Oxford University Press Revealing the Inner Worlds of Young Children
Book SynopsisTypically, we make sense of our experiences and interactions in a way that is guided by emotion and that takes the form of a narrative or a story. Using narratives, we can tell others about our experience, share common meanings, imagine possibilities, and co-construct new meanings. It is thus a momentous development when, at around age three, a child acquires the capacity to construct narratives. The book reports the work of a 20-year collaboration between 36 psychologists who have created and investigated a new tool to elicit and analyze children''s narratives. This tool is the MacArthur Story Stem Battery, a systematic collection of story beginnings that are referred to as ''stems.'' These stems are designed to elicit information from children about their representational worlds. This method is particularly exciting because using it allows developmental psychologists to gain information directly from children about their emotional states and what they are able to understand, and in tTrade Review"The Battery is a systematic group of story beginnings enacted in play that a consortium of researchers in psychology from Israel, the US, Britain, Switzerland, and Canada has developed as a new tool for eliciting a narrative that can reveal vivid aspects of a young child's inner world. They describe the approach, present case studiesand suggest how clinicians can use and adopt it." -SciTech.Table of Contents1. Early Narratives: A Window to the Child's Inner World ; 2. Oxford University Press Motivational Interviewing with Couples
Book SynopsisBased on more than ten years of research, Motivational Interviewing With Couples provides a comprehensive introduction to the theoretical foundations, processes, and strategies unique to Motivational Interviewing (MI) with couples. Drawing on Interdependence Theory, this approach to MI positions the couple as the client. Relationship functioning--the extent to which partners are satisfied with, invested in, and committed to the relationship--is viewed as a mechanism to achieve change. MI-based interventions historically have been shown effective in promoting behavior change across a broad range of problem areas, including substance use and sexual health, two issues that are discussed at length in the book. While the initial concepts of this intervention are substantially informed by work with sexual minority male couples, the principles can be applied broadly to couple-based processes relevant to a wide array of health behaviors and regardless of clients'' gender and sexual orientationTrade ReviewFor practitioners familiar with motivational interviewing (MI), this text is a major step forward when working with couples. The authors go well beyond MI for an identified patient with a supportive significant other, to ground their approach in the dynamics of interpersonal relationship. They write knowledgeably about the challenges and opportunities in using MI to address serious behavioral and medical problems, showing how dyadic MI differs from both individual and group counseling. It is the first book of its kind, a theoretically grounded and evidence-based way to practice MI conjointly with both heterosexual and same-sex couples. William R. Miller, Ph.D., Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Psychiatry, The University of New MexicoThis theoretically rich and research-informed volume provides practitioners with an essential toolkit of clinical principles and techniques for helping couples reach their goals and improve their relationships. Representing a breakthrough in couples treatment and a timely extension of motivational interviewing, this book is a must-read for practitioners seeking to improve their expertise working with couples at critical junctures. Taylor & Francis Ltd Reaching Out
Book SynopsisAssertive outreach is a means of helping people with serious and persistent mental health difficulties who have not engaged with conventional mental health services. Reaching Out examines the application of psychological approaches in assertive outreach a process which involves forming new relationships and offering hope to people who have been alienated from traditional methods.Reaching Out begins with a discussion of topics including: engagement the team approach assessments team case formulation managing stress and burnout for staff. The second half of the book focuses on the task of delivering psychological therapies and considers a range of models including psychodynamic therapy, family therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy and community approaches.Reaching Out: The Psychology of Assertive Outreach demonstrates that the relationship between staff and service users is essential tTrade Review"Assertive outreach services have provided an overdue milieu for the development and creative delivery of psychological approaches to meeting the needs of people who experience severe and enduring mental distress. Caroline Cupitt and her colleagues have reflected upon their extensive experience of assertive outreach to capture the broad impact of these approaches from a range of stakeholder perspectives, whilst drawing upon a spectrum of psychological/therapeutic orientations. Attention is appropriately focussed upon the influence of psychological variables during a service user's journey from engagement and formulation, through to therapy and outcome/participation.This book should be read by all assertive outreach practitioners, and by those practitioners in other settings/services who wish to use psychological ideas to inform their work with this client group." - Dr Mark Hayward, Clinical Psychologist, University of SurreyTable of ContentsCupitt, Introduction. Taylor & Francis Ltd The Psychology of Theft and Loss
Book SynopsisWhy do we steal? This question has confounded everyone from parents to judges, teachers to psychologists, economists to more than a few moral thinkers. Stealing can be a result of deprivation, of envy, or of a desire for power and influence. An act of theft can also bring forth someoneâs hidden traits â paradoxically proving beneficial to their personal development. Robert Tyminski explores the many dimensions of stealing, and in particular how they relate to a subtle balance of loss versus gain that operates in all of us. Our natural aversion to loss can lead to extreme actions as a means to acquire what we may not be able to obtain through time, work or money. Tyminski uses the myth of Jason, Medea and the Golden Fleece to explore the dilemmas involved in such situations and demonstrate the timelessness of theft as fundamentally human. The Psychology of Theft and Loss incorporates Jungian and psychoanalytic theories as well as more recent cognitive research finTrade Review"We are fortunate to have Dr. Robert Tyminski's first book. A gifted clinician, theoretician and story-teller, Dr. Tyminski holds an analytic mirror up to shadow aspects of human behavior in a way that reveals much of the deep background to such acts; it is not simply a psychology of culprits. His understanding of the potential purpose and value of theft goes beyond even Winnicott, especially when integrating an individuation perspective. The reader is challenged to a fruitful encounter with his or her own darkness by an excellent guide; a book to be re-read."—Joe Cambray, Past President of the International Association for Analytical Psychology (IAAP) and author of Synchronicity: Nature and Psyche in an Interconnected World"Perusing this insight-studded book about the many faces theft presents to clinical practice, I realized the degree to which depth psychology has ripped us all off by not dealing with this subject so fully before. It is hard not to envy Robert Tyminski—the Jason whose beautiful prose and muscular ability to do the theoretical heavy lifting combine here to gather up the well-guarded Golden Fleece. Unlike Jason, however, he remains faithful to the insistent voice of Medea in the psyche, which guides him to what our culture has avoided facing about this theme. Recognizing the importance of the robber to the child in the adult, Dr. Tyminski can tell us what is coveted later by the person who early loses access to parental love and concern. He summons an unsentimental view of stealing, one of the most resolute syndromes of the shadow, to earn his way to a compassionate understanding of the soul’s efforts to survive through theft. Tyminski demonstrates that a patient’s desire to take what has seemed to belong only to other people can be transformed into a deeper valuing of the self’s ambition to be protected from moral compromise."—John Beebe, author of Integrity in DepthTable of Contents1. Taylor & Francis Ltd First Do No Harm The Paradoxical Encounters of
Book SynopsisAt the outset of World War I - the Great War - Freud supported the Austro-Hungarian Empire for which his sons fought. But the cruel truths of that bloody conflict, wrought on the psyches as much as the bodies of the soldiers returning from the battlefield, caused him to rethink his stance and subsequently affected his theory: Psychoanalysis, a healing science, could tell us much about both the drive for war and the ways to undo the trauma that war inherently breeds, but its principles could just as easily serve the enemy's desires to inculcate its own brand of truth.Even a century later, psychoanalysis can still be used as much for the justifications of warfare and propaganda as it is for the defiance of and resistance to those same things. But it is in the investigation of the motives and methods behind these uses that psychoanalysis proves its greatest strength. To wit, this edited collection presents published and unpublished material by analysts, writers, and activists who have worked at the front lines of psychic life and war from various stances. Set at a point of tension and contradiction, they illustrate the paradoxical relation of psychoanalysis as both a site of resistance and healing and a necessary aspect of warmaking, propaganda, and militarism. In doing so, we venture from the home front - from the trauma of returning veterans to the APA's own complicity in CIA black sites - across international borders - from the treatment of women in Latin American dictatorships to the resistance to occupation in Palestine, from mind control to an ethics of responsibility. Throughout, a psychoanalytic sensibility deconstructs the very opposition that it inhabits, and seeks to reestablish psychoanalysis as the healing discipline it was conceived to be. Trade Review"Psychologists wield tremendous power, from the sanctity of the therapist's couch to the cold, hard, dark reality of the CIA's secret prisons. Facing a professional leadership embedded with the Bush administration and the Pentagon, a small group of dedicated psychologists mounted a disciplined campaign to put an end to the torture that was being conducted with the support and participation of their peers. As this volume documents, the struggle to reform the American Psychological Association is a story of grassroots organizing against tremendous institutional power, to force their profession to abide by the ancient imperative to 'first do no harm.' The courageous efforts of these psychologists, described herein along with the overarching role of psychology in war and its aftereffects, bring to mind the lines of Mario Savio, launching the Free Speech Movement at UC-Berkeley in 1964: 'There's a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious - makes you sick at heart - that you can't take part. You can't even passively take part. And you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all.'" - Amy Goodman, host and executive producer, Democracy Now!"This collection holds its own among edited volumes that address the Bush White House decision to use torture. Because of its specificity to psychology, historical scope, and utilization of contemporary psychoanalysis, it warrants a wide readership. I recommend it to anyone who takes seriously trauma as a psychological condition and the place of ethics within psychology, as well as to those with interest in contemporary psychoanalysis." - Louis Rothschild, PhD., in PsycCRITIQUESTable of ContentsBotticelli, Harris, Introduction. Jason Aronson Inc. Publishers Ethical Practice in Child and Adolescent Analysis
Book SynopsisEthical Practice in Child and Adolescent Analysis and Psychotherapy addresses core issues in ethical practice in working with children and their parents, with attention to unconscious motives and defenses that render the therapist most vulnerable to ethical lapses.Trade ReviewEthics are the fundamental principles and rules of conduct that guide our professional life and clinical practice. It is then curious that ethics are rarely fully integrated with and applied to the complexities of our daily clinical work, complexities multiplied when working with children and adolescents. The authors of Ethical Practice in Child and Adolescent Analysis and Psychotherapy: Protecting Safety in a Therapeutic Environment have taken on the task of correcting this situation. With the use of illustrative clinical vignettes that bring the topic to life, and through an understanding of the role of conscious and unconscious processes, they consider how ethical dilemmas are shaped by the therapeutic relationship, what role they play in our work with parents, in the supervisor-supervisee relationship, in forensic work, and in our professional writing and presentations. In addition, the authors outline the pertinent theoretical and clinical issues, and examine the relevant questions. Ethical Practice in Child and Adolescent Analysis and Psychotherapy is thoughtful and thought provoking, clear and concise, and recommended reading for everyone in the field. -- Jill M.
