Child and developmental psychology Books
Little, Brown & Company The Marshmallow Test
Book Synopsis Renowned psychologist Walter Mischel, designer of the famous Marshmallow Test, explains what self-control is and how to master it. A child is presented with a marshmallow and given a choice: Eat this one now, or wait and enjoy two later. What will she do? And what are the implications for her behavior later in life? The world''s leading expert on self-control, Walter Mischel has proven that the ability to delay gratification is critical for a successful life, predicting higher SAT scores, better social and cognitive functioning, a healthier lifestyle and a greater sense of self-worth. But is willpower prewired, or can it be taught? In The Marshmallow Test, Mischel explains how self-control can be mastered and applied to challenges in everyday life -- from weight control to quitting smoking, overcoming heartbreak, making major decisions, and planning for retirement. With profound implications for the choices we make in parenting, education, public policy and self-care, The Marshmallow Test will change the way you think about who we are and what we can be.

Random House USA Inc Growing Young
Book SynopsisNATIONAL BESTSELLERA smart, research-driven case for why optimism, kindness, and strong social networks will help us live to 100.From the day her daughter was born, science journalist Marta Zaraska fretted about what she and her family were eating. She fasted, considered adopting the keto diet, and ran a half-marathon. She bought goji berries and chia seeds and ate organic food. But then her research brought her to read countless scientific papers and to interview dozens of experts in various fields of study, including molecular biochemistry, epidemiology and neuroscience. What Marta discovered shattered her long-held beliefs about aging and longevity. A strong support network of family and friends, she learned, lowers mortality risk by about 45 percent, while exercise only lowers it by about 23 percent. Volunteering your free time lowers it by 22 percent or so, while certain health fads like turmeric haven't been shown to help at all. These revelations led Marta Zaraska to a simple conclusion: In addition to healthy nutrition and physical activity, deepening friendships, practicing empathy and contemplating your purpose in life can improve your lifespan. Through eleven chapters that take her around the world, from catching wild mice in the woods of central England to flower arranging with octogenarians in Japan, from laboratories to hugging centres, Marta embarks on an absorbing, entertaining and insightful journey to determine the habits that will have the greatest impact on our longevity. Deeply researched and expertly reported, Growing Young will dramatically change the way you seek a longer, happier life.

Book SynopsisA provocative, science-based approach to parenting centered on a child’s unique genetic “code,” from an award-winning developmental psychology professor and researcher. With few exceptions, parenting books, websites, and podcasts emphasize the critical role of the parent in shaping a child’s destiny. But the obsession with parenting ignores a fundamental biological fact: that genetics affect every aspect of human behavior, and every child is uniquely “coded” with predispositions that affect everything from fearfulness, to impulsivity, to happiness. In The Child Code, award-winning professor Dr. Danielle Dick draws from her research in developmental behavior genetics to debunk the myth that parenting techniques alone can determine a child’s behavior and future. Not Stated Why We Act Turning Bystanders into Moral Rebels
Book SynopsisNow and then, we hear about everyday heroes riding to the rescue when they see someone suffering or being harassed. But most bystanders don’t intervene. Catherine Sanderson turns to cutting-edge research in social psychology and neuroscience to explain why we so often fail to act and offers practical strategies to nudge us into being moral rebels.Trade ReviewFrom bullying on the playground to sexual harassment in the workplace, perfectly nice people often do perfectly awful things. But why? In this thoughtful and beautifully written book, Sanderson shows how basic principles of social psychology explain such behavior—and how they can be used to change it. A smart and practical guide to becoming a better and braver version of ourselves. -- Daniel Gilbert, author of Stumbling on HappinessMakes a powerful argument for building, as early as possible, the ability to stand up for what's right in the face of peer pressure, corrupt authority, and even family apathy. Citing case after case revealing how easy it is for people’s moral instincts to be muted, and detailing how that silence is visible on brain scans, Sanderson guides readers toward her inevitable conclusion: We can do better, we know how, and the tipping point to convert a virtue-challenged culture into a virtuous one is closer than we think. * Psychology Today *Catherine Sanderson, like no other psychologist, invades our minds. Her riveting storytelling challenges us to rethink why we avert our eyes to evil, tolerate bullying, and excuse unforgivable workplace behavior. She plumbs the depths of social norms that too often prevent good people from being good and points to steps all of us can take to become ‘moral rebels’ whose voices can change society for the better. -- Walter V. Robinson, former editor of the Boston Globe’s Spotlight TeamSanderson’s discussion of the consequences of failing to exhibit moral courage felt ripped from 2020 headlines—all of them. It informed my thinking and conversations with everyone…It encouraged me to persevere through many moments when it felt far easier to stop trying. -- Christy E. Lopez * Washington Post *Provides lessons from neuroscience to explain how some simple strategies can help us fight the pressure to conform and develop moral courage. * Notre Dame Deloitte Center for Ethical Leadership *Challenges readers to become moral rebels, foster empathy, and practice supporting others to do the same…The genius of Sanderson's text lies in offering a recognizable picture of moral compromise and an accessible account of steps to counteract it, a recipe for change that offers hope. * Choice *Much of what enables evil people to do evil things is that we stand idly by and let them. In this powerful, well-written book, Catherine Sanderson explains what psychology has taught us about why good people so often do nothing and offers wise suggestions that will enable more of us to step up and be ‘moral rebels’ when the situation calls for it. If you have ever regretted being silent (and who hasn’t?) this is the book for you. -- Barry Schwartz, author of The Paradox of ChoiceIn an age of government misconduct, corporate malfeasance, and #MeToo, it’s tempting to believe that bad things happen because of bad actors. But as Catherine Sanderson compellingly illustrates, these events aren’t just due to ‘a few bad apples’—they are enabled and sustained by good people who are complicit in behavior they know to be wrong. This book is a must-read for anyone who wants to understand why we can become silent bystanders to unconscionable actions—and what we can do to empower ourselves and others to speak out. -- Asha Rangappa, national security analyst for CNN and former FBI agentAs unwilling witnesses to injustice, many of us have asked ourselves, ‘Why doesn’t someone do something?’ Catherine Sanderson answers this question of conscience in her powerfully persuasive book. This brilliant work stands at the intersection of social justice and social psychology. Using insights from academia, the torture chambers of Abu Ghraib, and crime scenes of police brutality, Sanderson analyzes the powerful forces that drive human beings to act against cruelty, injustice, and human suffering. The unrelenting rigor of her analysis, sweeping breadth of research, and evocative lucidity empower us to act—and also give us hope. This book comes not a moral moment too soon. -- Cornell William Brooks, Professor of the Practice of Public Leadership and Social Justice, Harvard Kennedy School, and former President of the NAACPI tend to assume that all that can be said about human nature was said by Aristotle. Catherine Sanderson has challenged my prejudice with this lively and engaging book full of interesting observations about human beings and their actions. Or has she ‘merely’ updated Aristotle through the lens of modern social psychology? If so, that’s a worthy achievement. -- William Kristol, Director of Defending Democracy TogetherWhy do so many people stand silent when someone does something bad? If you find yourself increasingly asking that question these days, you’re not alone—and Catherine Sanderson has written the book for you. Why We Act reviews the social psychological literature—from Milgram’s shocking findings onward—to explain why people who know better sometimes give wrongdoing a pass, and applies the field’s findings to everyday life, like bullying in schools, fraud and harassment in the workplace, and our current political life. A clear and engaging writer, Sanderson offers sound advice on how we can become better at doing what we know is right. -- George Conway, cofounder of The Lincoln ProjectBad things don’t happen only because of bad actors. They happen because good people choose to look the other way. In lucid prose, Sanderson explores why many avert their eyes in the face of immoral behavior, and offers strategies to help combat this pernicious tendency. Why We Act is an essential read for building a kinder and more ethical society. -- David DeSteno, Professor of Psychology, Northeastern University, and author of Emotional SuccessOur world is filled with evidence of cowardice and corruption. Catherine Sanderson explains why, drawing on decades of groundbreaking research. Why We Act offers powerful advice about how each of us can protect our integrity and improve our institutions. This is an urgent and compelling book with a clear agenda for concerned citizens. -- Jeremi Suri, author of The Impossible Presidency: The Rise and Fall of America’s Highest OfficeIn this deeply researched, compulsively readable account, Sanderson offers a thoroughly persuasive analysis of why most people remain silent in situations where they—and we—know full well that their actions could prevent harm. More importantly, she provides a highly practical toolkit for cultivating empathy and learning to be a ‘moral rebel.’ A profound and timely contribution to the psychology of compassionate moral action in a heartless world. -- R. Marie Griffith, Director of the John C. Danforth Center on Religion and Politics, Washington University in St. LouisThis is a rich, powerful, and wide-ranging exploration of moral courage, of inaction and action. It shows what stops people from helping—and what leads them to help others. These are tremendously important issues. The focus on training, and how to influence bystanders to act, is especially valuable. -- Ervin Staub, author of The Roots of Goodness and Resistance to Evil

Book SynopsisEngaging and timely, this book is an invaluable resource for parents who want their children to become socially responsible and globally aware adultsAs youth culture seems to grow more self-centred and obsessed with 'Me,'Michael Ungar shows us that, in fact, children today are as willing as ever to think 'We.' Given the right signals, and some important changes to the homes we live in, our schools and communities, kids will seek out close connections with the adults in their lives. Like generations before them, they want to be noticed for the contributions they can make. What they need, though, is compassion and encouragement from parents, and some careful attention to their most important connections, those made at home. Combining inspiring stories taken from his clinical work with families and children with expert research gathered from around the world, Ungar reveals how the close connections kids crave, and the support adults provide, can help kids realize their full potent

Thomas Nelson Publishers The Opposite of Certainty
Book SynopsisThis gripping memoir about what it means to face uncertainty details the plans Janine had for her family and her life that were gutted by her then 10-year-old son Mason’s diagnosis of a cancerous brain tumor, only to be followed by her own cancer diagnosis. All Janine Urbaniak Reid ever wanted was for everyone she loved to be okay so she might relax and maybe be happy. Her life strategy was simple: do everything right. This included trying to be the perfect mother to her three kids so they would never experience the kind of pain she pretended not to feel growing up. What she didn’t expect was the chaos of an out-of-control life that begins when her young son’s hand begins to shake and he is diagnosed with a brain tumor at age 10.This moving memoir is the story of Janine’s reluctant journey beyond easy answers and platitudes. She searches for a source of strength bigger than her circumstances, only to have her circumstances becomeTrade Review'A beautiful sucker punch, like life. Rutgers University Press When Boys Become Parents Adolescent Fatherhood in
Book SynopsisAfter school specials about teenage pregnancy abound. Whether in television or in society, the focus tends toward young girls coping with all of the emotional and physical burdens of pregnancy but rarely is the perspective of the teenage fathers portrayed. In this informative book, Mark S. Kiselica draws on his many years of counseling teenage fathers to offer a compassionate look at the difficult life circumstances and the complicated hardships these young men experience. He dispels many of the myths surrounding teenage fatherhood and shows that, contrary to popular belief, these young men are often emotionally and physically involved in relationships with their partner and their child. But without support and guidance from adults, these relationships often deteriorate in the first year of the child-'s life. Kiselica offers advice for how professionals and policy makers can assist these young men and improve services for them. When Boys Become Parents provides a moving portrait of teeTrade Review"This book shines a much-needed light on the struggles of adolescent fathers and what our society must do to help them. In so doing, he dispels many myths while simultaneously acknowledging the personal struggles and contextual constraints these young males often encounter. He skillfully portrays the double bind that grips many young fathers—they are underprivileged yet underserved. The book's most significant contribution, therefore, arguably lies in its comprehensive review of programs and auxiliary resources that may be marshaled to assist young fathers and their families. John Wiley and Sons Ltd How Socialization Happens on the Ground
Book SynopsisThis monograph builds upon our cumulative efforts to investigate personal storytelling as a medium of socialization in two disparate cultural worlds. Drawing upon interdisciplinary fields of study that take a discourse-centered approach to socialization, we combined ethnography, longitudinal home observations, and micro-level analysis of everyday talk to study this problem in Taiwanese families in Taipei and European-American families in Longwood, Chicago. Comparative analyses of 192 hours, of video-recorded observations revealed that convserational stories of young children''s past experiences occurred in both sites at remarkably similar rates and continued apace across the age span, yielding nearly 900 narrations. Thse and other similarities coexisted with differences in culturall salient interpretive frameworks and participant roles, forming distinct socializating pathways. The Taipei families enacted a didactic framework, prolifically and elaborately narrating and correcting childrTable of ContentsAbstract I. Introduction II. Book SynopsisRecognized as a finalist for the CAE 2018 Outstanding Book Award!Part historic ethnography, part linguistic case study and part a mother's memoir, Kisisi tells the story of two boys (Colin and Sadiki) who, together invented their own language, and of the friendship they shared in postcolonial Kenya. Documents and examines the invention of a new' language between two boys in postcolonial Kenya Offers a unique insight into child language development and use Presents a mixed genre narrative and multidisciplinary discussion that describes the children's border-crossing friendship and their unique and innovative private language Beautifully written by one of the foremost scholars in child development, language acquisition and education, the book provides a seamless blending of the personal and the ethnographic The story of Colin and Sadiki raises profound questions and haTrade Review"The book is a fascinating account of the genesis of the language in a region where relatively rich American and European settlers and researchers interact with the economically challenged locals. They cooperate with each other, despite experiences of separation, habitats with invisible physical boundaries, sentiments of contempt and respect, situations of embarrassment, and the feeling that it is impossible to change this society with so little social justice and legal equality. The author does not condemn anyone, but she shows her indignation about the hidden and overt racism and the unjust distribution of privileges. These boys were able to transgress the symbolic borders, breaking all the unwritten rules, among others by creating a new language with its own structure. The book is worth reading both for the social aspects of life in Kenya and for the linguistic aspects."--Peter Bakker, Journal of Pidgin and Creole Langauges 32.2 "The book stands in contrast to many of the prevailing theories at the time about the formation of new languages. Throughout the book, the author looks critically at linguistic theories of language formation that were prevalent at the time and contrasts them the development of a language between her son Colin and his Kenyan friend, Sadiki. This comparison is used to show how the field of linguistics developed to the point where language creation among children, with no outside help from adults, would be seen as possible. Thus, her research adds to the scholarship on language development in children, a research area that is lacking in linguistics literature."--Eric Baptiste, Anthropology Book Forum Table of ContentsAcknowledgments ix Map xiii Prologue xv 1 Uweryumachini!: A Language Discovered 1 2 Herodotus Revisited: Language Origins, Forbidden Experiments, New Languages, and Pidgins 17 3 Lorca’s Miracle: Play, Performance, Verbal Art, and Creativity 35 4 Kekopey Life: Transcending Linguistic Hegemonic Borders and Racialized Postcolonial Spaces 58 5 Kisisi: Language Form, Development, and Change 93 Epilogue 132 In Memoriam 137 Notes 138 References 146 Index 157
