    2 in stock

Book SynopsisInformation structure, or the way the information in a sentence is 'divided' into categories such as topic, focus, comment, background, and old versus new information, is one of the most widely debated topics in linguistics. This volume incorporates exciting work on the relationship between syntax and information structure. The contributors are united in rejecting accounts that assume designated syntactic positions associated with specific information-structural interpretations, and aim instead to derive information-structural conditions on word order and other phenomena from the way syntax and syntax-external systems interact. Beyond this shared aim, the authors of the various chapters advocate a number of approaches, based on different types of data (syntactic, semantic, phonological/phonetic) from a range of languages. The book is aimed at specialists in syntax and/or information structure, as well as students and linguists in related fields keen to familiarise themselves with curreTable of Contents1. With the widespread use of interactive language technology on the horizon, this book is an immensely helpful resource for industry and academia alike.' Alexander Koller, University of Potsdam, Germany'Conventional dialog systems in the commercial world invariably produce their linguistic output using simple template-based mechanisms, but the enhanced capabilities of the next wave of intelligent personal assistants and knowledge navigators demand more sophisticated language generation techniques. The broad range of contributions drawn together in this volume provides a ready-made agenda for anyone working in this space, and an excellent head-start on the key issues that need to be considered.' Robert Dale, Chief Technology Officer, Arria NLG'This book provides a timely contribution that brings together two areas, Natural Language Generation and Conversational Interfaces, that don't interact as frequently as one would expect. The breadth of the contributions is remarkable … I wholeheartedly recommend this book not only to practitioners in each of the two areas, but to anybody who is interested in Human Computer Interaction and Natural Language Processing.' Book SynopsisThis book portrays one day in the communicative life of the owner of an auto repair-shop in Texas. He walks, looks, points, shows and explains engines, makes sense by gesture, speaks, manages, makes his life-world, and in the process reproduces social structures and himself as individual. Self-Making Man is the first comprehensive study of a communicating person; it reveals socially shared and personal practices, as well as improvisational actions by which a person inhabits and makes sense of the world with others. After decades of discussion on embodiment, this study is the first to investigate one body in its full range of communicative activities. Grounded in phenomenology and committed to the methodological rigor of context analysis and conversation analysis, Self-Making Man departs radically from contemporary research practice: it shows that, to take embodiment in human interaction seriously, we must conceive of it as individuation and organic, self-sustaining life: as autopoeisisTable of Contents1. Book SynopsisAn original study of the language of mediation, which uses excerpts from real mediation sessions to illustrate how mediation works and how mediators can best help disputants make claims, present evidence and propose solutions. It will interest researchers and students of sociolinguistics, conversation analysis, and the sociology of law.Trade Review'… the book is an excellent blend of rigorous analytic focus with relevance to disputants' and mediators' behaviour and outcomes drawn out clearly. It is highly readable, making Conversational Analysis accessible and relevant to new audiences. It is recommended for anyone who is interested in how mediation works, why it often breaks down, and how it can be done more effectively.' Janet Smithson, Journal of Pragmatics'… a compelling read, especially for linguists, mediation practitioners and others who may be interested in how mediation sessions work in some parts of the United States and beyond. Its strengths lie in the observational, aptly illustrated and longitudinal character of the data corpus and presentation of analyses. … the author has significantly bridged the knowledge gap by showing, using the conversation analysis approach, how conflict is resolved in small claims and divorce mediation sessions in the United States.' • Cambridge University Press Drawn from the Ground

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSand stories from Central Australia are a traditional form of Aboriginal women''s verbal art that incorporates speech, song, sign, gesture and drawing. Small leaves and other objects may be used to represent story characters. This detailed study of Arandic sand stories takes a multimodal approach to the analysis of the stories and shows how the expressive elements used in the stories are orchestrated together. This richly illustrated volume is essential reading for anyone interested in language and communication. It adds to the growing recognition that language encompasses much more than speech alone, and shows how important it is to consider the different semiotic resources a culture brings to its communicative tasks as an integrated whole rather than in isolation.Trade Review'It is a commonplace to note that humans communicate with one another in many different ways. It is rare, however, to encounter analyses of human communication which display analytically the complex nature of how the semiotic ensemble humans make use of may be organised. Drawn from the Ground is an outstanding example of such an analysis. Besides being a very significant contribution to our understanding of an important and interesting cultural practice among central Australian Aborigines, this book is remarkable for the insightful way in which it demonstrates how diverse semiotic modalities function in relation to one another. An extremely valuable piece of work.' Adam Kendon, University of Pennsylvania and University College London'This tour de force draws the study of a language in a totally new direction. Through her close study of Central Australian women's storytelling traditions - and this investigation is steeped in the insights of decades of deep linguistic and cultural immersion - Jennifer Green shows how much we gain in semiotic understanding when we reintegrate the fractured family of our communicative modalities. Speech, chant, gesture but also a particular Central Australian tradition of dynamic drawing on specially-prepared sand surfaces, are all turned to the task of heightening narrative intensity, and the book tackles the challenge of reuniting all these channels analytically, in a way that fully captures the experiential vividness of the storytelling. The publisher, Cambridge University Press, is to be commended on including several strikingly sumptuous colour plates that give some feel for the visual richness of the sand-drawing genre.' Nicholas Evans, Australian National University, CanberraTable of Contents1. Introduction; 2. Sand stories as social and cultural practice; 3. Catching a move as it flies: multimodal data collection; 4. Lines in the sand; 5. Body-anchored and airborne action; 6. Ordering, re-drawing and erasure; 7. Vocal style in sand stories; 8. • Cambridge University Press Quantitative Methods of Data Analysis for the Physical Sciences and Engineering

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book provides thorough and comprehensive coverage of most of the new and important quantitative methods of data analysis for graduate students and practitioners. In recent years, data analysis methods have exploded alongside advanced computing power, and it is critical to understand such methods to get the most out of data, and to extract signal from noise. The book excels in explaining difficult concepts through simple explanations and detailed explanatory illustrations. Most unique is the focus on confidence limits for power spectra and their proper interpretation, something rare or completely missing in other books. Likewise, there is a thorough discussion of how to assess uncertainty via use of Expectancy, and the easy to apply and understand Bootstrap method. The book is written so that descriptions of each method are as self-contained as possible. Many examples are presented to clarify interpretations, as are user tips in highlighted boxes.Trade Review'This text is suitable for undergraduates and graduates, as well as seasoned scientists and engineers seeking to broaden their statistical skills. It will have lasting value as it is comprehensive, containing detailed explanations of a wide range of statistical methods. The book is clearly written by a meticulous scientist who is an expert in the field and an award winning teacher.' James Hays, Columbia University, New York'At last: a guide for getting the most out of your data analysis while avoiding the many pitfalls, hazards and common mistakes. This book is an invaluable and inspired opus on the fundamentals of quantitative data analysis. It is both comprehensive and illuminating, with many a nugget of enlightened wisdom, as well as succinctly summarized 'take-home' points in each and every section. A very accessible must-have guide for exploring data in the most informed way, and a gem of a textbook for students, teachers and practitioners alike.' Sharon Stammerjohn, University of Colorado, Boulder'Coherent book-length treatments are so valuable in the Data Age: the internet is full of algorithms - but described flatly, and in myriad notations and nomenclatures. This long-time teacher's lucid text expresses the spirit and strategy of data analysis, as well as the details. Boxes set off optional advanced derivations, appendices survey matrix algebra and uncertainty analysis, and the chapters aim for standalone readability, making this a valuable reference as well as a flexible textbook (with questions). Spectral estimation is especially well covered.' Brian Mapes, University of Miami'This is a competent development of many data analysis methods … Overall, the book is the outgrowth of teaching the subject for 30 years, which shows in the well-developed, clear narrative descriptions accompanying the theory.' Book SynopsisThis book provides a fresh approach to Singapore English, by focusing on its cultural connotations. The author, a native Singaporean, explores a range of aspects of this rich variety of English - including address forms, social categories, particles and interjections – and links particular words to particular cultural norms.Trade Review'Wong unravels the semantic, pragmatic and structural intricacies of Singlish, treating it not as a variety of English but as a language in its own right. Fresh, strong and original, this is a book for everyone interested in language, culture and meaning.' Cliff Goddard, Griffith University, Queensland'Jock O. Wong's study of English in Singapore is a major contribution to our understanding of not only the semantic structuring of 'Singlish' but moreover to studies of pragmatics and culture. The latter is demonstrated broadly by considerations of data from everyday conversations, e-mail and chat rooms, and analyses of the meanings activated in such usage. The consideration of various linguistic devices such as forms of address, various cultural categories, including tonal qualities, all demonstrate how the use of a rigorous Semantic Metalanguage clarifies specific cultural meanings that are associated with Singlish and everyday language.' • Cambridge University Press Gemination Lenition and Vowel Lengthening

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThe processes of gemination, lenition, and vowel lengthening are central to the study of phonology, as they reveal much about the treatment of quantity in a given language. Using data from older language stages, modern dialects and standard languages, this study examines the interdependence of vowel and consonant quantity in the history of the Germanic branch of Indo-European. Kurt Goblirsch focusses on the various geminations in Old Germanic languages (West Germanic gemination, glide strengthening, and expressive gemination), open syllable lengthening in German, Dutch, Frisian, English, and Scandinavian languages, and the major lenitions in High German, Low German, and Danish, as well as minor lenitions in Bavarian, Franconian, and Frisian dialects. All of these changes are related to the development of the Germanic languages from distinctive segmental length to complementary length to syllable cut. The discussion challenges traditional theoretical assumptions about quantity change in Germanic languages to argue for a new account whereby, gemination, lenition, and vowel lengthening are interrelated.Table of Contents1. Theoretical preliminaries; 2. The road to complementary length: gemination and quantity in Old Germanic; 3. Arriving at the goal: vowel lengthening in Middle Germanic; 4. Book SynopsisDrawing on data from six Romance languages (French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, Catalan and Romanian), this monograph focuses on a widely debated area of phonetics and phonology: intonation, and specifically its relation to metrics, its interface with syntax, and whether it can be attributed to phonetics or phonology, or to both.Trade Review'One of the leading scholars in the field of prosody presents his framework in this comprehensive book. The 'incremental storage concatenation model' challenges the 'autosegmental model' on the basis of large spoken corpora, looking at the Romance languages in particular, while also extending to English and Chinese Mandarin. An independent prosodic structure assembles the prosodic words into a hierarchy and predicts actual spontaneous speech data on the basis of a 'dependency to the right' principle.' Book SynopsisUp to ninety percent of humanity''s traditional languages and cultures are at risk and may disappear this century. While language endangerment has not achieved the publicity surrounding environmental change and biodiversity loss, it is just as serious, disastrously reducing the variety of human knowledge and thought. This book shows why it matters, why and how it happens, and what communities and scholars can do about it. David and Maya Bradley provide a new framework for investigating and documenting linguistic, social and other factors which contribute to languages shifting away from their cultural heritage. Illustrated with practical in-depth case studies and examples from the authors'' own work in Asia and elsewhere, the book encourages communities to maintain or reclaim their traditional languages and cultures.Trade Review'A masterpiece both because of its erudition and its coherent perspective.' David Olson, University of Toronto'The authors address, among other things, endangerment stages and measures; research methods and ethics; linguistic ideology and attitudes that encourage speakers to maintain, or abandon, their language; factors (demographic, political, economic, etc.) that lead to language endangerment; language policy and planning; and strategies and resources for language reclamation.' L. Lindstrom, Choice'The innovative approach of this book, its distinct style and structure as well as the wealth of information and illustration, make it an invaluable resource not only for scholars and students of cognitive and social sciences, but also for those members of the larger public interested in the latest advances in the field.' Book SynopsisContributions from an international team of experts revisit and update the concept of linguistic ecology in order to critically examine current theoretical approaches to language contact. Language is understood as a part of complex socio-historical-cultural systems, and interaction between the different dimensions and levels of these systems is considered to be essential for specific language forms. This book presents a uniform, abstract model of linguistic ecology based on, among other things, two concepts of Edmund Husserl''s philosophy (parts and wholes, and foundation). It considers the individual speaker in the specific communication situation to be the essential heuristic basis of linguistic analysis. The chapters present and employ a new, transparent and accessible contact linguistic vocabulary to aid reader comprehension, and explore a wide range of language contact situations in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Latin America, Asia and the Pacific. Book SynopsisAs children begin to use language in early childhood, they produce increasingly large units of coherent speech, including narrative descriptions of events. This book examines the process of narrative development in young children, focusing on the development of ''cohesion'' - the use of speech and gesture to create coherent perspectives on events. Surveying early narrative development in which gesture plays an integral part, the book explores the development of cohesive, clause-linking devices during the period from age two to three. Illustrated with longitudinal cases studies, the book examines the crib-talk of two-year-old Emily and compares it to the discourse patterns of storybooks and nursery rhymes, and to her father''s pre-bedtime routines. In a second case study, the authors trace the changing relationships between speech and gesture in the spontaneous narratives of two-year-old Ella. This book will be invaluable to students and researchers in language acquisition, developmental psychology and gesture studies.Table of Contents1.
