Book SynopsisIulius Africanus (3rd cent.) is a fascinating writer in a period of transition. Widely travelled, he belongs to the intellectual élite of the second sophistic. His two main works present a similar encyclopedic approach, but very different contents. He can be considered the “father of Christian chronography”, since he authored the first Christian world chronicle (Chronographiae). However, he also wrote a comprehensive and multifaceted manual of many fields of knowledge, where the religious character is open to debate. The preserved fragments of the Cesti treat military, technical, medical and many other topics. These texts are presented in an entirely new critical edition. The transmission of the texts as well as questions of authenticity are highly complex. Compared to the previous edition (Vieillefond 1970), considerable progress has been reached in terms of both, quantity and quality of the material. Hitherto unknown texts have been included, and in the case of dubious authorship all necessary information is provided for a realistic picture of the transmission. In the introduction, all relevant channels of transmission are discussed. The edition is accompanied by notes and a new English translation.

Das trifft selbstverständlich auf die beigezogene, entsprechend weit zurückliegende Fachliteratur zu, zeigt sich aber auch an der theologischen Prägung durch die dialektische Theologie und den Kampf der Bekennenden Kirche.Gleichwohl darf das Buch über seinen Materialreichtum hinaus als ein in seinen Grundzügen bahnbrechendes Werk der Luther-Forschung gelten. Die von Karl Holl in der Preußischen Akademie der Wissenschaften 1920 vorgetragene Abhandlung über "Luthers Bedeutung für den Fortschritt der Auslegungskunst" wurde hier in eigenständiger Weise aufgegriffen und weitergeführt, nun konzentriert auf die bis dahin wenig ausgeschöpfte, vornehmlich in Predigten überlieferte Evangelienauslegung. Das liegt unter anderem auch daran, dass Luthers historische Voraussetzungen bislang nicht hinreichend untersucht wurden. Volker Mantey schließt diese Lücke, indem er sich der spätmittelalterlichen Traditionsgeschichte der Zwei-Reiche-Lehre Luthers widmet. Dies geschieht anhand einer Analyse der Zwei-Schwerter-Lehre ab 1300, wie sie für das Verhältnis von Staat und Kirche maßgeblich war. Sie wurde sowohl verwendet, um den päpstlichen Anspruch auf weltliche Oberhoheit zu untermauern, als auch, um sich gegen den Papst abzugrenzen und eine weltliche Eigenständigkeit zu behaupten.Der Autor stellt Luthers Zwei-Reiche-Lehre vor ihrem spätmittelalterlichen Horizont dar. Dabei zeigt sich, in welchem Verhältnis der Reformator sich theologisch zwischen Thomas von Aquin und Wilhelm von Ockham positioniert.

Book SynopsisIn den für die Entwicklung der evangelischen Kirchen entscheidenden Jahren nach Luthers Tod nahm Johannes Brenz (1499-1570) eine Schlüsselposition ein. Matthias A. Deuschle geht erstmals der Frage nach, welche Theologie Brenz in jenen Jahren vertrat und welche Motive sein Denken und Handeln prägten. Als Hauptquelle dient das umfangreichste dogmatische Werk des schwäbischen Reformators: Die Apologie der Confessio Virtembergica. Sie verteidigt die reformatorische Lehre gegen Angriffe des Dillinger Professors und ehemaligen Beichtvaters Karls V. Pedro de Soto (1495/1500-1563). Die Analyse der bisher nie eingehend untersuchten Schrift nach Entstehung, Inhalt und den auf sie bezogenen Auseinandersetzungen zeigt, daß das Brenzsche Denken auch noch zu jener Zeit, als andernorts die innerevangelischen Streitigkeiten im Vordergrund standen, hauptsächlich von der Auseinandersetzung mit Rom bestimmt war. Es zeigt sich, daß Brenz den Widerspruch gegen die römische Lehre zunehmend auf die Frage nach den - von ihm so genannten - Prinzipien des christlichen Glaubens konzentriert und so erste Schritte auf dem Weg zu einer evangelischen Prinzipienlehre geht. In diesem Zusammenhang erhalten die Schriftlehre, die Ekklesiologie und die Rechtfertigungslehre eine grundlegende Funktion. Ihre Entfaltung steht infolgedessen im Zentrum der Darstellung. Die Ergebnisse der Untersuchung werden sowohl in die Entwicklung des Brenzschen Denkens als auch in den größeren theologie- und kirchengeschichtlichen Kontext eingeordnet.Das Buch wurde mit dem Johannes-Brenz-Preis 2006 des Vereines für württembergische Kirchengeschichte ausgezeichnet.

Book SynopsisDie wissenschaftliche Diskussion um die Entstehung von Weihnachten und Epiphanias kreist meist um zwei Entstehungshypothesen: Vor allem im angelsächsischen Sprachraum wird in der theologischen Literatur ein innerchristlicher Entstehungszusammenhang aufgrund von frühchristlichen Berechnungen favorisiert, während sonst meist auf parallele heidnische Feiern als Anlaß für die Entstehung der beiden Feste verwiesen wird. Eine derartige Parallelbildung eines christlichen Festes am Termin eines beliebten heidnischen Festes würde, so die weit verbreitete Ansicht, den heutigen Kenntnissen über die Inkulturation des Christentums entsprechen. Hans Förster zeigt, daß beide Hypothesen für die Entstehung von Weihnachten und Epiphanias die Situation des vierten Jahrhunderts nicht erklären können. Die Sonnensymbolik hat sicherlich zur Wahl des Festtermins entscheidend beigetragen. Sie konnte dies jedoch gerade deswegen, weil es eben kein paralleles römisches Sonnwendfest gab, das sich im vierten Jahrhundert besonderer Beliebtheit erfreut hätte. Das angeblich weit verbreitete und beliebte "Sol-Invictus-Fest" wurde vielmehr aufgrund einer höchst fragwürdigen Interpretation christlicher Quellen konstruiert; eine genaue Lektüre dieser Quellen vermag jedoch zu zeigen, daß es dieses Fest wahrscheinlich nicht gab, zumindest hat es sich um kein verbreitetes oder beliebtes Fest gehandelt. Dies bedeutet eine entscheidende Akzentverschiebung der gängigen Sicht des Christentums im vierten Jahrhundert.

Durch die Berücksichtigung verschiedenster Schriften und aufgrund des konsequent chronologischen Vorgehens lassen sich im führungsbezogenen Denken und Handeln Gregors sowohl Entwicklungen als auch Divergenzen feststellen. Der umfassende Zugang durchbricht die in der Gregor-Forschung verbreitete Tendenz, das Denken und das kirchenpolitische Handeln Gregors je gesondert voneinander zu beleuchten.Die Studie geht auch auf bislang wenig Beachtetes ein, wie beispielsweise Gregors Andreaskloster in Rom, das als ein Hort der kirchlichen Reform identifiziert wird, oder seine östliche Prägung aufgrund seines langjährigen Aufenthaltes in Konstantinopel. Book SynopsisWhy do humans congregate in groups defined by distinct cultural styles? This book seeks to answer this question through a simple yet ambitious hypothesis. It explains the emergence and persistence of social groups as dependent upon the existence of cultural immune systems that regulate both internal and external flows of information. Based on a model of the human mind as a host of cognitive systems aimed to predict the world through probabilistic models, Sørensen argues that as humans congregate in groups, we gradually align these models forming distinct social and cognitive niches. This not only enhances our ability to predict the mind and behavior of others thereby easing in-group coordination; as shared cultural models stabilize internal cognitive processing, we become self-predictive thereby paving the way for the emergence of a more stable sense of self. Further, prompted by our predictive minds, cultural models form more coherent cultural systems that regulate which new ideas are accepted and which are rejected. Identifying particular cultural immune systems, notably ritual, law, and education, Sørensen argues that these actively align participants with the predominant cultural style of a social group, and regulate interaction at different levels of social complexity.
