Book SynopsisMargrit Linck is one of the twentieth century’s most prominent ceramics artists. Over the course of her five-decade-long career, the ceramicist developed utilitarian pottery as well as a unique artistic oeuvre that deserves to be rediscovered. This book therefore focuses on her sculptures, which break up the simplicity and formal language of utilitarian ceramics and expand them into the playful and surreal: jugs grow birds beaks, vases take on feminine forms. On the one hand, we encounter the artist and ceramicist Margrit Linck through a personal perspective, and on the other, her work is presented within the context of twentieth-century art movements, especially Surrealism. The attractive illustrated section allows readers to delve deeper into the work and makes clear how current and refreshing Linck’s work remains to this day.

Hatje Cantz The Snake and the Lightning: Aby Warburg's

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAby Warburg in America: An Album When Aby Warburg left for the United States in September 1895, it was not foreseeable that his search for the symbolic foundations of art would become one of the most fascinating events in the history of his field. Warburg’s American journey lasted only months, and his stay in the Pueblo communities only a few weeks, but in 1923 he presented his findings in the groundbreaking lecture on the “Snake Ritual”. Using selected photographs, ethnologic drawings, and numerous documents, this story and picture book details a journey of discovery. It traverses a vast continent of research, showing Warburg’s diverse interlocutors — from chiefs to missionaries — and especially his records of dances, ritual objects, and artworks full of symbolic representations. The documents are evidence of the emerging shift in Warburg’s scholarly thinking, which would eventually lead to the cross-border cultural comparative methodology for which he is now held in worldwide esteem.

Hatje Cantz Nina Malterud (Bilingual edition)

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisNina Malterud is one of Norway’s most prominent ceramics artists. Over the course of her five-decade-long career, she has developed a unique artistic oeuvre with references to traditional ceramic objects like plates, bowls, and tiles, but the emphasis is more on expression than on function. She explores the possibilities of clay and glazes in a free and undogmatic way, and is open to the visual results that can arise through controlled coincidences. The traces of the process are an essential part of her visual language. Sometimes the motifs are recognizable, but for the most part, she works with abstraction. The pieces radiate both tenderness and fragility, strength, and power. Combined with the materiality and weight of ceramics, the results are artworks with a strong sensory appeal.

Hirmer Verlag A Princely Pursuit: The Malcolm D. Gutter

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisMalcolm D. Gutter has been forming his porcelain collection over several decades with a focus on early Meissen, particularly the royal collection that Augustus II commissioned for the Japanisches Palais, his pleasure palace in Dresden. In addition to the porcelain works produced at Meissen, Augustus II avidly collected those imported from China and Japan. A Princely Pursuit reproduces many documented pieces from this royal collection, including both Meissen and Asian works. The Gutter promised gift exemplifies a significant range of early Meissen wares, including many examples of early red stoneware (Böttgersteinzeung) as well as numerous pieces created under Johann Höroldt’s (1696–1775) direction. A Princely Pursuit will serve as an important contribution to the field of porcelain studies, especially in its significance to San Francisco. Gutter’s entire collection of Meissen and related Asian porcelains has been promised to the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the city he calls home and where he began collecting more than forty years ago. Through the Malcolm D. Gutter collection, the Legion of Honor will become a destination for the study of early Meissen porcelain, and the publication of this catalogue exemplifies this ongoing scholarship. A Princely Pursuit presents more than one hundred significant pieces from the collection of Malcolm D. Gutter, an avid collector of Meissen works of art. His collection represents exemplary works from the German manufactory, including especially the royal collection that Augustus II commissioned for the Japanisches Palais, his pleasure palace in Dresden.

Book SynopsisAn unprecedented exploration of Venetian maiolica set in a vibrant context of hybridity and exchange. Introduced by migrant potters ca.1500, the medium offers a unique point of entry into Venice’s material world shaped by Mediterranean trade and local luxury production. This exhibition catalogue explores maiolica’s multifaceted connection to objects ranging from Islamic metalwork to Venetian glass. Accompanying an exhibition held at the Gardiner Museum, Toronto, Global Luxury in Renaissance Venice explores the role of maiolica within the vast range of luxury objects made in Venice and imported into the city, highlighting the place of the medium at the nexus of cross-media and cross-cultural exchanges. Thematic discussions investigate the circulation of artefacts and the migration of ornament, the potter’s workshop and artistic lineage, and maiolica’s position in the material culture of splendour that characterized elite interiors. The book addresses works made in the thriving workshops of Jacomo da Pesaro and Domenego da Venezia, and suggests a connection between the rise of villeggiatura in the mid-sixteenth century and the ascent Venice’s maiolica industry.

  • Funk You Too! Humor and Irreverence in Ceramic

Hirmer Verlag Funk You Too! Humor and Irreverence in Ceramic

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe first book to connect the history of Funk Art to contemporary ceramic practice. Funk You Too! arrives at a moment when clay has unprecedented currency in the art world as a sculptural medium. It is the first book to connect the history of Funk Art to contemporary ceramic practice through an exploration of the enduring role of humor in clay image-making. The founding generation of Funk artists used forms of subversion to deflate the power of the aesthetic hierarchy that dismissed ceramics as hobby art. Today, in the hands of a younger, more diverse cohort, the irreverent approach is a powerful tool of critique and personal expression and the “spoonful of sugar” to help discuss sociopolitical concerns of our time. Showcasing over 50 works from a 2023 exhibition at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City, this catalog addresses the historical context for the emergence of ceramic sculpture in 1960s Funk Art and applies a critical lens to work by its contemporary successors. The exhibition’s curator, Angelik Vizcarrondo-Laboy, conceptually frames the exhibition’s emphasis on humor as a tool for tackling personal and political themes. Garth Johnson contributes an essay on the impulse for humor in American ceramics that lead to Funk ceramics. The catalog also features biographies of the artists, color images, and a select bibliography.

  • Ukraine: Art for Architecture

DOM Publishers Ukraine: Art for Architecture

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the times when the Ukrainian art sphere was regulated by the Soviet institutions, local monumental and decorative arts existed at the frontier of the Party’s propaganda and the artistic thirst to experiments. Nowadays, Ukrainian mosaics are wrested out of the architectural context of the country in both literal and metaphorical ways. The artworks are liquidated from the buildings they were specifically created for and indiscriminately despised as ideological pieces of no value. Furthermore, in legal terms mosaics are not defined as objects of art that makes them unguarded in the face of the decommunization process. Initially incepted as a guide, this book is an equally beneficial companion for the journey through space (in the context of the geographical area of modern Ukraine) and hitchhiking through time (in terms of Ukrainian cultural history). It incorporates the selection of Ukrainian mosaics which undermines the simplified perspective on the Soviet art heritage in Ukraine. The volume is generously supplemented with unique photographs of the documentary photographer Yevgen Nikiforov who continues the research, initially presented in the book Decommunized: Ukrainian Soviet Mosaics (2017). Together with the art historian Polina Baitsym who reveals striking linkages of the mosaics’ plots with broader historical context, he will guide you through the testimonies of the genuine creativity of Ukrainian monumental artists which managed to flourish on the most infertile soil.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisWith contemporary advertising and sales catalogues as its sources, this book represents the first exhaustive survey of the Ikora and Myra lines in glass produced between the 1920s and 1950s by the Wurttembergische Metallwarenfabrik AG (WMF) at Geislingen/ Steige. At the instigation of the then WMF director general, Hugo Debach, WMF had been making high-quality art glass (called "Unika pieces", indicating that they were one-of-a-kind) as well as lines in mass-produced art glas (Ikora and Myra). First presented to the public to great acclaim at the Wurttembergisches Landesmuseum in Stuttgart by museum director G. E. Pazaurek, these pieces are now much sought after as valuable collector's items. Ikora and Myra Glass by WMF not only deals exhaustively with the history of this glass but also provides aficionados and collectors of Ikora and Myra glass for the first time with a complete catalogue of WMF products. The availability of this information makes it possible, first, to distinguish from the original later glass made as imitation of WMF glass by rival competitors and, second, to identify accurately each piece of Unika, Ikora or Myra glass.

    Arnoldsche Gilbert Portanier: Oeuvre 2000-2008

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn 1948, Gilbert Portanier, a painter, discovered clay as a material to work with at Vallauris, the ceramics centre in the south of France. There he developed his unique style in the medium. What is so significant about his early work is his mastery of drawing on pottery. In the early years, Portanier "drew" with the brush on his pieces mainly Arcadian genre scenes inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity. On the look-out for new colour combinations, colour textures and colour compositions, however, Portanier gradually distanced himself from drawing and switched to free painting on ceramics. "Every one of his pieces belongs in a museum," thus Picasso commenting on Gilbert Portanier's "painterly ceramics". And indeed Portanier, like no other, conjures colourful, surrealist abstract-figurative paintings on the ceramics he has designed. In his pieces, the "Mediterranean delight" in representing and communicating comes into its own. The inexhaustible riches of Portanier's teeming imagination are unique in the international ceramics scene, a status that has been justly rewarded with numerous international prizes and awards and is now being showcased in this comprehensive monograph.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisGlass is a threshold material, serving as both a divider and an opening, for one can always see what is behind it. This is a unique phenomenon and it is confounding, as well as being alluring and enhancing, making the space breathe. Florian Lechner, born in 1938, has dedicated himself to this unique material. He explores its substance and formal possibilities through architectural works and sculptural objects. He also experiments with it in combination with the media of light, sound and movement. For him it is essential to forge his work single-handedly, because only unrestricted personal creative input and the development of one's own, often innovative ways of working can ensure an authentic result. However, the concepts behind his works and their spiritual roots are always more important to him than the process of their creation. Intellectual significance defines Florian Lechner as an artist. His takes an intellectual and philosophically motivated approach, but the result is always a sensory experience and never dominated by dry theory. Arnoldsche Torbjorn Kvasbo: Ceramics. Between the Possible

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Norwegian Torbjorn Kvasbo (b. 1953) is considered a leading figure in the field of contemporary ceramic art. He exhibits regularly in Asia, Europe and the US and achieved a unique status as an artist and pioneer, and also as a teacher with widespread influence having been actively engaged in restructuring the art schools where he taught. The art historian Jorunn Veiteberg analyses in this publication Kvasbo's works from 1977 to the present day. Most critics have described his objects as forms inspired by nature, by lava eruptions or landscapes. Veiteberg is critical of this and sees them more as bodily expressions. Kerstin Wickmann, design historian and former professor at Konstfack in Stockholm, discusses Kvasbo's twelve years as teacher in Stockholm and his influence on his students and the educational system. Torbjorn Kvasbo's work is represented in numerous international museums and private collections, such as the National Museum, Stockholm/SE, Designmuseum Danmark, Copenhagen/DK, The National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo/NO, Auckland Institute and Museum/NZ, Museum of Modern Ceramic Art, Gifu Ceramics-Park Mino, Gifu/JP, World Ceramic Exposition/KOR, Daum Museum of Contemporary Art, Sedalia MO/US.

Book SynopsisBorn in 1942, Narcissus Quagliata studied painting and graphics in Rome and completed his studies at the Art Institute of San Francisco. Very early on, he discovered glass as the most suitable material with which to express himself artistically, focussing in particular on the phenomenon of light and its interplay with coloured glass. In cooperation with industry, Quagliata experimented at an early stage with the development of new forms and applications of glass. Today Narcissus Quagliata is considered one of the most significant glass artists, drawing worldwide attention through his spectacular works in public spaces, such as the Taiwan Dome of Light, the largest illuminated glass ceiling in the world, which forms the roof of the subway station in Kaohsiung, Taiwan. The construction stretches across an approximately 30-metre-wide space. His glass dome in the Santa Maria degli Angeli church, built by Michelangelo within the Baths of Diocletian in Rome, is equally well-known. Therefore his extensive art collections include a total of 97 majolicas, which have been kept at his former home at Frauenplan in Weimar until today. After the first unpublished compilation of the collection in 1958, this publication provides the first comprehensive art historical study of the individual objects, based on the most recent research findings. Furthermore, it details the provenance of the majolica that Goethe purchased between c. 1800 and 1830, especially from Nuremberg. The relations between Venice and the southern German trade centres play an important role here, opening up new insights into the majolica trade. Text in German.

Book SynopsisThe Austrian ceramic artist Thomas Bohle is an extraordinary figure in the field of ceramic vessels. His double-walled objects, created at the wheel with technical perfection, effortlessly transcend the boundaries between ceramic and free art. Their interior and exterior forms create an accentuated contrast which opens up an exciting dialogue between the vessel and the space. They appear as a consequence of the will for clear form and design, which is underscored by the sensual, haptic quality of the reduced burnt oxblood and celadon glazes. With clear elements and exciting correlations, Thomas Bohle opens up new dimensions for the art of the vessel as a fundamental possibility of abstract sculptural design. Numerous illustrations of individual objects, group photos and details are included, as well as expert essays to uncover the beauty of precise geometry combined with painterly glazes.

Book SynopsisDaniel Kruger (b. 1951), widely known as a jewellery artist, presents an overview of his ceramic works, featuring 230 pieces created over twenty years. Classic examples - tulip and lidded vases, delftware and dinner services - are familiar references, which Kruger decorates with images of footballers, homoerotic nudes or casts of twigs or bones. Worlds collide, revealing our preconceptions regarding conventions that provide a manipulated view of reality. There is less interest in the spectacular; Kruger's choice of images however, leads to unexpected, provocative combinations of form with decoration. In a continual process of artistic acquisition, new interpretation and appropriation, Kruger explores the interstice between historical archetypes and kitsch within European ceramic history.

Book SynopsisFor centuries ceramics have been a central feature of Chinese art and culture. They were employed in everyday life and served as both ritualistic and funerary objects. Dr Heribert Meurer's pre-eminent collection of 174 high-quality pieces dating from 1050 BCE to AD 1280 - which up until now has remained unpublished - offers an impressive panorama of the artefacts' roles, as well as the vessel forms and techniques of early Chinese ceramic art, complemented by over 30 objects from the GRASSI Museum Leipzig, where the collection was endowed in 2017. The focal points of the collection are the ceramics of the Tang and Song dynasties. Examples of the popular Sancai (tricolour) lead glaze, Celadon porcelain from Yueyao, Yaozhou and Longquan and Changsha ware, so-called Jian black porcelain from Jianyang Prefecture and Quingbai ware from the southern kiln sites of the Song era illustrate the wealth, diversity, high quality and exceptional appeal of early Chinese ceramics. Book SynopsisThanks to a conscious reduction in form and colour, the ceramics by the Swiss artist Sonja Duo-Meyer (b. 1953) unfurl incredible expressive power. Their flowing silhouettes appear almost meditative, fixed points emerge in the light asymmetry of their forms, and a sophisticated play on light and shade develops. Surfaces, material, corpora and technique are interwoven through a minimalistic design concept that celebrates stillness and the concept of the void. Photographs of objects as well as exhibition views show vessels, objects and wall installations from 1992 to 2017. A particular highlight are works and ideas from the ceramic centre Tajimi, where, as artist in residence, the artist engaged intensively with Japanese techniques. With exciting illustrations and informative essays, this first monograph on Sonja Duo-Meyer presents the development of a career in contemporary ceramic art now spanning over forty years.

Book SynopsisIn the glass art of Franz Xaver Höller (b. 1950) artisanal techniques rich in tradition, such as cutting and engraving, collide with modern forms. Vibrantly sculptural bodies engraved on their surface with fine lines, the drawing of which generates impressive depth via incidental light, make up the majority of the vessels and objects that he has created over the last thirty-five years. Sharp edges protrude and challenge the conception of a harmonious form. This publication illustrates all stages of Höller's development, drawing the view to the artist's multi-variant language of forms. Large-format details reveal the beauty and precision of the meticulous workmanship. Accomplished authors expound sources of inspiration as well as turning points in creativity, while preliminary sketches afford insights into the developmental process of his works. Arnoldsche Shozo Michikawa: Ceramic Art

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisTorsion and tension are characteristic of the vessels created by the exceptional Japanese ceramicist Shozo Michikawa (b. 1953), whose works are reminiscent of rock strata and lava flows. Michikawa is known for his unique technique, for turning edgy, dynamic sculptures on the potter's wheel. First he cuts and scores a solid block of clay before he carves out the interior hollow through pressing and turning with a rod and his hands. Natural-looking surfaces emerge, just as geological forces formed the earth's surface - an irrepressible energy from the inside out. Michikawa's pots, with their irregular shape, granular texture, and rich earthen hues are so poetic in their appearance that they have been likened to 'haikus in clay'. Arnoldsche Fratelli Toso Murano: 1902-1980

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisA creative exchange with artists such as the painter Guido Cadorin or the ceramicist and sculptor Hans Stoltenberg-Lerche brought the second generation Toso Brothers to the forefront of Murano glass manufactories at the beginning of the twentieth century. After the Second World War Ermanno Toso and Pollio Perelda were among the most famous designers and continued the production of lavish series in glass, complemented from the 1950s onwards with high-quality one-offs executed mainly in the celebrated millefiori technique. This decoration consists of a multitude of tiny coloured discs, known as murrini, which are produced by melting, cooling and cutting bundled canes of glass to form a cross-section pattern. Together with Caterina Toso, renowned Murano expert Marc Heiremans looks back on and reviews the complex history of the famous glass manufactory. Well-informed texts, hitherto unpublished sketches and archive photos make Fratelli Toso Murano an essential reference work for all connoisseurs of glass.

Book SynopsisThe publication Beneath the Skin provides an overview of the last ten years of work by the Swiss artist Corina Staubli (b. 1959). It shows the altercation in the tension between exterior and interior worlds and the ambivalence of beauty, the beguiling, the sinister and even the unfathomable. With diverse media - be it porcelain, latex, painting or digital collage - the artist directs a dialogue of opposing sides. The question she always poses is 'how does the clandestine and the unconscious reveal itself in something that is manifest' - and, vice versa, 'how does the external view reveal the internal view'? The book itself is sure to arouse intrigue, as it features a nylon sculpture on the cover! Text in English and German.
