The lanky Texan whom Time magazine dubbed “America’s theologian” for his zinging insights into today’s ethical questions says Christians should stop bemoaning their loss of cultural and political power and instead welcome their status as outsiders and embrace the radical alternative Jesus has had in mind for them all along. With comfort, humor, and straightforward advice, The Impatient Woman''s Guide to Getting Pregnantis the bedside comTrade Review“This book is comforting, accurate, and very funny! I recommend it!" --Christiane Northrup, M.D., ob/gyn physician and author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause“Reducing stress is essential for healthy conception, and this book is sure to help!” --Stephanie McClellan, M.D., coauthor of So Stressed"Psychology professor Twenge (Generation Me) cuts to the chase in this wonderful (and often humorous) guide to getting pregnant—and fast. The author explains that when she was trying to conceive, she read everything she could get her hands on—and found that much of the commonly accepted information was false. She decided to set matters straight and help women get pregnant as quickly and effortlessly as possible. Twenge takes a active and confident approach from the get-go, assuring women that if they use her methods of “fertility awareness,” there’s a good chance of getting pregnant on the first try. She offers three ways to determine the time of ovulation: charting, ovulation predictor kits, and fertility monitors, advising that the “Very Impatient Woman” use all three. Twenge details the vital importance of timing, citing research on the best days—and hours—to procreate as well as to synchronize ovulation with the chances for a boy or girl. This is a fine science, indeed, but Twenge explains her approach with clarity and precision. She debunks the myth that a relaxed attitude affects outcome and shoots down outdated statistics (e.g., oft- cited research about the fertility of women over 35 culled from birth records from France in the 1600s). Women hoping to conceive will swiftly find very helpful information in this manageable, informative, and entertaining guide." -- Publishers Weekly

  • Chelsea Green Publishing Co The Lost Language of Plants: The Ecological

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisThis could be the most important book you will read this year. Around the office at Chelsea Green it is referred to as the "pharmaceutical Silent Spring." Well-known author, teacher, lecturer, and herbalist Stephen Harrod Buhner has produced a book that is certain to generate controversy. It consists of three parts: A critique of technological medicine, and especially the dangers to the environment posed by pharmaceuticals and other synthetic substances that people use in connection with health care and personal body care. A new look at Gaia Theory, including an explanation that plants are the original chemistries of Gaia and those phytochemistries are the fundamental communications network for the Earth's ecosystems. Extensive documentation of how plants communicate their healing qualities to humans and other animals. Western culture has obliterated most people's capacity to perceive these messages, but this book also contains valuable information on how we can restore our faculties of perception. The book will affect readers on rational and emotional planes. It is grounded in both a New Age spiritual sensibility and hard science. While some of the author's claims may strike traditional thinkers as outlandish, Buhner presents his arguments with such authority and documentation that the scientific underpinnings, however unconventional, are completely credible. The overall impact is a powerful, eye-opening expos' of the threat that our allopathic Western medical system, in combination with our unquestioning faith in science and technology, poses to the primary life-support systems of the planet. At a time when we are preoccupied with the terrorist attacks and the possibility of biological warfare, perhaps it is time to listen to the planet. This book is essential reading for anyone concerned about the state of the environment, the state of health care, and our cultural sanity.Table of Contents1. The Taste of Wild Water 2. Atlantic Books What My Bones Know: A Memoir of Healing from

Book Synopsis'A striking memoir...A must-read for anyone healing from complex trauma' Jeanette McCurdy, bestselling author of I'm Glad My Mom DiedEvery cell in my body is filled with the code of generations of trauma, of death, of birth, of migration, of history that I cannot understand. . . . I want to have words for what my bones know. By the age of thirty, Stephanie Foo was successful on paper: she had her dream job as an award-winning radio producer at This American Life and a loving boyfriend. But behind her office door, she was having panic attacks and sobbing at her desk every morning. After years of questioning what was wrong with herself, she was diagnosed with complex PTSD - a condition that occurs when trauma happens continuously, over the course of years. Both of Foo's parents abandoned her when she was a teenager, after years of physical and verbal abuse and neglect. She thought she'd moved on, but her new diagnosis illuminated the way her past continued to threaten her health, relationships, and career. She found limited resources to help her, so Foo set out to heal herself, and to map her experiences onto the scarce literature about C-PTSD. In this deeply personal and thoroughly researched account, Foo interviews scientists and psychologists and tries a variety of innovative therapies. She returns to her hometown in California to investigate the effects of immigrant trauma on the community, and she uncovers family secrets in the country of her birth, Malaysia, to learn how trauma can be inherited through generations. Ultimately, she discovers that you don't move on from trauma - but you can learn to move with it. Powerful, enlightening and hopeful, What My Bones Know is a brave narrative that reckons with the hold of the past over the present, the mind over the body - and examines one woman's ability to reclaim agency from her trauma.Trade ReviewA striking memoir...A must-read for anyone healing from complex trauma -- Jeanette McCurdy, bestselling author of I'M GLAD MY MOM DIEDAn intimate, deeply engrossing story of psychological recovery * The Australian *As Foo sheds necessary light on the little-discussed topic of C-PTSD, she holds out the hope that while 'healing is never final . . . along with the losses are the triumphs' that can positively transform a traumatized life. . . . A sharp, insightful and stirring memoir. * Kirkus Reviews *Foo's writing is shrewdly insightful. In telling her story so compellingly, she joins authors such as Anna Qu and Ly Tran in adding nuance to the 'model minority' myth, if not actively subverting it. . . . Highly recommended. -- Library Journal (starred review)This is a work of immense beauty. * Publishers Weekly *Many trauma survivors struggle to describe the seemingly indescribable sense of carrying something intangibly sharp - something there but not there - inside. But in What My Bones Know, Stephanie Foo details that and more. Her achingly exquisite memoir takes us on a journey through complex trauma, illuminating her path of self-discovery and providing real hope for those who long to heal. -- Lori Gottlieb, New York Times bestselling author of MAYBE YOU SHOULD TALK TO SOMEONEWhat My Bones Know is an absolute triumph. Foo's beautifully written memoir is a balm and a light for anyone afraid that their early traumas have permanently stunted their capacity for connection, love, and purpose. This book is a must-read for anyone hungry for hope. -- Christie Tate, New York Times bestselling author of GROUPStephanie Foo's incredible memoir speaks to so many things at once: the horrors of an abusive childhood, the enduring power of trauma, the messy science of the brain and the lifelong quest for meaning and healing. Funny and tragic, unflinchingly honest and relentlessly hopeful, What My Bones Know is a marvel of a book. -- Ed Yong, New York Times bestselling author of I CONTAIN MULTITUDESFoo's journalistic eye serves her generously through a hard-won examination of trauma and its aftermath. We count calories and exercise regularly, yet still the pounds won't budge. Why?In this highly readable and provocative book, Dr Jason Fung sets out a groundbreaking new theory: that obesity is caused by our hormones, rather than a lack of self-control. • Cancer and the New Biology of Water

Chelsea Green Publishing Co Cancer and the New Biology of Water

    5 in stock

Book SynopsisWhy the War on Cancer Has Failed and What That Means for More Effective Prevention and Treatment A groundbreaking look at the role of water in living organisms that ultimately brings us closer to answering the riddle of the etiology of, and therapy and treatment for, cancer When President Nixon launched the War on Cancer with the signing of the National Cancer Act of 1971 and the allocation of billions of research dollars, it was amidst a flurry of promises that a cure was within reach. The research establishment was trumpeting the discovery of oncogenes, the genes that supposedly cause cancer. As soon as we identified them and treated cancer patients accordingly, cancer would become a thing of the past. Fifty years later it’s clear that the War on Cancer has failed—despite what the cancer industry wants us to believe. New diagnoses have continued to climb; one in three people in the United States can now expect to battle cancer during their lifetime. For the majority of common cancers, the search for oncogenes has not changed the treatment: We’re still treating with the same old triad of removing (surgery), burning out (radiation), or poisoning (chemotherapy). In Cancer and the New Biology of Water, Thomas Cowan, MD, argues that this failure was inevitable because the oncogene theory is incorrect—or at least incomplete—and based on a flawed concept of biology in which DNA controls our cellular function and therefore our health. Instead, Dr. Cowan tells us, the somatic mutations seen in cancer cells are the result of a cellular deterioration that has little to do with oncogenes, DNA, or even the nucleus. The root cause is metabolic dysfunction that deteriorates the structured water that forms the basis of cytoplasmic—and therefore, cellular—health. Despite mainstream medicine’s failure to bring an end to suffering or deliver on its promises, it remains illegal for physicians to prescribe anything other than the “standard of care” for their cancer patients—no matter how dangerous and ineffective that standard may be—and despite the fact that gentler, more effective, and more promising treatments exist. While Dr. Cowan acknowledges that all of these treatments need more research, Cancer and the New Biology of Water is an impassioned plea from a long-time physician that these promising treatments merit our attention and research dollars and that patients have the right to information, options, and medical freedom in matters of their own life and death.Trade ReviewForeword— “In Cancer and the New Biology of Water, Thomas Cowan presents a lengthy list of promising alternatives and complements to the standard treatment. Moreover, he details a radical new theory about how the state of the water in our cells greatly affects overall health. . . . As in his two other important books, Cowan’s writing is compelling and eminently hopeful."“Dr. Cowan provides a provocative overview of the philosophy of medicine in relationship to the issue of cancer. He discusses multiple alternative, nontoxic cancer therapeutic strategies that are especially relevant in light of a failed medical system.”—Dr. Thomas Seyfried, professor, Boston College; author of Cancer as a Metabolic Disease“Cancer has perplexed generations of doctors and continues to puzzle and confound. I believe in clinical experience, however, and Dr. Cowan has plenty of clinical experience to share. As usual, his thinking is unconventional and compelling. This book affirms that the answer to the riddle of cancer is to be found only in nature and natural means of assisting the body in healing itself.”—Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD, author of Gut and Psychology Syndrome“In Cancer and the New Biology of Water, Dr. Cowan dismantles the conventional explanation of how cancers grow with a credible counter-explanation based on the fourth phase of water. This not only gives us a biologically plausible mechanism for the etiology and growth of cancer, but also explains some of the many ‘miracle cures’ that we know exist but which cannot be explained by conventional theory. It only takes one fact to disprove a hypothesis, and the conventional medical explanation of cancer is destroyed by the multiplicity of facts presented by Dr. Cowan in this wonderful book. “Most importantly Dr. Cowan explains what can be done, mostly without physician intervention, to allow the body to heal itself. All who wish to avoid cancer, and those who face stark choices as to how to manage their disease, must read this book and take control of their health. This book has changed my thinking and shaped my medical practice. Buy it, read it, and do it.”—Dr. Sarah Myhill, author of Sustainable Medicine and Diagnosis and Treatment of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Myalgic Encephalitis“An eye-opening book. With insights developed from years of medical practice and original thinking, Dr. Cowan presents evidence for an unsuspected protagonist in the development of cancer: water. He not only argues that the gel-like state of the cell, created by water’s structure, serves as the basis of cellular organization and function, but also that any compromise of that gel-like state can trigger the development of cancer. He connects well with readers, weaving threads of sensitivity and humanity through the fabric of the book. At the same time, he is not shy to criticize the cancer establishment for its narrow focus on genetics—which has arguably produced few gains over many decades. Highly recommended, not only for those interested in cancer—who isn’t?—but also for anyone interested in logical thinking in science.”—Gerald H. Pollack, PhD, professor, University of Washington; author of The Fourth Phase of Water“As a doctor who wholeheartedly supports a terrain-centric approach to the prevention and treatment of cancer, I found Dr. Cowan’s book refreshing and inspiring. With nearly half the US population expected to have a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, it is crucial to understand why in order to change these statistics. Dr. Cowan has never shied away from questioning conventional wisdom about the health-disease continuum, and this book is no different. In examining why the standard of care often falls far short of a positive outcome for those with cancer, Dr. Cowan dives into the disease’s actual metabolic and cytoplasmic origins—as opposed to perceived genetic origins—and explains cancer as the result of the fundamental breakdown of a crucial element within our cells: water. For decades, many of us have been exploring a terrain-centric approach to this devastating disease process—one of damaged mitochondria, murky cytoplasm, and a deviation from our true nature. Now, with Cancer and the New Biology of Water, Dr. Cowan makes another important contribution to that growing body of work, bringing vitalism back into modern medicine, examining the role of structured water in cellular health, and inviting us all to consider some truly out of the box thinking to address this growing epidemic.”—Dr. Nasha Winters, coauthor of The Metabolic Approach to Cancer“Dr. Cowan has written a must-read for anyone on their cancer journey. Cancer and the New Biology of Water is filled with research on promising treatment options that help to bridge the gap between conventional and integrative medicine.”—Ivelisse Page, executive director and cofounder, Believe Big

He reminds us that the first incarnation of God is in Creation itself, and he tells us that "God loves things by becoming them." Just for that sentence, and there are so many more, I cannot put this book down. -- Bono, U2 on THE UNIVERSAL CHRISTFr Richard helps us to see and hear Jesus of Nazareth in what he taught, what he did and who he is - the loving, liberating and life-giving expression and presence of God. In so doing he is helping Christianity to reclaim its soul anew. -- Michael Curry, Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church in America on THE UNIVERSAL CHRISTFr Richard challenges us to search beneath the surface of our faith and see what is sacred in everyone and everything. Anyone who strives to put their faith into action will find encouragement and inspiration in the pages of this book. -- Melinda Gates, author of The Moment of Lift on THE UNIVERSAL CHRISTRohr has a wonderful attention to detail and a profound capacity to unfold what it means to see the reality of Christ in Creation and in and through our human struggles. This is a remarkable book . . . Be aware also that [it] is not an entirely comfortable read - Rohr offers those who journey with him in this narrative some radical theological wisdom. -- Canon James Woodward, Principal of Sarum College on THE UNIVERSAL CHRISTA major shift in our culture is needed, and Richard Rohr's unpacking of The Universal Christ is a critical step in the right direction. Remembering our connection to "every thing" has implications for our religious traditions, society - and dare I say it - even our politics. -- Kirsten Powers, CNN political analyst and USA Today columnist on THE UNIVERSAL CHRISTAnyone who has made a confession of faith in Jesus Christ should read this book to grasp more fully the vast and startling implications of this belief. This is Richard Rohr at his best, providing an overall summation of his theological insights that have been life-changing for so many. -- Wesley Granberg-Michaelson, General Secretary emeritus of the Reformed Church in America on THE UNIVERSAL CHRISTHere, Christianity finds its root and its destiny in all things, in all matter, in all creation. and here, we find our connection to universal belonging, to universal trust, and to universal love. • Big Gods

    Princeton University Press Big Gods

Book SynopsisHow did human societies scale up from tight-knit groups of hunter-gatherers to the large, anonymous, cooperative societies of today--even though anonymity is the enemy of cooperation? How did organized religions with "Big Gods"--the great monotheistic and polytheistic faiths--spread to colonize most minds in the world? In Big Gods, Ara Norenzayan mTrade Review"Ranging across quantitative studies, historical cross-cultural examples, theological texts, and the practices of believers, Norenzayan convincingly argues that religions with Big Gods are successful because they generate a sense of being watched and regulated, require extravagant displays of commitment that weed out religious impostors, and encourage solidarity and trust."--Publishers Weekly "I found this book insightful, well-written, and to the point."--Tyler Cowen, Marginal Revolution "The book is a breakthrough, and will undoubtedly influence scientific perspectives on religion and secularism... Without a doubt, Big Gods is a seminal and outstanding book, rocketing the psychological and evolutionary understanding of faith and secularization to new heights and new questions. I strongly recommend it to anyone interested in human evolution, psychology, and the scientific study of religion."--Michael Blume, Evolution: This View of Life "Once in a while, a whole field of research is pushed forward by a seminal work. Ara Norenzayan's Big Gods: How Religion Transformed Cooperation and Conflict is one of those rare books bound to becoming a classic for a generation of colleagues and students."--Michael Blume, SciLogs "This is an impressive work; it demonstrates how and why the Big Gods are still with us, and watching."--Reference & Research Book News "I recommend it to readers interested in the relationships between religions, the non-religious, and nation states. It should be required reading for psychologists and sociologists."--John Harney, Magonia "[T]his book is great value for the money: it provides energy, intriguing ideas and a joyous display of a fine mind, one that swoops and soars and frequently stops to preen, like some brightly coloured bird in an Edenic rainforest."--Donald Harman Akenson, Literary Review of Canada "Norenzayan weaves in one convincing scientific study after another, leaving me (as a study junkie) highlighting about every page... His thesis is fascinating and well worth a read (or two). Norenzayan is not prescribing a way to end religion or to suggest that one form of thinking over another is better, but to get at the underlying factors that bring a society from big gods to secularity. I'm sure any deeply held convictions about the nature of religion and disbelief will be challenged tremendously by Big Gods, and as any analytical thinker would probably say, why shouldn't they?"--Brandon G. Withrow, Discarded Image "Ara Norenzayan's study Big Gods is an interesting study worthy to read."--Kristof K.P. Vanhoutte, Metapsychology "Norenzayan analyzes religion primarily as a mechanism for enforcing social cooperation, a problem for which the evolution of increasingly more powerful gods provides a solution in increasingly large and complex societies... With consistently clear organization and thorough documentation, this book combines explanations for cognitive belief in supernatural entities with social explanations of religion's function, advancing readers' understanding of how the former serves the latter."--Choice "Norenzayan's book provides the best collection and dissemination of research regarding religion as a cultural adaptation for prosociality and cooperation among groups. It sets forth an important agenda for research among psychologists, religious scholars and historians."--James A. Van Slyke, Philosophy, Theology, and the Sciences

Book SynopsisMan is burdened with an ego that is in constant conflict with society and nature, in perpetual flight from loneliness and death. Despite its diverse methods, the single aim of psychotherapy is to free man from his endless self-battle.Alan Watts’s arresting, provocative study shows how Eastern philosophers long ago faced—and solved—the problem of man’s existence in a seemingly hostile universe. Buddhism, Vedanta, and Taoism are examined and related to the theories of Freud, Jung, Sullivan, and May. The inscrutable wisdom of Zen masters is made clear by Alan Watts as he explains how the modern “fiction” of the ego has clouded the sights of psychotherapy and blocked Western man from his true place in nature. The source of modern man’s conflict, according to Watts, is the society that traps the ego in a “doublebind” of contradictory demands. This is the Hindu-Buddhist maya, or social illusion, which one must apprehend before one can be aware of a universal reality. When psychotherapy merely helps the individual to adjust to social norms, it falls short of true liberation; Eastern philosophy seeks man''s natural relation to the cosmos. In this invigorating analysis, Watts maintains that Western science and art are reaching a closer agreement with the Eastern view of nature than is conventional psychotherapy. The powerful insights of Freud and Jung brought psychiatry close to the edge of liberation, but stopped short because of concepts which are deeply rooted in Western culture. The fallacy of the ego, the burden of guilt, Alan Watts suggests, can be finally removed for modern man by unlocking the secrets of Eastern wisdom.
