Edition Peters Petite Messe Solennelle Vocal Score
Book SynopsisRossini never distinguished himself by composing sacred works. But the Petite Messe Solenelle represents his last major sacred work after Rossini''s retirement from the opera. The original instrumentation consists of only two pianos and a harmonium, as the work had its premiere in Count Pillet-Will''s house chapel. Nowadays the second piano part is integrated into the first, including in this edition.

Edition Peters Messe solennelle St Cecilia Mass Vocal Score
Book SynopsisThe appearance of the Messe Saint-Cécile caused a kind of shock. This simplicity, this grandeur, this serene light which rose before the musical world like a breaking dawn, troubled people enormously. . . . at first one was dazzled, then charmed, then conquered. So wrote Camille Saint-Saëns after hearing the premiere of Gounod''s ''Messe solennelle en l''honneur de Sainte-Cécile'' on St Cecilia''s day, 22 November 1855. Classic Edition Peters Vocal Score edited by Roland Erben. Contains a piano reduction of the orchestral accompaniment.Messe solennelle St Cecilia MassDie Messe solennelle en lhonneur de Saint-Cécile ist eine der wenigen Orchestermessen Gounods. Edition Peters Gloria in D RV 589 Vocal Score
Book SynopsisVivaldi''s international renown came about largely as a result of his concertos, which were collated, and, of course performed, throughout the courts of Europe. Quite unlike the concertos, Vivaldi''s voluminous output of sacred works was hardly known beyond the purlieus of their original performance. Following the composer''s death they became increasingly unknown and even today it is difficult to say how many pieces of church music Vivaldi composed. As few of Vivaldi's church compositions can be dated on the basis of written or stylistic evidence, the origins of the Gloria In D remain shrouded with conjecture.Rather than being conceived aspart of a larger Mass setting, the Gloria is an independent work, a cyclical composition of broad design consisting of twelve self-contained movements. Stylistically, it closely resembles a concertante Mass. This Urtext edition of Vivaldi's ever-popular work provides you with an accurate realisation of the composer's original in

Book SynopsisThe words for this piece were taken from two French poems: LHeure du Berger, by Paul Verlaine, and Le Lac by the ultra-Romantic Alphonse de Lamartine. It was important for me to think of the age gap between myself and the girls of La Matrise de Radio France, who commissioned the piece roughly fifty years! The poet(s) describes a beautiful, memorable night, and tries to convince Time to slow down: Let us savour the fleeting delights of our fairest days! But the boat continues under a red moon, and the water lilies close their petals. There are three movements, and the third has an extended ending on the words eternity and nothingness.Judith Bingham

Edition Peters The Pearl
Book SynopsisWhen I was approached by Salisbury Cathedral to write a 30th anniversary anthem for their Girl Choristers, I immediately thought of the traditional 30th wedding anniversary symbol a pearl. When George Herbert was also requested, it was incredible serendipity that he had actually written a poem of that title: The Pearl. Matthew 13:45. This was inspired by the very short parable which compares the immense value of the Kingdom of Heaven to the most exquisite pearl a merchant could sell: a merchant seeking goodly pearls, on finding one of great price, went and sold all that he had and bought it. Herbert expands all that he had to include things of worldly worth such as learning, honour and pleasure, but concludes that there is an immeasurably greater and more priceless gift: the costly love of Christ which is the Kingdom of Heaven.I worried that a poem claiming knowledge of some quite grown-up things might not be suitable for the girls, but their luminescent ageless sound and the

Book SynopsisPraise Him with the Sound of the Trumpet was commissioned by Alan and Victoria Young to celebrate the eighteenth birthday of their daughter, Kate, to whom the anthem is dedicated. The first performance was given by the Choir of Guildford Cathedral, in which Kate had been a chorister for some time. Kate's great love of music guided the composer's choice of text: Psalm 150 is one of the shortest of all the psalms, but has the longest list of musical instruments trumpet, timbrel and dance, stringed instruments and organs, the psaltery and harp, loud and high-sounding cymbals all inviting jubilant musical illustration.

Edition Peters Sing Joyfully
Book SynopsisThe title Sing Joyfully was actually suggested to me by one of its commissioners from the Saffron Walden Choral Society, as a working title for a piece of music that would eventually explore the pleasure to be derived from singing. The title immediately brought to mind the anthem by William Byrd, with which I then chose to begin this new piece, divesting the work of its religious nature by omitting parts of the text.I decided, inspired by the nature of the commission, to collect some texts that specifically describe singing communally and what benefits this holds for the individual and for society as a whole. A passage from Thomas Morley's Plaine and Easy Introduction to Practical Music describes the narrator's discomfort at being unable to join his fellow guests in some convivial communal singing. This then leads into words from a research paper published in the journal Royal Society Open Science by Eiluned Pearce, Jacques Launay and Robin Dunbar that detail

Edition Peters Elemental Powers
Book SynopsisWhen Dr Bernie Sherlock approached me to commission a setting of W B Yeats poem for New Dublin Voices, I'm ashamed to say that I wasn't familiar with his work But it gave me a fantastic opportunity to read through his Collected poems so many jumped out at me, begging to be set.The Poet Pleads with the Elemental Powers chimed with me especially the desperation of having to draw so profoundly deeply for nebulous creative inspiration then being swept away with it once it arrives, chimed with the passionate turbulence and Celtic mysticism in this poem. The direction for the performers, from the start is Stormy the elemental powers are relentless and create a constant chromatic swirling accompaniment in one half of the choir, whilst the other half describe the form that the Elemental Powers take. The last verse feels like a prayer of sorts to me, so this is a quieter, more reflective and hymn-like part. However the final chord is strong but unsettled in its harmony, as

Edition Peters Jubilate Deo
Book SynopsisThis setting was commissioned early in 2023 for the Choir of the Chapels Royal, H.M. Tower of London, as part of a service celebrating the Coronation of H.M. King Charles III. It was first performed by the Choir of the Chapels Royal conducted by its Director of Music, Colm Carey, with Christian Wilson, organist. On the day following the Coronation, the filmed service was broadcast online throughout the Commonwealth. My brief was to create something which, while outgoing and energetic, could be prepared by a professional choir in relatively short rehearsal time, therefore lending itself to regular subsequent performance at Matins services. The music offsets its simple 3/4 time signature with intermittent dancing cross-rhythms in 6/8. In the interests of brevity, most of it is chorally homophonic, moving verbally and rhythmically in lockstep and only occasionally diversifying into brief flurries of imitative counterpoint. I was, however, encouraged by Colm Carey to write with an

Edition Peters Exceeding glad
Book SynopsisExceeding Glad was commissioned explicitly to reflect my personal experience of the Coronation of King Charles III in May 2023. I was extremely fortunate in being asked to perform at the event as well as to contribute some music. In the week leading up to Coronation Day, I was staying in the Westminster area, close to the Abbey, and was able to soak up the extraordinary, almost unreal atmosphere. It was in marked contrast to the air of dignified solemnity that had accompanied the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II the previous year; the Coronation was to be a celebration on a grand scale and spirits were high.King Charles took a personal, close interest in the music for the whole occasion and commentators noted the breadth and diversity of his choice. The Ascension Gospel Choir made a memorable contribution to the service and certainly added to the joy of the occasion. This sense of joy was present in the noise and brilliance of the amalgamated musicians that day,

Edition Peters Inviolata after Lusitano
Book SynopsisInviolata is an act of homage set on top of another act of homage. When the motet by Josquin des Pres (c. 1450 - 1521) first appeared in print around 1519, he set the bar high for all composers (and there were several) who followed in his wake. His five-part polyphonic decoration of the Inviolata, integra et casta es Maria plainsong is in three sections and includes a double, canonic cantus firmus running throughout at the fifth. This demonstration of technical expertise feels effortless in Josquin's hands. Vicente Lusitano (c. 1520 - 1561), a Portuguese composer possibly of African descent, took up the challenge and more; he decided to retain the double canon but add extra voices to create his an eight-part texture. Lusitano's neglected place in history has garnered a lot of interest recently and Rory McCleery with the Marion Consort have been powerful advocates for his music.Rory invited me to compose my own response to Lusitano's Inviolata setting. I would be adding a third layer on top of Josquin's original, as seen through Lusitano's eyes and then my own. While I did consider constructing my own eight-part polyphonic texture in kind, I acknowledge that I am no Josquin! Besides which, the harmonic rules that governed Josquin and Lusitano barely apply in my century which makes the exercise largely redundant. This is something I explore a little by adding my own musica ficta (modern-day accidentals) to Part One of Lusitano's original, before my 21st century harmony takes the music in a different direction. Instead, thanks to a suggestion from my older brother (who happens to be an expert practitioner of Medieval and early Renaissance polyphony), I thought to go back a stage further even than Josquin's setting and consider the plainsong itself. This was the original melody and text that inspired the whole chain of compositions and I wondered whether it could be my basis for an exploration of plainsong, homophony, organum and polyphony, a sort of mini-history lesson in music.Added to this commission was the circumstances of its premiere as a recording. It was devised for a project in which each individual consort voice was recorded separately in order to be played from an individual speaker. The resulting sound installation was arranged in an otherwise empty room, giving an audient member complete freedom to roam and experience the voices individually at point-blank range or together as part of the full consort. This gave me an opportunity to play with sound and space, having singers at times whisper text into one's ear, as though hearing scraps in the darkness of an abbey cloister. Mixing English with Latin also allowed me to explore the passionate emotion of this Marian text and the extraordinary position Mary holds within the Catholic faith. What Josquin or Lusitano might make of it we shall never know but the homage to their versions is present within my own.Roderick Williams
