Bach vertonte in der Matthäus-Passion Leiden und Sterben Jesu Christi nach Texten des Matthäus-Evangeliums. Bach sah eigentlich in der Aufführung zwei räumlich voneinander getrennte Chöre vor, damit die dialogischen Strukturen besser hervortreten.
