Jessica Kingsley Publishers Aston(r) Postural Assessment: A New Paradigm for
Book SynopsisThis is a brand new edition of a successful book which was one of the first to encourage movement therapists and bodyworkers to look at the postural causes of movement problems, rather than focusing treatment just on the physical symptoms. The book explains how to measure and assess posture and provides tools for doing so. The author introduces her unique perspective on body mechanics - Aston-Mechanics - a departure from the standard model of body posture, and provides many opportunities to practice observation and analytical skills based on this paradigm.Key featuresThe author is widely recognized as a pioneer in the art and science of kinetics for her discovery of the Aston Paradigm and consequent development of the many forms of movement, bodywork, fitness and ergonomics of Aston Kinetics. She created and developed Aston Kinetics as an educational system of movement and bodywork. Rather than enforcing physical symmetry, Aston Kinetics seeks to recognize the asymmetries that are natural to a person''s body and to achieve the best movement possible. Her acute ability to ''see'' the body in stillness and motion and to train others to see, move and exercise, established her discipline of bodywork and movement training that is known as Aston Kinetics. The book is highly illustrated with over 300 photographs and 150 line drawings. All the illustrations are new for this edition.

Yale University Press Revelation and Authority
Book SynopsisWinner of the 2016 Goldstein-Goren Award for the best book in Jewish Thought At once a study of biblical theology and modern Jewish thought, this volume describes a participatory theory of revelation as it addresses the ways biblical authors and contemporary theologians alike understand the process of revelation and hence the authority of the law. Benjamin Sommer maintains that the Pentateuch's authors intend not only to convey God's will but to express Israel's interpretation of and response to that divine will. Thus Sommer's close readings of biblical texts bolster liberal theologies of modern Judaism, especially those of Abraham Joshua Heschel and Franz Rosenzweig. This bold view of revelation puts a premium on human agency and attests to the grandeur of a God who accomplishes a providential task through the free will of the human subjects under divine authority. Yet, even though the Pentateuch's authors hold diverse views of revelation, all of them regard the binding authority of the law as sacrosanct. Sommer's book demonstrates why a law-observant religious Jew can be open to discoveries about the Bible that seem nontraditional or even antireligious.

Harmony/Rodale Ever Patient Tells a Story Medical Mysteries and
Book SynopsisA riveting exploration of the most difficult and important part of what doctors do, by Yale School of Medicine physician Dr. Lisa Sanders, author of the monthly New York Times Magazine column Diagnosis, the inspiration for the hit Fox TV series House, M.D. The experience of being ill can be like waking up in a foreign country. Life, as you formerly knew it, is on hold while you travel through this other world as unknown as it is unexpected. When I see patients in the hospital or in my office who are suddenly, surprisingly ill, what they really want to know is, ‘What is wrong with me?’ They want a road map that will help them manage their new surroundings. The ability to give this unnerving and unfamiliar place a name, to know it—on some level—restores a measure of control, independent of whether or not that diagnosis comes attached to a cure. Because, even today, a diagnosis is frequently all a good doctor has to offer.

State University Press of New York (SUNY) Gnosis Hermeticism from Antiquity to Modern Time
Book SynopsisTraces the historical development of Western Esotericismreligious traditions which emphasize the importance of inner enlightenment or gnosis. This volume introduces what has sometimes been called the third component of western culture. It traces the historical development of those religious traditions which have rejected a world view based on the primacy of pure rationality or doctrinal faith, emphasizing instead the importance of inner enlightenment or gnosis: a revelatory experience which was typically believed to entail an encounter with one's true self as well as with the ground of being, God. The contributors to this book demonstrate this perspective as fundamental to a variety of interconnected traditions. In Antiquity, one finds the gnostics and hermetics; in the Middle Ages several Christian sects. The medieval Cathars can, to a certain extent, be considered part of the same tradition. Starting with the Italian humanist Renaissance, hermetic philosophy became of central importance to a new religious synthesis that can be referred to as Western Esotericism. The development of this tradition is described from Renaissance hermeticists and practitioners of spiritual alchemy to the emergence of Rosicrucianism and Christian theosophy in the seventeenth century, and from post-enlightenment aspects of Romanticism and occultism to the present-day New Age movement.
