Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Clothing Poverty: The Hidden World of Fast
Book SynopsisHave you ever stopped and wondered where your jeans came from? Who made them and where? Ever wondered where they end up after you donate them for recycling? Following a pair of jeans, Clothing Poverty takes the reader on a vivid around-the-world tour to reveal how clothes are manufactured and retailed, bringing to light how fast fashion and recycling are interconnected. Andrew Brooks shows how recycled clothes are traded across continents, uncovers how retailers and international charities are embroiled in commodity chains which perpetuate poverty, and exposes the hidden trade networks which transect the globe. In this new and updated edition, Brooks retraces his steps to look at the fashion industry today, and considers how, if at all, the industry has changed in response to mounting consumer pressure for more ethical clothing. Stitching together rich narratives, from Mozambican markets, Nigerian smugglers and Chinese factories to London’s vintage clothing scene, TOMS shoes and Vivienne Westwood’s ethical fashion lines, Brooks uncovers the many hidden sides of fashion.Trade ReviewAn interesting and important account. * Daily Telegraph *Revealing. * Independent *Brooks packs a great deal of such detail into a fast-paced and readable book. * Morning Star *This engaging and well-written book focuses on some of the least explored outcomes of the fast-fashion system we all live in – that is, what we increasingly and quickly cast off. * Alessandra Mezzadri, SOAS, University of London *Thought-provoking and insightful. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Edwardian Fashion
Book SynopsisRenowned for its graciousness and elegance, the fashions of the 1910s would undergo some quite revolutionary changes. In the early years of Edward VII''s reign fashionable ladies wore delicately colored, flower-and-lace-trimmed trailing gowns over tight corsets, accessorized by elaborate hairstyles. Women scoured the new fashion magazines to see the new designs from Parisian couturiers, such as Worth and Jeanne Paquin. From around 1906, these excessively luxurious fashions began to fade away, with a new designer, Paul Poiret, causing a stir with his richly colored column gowns and turbans. By 1914, women''s wear was transformed with women wearing boldly colored, dramatically stylized Eastern-inspired kimono wraps, slender hobble skirts, ankle-skimming tunic dresses and turbans. Daniel Milford-Cottam explains these new developments in fashion, and how different fashions were worn by both the most fashionable ladies, and those on more limited budgets. The book will also look at the evoluTable of ContentsIntroduction: Setting the Scene / 1901–5: An Era of Unremitting Opulence / 1906–10: Artistic Modes and the Directoire Girl / Menswear: Morning Coats and Lounge Suits / 1910–14: Hobble Skirts and Exoticism / Epilogue: The First World War / Further Reading / Index

Bloomsbury Publishing Plc Veil
Book SynopsisObject Lessons is a series of short, beautifully designed books about the hidden lives of ordinary things. The veil can be an instrument of feminist empowerment, and veiled anonymity can confer power to women. Starting from her own marriage ceremony at which she first wore a full veil, Rafia Zakaria examines how veils do more than they get credit for. Part memoir and part philosophical investigation, Veil questions that what is seen is always good and free, and that what is veiled can only signal servility and subterfuge. From personal encounters with the veil in France (where it is banned) to Iran (where it is compulsory), Zakaria shows how the garment's reputation as a pre-modern relic is fraught and up for grabs. The veil is an object in constant transformation, whose myriad meanings challenge the absolute truths of patriarchy. Object Lessons is published in partnership with an essay series in The Atlantic.Trade ReviewRafia Zakaria, journalist and author, unravels the complex nexus of attitudes, policies, and histories revolving around this object in her fascinating new book, Veil. She demonstrates how the object can serve as a moral delineator, a disciplinary measure, a signifier of goodness, or as a means to subvert or rebel social norms. Through personal narratives and detailed analysis of various social and political conditions Zakaria offers an engaging and nuanced assessment of the veil in the contemporary context. * New Books Network *An intellectually bracing, beautifully written exploration of an item of clothing all too freighted with meaning. * Molly Crabapple, artist, journalist, and author of Drawing Blood (2015) *Rafia Zakaria’s Veil shifts the balance away from white secular Europe toward the experience of Muslim women, mapping the stereotypical representations of the veil in Western culture and then reflecting, in an intensely personal way, on the many meanings that the veil can have for the people who wear it … Zakaria’s more personal, philosophical approach is intended to contest the singular meaning that the veil has acquired in much of the West. By exploring the subjective experiences of the veil, we begin to see how both wearing it and not wearing it have profound psychic resonances for those who make these choices, as well as for those who regard it with hostility or even just curiosity … [Veil is] useful and important, providing needed insight and detail to deepen our understanding of how we got here—a necessary step for thinking about whether and how we might be able to move to a better place. * Joan W. Scott, The Nation *I admired Rafia Zakaria’s Veil months even before I read it … Her engaging prose is just what I hoped to find inside this little book, which is composed of short vignettes on the veil rather than a sustained philosophical treaty. * Reading Religion *Slim but formidable. * London Review of Books *Table of ContentsIntroduction 1. Book SynopsisWhilst seemingly simple garments such as the tunic remained staples of the classical wardrobe, sources from the period reveal a rich variety of changing styles and attitudes to clothing across the ancient world. Covering the period 500 BCE to 800 CE and drawing on sources ranging from extant garments and architectural iconography to official edicts and literature, this volume reveals Antiquity's preoccupation with dress, which was matched by an appreciation of the processes of production rarely seen in later periods. From a courtesan's sheer faux-silk garb to the sumptuous purple dyes of an emperor's finery, clothing was as much a marker of status and personal expression as it was a site of social control and anxiety. Contemporary commentators expressed alarm in equal measure at the over-dressed, the excessively ascetic or at barbarian' silhouettes. ACC Art Books Diana: A Life in Dresses: From Debutante to Style
Book Synopsis"... fashion journalist Claudia Joseph opens the door to the world’s most coveted closet." — Elle "Diana: A Life in Dresses chronicles Princess Diana’s sartorial evolution from her early shopping days at Harrods to working with world-renowned designers like Catherine Walker." — Harpers Bazaar "This stylish survey traces Di’s evolution from unsophisticated debutante to fashion icon, telling the stories behind her most famous, and infamous, dresses." — New York Post ‘I literally had one long dress, one silk shirt, one smart pair of shoes and that was it’ – so Princess Diana said of the day she and Prince Charles got engaged. Sixteen years later, Diana would die, no longer the girl with one dress, but a global fashion icon who had raised more than £2 million for charity by selling 79 of her dresses at Christie’s auction house in New York. This chic and stylish book opens Diana’s wardrobe to the world. From the Regamus debutante’s dress Diana wore at a ball at Althorp, her family estate, to her infamous Christina Stambolian ‘Revenge’ dress, which she wore on the night Prince Charles publicly admitted his adultery with Camilla Parker Bowles, each iconic moment is captured in these pages. Claudia Joseph chronicles Diana’s style evolution from the days she shopped with her mother for her wedding trousseau at Harrods, to her discovery of her wedding dress designers, the Emanuels, and her relationship with Vogue fashion director Anna Harvey, who introduced her to designers such as Catherine Walker, Jacques Azagury and Versace. She looks at the designers who shaped Diana’s image and tracks down her most symbolic dresses to museums around the world.Trade Review"Fashion journalist Claudia Joseph says Diana's impact on British culture was 'vital' highlighting how she 'spoke for a section of society that had been ignored up until then'." - LBC radio"A new book out from ACC ART BOOKS, fashion journalist Claudia Joseph opens the door to the world’s most coveted closet." - Elle"Diana: A Life in Dresses chronicles Princess Diana’s sartorial evolution from her early shopping days at Harrods to working with world-renowned designers like Catherine Walker." - Harpers Bazaar"See never-before-seen sketches of Princess Diana's most iconic outfits." - Tom + Lorenzo"Princess Diana’s legacy reaches far beyond fashion, but she is still the 20th century’s greatest style icon." - Yahoo News"Diana, Princess of Wales's wardrobe was the envy of women all over the world and her trailblazing sense of style inspired copycats everywhere." - Hello"The American press dubbed the showstopper the "Revenge Dress," while Britain’s Telegraph newspaper described it as the "pièce de résistance," and claimed it was "possibly the most strategic dress ever worn by a woman in modern times."" - InStyle"This stylish survey traces Di’s evolution from unsophisticated debutante to fashion icon, telling the stories behind her most famous, and infamous, dresses." - New York Post"Diana used the dress to reclaim her space in the narrative—asserting herself and her independence." - Town and Country Magazine"Before she was to marry the future King of England, Lady Diana Spencer was a shy young debutante with a sparse – and far from designer – wardrobe. Book SynopsisFashion History: A Global View proposes a new perspective on fashion history. Arguing that fashion has occurred in cultures beyond the West throughout history, this groundbreaking book explores the geographic places and historical spaces that have been largely neglected by contemporary fashion studies, bringing them together for the first time.Reversing the dominant narrative that privileges Western Europe in the history of dress, Welters and Lillethun adopt a cross-cultural approach to explore a vast array of cultures around the globe. Case studies include the cross-cultural trade of silk textiles in Central Asia, the indigenous dress of the Americas and of Hawai''i, the cosmetics of the Tang Dynasty in China, and stylistic innovation in sub-Saharan Africa. HarperCollins Publishers To Die for Is Fashion Wearing Out the World
Book SynopsisAn expose on the fashion industry written by the Observer''s ''Ethical Living'' columnist, examining the inhumane and environmentally devastating story behind the clothes we so casually buy and wear.Coming at a time when the global financial crisis and contracting of consumer spending is ushering in a new epoch for the fashion industry, To Die For offers a very plausible vision of how green could really be the new black.Taking particular issue with our current mania for both big-name labels and cheap fashion, To Die For sets an agenda for the urgent changes that can and need to be made by both the industry and the consumer. Far from outlining a future of drab, ethical clothing, Lucy Siegle believes that it is indeed possible to be an ''ethical fashionista'', simply by being aware of how and where (and by whom) clothing is manufactured. The global banking crisis has put the consumer at a crossroads: when money is tight should we embrace cheap fast fashion to prop up an already engorged w

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Intersection of Fashion and Disability
Book SynopsisThe history of the fashion industry has been well written as it relates to people who conform to certain physical norms and cultural stereotypes, whereas the inequality in access to the world of fashion has been largely ignored. Despite this lack of coverage, much work has taken place over the centuries to enable people who live with disability to participate in fashionable culture. This book tells that story via perspectives of notable historical figures, events and movements, and continues the discourse with a look at some of the contemporary developments in clothing and fashion. The Intersection of Fashion and Disability takes the long view, from early attempts to conceal unsightly' bodies of royalty and nobility via creative innovation through growing contemporary awareness of inclusive fashion and how future work can be driven by technology and cultural acceptance.Trade ReviewInfused in a historical context of adapted clothing designs, lies a recurrent reminder to each of us with disabilities that we deserve continued designs to assure our unadulterated inclusion in society. From the moment we wake and get dressed in the morning until we get undressed again in the evening, fashion is a central medium through which we experience the world and negotiate our place within it. Because of this, the ways that supposedly ordinary' and everyday' fashion objects have been designed, manufactured, worn, cared for, and remembered matters deeply to our historical understanding.Beginning at 1550 the start of an era during which the word fashion' came to mean stylistic change rather than the act of making each chapter explores the definition of everyday fashion and how this has changed over time, demonstrating innovative methodologies for researching the everyday. The variety and significance of everyday fashioTrade ReviewDrawing on a wonderfully rich collection of fashion stories, this thought-provoking and timely volume explores the multifarious ways we experience and understand the everyday, challenging limited and narrow notions and prompting us to adopt new perspectives on ‘history from below’. * Rachel Worth, Arts University Bournemouth, UK *This generous – and generative – volume sets a new standard for studies of everyday fashion. Bringing together intriguing insights on specific clothing artefacts with new analytical approaches to fashion history, this book encourages readers to dig through their own closets, or the rails of a local thrift shop, to reveal the many histories that clothing holds. * Marina Moskowitz, University of Wisconsin-Madison, USA *Table of ContentsList of Figures List of Tables List of Contributors Acknowledgments 1. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Mavericks
Book SynopsisArtfully combining sports journalism with social history and sharp pop culture references, The Mavericks explores 1970s football when a cult group of footballers delivered flair on the pitch and flamboyance off of it. Cocky, coiffured strikers meet David Bowie and Alvin Stardust; Gola boots exchange kicks with A Clockwork Orange and The Likely Lads; Admiral sock tags, platform heels and kipper ties mingle with cod wars, Harrods bombings and three-day weeks. In this, Steen recreates the early Seventies, the era when football joined the vanguard of English youth culture. This personal account revolves around seven Englishmen who followed in the trail blazed by football''s first tabloid star, George Best--Stan Bowles, Tony Currie, Charlie George, Alan Hudson, Rodney Marsh, Peter Osgood and Frank Worthington. Proud individuals amid an increasingly corporate environment, their invention and artistry were matched only by a disdain for authority and convTrade ReviewQuite splendid... just delicious – and brilliantly researched. * The Times *A lovely read, the kind in which you constantly annoy people by reading the funny bits out loud * Irish Post *A great book * Henry Winter *If you enjoyed The Damned United you will savour Rob Steen's The Mavericks, an evocative look at football when the game was enhanced by genuinely edgy entertainers rather than overpaid characterless robots. * Waterstones.com *The Mavericks is irresistible, artfully combining sports journalism with social history and sharp pop-culture references. * Impact *In an era of PR-bleaching and PC-niceties, The Mavericks is an oasis of flair, hair and devil-may-care attitude. Wonderful evocation of the early 70s, an era when players weren't afraid to express themselves - on the pitch or in the bar. -- Kevin Mitchell * The Guardian *One of the conundrums of football in the Seventies, now perceived as a golden age by a certain generation, is why did England fail to qualify for the 1974 and 1978 World Cup when a decade before they had been world champions? One of the main reasons is that managers Ramsey then Revie shunned a group of hugely gifted 'Rock and Roll' players - Marsh, Currie, Bowles, Osgood, George, Hudson and Worthington. Bloomsbury Publishing PLC The Fundamentals of Digital Fashion Marketing
Book SynopsisThe Fundamentals of Digital Fashion Marketing introduces and explores contemporary digital marketing practices within the fashion industry. Clare Harris clearly explains key digital marketing strategies and examines and illustrates their role in fashion through exciting and memorable industry examples. Marketing practices covered include online marketing, social media, video, mobile technologies, in-store technologies, augmented reality and digital spaces. The text features interviews and case studies from some of fashion''s biggest brands and most cutting-edge marketing companies, while also promoting active learning through engaging activities and exercises. This all combines to create a book that will inform, stimulate and inspire the next generation of creative marketers.Trade ReviewThis is a lively and visually stimulating book that covers all the key factors associated with digital fashion business. Overall, the content provides an accessible introduction to the digital fashion marketing subject and individually, the various chapters provide useful starting points for more in-depth research on key topics such as fashion blogging, mobile devices, analytics and fashion video. [This book] definitely fits the needs of our course and also aligns with the overall strategic direction of our department, which is to continue to be at the forefront of all things digital across marketing, communication, media, PR, events and fashion management. As we are not yet using a title that focuses specifically on Digital Fashion Marketing, the project has a real strength and relevance for our teaching. -- Karen Cross, Subject leader for Marketing, Fashion and Retail * Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, Scotland *I would use this book in two of my courses: Luxury Marketing (at the undergraduate level) and Entrepreneurship in the Business of Art (also undergraduate level). Marketing fashion and digital marketing is an important question and it is particularly so as it relates to luxury fashion brands. In Entrepreneurship this title will be useful because other types of products can be marketed digitally based on the fashion model. In other words, my students don’t necessarily focus on fashion (some of them do) but basically everyone would benefit from an in-depth view of how digital fashion marketing works (and why it is successful). The proposed book offers both a history of the digital space as it relates to the fashion industry AND a guide on how to profitably utilize the digital space (in all its iterations) to advance/promote/and sell fashion merchandize. In fact, this is the book’s strength as well. It is not only history, it is not just theory, it is a combination of history, theory, and practical advice derived from case studies and interviews with fashion professionals. -- Thomai Serdari, New York UniversityAn approachable, at-a-glance look at digital marketing for fashion. At the level it is pitched, it is a good offering... this sort of subject matter is pretty core to all fashion promotion/marketing courses. The author is obviously experienced in this area and seemingly a good person to write the book. -- Jon Cope, Senior Lecturer, University for the Creative Arts/Westminster University, LondonAs a focused fashion text for the digital age, this book is a great addition to the field and covers a variety of topics on the vastness of technology impacting fashion marketing. -- Tasha Lewis, Assistant Professor in Fashion Design Management, Cornell University, USAThis is a great introductory workbook for digital fashion marketing. It is written by a fashion expert in a simple jargon-free way that helps students understand the changing role of digital developments in the fashion system. -- Michelle Tellam Lawrence, Senior Lecturer, Fashion Marketing, Falmouth University, UKAn accessible how-to guide for digital fashion marketers that introduces fashion students to the latest industry practices using contemporary case studies in a key curriculum area. -- Natascha Radclyffe-Thomas, Course Leader BA Fashion Marketing, Fashion Business School, London College of Fashion, UKTable of ContentsIntroduction 1. Reaktion Books Merchants of Style: Art and Fashion After Warhol
Book SynopsisMerchants of Style explores the accelerating convergence of art and fashion, looking at the interplay of artists and designers - and the role of institutions, both public and commercial - that has brought about this marriage of aesthetic industries. Natasha Degen argues that one figure more than any other anticipated this moment: Andy Warhol. Beginning with an overview of art and fashion's deeply entwined histories before picking up where Warhol left off, Merchants of Style tells the story of art's emboldened forays into commerce and fashion's growing embrace of art. As the two industries draw closer together than ever before, this book addresses urgent questions about what the future holds.Trade Review'Merchants of Style is an astute exploration of the merging of culture and commerce. Intellect Books Fashion Education: The Systemic Revolution
Book SynopsisFashion Education explores how the classroom can transform the fashion industry towards body inclusion and social justice. The book is a collection of 17 essays by fashion educators from Australia, Canada, the US and the UK who recount their experiences, struggles and strategies of reimagining the exclusive foundation of fashion pedagogy and redesigning fashion curricula to centre Indigenous, Black, brown, fat, disabled, trans and queer worldviews, histories and bodies. This is the first book to explore the relationships between fashion pedagogy and social justice, and to map out new pedagogical frameworks and tools to redistribute power through fashion education. It shares the teaching practices of fashion educators implementing radical pedagogies and offers practical case studies that engage with a number of intersectional positions. Fashion Education engages with current pressing concerns for educators and is a valuable teaching resource for fashion educators – both theory and practice – working in art and design schools in Europe, the US and the UK. With chapters covering fashion theory, history, business, communication and design curricula to centre Indigenous, Black, brown, fat, disabled, trans, queer worldviews, histories and peoples it will appeal directly to the many disciplines within fashion. The discussions are also relevant to educators in other art, design and creative fields also looking to centre inclusion in their courses and the strategies presented will apply to them. Intellect Books Fashion Knowledge: Theories, Methods, Practices
Book SynopsisThis new edited collection assembles academic essays and intellectual activism equally next to visual essays and artistic interventions and proposes a different concept for fashion research that eschews the traditional logic of academic fashion studies. It features acclaimed designers, artists, curators and theorists whose work investigates the multi-faceted debates on the rise of practice-based research in fashion. The book sets out to explore current issues in fashion research with a particular focus on both methodology and expansion of the field to encompass overlooked voices and narratives. It has a particular concern with the relationships between theory and practice and with how knowledge is created and disseminated in fashion studies. It is an excellent and really valuable contribution to the field at a point both when fashion studies is expanding and when the fashion industry is at a crucial point of change. Some of the contributions were originally presented at a symposium hosted by the Austrian Center for Fashion Research ‘TALKSHOW: The politics of practice-based fashion research’ at Vienna’s Museum of Applied Arts, curated by Wally Salner. The symposium brought together a group of fashion scholars, designers, educators and practitioners to explore critical contemporary fashion (research) practices, and to investigate critical fashion knowledge between theory and practice, beyond assumed disciplinary and epistemological boundaries. Many contributions in this volume were initially presented at that symposium, while others are testimonies of international debates that were part of the research activities of the Austrian Center for Fashion Research, a research project funded by the Austrian Federal Ministry of Science Research and Economy, led by Elke Gaugele. The book is structured into three sections: Fashion Knowledge, Practice-Based Fashion Research, and Sites of Fashion and Politics. Contributions look at new forms of fashion knowledge that are forming with and along shifting fashion practices, practice-based fashion research, and sheds light on different sites and entanglements of fashion and politics in distinctive contemporary and historical moments of de/colonization, anti/racism, and anti/globalization. Elke Gaugele is cultural anthropologist and professor of fashion, styles and contextual design at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, Austria. Monica Titton is a sociologist, fashion theorist and senior scientist at the fashion design department of the University of Applied Arts Vienna, Austria. Other contributions are from Elke Bippus, Astrid Engl, Jojo Gronostay, Ruby Hoette, Bianca Koczan, Priska Morger, NCCFN, Wally Salner, Andreas Spiegl, José Teunissen, Lara Torres, Carol Tulloch and Maria Ziegelböck Readers will be academics, practitioners, designers, artists, curators, museums, theoretical scholars, lecturers, practice-based researchers, students and practitioners at all levels in the fields of fashion, textile, art and design. This new book with its original focus on practice-based research will be useful for a general and academic readership alike, and to all those working within the field of fashion studies, including those with a theoretical focus, fashion practitioners and those working within innovative pockets of the fashion industry. Trade Review'Fashion Knowledge offers a variety of thought-provoking methods and practices for critical interrogations. Two of the high points of the volume address decolonization: the first thinking through historical research and the second with a distinctly contemporary bend. [...] Gaugele, Titton and their contributors demonstrate that research methods are helpful to challenge existing ways of knowing and can be used to questioning historic structures and developing more equitable practices. [...] This is a thoughtful collection and critical intervention into research methods that is much needed. Gaugele and Titton should be lauded for pulling together these diverse voices, perspectives and efforts at decolonizing and democratizing fashion research. This volume is a welcomed step forward in the growing area of fashion studies and certainly has the potential to shift contemporary critical practices.' -- Myles Ethan Lascity, Fashion, Style & Popular CultureTable of ContentsIntroduction: The Politics of Fashion Knowledge between Practice and Theory 1 Elke Gaugele and Monica Titton PART I: FASHION KNOWLEDGE 13 1. NMSE - Publishing Ltd Little Black Dress: A Radical Fashion
Book SynopsisAt its inception, the ‘Little Black Dress’ was radically modern: a masculine-inspired, anti-traditionalist female attire. Yet it has remained a wardrobe staple for almost a century, each new silhouette redressing gendered boundaries of fashion to reflect evolving ideals of beauty and sexuality. In attempting to reconcile the historical study of fashion in the West with the reality of a global fashion system of production, distribution and consumption, and the urgent demand for the industry to be more aware of its footfalls in our culture, Little Black Dress: A Radical Fashion widens the lens through which we interpret the colour black. In this book, international scholars, curators and fashion writers explore how black’s paradoxical meanings have made the LBD simultaneously expressive of respect and rebellion, sophistication and dissident sexualities, piety and perversion. Bridging tradition and innovation, fashion and anti-fashion, the LBD emerges as a radical fashion for the 21st century.Table of ContentsForeword by Dr Christopher Breward / Well-mannered Black?: Fashion, Femininity and Feminism by Georgina Ripley / Spiritual Black by Lynne Hume / Sublime Black: Perfection of Line and Technical Wizardry by Iain R Webb / Black Will Take Any Other Hue by Makoto Ishizeki / LBD(SM) by Fiona Jardine / Fashion, Technology and the LBD by Pamela A Parmal / The Transmodern Little Black Dress by Georgina Ripley / Bibliography / Index

FreeLance Academy Press The Book of Historic Fashion: A Newcomer's Guide
Book SynopsisThe Late Middle Ages (c.1350 - 1500) provides us with many of our stock, childhood images of the 'Middle Ages': the knight in shining armour, the joust, lords and ladies dressed in rich, voluminous robes and elegant dresses. Yet it is a paradox, for at the start of the period, Europe had endured the worst pandemic of recorded history: the Black Death, the climate was rapidly cooling, causing massive crop failures and France and England were locked in the brutal, dynastic struggle of the Hundred Years War. Meanwhile, in the second half of the period, intrepid merchants became the new knighthood of Europe, seeking new wealth in Asia and Africa, and launching what has been called the 'Age of Discovery' while a new interest in Classical culture would give birth to the Renaissance. All of these elements have long intrigued and inspired writers, researchers and reenactors to take a trip through the looking glass to this lost world. In the Book of Historic Fashion: A Newcomer's Guide to Medieval Clothing (1300 - 1450), authors Allen and Mele provide a visual snap shot of the courtly elegance and common wear of the period. Filled with hundreds of sketches taken from original sources, mechanical drawings and detailed 'layer drawings' demonstrating how the clothing was worn, this entrée both introduces the period and helps newcomers find their way forward in the study of primary and secondary sources. Whether you are a teacher or professor who wants your students to understand what the clothing of the day really looked like, a costume designers working in theater, TV and film looking for visual reference or just new to medieval reenacting who wants guidance on what to wear in order to be appropriately dressed at events, this volume is for you.
