Taylor & Francis Ltd How the Worlds Religions are Responding to
Book SynopsisA growing chorus of voices has suggested that the world's religions may become critical actors as the climate crisis unfolds, particularly in light of international paralysis on the issue. In recent years, many faiths have begun to address climate change and its consequences for human societies, especially the world's poor. This is the first volume to use social science to examine how religions are helping to address one of the most significant and far-reaching challenges of our time. While there is a growing literature in theology and ethics about climate change and religion, little research has been previously published about the ways in which religious institutions, groups and individuals are responding to the problem of climate change. Seventeen research-driven chapters are written by sociologists, anthropologists, geographers and other social scientists. This book explores what effects religions are having, what barriers they are running into or creating, and what thTrade Review"This book opens a research agenda that is long overdue". - W. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Law and Economics of Intellectual Property in
Book SynopsisThis book explores the economic analysis of intellectual property law, with a special emphasis on the Law and Economics of informational goods in light of the past decade's technological revolution. In recent years there has been massive growth in the Law and Economics literature focusing on intellectual property, on both normative and positive levels of analysis. The economic approach to intellectual property is often described as a monolithic, coherent approach that may differ only as it is applied to a particular case. The economic discourse used in legal scholarship and in policy-making encompasses several strands, each reflecting a fundamentally different approach to the economics of informational works, and each grounded in a different ideology or methodological paradigm. This book delineates the various economic approaches taken and analyzes their tenets. It maps the fTable of ContentsPart 1: Intellectual Property, Law and Economics Introduction 1. Taylor & Francis Ltd LeadershipasPractice
Book SynopsisThis book develops a new paradigm in the field of leadership studies, referred to as the leadership-as-practice (L-A-P) movement. Its essence is its conception of leadership as occurring as a practice rather than residing in the traits or behaviours of particular individuals. A practice is a coordinative effort among participants who choose through their own rules to achieve a distinctive outcome. It also tends to encompass routines as well as problem-solving or coping skills, often tacit, that are shared by a community. Accordingly, leadership-as-practice is less about what one person thinks or does and more about what people may accomplish together. It is thus concerned with how leadership emerges and unfolds through day-to-day experience. The social and material contingencies impacting the leadership constellation the people who are effecting leadership at any given time do not reside outside of leadership but are very much embedded within it. To find leadership, then, we must Trade Review"At last, a piercing and comprehensive account of the philosophical and methodological implications of seeing leadership as a collective accomplishment. Some of the most authoritative thinkers have contributed the fruits of their diverse researches, coordinated by Joe Raelin’s excellent editorial scene-setting; the whole adds up to what will surely be a land-mark text in leadership studies." –Jonathan Gosling, Professor Emeritus, University of Exeter"This book collects powerful statements from notable scholars in the emergent Leadership-as-Practice field, and confirms it as a rich alternative to the under-socialised accounts of leadership that prevail so widely. Leadership-as-Practice: Theory and Application will be an essential reference point for researchers in this and related fields." –Richard Whittington, Saïd Business School, University of Oxford"Leadership-as-Practice introduces the reader to a new paradigm that moves our field beyond the traditional views of leaders and how they can be developed. This interesting and well-researched book is authored by leading theorists from around the world and should be required reading for all scholars and students in the field of management. I highly recommend this book!" –Michael Marquardt, George Washington University"Leadership-as-practice is less about what one person thinks or does and more about what people may accomplish together. It is thus concerned with how leadership emerges and unfolds through day-to-day experience... Overall, the book provides a rich alternative to traditional views on leadership and leadership development." –Rick Holden, Liverpool John Moores University, UK"I highly recommend Raelin’s edited Leadership-as-Practice collection because of the range of contributors considering L-A-P from different perspectives. Each of the authors engages the reader through a series of critical questions, which are required to further develop and understand L-A-P more broadly both within and outside the Academy. The book is particularly useful for academics researching and teaching leadership, and for senior students, including Masters and Doctoral candidates researching leadership related topics." - Sarah I. Leberman, Massey University, New Zealand"Overall, ‘Leadership-as-practice’ is a significant contribution to the extant literature on leadership from which a more critically and reflexive form of management education (Clegg & Ross-Smith, 2003; Cuncliffe, 2002; 2004) will undoubtedly benefit. As such, we may not only wish to incorporate it into our students’ reading materials but also consider ways in which MBA, EMBA and other postgraduate students may be able to ‘experience’ the potential of L-A-P in and outside of the classroom: through raising awareness about leadership as an emergent social process; strengthening reflexivity about existing leadership practices; bringing in the learner’s contexts more explicitly; and taking into consideration the emotional and political dynamics of their organisational environments (Denyson & Turnbull, Chapter 13). The book deserves the attention of management educators and may indeed assist in informing much broader classroom discussions around current issues of social divisiveness, ethical decision-making, and corporate social responsibility." - H. Heizmann, University of Technology Sydney"Overall, I found this to be a most interesting book. A persuasive case is made for ‘leadership as practice’ as an emerging paradigm for research, theory and practice. The book has a strong theoretical basis and will appeal to academics concerned with the discursive and practice turn in the social sciences, leadership, action learning and action research. It will also be relevant to practitioners who have an interest in the theoretical underpinnings of action learning and research. Although this is not a ‘how to’ text, it gives many practice examples, illustrative of a range of L-A-P concerns. It is certainly a welcome contribution to ways of making sense of leadership and leadership practice which leave heroic and hierarchical perspectives behind and instead foreground it as more emergent, complex and socially constructed human interaction." - Jean Kellie, Hull University Business School, University of Hull"From a readership perspective, this book provides an interesting addition to the literature, and I would commend colleagues to add it to their collection. For me, the text is best suited to the postgraduate market and will provide an interesting read for many MBA and other postgraduate programmes with significant leadership content. In addition, strong undergraduate students will also be challenged by many of the ideas, and the book will be a useful addition to the reading list for my honours-level students." - Alan Johnston, York Business School, York St. John University, UK"To help close the gap, this book presents a collection of essays on leadership as practice (LAP), a "movement" (as Raelin calls it with an acknowledged wink) that seeks to refocus the camera lens from the foreground of the leader to the previously blurry background of the work context, including the menial, profoundly unsexy, and thankless tasks that the bulk of leaders engage with in the stark reality of Monday morning to Friday afternoon." - Tom Whelan, Director of Corporate Research Training Industry, Inc. Book SynopsisCollege Student Leadership Development introduces the idea that we all play a part in producing leadership and that learning how to participate in the process of leadership is something that all college students need to learn as part of their college academic experience. Rather than approaching leadership from the traditional model emphasizing specific skill sets, this book acquaints students with how to learn leadership using the ReAChS model of leadership development (Reflection, Assessment, Challenge, Support). It then encourages students to directly engage their own experiences to hone their leader identity and understanding of leadership as well as improve their leadership knowledge and skills. Book SynopsisAbout our authors Karl E. Case (1946 to 2016) was a Professor of Economics Emeritus at Wellesley College where he taught for 34 years, serving several tours of duty as Department Chair. He was a Senior Fellow at the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University and a founding partner in the real estate research firm of Fiserv Case Shiller Weiss, which produces the S&P Case-Shiller Index of home prices. He served as a member of the Index Advisory Committee of Standard and Poor's, and on the Academic Advisory Board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. Professor Case received his BA from Miami University in 1968, spent 3 years on active duty in the Army, and received his PhD in Economics from Harvard University in 1976. Professor Case's research was in the areas of real estate, housing, and public finance. He authored or coauthored five books, including Principles of Economics, Economics and Tax Policy, and Property Taxation: The Need for Reform, and published numerous articles in professional journals, focused on real estate markets and prices. Chip, as he was known to his many friends and colleagues, contributed to this textbook throughout its many editions. In his honor and with respect for his substantial contributions to the text and the discipline of economics, his co-authors plan to keep his name on the text for all future editions. Ray C. Fair is Professor of Economics at Yale University. He is a member of the Cowles Foundation at Yale and a Fellow of the Econometric Society. He received a BA in Economics from Fresno State College in 1964 and a PhD in Economics from MIT in 1968. He taught at Princeton University from 1968 to 1974. Professor Fair has taught introductory and intermediate macroeconomics at Yale since 1974. He has also taught graduate courses in macroeconomic theory and macroeconometrics. Professor Fair's research has primarily been in the areas of macroeconomics and econometrics, with particular emphasis on macroeconometric model building. He has also done work in the areas of finance, voting behavior, and aging in sports. His publications include Specification, Estimation, and Analysis of Macroeconometric Models (Harvard Press, 1984); Testing Macroeconometric Models (Harvard Press, 1994); Estimating How the Macroeconomy Works (Harvard Press, 2004), and Predicting Presidential Elections and Other Things (Stanford University Press, 2012). Professor Fair's US and multicountry models are available for use at fairmodel.econ.yale.edu, free of charge. Many teachers have found that having students work with the US model on the internet is a useful complement to an introductory macroeconomics course. Sharon M. Oster is the Frederic Wolfe Professor of Economics and Management and former Dean of the Yale School of Management. Professor Oster joined Case and Fair as a coauthor in the 9th edition of this book. Professor Oster has a BA in Economics from Hofstra University and a PhD in Economics from Harvard University. Professor Oster's research is in the area of industrial organization. She has worked on problems of diffusion of innovation in a number of different industries, on the effect of regulations on business, and on competitive strategy. She has published a number of articles in these areas and is the author of several books, including Modern Competitive Analysis and The Strategic Management of Nonprofits. Prior to joining the School of Management at Yale, Professor Oster taught for a number of years in Yale's Department of Economics. In the department, Professor Oster taught introductory and intermediate microeconomics to undergraduates as well as several graduate courses in industrial organization. Since 1982, Professor Oster has taught primarily in the Management School, where she teaches the core microeconomics class for MBA students and a course in the area of competitive strategy. Palgrave Macmillan Beyond Mobile
Book SynopsisThe advent of constant internet connectivity and mobile communication have transformed the way that many businesses and organisations function. There has been a focus upon the technological aspects and opportunities. This book takes a look into the future at the human aspects of mobile technology in terms of the ways that people will work and communicate in the mobile marketplace.Trade Review'There are certainly many entrepreneurs and marketers who, like us, feel a large degree of uncertainty about the effects of new information technology on our consumption of products, and in turn, how this will affect the operations of companies. It is very cheering that this book on tomorrow's mobile marketplace is now available. Not only does it provide highly informative, extensive descriptions of likely scenarios in the area. It is also a book that has arrived just at the right time.' - Carl Wåreus, Director of Marketing, McDonalds Northern Europe 'The strength of this book lies in the quality of the authors' arguments on the evolution of the mobile marketplace. Various aspects of future approaches likely to be taken by the media sector are analysed in detail, and questions are asked about the ultimate ownership of the customer. The possibility that the customer might not want to be owned at all is overlooked. In spite of this, you would be well advised to spend time and attention on this book.' - Mary Jensen, Industry Standard 'There are no trite predictions in Beyond Mobile, just solid analysis combined with some intriguing scenarios of how the industry may develop in the near future. For a clear and comprehensive analysis of the potential of the mobile market, Beyond Mobile by Lindgren, Jedbratt and Svensson would be hard to beat.' - Professor Ian Turner, Director, Graduate Business Studies, Henley Management College 'One of the key drivers for the Internet in the coming years will be the impact of mobility on the media landscape. Mobility will not only create opportunity as consumers react to new services but it will permanently change the way the media companies view their content and their relationship with users. Beyond Mobile considers the forces at play in both the social and technological arenas and offers an informed perspective of the future in a mobilized world.' - Paul Rossi, Commercial Director, Economist.com 'The future of the mobile marketplace is ever-changing and Beyond Mobile brings that future closer to all of us with many interesting insights and anecdotes.' - Tom Blackett and Richard Ward, Interbrand 'Read Beyond Mobile and learn. This book takes you into the projected depths of our increasing dependency on global mobile networks. Rewind a few years: did you honestly believe Vodafone could one day be bigger than BT? Did you think your kids could spend so many hours texting? Did you know that WAP would get wopped? If you scored less than three out of three, get this book now.' - MarketingTable of ContentsIntroduction PART I: THE CONTEXT What is the Mobile Marketplace really about ? Palgrave MacMillan UK The Recurrent Crisis in Corporate Governance
Book SynopsisSince the mid-1980s two crises have overtaken governance of the American corporation - the loss of competitiveness in the 1980s and the loss of investor trust in financial management in the late 1990s.Trade Review'I warmly congratulate Millstein and MacAvoy on the important contribution which their book makes to the re-design of corporate governance structures and processes worldwide. Their analysis of the deficiencies in our present approach to governance leads logically and inexorably to an admirable set of recommendations which are internationally relevant. Their book is timely, authoritative and practical. It deserves to be widely read and its advice widely followed.' - Sir Adrian Cadbury, Chairman, UK Committee on Corporate Governance and Former Chairman, Cadbury Schweppes 'MacAvoy and Millstein have produced a unique combination of economic history and legal theory to explain the breakdown of corporate governance. When two such experts in governance, who between them cover the map in practice and scholarship, call for such major changes as they do in corporate governance we are clearly at a point where board members will no longer be employees of the CEO. There is much value in this treatise and much value to be created in resolving the flawed governance systems they discuss.' - Michael C. Jensen, Jesse Isidor Straus Professor Emeritus, Harvard Business School and Managing Director of the Organizational Strategy Practice, The Monitor Group 'Millstein and MacAvoy offer a fresh, thought-provoking look at the basic questions in the corporate governance debate and break important if controversial new ground. With a penetrating analysis of the recent failures so glaringly revealed in the spate of corporate scandals and broad new insights into what went wrong, the book charts a new course to avoid such failings in the future. Combining first-rate scholarship with originality, the book sets a new standard for all who are interested in corporate governance.' - John Snow, Former Chairman and CEO, CSX Corporation and Former Co-Chair, the Conference Board Commission on Public Trust and Private Enterprise 'The book is an expert assessment of what went wrong on corporate boards and how to fix them.' - Diana B. Henriques, The New York Times 'The book is short, wise and to the point. It falls squarely into the 'must read' category.' - John Plender, Financial Times 'The Recurrent Crisis in Corporate Governance pushes the edge of mainstream thought in this growing discipline. Authors Paul W. MacAvoy and Ira M. Millstein, giants in the field, have well deserved reputations as practitioners and scholars. This thin volume will quickly guide the course for progressive board members concerned with building solid companies, rather than future Enrons.' - James McRitchie, CorpGov.Net 'Interested in minimizing Directors' liability? This book is must reading.' - Al Driver, Editor, The Metropolitan Corporate Counsel '[MacAvoy and Millstein] ably make the case for a simple and straightforward remedy to American business's worst crisis in memory.' - Roger Lowenstein, The Wall Street Journal <'In their new work Ira Millstein and Paul MacAvoy blend their different backgrounds, plus years of experience serving on and advising corporate boards, to create an important and compelling contribution to the field....The Recurrent Crisis in Corporate Governance should be required reading for everyone involved in corporate affairs, investing, and public policy.' - Howard Sherman, Directors & BoardsTable of ContentsList of Figures and Tables Preface Introduction and Summary; I.M.Millstein & P.W.MacAvoy The Current Crisis; I.M.Millstein & P.W.MacAvoy The Emergence and Development of the Governance Problem; I.M.Millstein & P.W.MacAvoy Conglomeration As An Example of Managerial Self Interest Sources of Accelerated Change The Emergence of the Full Role of the Board of Directors Has the Emergence of "New " Governance, In Terms of Board Diligence And Focus Become Observable?
