Die Einführung einer neuen Netzwerktechnik in die Feldebene der industriellen Produktion stellt jedoch eine besondere Herausforderung dar, da neben Netzwerkfunktionen eine echtzeitfähige Implementierung von Protokollen und spezifischen Anwendungen in die Feldgeräte erforderlich ist. Bei häufig geringen Stückzahlen der anwendungsspezifischen Geräte sind derartige Neuentwicklungen häufig wirtschaftlich nicht tragbar.
