Rossini never distinguished himself by composing sacred works. But the Petite Messe Solenelle represents his last major sacred work after Rossini''s retirement from the opera. The original instrumentation consists of only two pianos and a harmonium, as the work had its premiere in Count Pillet-Will''s house chapel. Nowadays the second piano part is integrated into the first, including in this edition.

Durch die Komposition geistlicher Werke ist Rossini nie hervorgetreten. Doch die Petite Messe Solenelle stellt nach Rossinis Rückzug aus der Oper sein letztes großes geistliches Werk dar. Die Originalbesetzung besteht nur aus zwei Klavieren und einem Harmonium, denn das Werk hatte seine Uraufführung in der Hauskapelle des Grafen Pillet-Will. Die zweite Klavierstimme wird heutzutage in die erste integriert, so auch in dieser Ausgabe.
