Rowman & Littlefield The 100 Greatest American Athletes

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisFrom Babe Ruth to Michael Phelps, Billie Jean King to Tony Hawk, American athletes have been a source of pride and accomplishment throughout the nation’s history. While there have been plenty of athlete biographies, sports profiles, and behind-the scenes looks at various professional sports, no book has attempted to rank the greatest American athletes of all time. Until now. In The 100 Greatest American Athletes, Martin Gitlin ranks the best of the best using a point system to assess each individual’s achievements, versatility, and athleticism, as well as the physical requirements of the sport or sports in which they participated. The final tally of these points provides the ranking for each athlete in the book, which is sure to spark lively conversation. Some of the most iconic names in sports history can be found here, including Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, Larry Byrd, LeBron James, Mickey Mantle, Joe Montana, Jesse Owens, Mark Spitz, Tiger Woods, and Babe Didrikson Zaharias. It can be difficult to compare bobsledders to boxers, figure-skaters to football players, shot-putters to skiers. This book, however, attempts to do just that in an accurate, fair manner that honors those who made valuable contributions to American sports and culture. Sports fans will undoubtedly enjoy debating the ranking of these remarkable individuals, making The 100 Greatest American Athletes a must read.Trade ReviewHaving known Martin Gitlin for many years, provocative is not a word I would use to describe him. But provocative is the best word to describe his latest work. What a great read. -- Tony Grossi, NFL and Cleveland Browns analyst for ESPN Cleveland and 850 WKNR radio, voting member of the Pro Football Hall of FameTable of ContentsIntroduction 1: Jim Thorpe: The Sports Conqueror 2: Michael Jordan: His Airness 3: Bob Mathias: The Manchild 4: Jim Brown: The Indestructible 5: Michael Phelps: The Baltimore Bullet 6: Deion Sanders: Prime Time 7: LeBron James: The Chosen One 8: Jackie Joyner-Kersee: Magnificent Heptathlete 9: Rafer Johnson: Renaissance Man 10: Muhammad Ali: The Louisville Lip 11: Willie Mays: The Say Hey Kid 12: Babe Ruth: The Sultan of Swat 13: Ashton Eaton: Wheels 14: Babe Didrikson Zaharias: The Master of All 15: Wilt Chamberlain: Wilt the Stilt 16: Jackie Robinson: The Barrier Breaker 17: Rickey Henderson: The Man of Steal 18: Bo Jackson: The Freakish Talent 19: Jesse Owens: To Hell with Hitler 20: Henry Aaron: Hammerin’ Hank 21: Tom Brady: Tom Terrific 22: Lawrence Taylor: L.T. 23: Carl Lewis: King Carl 24: Reggie White: The Minister of Defense 25: Bruce Jenner: Bruiser 26: Ray Robinson: Sugar 27: Don Hutson: The Alabama Antelope 28: Bob Hayes: Bullet Bob 29: Bill Russell: Mr. 11 Rings 30: Deacon Jones: The Secretary of Defense 31: Sandy Koufax: The Left Arm of God 32: Mickey Mantle: The Mick 33: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar: The Big ‘A’ 34: Lou Gehrig: The Iron Horse 35: Emlen Tunnell: Offense on Defense 36: Jerry West: Zeke from Cabin Creek 37: Anthony Munoz: The Great Protector 38: Oscar Charleston: The Black Ty Cobb 39: Earvin Johnson: Magic 40: Joe Louis: The Brown Bomber 41: Kobe Bryant: The Black Mamba 42: Serena Williams: Momma Smash 43: Honus Wagner: The Flying Dutchman 44: Julius Erving: Dr. J 45: Gale Sayers: The Kansas Comet 46: Mary Wambach: Abby 47: Jerry Rice: Flash 80 48: Pete Sampras: Pistol Pete 49: Eric Heiden: The Record Breaker 50: Shaun White: The Flying Tomato 51: Simone Biles: Simoney 52: Stan Musial: Stan the Man 53: Willie Pep: Will ‘o the Wisp 54: Walter Payton: Sweetness 55: Althea Gibson: The Tenacious One 56: Henry Armstrong: Homicide Hank 57: Joe Montana: Joe Cool 58: Mike Tyson: The Baddest Man on the Planet 59: Dick Butkus: The Maestro of Mayhem 60: Tracy Caulkins: The Medley Sensation 61: Michael Johnson: The Duck 62: Bob Beamon: Leap of a Lifetime 63: Oscar Robertson: The Big O 64: Mike Schmidt: Iron Mike 65: Larry Bird: The Hick from French Lick 66: Lindsey Vonn: Kildon 67: Karl Malone: The Mailman 68: Mike Trout: The Millville Meteor 69: Cheryl Miller: Big Sister 70: Mark Spitz: Mark the Shark 71: Tony Hawk: The Bird Man 72: Joe DiMaggio: The Yankee Clipper 73: Peggy Fleming: The Steel-Nerved Skater from San Jose 74: Walter Johnson: The Big Train 75: Barry Sanders: The Little Fella 76: Ty Cobb: The Georgia Peach 77: Bonnie Blair: The Blue 78: Secretariat: Big Red 79: Rocky Marciano: The Brockton Blockbuster 80: Red Grange: The Galloping Ghost 81: Chris Chelios: The Godfather of USA Hockey 82: Chris Evert: The Ice Maiden 83: Al Oerter: He-Man Heave Man 84: Mary T. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisQuality researchuniquely enhanced by the author’s personal experience! In one of the first books to examine machismo from the perspective of Latin American and Latino men, Chris Girman relies on a compelling combination of ethnographic research and personal experience to explain how macho menmen like the author himselfregulate and sustain same-sex erotic encounters. Girman incorporates his own sexual experiences with a variety of Latin men into the book, infusing his writing with the unique perspective and vivid description that can only be related by someone who has lived the research he writes about. While most of the literature on Latin American male same-sex desire ignores the significance of the male body in its investigation, this book shows why it is essential to focus on the macho male body and re-evaluates so-called machismo to forge a more nuanced description of Latin American masculinity. Girman incorporates his own sexual experiences with a variety of Latin American men into the book, infusing his writing with the unique perspective and vivid descriptions that can only be related by someone who has lived the research he writes about. With this book, you’ll become familiar with various kinds of Latin-American homosexual behavior. Here’s a glimpse at what you’ll find inside: Machismo, Practice Theorists, and Macho Performance summarizes previous research on Latin American male [homo]sexuality and defines the author’s concept of machismo and Latin American masculinity. Head, Hands, Balls, and Ass shows why focusing on the body as living matter, rather than metaphor (as is done in so many other books on sexuality), is the ideal point of entry into the study of Latin American male [homo]sexuality and masculinity. This chapter focuses on specific regions of the macho bodyhead, hands, balls, and assto explain how machismo actually promotes, rather than denies, sexual encounters between men. It also shows the importance of the Latin American family as a variable that structures the manner and frequency in which [homo]sexual encounters occur. The Dominican Tíguere and Hegemonic Masculinities takes a specific look at a very peculiar form of hegemonic masculinityrelying on cunning more than strength to come out on topthat is indigenous to the Dominican Republic. This chapter also tells the stories of five of the author’s sexual encounters in that nation and discusses the tiguere style of masculine performance. Desire in a Costa Rican Prison analyzes the ways in which desire, power, and pleasure are constituted in the Latin American prison environment. Historical Representations of Same-Sex Desire examines two short storiesEl Matadero (Esteban Echeverria) and Comienza el Desfile (Reinaldo Arenas), which highlight male eroticism as important concepts within discourses on national identity. Both stories conceptualize same-sex desire within specific historical moments and demonstrate how male [homo]sexuality emerges and represents itself not in contrast to the dominant discourse, but within that discourse itself. Familiar, Familial Voices: Latino Men Speak Out documents the voices of gay-identified Latino men living in Central Texasmen who have come to love other Latin, Black, and Anglo men in the context of very full lives. These men reveal their conceptions of identity, race, performance, resistance, family, pleasure, desire, masculinity, silence, and place. Performing Matter[s]-Masculinity, the Male Body, and the Evocation of the [non]real defies the notion that written representations can capture the lived realities of Table of Contents Foreword (Robert A. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisWhat constitutes lesbian identity? The term homonormativity describes current prevailing idealized assumptions about lesbian identity. This concept, however, marginalizes subgroups within the greater lesbian population. Challenging Lesbian Norms: Intersex, Transgender, Intersectional, and Queer Perspectives dynamically confronts homonormativity in lesbian communities by presenting expert multidisciplinary discussion about what is a definable lesbian identity. This text sensitively explores difficult issues about gender policing and the viewpoints in lesbian communities that hold that transgender, intersectional, and queer individuals are considered to have 'false consciousness.' Consequences of lesbian normativity, both for lesbian communities and for marginalized groups are examined through literary criticism, lesbian, feminist, and queer theories, corporeal philosophy, film, television, cultural criticism, personal narratives, public health, and field research. The issue of the authenticity of lesbian identity causes rifts between some lesbian communities and the groups that strive to be included, yet are still marginalized. Challenging Lesbian Norms directly exposes practices and beliefs within lesbian communities that lead to the assumption of the prototypical lesbian. The book courageously reveals the similarities of lesbian normative stances with other views such as Christian conservative rhetoric, and reviews the health consequences of being marginalized within the lesbian communities. This text actively challenges the foundational notion within lesbian communities that a stable, immutable lesbian sex exists.Topics in Challenging Lesbian Norms include: human physiology, the flexibility of sexuality, and biologic determinism marginalization within lesbian communities transexualism and Lesbian Theory gender and sexual identity construction, partnering practices, and issues involving queer-identified youth demystification of the gay vibe from a femme queer woman’s perspective lesbian feminism, gender policing, and casting butch, FTM, and transgendered subjectivities as false conciousness representations of lesbians in television movies Native-American two-spirit women teaching transgender, and its transformative effect identity modeling inclusion of transgender and intersex individuals within the lesbian communities transgender characters in film Latina lesbians and mental health Challenging Lesbian Norms is stimulating, eye-opening reading that is perfect for activists, educators and students in LGBT and women’s studies, and public health professionals.Table of Contents Introduction: Challenging Lesbian Normativity (Angela Pattatucci-Aragón) Fleshy Specificity: (Re)considering Transsexual Subjects in Lesbian Communities (Kelly Coogan) The Invisible Body of Queer Youth: Identity and Health in the Margins of Lesbian and Trans Communities (Dorinda L. The editors of Male Intergenerational Intimacy have solicited original research and literature reviews which do not digress into emotional arguments for or against intergenerational intimacy but instead aim to establish the basics for a research-based scholarship. The contributors address the implications of intergenerational intimacy on a variety of levels--from friendship and companionship through sexual dimensions--and further analyze personal accounts to illustrate how individuals involved in intergenerational intimacy understand themselves and how they construct their concepts of intimacy and sexual identity. Contributors also deal with intergenerational intimacy behaviors that require counseling, treatment, and psychotherapeutic interventions from a positive approach. 1 in stock

Book SynopsisDespite controversies over current educational practices, Texas boasts a rich and vibrant bilingual tradition - and not just for Spanish-English instruction, but for Czech, German, Polish, and Dutch as well. Over the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Texas educational policymakers embraced, ignored, rejected, outlawed, and then once again embraced this tradition. In ""The Strange Career of Bilingual Education in Texas, 1836-1981"", Carlos Kevin Blanton traces the educational policies and their underlying rationales, from Stephen F. Austin's proposal in the 1830s to ""Mexicanize"" Anglo children by teaching them Spanish along with English and French, through the 1981 passage of the most encompassing bilingual education law in the state's history. Drawing on primary materials, Blanton presents the Texas experience in light of national trends and movements, such as Progressive Education, the Americanization Movement, and the Good Neighbor Movement. By tracing the many changes that eventually led to the re-establishment of bilingual education in its modern form in the 1960s and the 1981 passage of a landmark state law, Blanton reconnects Texas with its bilingual past.

Book SynopsisUsing shaggy dog stories based on classic literature, the Polettes address common spelling and grammatical errors and the ways in which children can be taught to read critically to recognize them. Stories such as Rapunzel, Alice, The Hare and the Tortoise, and King Arthur, purposely embedded with common errors, have been pretested in teacher workshops given by Nancy Polette and in Dr. Keith Polette's classes at the University of Texas, El Paso. Teachers found them specific enough to be used directly in the writing instruction curriculum and fun for students to read and try to figure out. Each full-page reproducible story and its corrected counterpart focus on common errors (incorrect use of quotation marks, end marks, capitalization, apostrophes, semicolons, run on sentences, homophones, verb usage, etc.). An appendix offers answer explanations, rules to be learned and taught, and more. A unique glimpse into the history of early-modern religious thought, this reference work includes extensive articles on the various collections of believers both Christian and non-Christian. Blunt, in a move that presaged the more comprehensive modern studies of the phenomenon of religious diversification, included exotic religions that were beginning to be taken seriously during his century.

Book SynopsisWatch the excitement ripple through your classroom as students use their intellect to find out who committed the "crime" at your school. Enliven your students as they practice critical thinking skills. Students are often taught skills such as the scientific method, scientific research, critical thinking, making observations, analyzing facts, and drawing conclusions in isolation. Studying forensic science allows students to practice these skills and see theories put into practice by using circumstances that model real-life events, meanwhile letting students explore a variety of career options. This exciting unit includes: background information on forensics, exploration of careers in forensic science and law enforcement, a simulation involving a fire in the school library, and instructions for writing your own crime scene simulation. To crack the case, students examine evidence left at the scene, interview suspects (staff members), and use critical thinking to connect all of the clues and eliminate suspects. Students will feel like real investigators with this true-to-life simulation.Let your students solve more mysteries with Mystery Disease, Mystery Science, Detective Club, and The Great Chocolate Caper.Grades 5-8Trade ReviewThis book presents a highly engaging unit combining criminal investigation, careers in forensic science, and types of evidence. In the culminating activity, students and faculty participate in a simulation of a school-wide arson investigation. Critical analysis of evidence, inference in questioning suspects, determining reasonability of relevant information, and drawing conclusions are among the critical thinking skills honed by students as they work to crack the case and discover the true criminal. This workbook is so well thought out that if a teacher had the time and cooperation of the [school] staff to conduct the simulation, it would undoubtedly be an educational experience students would not only benefit from but also remember for a lifetime.,Tina Forester,Texas Association for the Gifted and Talented, 5/1/04Table of ContentsGeneral Information Information for the Instructor Lesson Plans Pre-Simulation Information Criminal Investigations Criminal Investigations Information Forensic Careers Forensic Career Presentation Forensic Career Worksheet Forensic Career Assignment All Kinds of Evidence Assignment Planning Guide Grading Rubric Crime Scene Simulation The Case of The Blazing Books Overview and Motive Preparing Materials Gathering Evidence Setting up the Labs Setting up the Scene Viewing the Crime Scene Student Procedures Questioning Procedures Teacher’s Role Examining Evidence Charging a Suspect Supporting Materials Chart of Roles Sample News Article Witness Role Description Suspect Role Description Suspect Evidence Request Suspect Handwriting Sample Suspect Identification Card Suspect and Witness Profiles Detective Report Forensic Laboratory Materials Evidence Request Card Evidence Log Blood Evidence Procedures Blood Report Procedures for All Other Labs Fingerprint Report Arson Report Shoe Print Report Hair Report Handwriting Report Creating Your Own Simulation Customizing the Simulation Appendix Arson Motives Fast Facts on Fires

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisSemiotic engineering was originally proposed as a semiotic approach to designing user interface languages. Over the years, with research done at the Department of Informatics of the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro, it evolved into a semiotic theory of human-computer interaction (HCI). It views HCI as computer-mediated communication between designers and users at interaction time. The system speaks for its designers in various types of conversations specified at design time. These conversations communicate the designers' understanding of who the users are, what they know the users want or need to do, in which preferred ways, and why. The designers' message to users includes even the interactive language in which users will have to communicate back with the system in order to achieve their specific goals. Hence, the process is, in fact, one of communication about communication, or metacommunication. Semiotic engineering has two methods to evaluate the quality of metacommunication in HCI: the semiotic inspection method (SIM) and the communicability evaluation method (CEM). Up to now, they have been mainly used and discussed in technical contexts, focusing on how to detect problems and how to improve the metacommunication of specific systems. In this book, Clarisse de Souza and Carla Leitão discuss how SIM and CEM, which are both qualitative methods, can also be used in scientific contexts to generate new knowledge about HCI. The discussion goes into deep considerations about scientific methodology, calling the reader's attention to the essence of qualitative methods in research and the kinds of results they can produce. To illustrate their points, the authors present an extensive case study with a free open-source digital audio editor called Audacity. They show how the results obtained with a triangulation of SIM and CEM point at new research avenues not only for semiotic engineering and HCI but also for other areas of computer science such as software engineering and programming.Table of Contents Introduction Essence of Semiotic Engineering Semiotic Engineering Methods Case Study with Audacity Lessons Learned with Semiotic Engineering Methods The Near Future of Semiotic Engineering

This unofficial resource at last takes notary prep to the next level by revealing the tricks of questions and formats, tactics for the test, and the law behind it.Louisiana civil law notaries have unmatched functions, responsibilities, and opportunities-but the exam averages a 20% pass rate. Candidates need all the help they can get. The best prep classes and study groups recommend multiple practice questions to understand the format, content, and coverage of the actual exams the Secretary of State administers each year. Yet even the best workbooks and study aids are costly but barebones in the answers they provide. Their questions help, but students are left matching answers to page numbers. There''s no guidance on why they''re right-and even less about why other good options aren''t "best."This book fills that void with 130 questions and detailed clarifications, plus tactics illustrated by specific formats and options. Explanations are keyed in detail to the 2022 Fundamentals (state study guide). Dr. Childress, author of a best-selling supplemental book decoding the state study guide and teacher of Tulane''s undergraduate course in notary law, explains every twist he can think of that the examiners may try. Whether as a recommended supplement to a prep class, as spelled-out lagniappe to other available workbooks, or as a new tool for self-study, this workbook should become standard fare for anyone contemplating becoming a commissioned notary. An affordable addition to the Self-Study Sherpa Series from Quid Pro Books, in quality trade paperback.

Book SynopsisA comic masterpiece of medieval French literature, Aucassin and Nicolette is categorized by its anonymous author as a “chantefable”, or “song-story”, and is the only known work of this kind. This edition includes the thirteenth-century French text and a modern English translation on facing pages. An introduction outlines the text’s background, genre, literary relations, historical contexts, major themes, and relevance to a contemporary audience. Its alternating sections of verse and prose recount a story of love between the aristocratic but distinctly unheroic young lord Aucassin and his beloved Nicolette. Despite familial disapproval, class and ethnic differences, imprisonment, and geographical separation, Nicolette’s single-minded pursuit of Aucassin raises interesting questions about gender roles and their depiction in the Middle Ages. The issue of identity is also addressed, as the identity of Nicolette shifts in terms of class, religion, and ethnicity: born a Muslim princess, she becomes both a slave and a Christian convert, and is eventually recaptured by her Saracen family, much to her displeasure. With its daring escapes, its descriptions of travel to exotic lands, its separations, and its happy reunions, Aucassin and Nicolette is both a classic romantic comedy and an entertaining parody of the romance genre.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book chronicles the journey of seven schools serving students of poverty, English Language Learners (ELLs), and students of color, which were able to sustain school improvement for a decade on either state and/or national criteria that measure student performance outcomes. The book shares stories of these seven schools and demonstrates that it takes an entire school working together with their communities, adding to the social and cultural capital of their students and families, to create and nurture what we call a Learning Partnership for sustainable school improvement. The answers for how these schools sustained school improvement and are effective schools is evident from their school student metrics that validate the school's ability to meet and sustain external mandates of high performance over time. The seven individual case stories illustrate that what matters most is what happens in the school itself. It is the internal culture of caring and respecting each other and working from an additive perspective of valuing students for their unique gifts and abilities, rather than exclusively focusing on increasing test scores that makes these school stories unique. This is not about heroic leadership but leadership spread out and shared among professionals working together to achieve common goals around shared values and beliefs. This book is about using resources in ways that value human capital as the greatest asset in the school to ensure that educators feel a sense of commitment, connection, and passion for their work together with students, their families, and their communities that enable them to excel together. We offer readers seven cases that demonstrate there is no cookie cutter approach to having an effective school. Rather, there is a theory-in-practice that grounds the Learning Partnership depicted as a tree within a sustainable school improvement culture. This sustainable culture connects shared leadership and accountability, resourcefulness, a humanistic philosophy, additive schooling and results in an organization synergy that sustains organizational and collective efficacy for achieving results in these schools that other educators in schools with similar demographics are often unable to sustain or attain.

Book SynopsisThis volume focuses on a relatively neglected area of management consulting, the education of consultants. In today's business world, we find training programs provided by consultancies, certification programs provided by professional organisations, on-the-job training of consultants with formal or informal supervision, self-taught professionals, and some academic programs and courses. Is that enough? No, better consultants are needed to handle the complexity and changing nature of business. Academe is in the best position to provide the critical thinking preparation necessary. Yet, academic institutions have been slow in embracing this challenge. The role of academia needs to grow in magnitude and in certain directions that educate consultants beyond industry training practices. Chapter authors provide examples of innovative programs, topical approaches for courses, and thoughtful reflections on the role academia can play in preparing better consultants. There are lessons for business schools, consultancies, and aspiring and practising consultants.Table of ContentsPreface, Anthony F. Buono. Introduction, Susan M. Adams and Alberto Zanzi.
