerous awards, with Fenway High School gaining Pilot School status in Massachusetts, a recognition the state only awards to a few exemplary schools; and Kedma School being declared one of the 50 most influential educational endeavors in Israel. The success of both schools is directly attributable to their highly developed teacher-as-a-youth mentor programs that embody an ideology and mission that put students at the center of their programs and structures. The models are closely integrated with the curriculum, and support the social, emotional, cultural, and academic needs of students, as well as develop close mentor-student-parent relationships. The model furthermore includes extensive support for the mentors themselves. Apart from the potential of these models to narrow the achievement gap, these two schools have a record of creating a school climate that promotes safety, and reduces the incidence of bullying and violence. At the heart of both programs is creating community—between departments and functions in the school; and between teachers, staff, students, and parents. Everyone in the school system should read this book.Research suggests that caring relationships between students and teachers significantly enhance Social Emotional Learning (SEL) -- defined as the process through which children develop their ability to integrate thinking, feeling, and behaving to achieve important life tasks -- which is recognized as an important factor in children's success in school. However, caring schools are usually the exception, especially at the secondary level where relationships between students and teachers seem to deteriorate significantly. This book provides a schoolwide model for establishing caring secondary schools and enhancing SEL using a teacher-as-a youth mentor model.Trade Review"Teachers not only teach. They are also advocates, coaches, allies, supporters, and as Aram Ayalon reminds us in this thoughtful book, they are mentors as well. With concrete cases and useful suggestions from two cases – one in Boston and the other in Jerusalem – Teachers as Mentors provides inspiring examples of how promoting nurturing teacher-student relationships can help even the most underserved and marginalized students succeed."Sonia Nieto, Professor EmeritaUniversity of Massachusetts, Amherst“We ignore what Ayalon has to say at our peril. This is a book that takes us step-by-step through schools that were carefully designed to make it as easy as possible for teachers and students to learn from each other and from their shared world. Following the spirit of the examples presented here, specifically tailored to individual settings, might transform schools into places not only of achievement in scholastics, but also settings where students and teachers enjoy their work together."Deborah W. Meier, Director of New Ventures at Mission Hill and senior scholarNew York University’s Steinhardt School of Education"Teachers as Mentors is an invaluable resource for schools, especially those serving students who are urban, minority, and at-risk. Culture-building through mentoring capitalizes on relationships between teachers and students within democratic learning environments. Teachers who want to become mentors are given specific suggestions for creating close, nurturing relationships through a range of structure, strategies, and resources. The book is accessible, descriptive, and liberatory—giving hope through grassroots examples that teachers who commit to student-centered discourse and action can create the conditions needed for sustainable mentoring environments."Carol A. Mullen, The University of North Carolina at Greensboro, USA, former editor of Mentoring & Tutoring: Partnership in Learning"Ayalon's book in an important reminder that schools need to do more than teach curriculum and assess students -- they need to care and build relationships. In the current environment of high-stakes testing and accountability, it is easily forgotten that student success, both social and academic, is greatly influenced by student-teacher relationships. Ayalon looks at two schools, Fenway High School in Boston and Kedma School in Jerusalem, that successfully mentor at-risk students. The book is divided into five parts and he provides a summary and synthesis at the end of each part, as well as an appendix with examples of mentoring activities used at each school that may impact practice if implemented. Taylor & Francis Inc Color by Number: Understanding Racism Through
Book SynopsisMany deny that racism remains pervasive in America today. How can we open eyes to the continuing disadvantages that keep many people of color from fulfilling their potential, and having an equal chance to achieve the “American Dream”?By presenting the impact of racism on the most innocent and powerless members of society– children of color – in the form of statistics, this book aims to change attitudes and perceptions. Children have no say about where they are born or what school they attend. They have no control over whether or not they get medical treatment when they fall ill. They can’t avoid exposure if their home is in a community blighted by pollution. The questions this book poses are: What responsibility do we expect children to take for their life circumstances? Do those conditions blight their futures? If they aren’t responsible, who is? Are some in society privileged and complicit in denying people of color the advantages and protections from harm most of us take for granted? Through the cumulative effect of official statistics rather than the more usual reliance on anecdote – by taking a “show me the numbers!” approach – this book will open minds, start conversations, and even prompt readers to take action. While the numbers are official they are often hard to find because they are scattered across so many sources. Art Munin has not only done the research, but shows the reader how to locate data on racial and socio-economic disparities, and develop her or his own case or classroom project.Color by Number takes as its metaphorical point of departure the familiar children’s activity of that name. Art Munin has painstakingly researched and gathered the numbers, and has filled in the spaces to reveal the hidden picture of racism in America from the perspectives of health, the environment, the law, and education. This book is intended as a fact-based, antiracism text for diversity and social justice courses, and as a resource for diversity and social justice educators as they craft their race, racism, and White privilege curricula. Art Munin’s multidisciplinary approach – drawing on scholarly work from medicine, law, sociology, psychology, and education – provides the reader with a comprehensive way to understand the pervasiveness of racism.Trade Review"Munin, (social justice, Loyola U. Chicago) compiles facts and statistics about children to make evidence-based, research-driven arguments that illustrate the chronic and pervasive nature of racism. He draws on research from a variety of disciplines and government agencies (mostly from 2000 on) to present statistics through tables, charts, correlations, percentages, and description of health and health care, the health effects of pollution and other poisons, juvenile justice, primary and secondary education, and barriers to access and success in higher education, ending with discussion of social change."Book News, IncThis book is very approachable, meaning that the information and data in it are easy to understand and reference. I would use this text as a supplemental book to support many of my comments and statements that support or refute information that I read in textbooks or hear from other sources attempting to suppress oppressed voices by using “data” to contradict what the oppressed are experiencing. The clear and understandable tables help those who are not “academics” process how our society has not supported the “have nots”. There is a connection of theory to practice using social justice literature and researchers such as Paulo Freire and Gloria Ladson-Billings. Each chapter has a “next steps for the reader” section which is ingenious. When I teach my students about social justice, oppression, racism, and sexism they leave the class feeling overwhelmed and helpless. The next steps section gives the reader an opportunity to continue reading, studying, and fighting for social justice. There are no excuses for reading the chapter/book and saying “this is bigger than me, I cannot be a change agent”. Dr. Munin has noted the critical issues facing people of color in our society today. His selection of chapter topics is what make this book unique and each area discusses concerns that affect the livelihood of marginalized people in the United States. Each chapter and the issues presented segue into the next critical agenda item. For example, Munin shares the plight of poor health care for people of color and children and then he moves into how a toxic environment in communities that consist of the “have nots” continue to kill them physically and mentally. Overall I really enjoyed reading this book and the data (numbers) provided on people of color providing a staggering look at the overwhelming issues our society have created with racism being central to the reason why it is difficult to move forward. The quote by Frederick Douglas in the final chapter summed up all the data quite succinctly, It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken [women and] men. - Frederick DouglassSimply put, socialized biased behaviors are difficult to transform, however being armed with stories and data may help persuade some that things need to change if we are going to save the next generation of children of color. I hope that everyone is willing to be a change agent after reading this book.Mary Howard-Hamilton, Holmstedt Distinguished Professor, Higher Education Program,Indiana State University"To have a work like this which takes as its central task educating a public awash with innumeracy –and especially when it comes to the application of numbers to difficult and contentious political and social issues – is a literary and ideological Godsend. Although I doubt its contents will matter much to those with a firmly entrenched commitment to racist and reactionary ideologies (they will need their own epiphanies, the likes of which rarely emerge from the mere presentation of facts, no matter how impressively arrayed), to those with open minds and a quest for truth, these contents could make all the difference. For those who haven't given much thought to race matters, this volume could serve as an inoculation against the twisted political siren song of the far-right, providing sufficient knowledge so as to weaken the appeal of those who would manipulate their racial fears, anxieties and insecurities, or try and deny the reality of racial inequality so as to push a colorblind – and therefore, injustice-blind – agenda. And for those already committed to racial equity and justice, the contents herein could be even more important: providing us with the factual information needed to go forth and mobilize others to the cause, not to mention reminding us of just how important is the task which lay ahead. I welcome this addition to the literature already extant on race and racism. It is long overdue."Tim Wise, Author, White Like Me: Reflections on Race from a Privileged Son, and Dear White America: Letter to a New Minority"This is a powerful social justice tool. The book provides the reader with the necessary numbers and information needed to be a more competent and confident advocate for equity and justice in the 21st century."Eddie Moore, Jr., Ph.D., Founder/Program Director, The White Privilege ConferenceTable of ContentsAcknowledgments Foreword 1. University of Iowa Press The Creative Writer's Survival Guide: Advice from
Book SynopsisBeginning with “The Writer’s Wonderland Or: A Warning” and ending with “You’ve Published a Book Now What?” The Creative Writer’s Survival Guide is a must-read for creative-writing students and teachers, conference participants, and aspiring writers of every stamp. Directed primarily at fiction writers but suitable for writers of all genres, John McNally’s guide is a comprehensive, take-no-prisoners blunt, highly idiosyncratic, and delightfully subjective take on the writing life. McNally has earned the right to dispense advice on this subject. He has published three novels, two collections of short fiction, and hundreds of individual stories and essays. He has edited six anthologies and worked with editors at university presses, commercial houses, and small presses. He has earned three degrees, including an MFA from the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, and taught writing to thousands of students at nine different universities. But he has also received far more rejections than acceptances, has endured years of underpaid adjunct work, and is presently hard at work on a novel for which he has no guarantee of publication. In other words, he’s been at the writing game long enough to rack up plenty of the highs and lows that translate into an invaluable guide. McNally wrestles with writing degrees and graduate programs, the nuts and bolts of agents and query letters and critics, book signings and other ways to promote your book, alcohol and other home remedies, and jobs for writers from adjunct to tenure-track. Chapters such as “What Have You Ever Done That’s Worth Writing About?” “Can Writing Be Taught?” “Rejection: Putting It in Perspective,” “Writing as a Competitive Sport,” “Seven Types of MLA Interview Committees,” “Money and the Writer,” and the all-important “Talking about Writing vs. Writing” cover a vast range of writerly topics from learning your craft to making a living at it. McNally acts as the writer’s friendly drill sergeant, relentlessly honest but bracingly cheerful as he issues his curmudgeonly marching orders. Alternately cranky and philosophical, full of to-the-point anecdotes and honest advice instead of wonkish facts and figures, The Creative Writer’s Survival Guide is a snarky, truthful, and immensely helpful map to being a writer in today’s complex world.Trade ReviewI write this blurb in distress because for years I’ve been stealing John McNally’s sharp insights into writing and publishing and passing them off as my own. Now this generous so-and-so is sharing his vast experience as a writer and editor with everyone. Worse yet, this book, despite its instructional value, is irresistibly, un-put-downably readable.” - Timothy Schaffert, author, Devils in the Sugar Shop. “This has got to be the most comprehensive nuts-and-bolts how-to that has ever been written about writing. McNally has answered every one! Every one of the questions that always come up in a Q&A session when the writer’s impulse is to talk about Art and the audience wants to know: how do I get to be you? I look forward to having this book in hand. It’s a fine addition to the ever-growing literature of creative writing, and it covers everything.” - Janet Burroway, author, Imaginative Writing: The Elements of Craft and Bridge of Sand.
