Book SynopsisAs a child in South Korea, Ban Ki-moon wrote a letter to the U.N. secretary-general regarding the Hungarian uprising against Russia. A few years later in the United States, he met President John F. Kennedy. From then on, Ban desired to work for peace, an aspiration that led him to become South Korea's foreign minister in 2004, at a time when tensions between North Korea and its neighbors were heated. Two years later, he ascended to the position of U.N. secretary-general. Ban has worked to show the benefits of diplomatic approaches in solving conflict, and has called for the world's citizens to change their habits to curb global warming. To restore people's trust in the battered organization, he has set standards for other U.N. staff. In ""Ban Ki-moon"", read how his further success in these areas will attempt to keep the U.N. relevant in an increasingly complex world.

Book SynopsisDo you have a bunch of ideas for super-cute clothes but can’t find them when you’re out shopping? This book will teach you how to make anything you can dream up! Dresses? Yes. Jeggings? Check. Put your own stamp on everything you create by first sketching your designs in the book. You’ll learn how to make fashion design mood boards, using things that you love and that inspire you. You’ll be designing and sewing purses, headbands, skirts, and tops in no time! Now you won’t even need to leave the house to find your favorite outfit!Trade ReviewApril 2015 In another review I mentioned how I learned to sew as a child with help from a book called My Big Book of Sewing. This taught me the basics and showed me that sewing was fun, and a good opportunity for using imagination as well as producing something useful or amusing. It was rather thin on fashion however, unlike this inspiring book on how girls can make their own clothes. Most sewing books start with what you need, show you how to use it and then give you some projects to make to get you started. This is fine for adults, but younger people need a bit more to get encouraged. You can find all that here, from lively colorful layouts to the voice of the author, talking to the book’s owner like a friend. Get started by choosing a box for your supplies and decorating it, before learning what you need to put in it. Learn the parts of a sewing machine and what they all do, create a sewing space and a mood board. I love the way all this takes place first but not in a boring way as there are practical things to do such as the mood board and drawing fashion designs, and none of it takes too long to read. A fair but of knowledge is encapsulated in an admirably short section with plenty of pictures and things to try out. The projects themselves are grouped into sections such as back to school, friends, slumber party, summertime and party wear. Each section has four things to make or customizations for existing items. A project has a full page photo of the garment, plus a list of what you need, how to make it and tips to make it all go successfully. All the garments and accessories are designed to be fun to make and wear, and making them will teach a novice sewer how to do most of the basics. If this sounds boring this also includes the fun part, meaning embellishment and plenty of it. In short, this is a wonderfully produced book that is sure to appeal to any girl who wants to learn how to make their own clothes. * Myshelf.com *July 2015 This book is aimed at girls aged 7-14 and is the kind of book I would have loved as a child. From creating mood boards, to designing and making your own garments and accessories , author Rachel Low encourages girls to create, have fun and feel good about what they can make. It is filled with brilliant ideas and tips that will give them confidence and help them to find their own style. With full-sized patterns in the back, this book is written simply in language that girls will understand. * Love to Make *Table of ContentsIntroduction [Chapter Title] Note for girls and parents What the girls say - students quotes Affirmations Things to Know [Section Opener] Essential Tools [Chapter Title] Tools/Supplies [Head 1] Using the Iron [Head 2] How to Pin [Head 2] Sewing Machine Basics [Head 1] The Parts [Head 2] How to use it [Head 2] Hand Sewing [Sidebar] Your Sewing Space [Head 1] How to Use This Book [Chapter Title] Finding Your Creative Style [Head 1] What Inspires You [Head 2] What do you love - Let's Doodle [Head 2] Mood Boards - How-to/room to create your own [Head 2] How the projects are organized - the process is broken down [Head 1] How to Use Patterns [Head 1] Ready to Create! • Break These Rules: 35 YA Authors on Speaking Up,

Chicago Review Press Break These Rules: 35 YA Authors on Speaking Up,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIf you’re a girl, you should strive to look like the model on the cover of a magazine. If you’re a boy, you should play sports and be good at them. If you’re smart, you should immediately go to college after high school, and get a job that makes you rich. Above all, be normal.Right? Wrong, say 35 leading middle grade and young adult authors. Growing up is challenging enough; it doesn’t have to be complicated by convoluted, outdated, or even cruel rules, both spoken and unspoken. Parents, peers, teachers, the media, and the rest of society sometimes have impossible expectations of teenagers. These restrictions can limit creativity, break spirits, and demand that teens sacrifice personality for popularity. In these personal, funny, moving, and poignant essays, Kathryn Erskine (Mockingbird), Matthew Quick (The Silver Linings Playbook), Gary D. Schmidt (The Wednesday Wars), Sara Zarr (Story of a Girl), and many others share anecdotes and lessons learned from their own lives in order to show you that some rules just beg to be broken.Trade Review"This book actually breaks the rules just by existing. This much sheer coolness should not be allowed in one volume!" -- Jordan Sonnenblick, bestselling author, Drums, Girls & Dangerous Pie"These wonderful essays not only lay out good reasons for breaking rules, but they also provide lots of room for thought. If I could make one rule, it would be for every teen, parent, and teacher to read this collection. We'd all be better for it." -- Kathi Appelt, author of the Newberry Honor-winning The Underneath"Much of the advice -- from rejecting conventional standards of beauty to not worrying about fitting in -- may be familiar to many readers, though that doesn't make it any less sound. In the strongest entries, the writers use examples of their own past struggles to subtly drive home their messages." -- Publishers Weekly"Each contributor shares personal experience and advice, which makes for good, varied reading that will surely offer something unique for many readers. The essays are inspiring and thought-provoking, and many offer truly funny moments. Reynolds provides an excellent flow between essays" and "As readers head back to the classrooms this fall, these essays can serve as discussion starters and give readers a jumping-off point for thinking about the bigger picture and life after high school." -- School Library Journal"While each contribution is deeply heartfelt, the shining stars of the collection are those that elegantly guide the reader with authentic, personal specifics on journeys that are genuinely transformative." -- Booklist"This book is a hall pass to individuality, out-of-the-box thinking and self-expression. LOVE. IT." -- Justine

Book SynopsisA Washington Post Best Children’s Book of 2018 Who’s Crazy? What does it mean to be crazy? Is using the word crazy offensive? What happens when a label like that gets attached to your everyday experiences? To understand mental health, we need to talk openly about it. Because there’s no single definition of crazy, there’s no single experience that embodies it, and the word itself means different things—wild? extreme? disturbed? passionate?—to different people. In (Don’t) Call Me Crazy, thirty-three actors, athletes, writers, and artists offer essays, lists, comics, and illustrations that explore a wide range of topics: their personal experiences with mental illness, how we do and don’t talk about mental health, help for better understanding how every person’s brain is wired differently, and what, exactly, might make someone crazy. If you’ve ever struggled with your mental health, or know someone who has, come on in, turn the pages . . . and let’s get talking. This award-winning anthology is from the highly-praised editor of Here We Are: Feminism for the Real World and Body Talk: 37 Voices Explore Our Radical Anatomy. .Trade ReviewA Washington Post Best Children’s Book of 2018 “Jensen has brought together sharp and vivid perspectives concerning mental-health challenges. To rescue the missing children and clear her own name, Corinne goes deep into the ocean to find Mama D’Leau, the dangerous jumbie who rules the sea. But Mama D’Leau’s help comes with a price. Corinne and her friends Dru, Bouki, and Malik must travel with mermaids across the ocean to fetch a powerful object for Mama D’Leau. The only thing more perilous than Corinne’s adventures across the sea is the jumbie that waits for her back home. With action-packed storytelling and inventive twists on Caribbean and West African mythology and fairy tales, Rise of the Jumbies is a breathlessly exciting tale of courage and friendship. An NPR Best Book of 2017 A Kirkus Reviews Best Book of 2017 A School Library Journal Best Book of 2017Trade Review“The novelty of the fantasy elements, the complex characters, and the superb world-building combine in a tale well worth reading, both as a sequel and a stand-alone. A stellar recommendation for fans of edgy fantasy such as Aaron Starmer’s The Riverman Trilogy or Adam Gidwitz’s A Tale Dark and Grimm series, and, of course, fans of the first book.” —School Library Journal, starred review “Baptiste's colorful, rich Caribbean characters return triumphantly in this sequel, and the mythos of the island continues to expand. Baptiste deepens what could be a light and charming undersea adventure with ties to African religions and the historical legacy of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. As other young children of the African diaspora sort out their feelings about and relationships with slavery, so do Corinne and her loyal friends. While other tales may address it with a casual aside or scrub out the grimiest bits, leaving history in a shiny, tidy package removed from reality, Baptiste allows her characters to find and create ways to grapple with uncomfortable truths. A stirring and mystical tale sure to keep readers thinking past the final page.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review “Rise of the Jumbies is a captivating tale that hooks readers from the onset and doesn’t let go. The imagery is crisp and nuanced, the leading characters are gutsy yet kindhearted, and the villains are just the right amount of wicked for middle schoolers . . . If you’re looking for a story that’s original, action packed and inspiring, look no further than Rise of the Jumbies.” —BookPage “Young readers are probably familiar with Greek myths, thanks to Rick Riordan, and other enduring European classics, so this series with twists on Caribbean (particularly Haitian and Trinidadian) and West African tales is a welcome change.” —Booklist “This highly enjoyable story captures the culture and the atmosphere of the small island community with beautiful descriptions and natural, flowing dialogue . . . a welcome addition to the juvenile menagerie of mythological creatures.” —Foreword Reviews “Thrilling.” —Bookish “Kids who can’t get enough of legends or fantastical stories will be wide eyed at both story and action, the latter of which is truly heart-pounding . . . Savvy readers ages 8-12 may be able to jump into Rise of The Jumbies feet first without reading its predecessor, The Jumbies, but I’d recommend starting there anyhow. Try that, and your child can wave ‘hello’ to her next favorite series.” —Guam Daily Post “Read this book for the flavorful Caribbean setting. Read it for the fantastic mythology. Read it to meet one very brave girl. Read it if you like the thrill of a good scare. Read it to discover more about a shameful past hidden in the depths of the sea. That's a tall order for one middle grade book, but Baptiste delivers on all counts.” —Reading Style Guide “With an action-packed story, diverse characters, Rise of the Jumbies is an inventive twist on Caribbean and West African tales. This is a great book for summer reading that your middle schoolers will enjoy.”—Successful Black Parenting “You can't go wrong with a fairy tale, and this Caribbean fairy tale is exciting. . . This story is well written, and the pace is just fast enough. I liked that it kept me guessing and that there were larger themes woven into the plot like slavery, chosen family vs. the family you are born with, and what happens when fear and hatred take root in people. ” —GeekReadsKids.com “The novelty of the fantasy elements, the complex characters, and the superb world-building combine in a tale well worth reading, both as a sequel and a stand-alone. Book SynopsisThe brand-new deluxe hardcover collector's edition of Sheets features never-before-seen content from the beloved graphic novel from Brenna Thummler. Selected as a Barnes & Noble Best Book of 2018, Sheets comes in an all-new package featuring brand-new cover art, behind-the-scenes content, a new introduction from Phoebe and Her Unicorn's Dana Simpson, and a mini-comic, "A Sheets Story." Fans old and new will love this gorgeous, ghostly story in a beautiful new hardcover package. "Brenna Thummler's first original graphic novel is a reason to celebrate. She announced herself as an artist to reckon with when she illustrated Mariah Marsden's adaptation of Anne of Green Gables. Now she's illustrated her own story of ghosts and family, loneliness and laundromats. I'm sure you'll be captivated, and as eager as I am to see what comes next!"—Brian Selznick, author of Wonderstruck and The Invention of Hugo Cabret For Marjorie Glatt, being thirteen years old isn't quite the same as it is for everyone else. Responsible for running her family's laundromat while trying to survive middle school, Marjorie's daily struggles include persnickety customers, snippy classmates, agonizing swim lessons, and laundry... always, always laundry. Wendell is a bit different, too. Wendell is a ghost. His daily struggles include Dead Youth support groups and unavoidable stains. But when he escapes from the Land of Ghosts and bumbles into Marjorie's laundromat--the perfect ghost playground--his attempts at fun and friendship begin to harm the family business. Sheets is a powerful story about a young girl's perseverance, even when all the odds are stacked against her. It shows that forgiveness and second chances can result in unlikely friendships. Above all, it is an invitation into an unusual, haunted laundromat that brings family, friends, and--yes--sheets to life.
