With the ongoing advancement of new technologies and more developed studio-based transfer processes artists continue to push the boundaries of the medium. • Kintsugi: The Poetic Mend

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Kintsugi: The Poetic Mend

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisA stunning book on kintsugi, the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery with precious metals to highlight its history beautifully. A broken pot is made whole again, and within its golden repair we see a world of meaning. Kintsugi is the art of embracing imperfection. In Western cultures, the aim of repair has been to make the broken item ‘as good as new’. Kintsugi on the other hand, is a Japanese art that leaves an obvious repair – one that may appear fragile, but which actually makes the restored ceramic piece stronger, more beautiful, and more valuable than before. Leaving clear, bold, visible lines with the appearance of solid gold, it never hides the story of the object’s damage. Kintsugi traces memory, bringing together the moment of destruction and the gold seams of repair through finely-honed skills and painstaking, time-consuming labour in the creation of a new pot from the old. There is a story to be told with every crack, every chip. This story inevitably leads to kintsugi’s greatest strength. an intimate metaphoric narrative of loss and recovery, breakage and restoration, tragedy and the ability to overcome it. A kintsugi repair speaks of individuality and uniqueness, fortitude and resilience, and the beauty to be found in survival. Kintsugi leads us to a respectful and appreciative acceptance of hardship and ageing. Author Bonnie Kemske explores kintsugi's metaphorical power as well as exploring the technical and practical aspects of the art, meeting with artists and ceramists in Japan and the US to discuss their personal connection to this intricate technique. With the inclusion of diary entries, personal stories, and in-depth exploration of its origin and symbolism, this book shows kintsugi's metaphoric strength as well as its striking aesthetic, making it a unique and powerful art form that can touch our lives.Trade ReviewThoughtfully written and splendidly illustrated. * The Economist *You’re given the opportunity to travel to Japan through its pages and absorb more of this brilliant philosophy on objects and life. * Stylist *Bonnie Kemske traces the history of the art form in this lavishly illustrated book. * The i *Kintsugi: The Poetic Mend is a beautifully illustrated book where artist, Japanese tea ceremony student and author Bonnie Kemske guides us through the origins and techniques of kintsugi . . . It is visually gorgeous, its selection of pictures exquisite and it taught me a great deal of kintsugi. . . . The book is a testament of a narrative of loss and recovery, breakage and restoration, tragedy and ability to overcome it in respectful acceptance of loss and hardships. -- Eleonora Faina * The Japan Society *Kintsugi reveals how much more varied and exciting the practice of ceramic joining is than the iconic version now known internationally. * The Los Angeles Review of Books *Kemske’s rich and comprehensive survey, which also takes in the ritual of the tea ceremony, the contemporary art scene of kintsugi, and the framing of the techniques as a metaphor for overcoming tragedy and as a model of sustainability, illuminates a complex cultural sensibility with a long pedigree. * World of Interiors *Table of ContentsPrologue 1. Book SynopsisBernard Leach (1887-1979) was as renowned in Japan and the East as in Europe and America, both as an artist-craftsman and as a thinker. His interpretation of the traditions of the Orient in the making of pots - and in evolving a philosophy of life - was a lodestar for many potters in the West. Beyond East and West, first published in 1978, is more than an autobiography. Full of sharply- etched and amusing recollections, it contains much of Leach’s deeper thought and a great deal too about the practical application of his ideas. Its recurrent theme is the meeting of East and West at all levels - artistic, cultural, social, political.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisPotter, writer, teacher, editor, curator and gay rights activist, Emmanuel Cooper was a unique figure in the cultural landscape of this country for almost half a century. When he died in 2012 he left behind not only an extraordinary body of work, but also an archive that illuminated both his own life and career and that of the many other makers, artists and activists who had been his friends, colleagues or the subject of his writing. This book is based almost exclusively on that archive. Using his unpublished memoirs, diaries, and correspondence, Making Emmanuel Cooper illuminates the journey of an intelligent, if unconfident, working class boy growing up in a small north Derbyshire mining village whose life was transformed, firstly at school, by the magic of clay, and then in adult life by the liberation politics of the late 1960s. The book includes a fascinating account of Emmanuel's career as a potter as well as his thoughts on a range of issues from the art versus craft debate through to gay marriage and monogamy, as well his passion for folk art, insights into his work at the Royal College of Art and his editorship of the internationally acclaimed Ceramic Review magazine. Making Emmanuel Cooper also charts his involvement in the gay liberation movement, his journalism for the Morning Star and his part in the creation of the hugely influential Gay Left collective. He was the art critic for the original Gay News and his groundbreaking books on aspects of queer art and culture - including the pioneering The Sexual Perspective - examined issues around sexuality and the visual arts that pre-date the Tate Gallery's recent Queer Art in Britain show by some thirty years. Richly illustrated, Making Emmanuel Cooper is both a personal and a social history that celebrates the life and times of an important artist and remarkable man.Trade ReviewWhen not making his own rather marvellous pots, Emmanuel Cooper spent more than four decades commentating on the ceramic scene and telling the stories of other artists, while rarely talking about his own life and work. These engaging memoirs and writings offer a long-awaited corrective, reminding us of Cooper's central position in the history of studio ceramics, and his remarkable ability to respond with sympathy and insight across its complex and sometimes factional terrain. Book SynopsisThe life and legacy of brilliant but elusive potter Lucie Rie is investigated through interviews, letters and the analysis of her elegant, modernist vessels Lucie Rie (1902–1995), one of the 20th century's most celebrated and iconic potters, combined an acute understanding of modernism with the skills of her chosen craft. • Italian Maiolica and Other Early Modern Ceramics

Paul Holberton Publishing Ltd Italian Maiolica and Other Early Modern Ceramics

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis is the first catalogue of the collection of early modern ceramics in the Courtauld. The pieces in the collection showcase brilliantly the skill of potters and pottery painters working at the time of Raphael and Titian.Maiolica is one of the most revealing expressions of Renaissance art. Its extraordinary range of colours retain the vividness that they had when they left the potter's kiln. Italian potters absorbed techniques and shapes from the Islamic world and incorporated ornament and subject matter from the arts of ancient Rome. This new approach to pottery making, combined with the invention of printing, woodcut and engraving, resulted in an extraordinary type of painted pottery, praised by Vasari in his Lives of the Artists for 'surpassing the ancient with its brilliance of glaze and variety of painting'.The collection boasts a magnificent group of vessels made during the high Renaissance, the golden age of Italian maiolica. It includes precious and delicate Deruta lustreware with imagery deriving from Perugino and Raphael, as well as vessels painted in a narrative style of pottery painting known as istoriato. Highlights include vessels depicting episodes taken from the first printed Bibles of the Renaissance. Istoriato maiolica flourished particularly in the lands of the Dukes of Urbino, who promoted this craft by sending painted pottery to prestigious patrons across Europe.Emblems and devices painted on the pottery help us understand that they were meant to be used and enjoyed by the elites in Renaissance society, such as the Medici and other great Tuscan families. The catalogue will include two recent gifts to the Courtauld, a rare tile of the famous patroness of the arts Marchioness Isabella D'Este, and a refined dish painted with the story of Diana and Actaeon. All major Renaissance pottery centres are represented in the collection, including Siena, Faenza and Venice, as well as splendid examples of the mysterious pharmacy jars made at the foot of the mountain of Gran Sasso in the town of Castelli d'Abruzzo. These achievements of the art of pottery in the early modern period are completed by fine examples of Ottoman pottery, as well as examples of Valencian lustreware.Sani's introductory essay on the Victorian collector Thomas Gambier Parry will shed new light on the development of this fascinating collection, making links between Gambier Parry's artistic practice and his collecting and revealing new insights into his taste as a collector. Each detailed entry uncovers a wealth of new information on the provenance of the pieces.

Book SynopsisA major figure in the Arte Povera movement of the late 1960s, the renowned Italian artist Giuseppe Penone is known for his exploration of the relationship between art and the natural world in a body of work that includes sculpture, performance, works on paper, and even garden design. His first works in porcelain, the exquisite disks presented here draw attention to the moment of touch—the convergence of surface and skin—that underpins so much of his work. Published to accompany The Frick Collection, New York’s temporary installation of works by Penone, this new volume comprises eleven porcelain disks that the artist made during his 2013 residency at the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, the influential porcelain factory founded in the 18th century. A continuation of his Propagazioni (Propagations) series, begun in 1995, which includes various media, each disk bears the imprint of one of the artist’s fingertips. One of them is in gold, its imprint a variation on the artist’s index finger. Never before presented to the public, the installation of the disks in a gallery adjacent to the Frick’s early Italian paintings on gold grounds and the porcelain room kindles a rich artistic dialogue with both porcelain and gold.Table of ContentsDirector’s Foreword by Ian Wardropper; Introduction: “But there on the shining shield”: Giuseppe Penone’s Propagazioni at the Frick by Xavier F. 5 in stock

Book SynopsisZao Wou-Ki (1920–2013) was the first artist of the Chinese diaspora to achieve international recognition and was one of France’s most important painters of the postwar era and beyond. His large abstract canvases were in step with those of New York School artists of the late 1940s and ‘50s and emerged from the growing international impulse for non-objective painting. Zao married western vanguard painting with Chinese traditions of calligraphy and ink drawing and in doing so created a powerful personal aesthetic that was uniquely his own. Drawn largely from European private collections, the works of art in this catalogue have almost never been exhibited before and were deeply personal to Zao. The ceramics consist of two main groups – plates produced in the late 1970s in association with Sèvres, bearing designs created by Zao expressly for this purpose, and later designs from the 2000s painted directly on vases, bowls and plates that were subsequently editioned by Maison Bernardaud in Limoges. Zao worked in watercolour throughout his long life and this catalogue features examples from as early as 1960. But during his last years, the artist rediscovered the medium with newfound enthusiasm and turned increasingly to nature as the source of inspiration. In 2008, he gave up oil painting entirely, and for the next two years, watercolour was his primary form of expression.Table of ContentsFriendship Foreword by Kevin Sharp, Linda W. and S. Book SynopsisJanet Leach’s childhood in Texas through the Roaring Twenties and the Depression imbued her with resilience and numerous practical skills, initially acquired on her grandparents’ self-sufficient farmstead. At nineteen she took a Greyhound bus to cosmopolitan New York and soon found work as a sculptor’s assistant. During the war she worked on Staten Island, welding the hulls of US-Navy destroyers. After discovering pottery, she met Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada at Black Mountain College in North Carolina, before spending two years potting in Japan, where her love of pottery was sealed. Bernard and Janet planned to marry and build a pottery near Kyoto, but two years absence from St Ives obliged Bernard to return to Cornwall. A year later in 1956, Janet reluctantly left Japan, persuaded to join Bernard in a country completely unknown to her, England. There she stayed, becoming manager of the world-famous Leach Pottery for the next 40 years. This biography uses previously unpublished letters, notebooks and diaries and is a richly-informed portrayal of a pioneering potter.

Book SynopsisThe first monograph on a beloved American ceramicist who has been making joyful and original work for nearly 80 years Born in 1931, and living in New York, Alice Mackler today is still pushing forward not only her own art but also the boundaries of contemporary art across sculpture, painting, drawing and collage. While long beloved and admired by artists, Mackler over the last few years has finally found the wide and enthusiastic audience she deserves. With a focus on the female figure, Mackler’s work is, as Matthew Higgs writes in this book, “a visceral accumulation of her experiences translated into a material form.” Mackler’s vibrant, voluptuous ceramic sculptures evoke the Venus of Willendorf as well as versions of the female form by Willem de Kooning, Gaston Lachaise and Niki de Saint Phalle. At the same time, her work is in dialogue with contemporary ceramicists such as Ruby Neri, Magdalena Suarez Frimkess and Betty Woodman. The artist cites Paul Klee as an influence on her paintings, which feel rooted in modernism; her drawings call to mind Alexander Calder, Jean Dubuffet and Saul Steinberg. While these influences and references are telling, this comprehensive overview makes clear that her vision is genuinely her own. As Kelly Taxter writes in the book’s central essay, “Mackler’s visibility resists the seemingly inevitable invisibility that befalls ageing women.” Now approaching the beginning of her ninth decade, Alice Mackler and her art continue to be as vital, urgent and current as ever.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisTrained at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-arts de Paris in the atelier of Georges Jeanclos, Elsa Sahal quickly focused on working with ceramics for their sensuality and fragility. Former resident at the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts, in 2013 (Helena, MT), at Alfred University, New York State College of Ceramics, in 2009-2010 (Alfred, NY) and at the Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres (2007-2008), Elsa Sahal has also taught at the Haute École d'Art et de Design in Geneva and at the École Supérieure d'Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg. She experiments in particular with the idea of volume and balance in sculpture, while returning to an exploration of the themes of the body and femininity. Ambiguous, dense, sensual and colourful, her works oscillate between anthropomorphic landscape and the landscaped body, taking up Cézanne's dream of uniting women's curves with the shoulders of hills. Elsa Sahal conceives, kneads and then produces complex and disturbing forms sustained by dense colours and sublimated through enamel. Winner of the MAIF prize for sculpture, in 2008, and the contemporary sculpture prize awarded by the Fondazione Francesco Messina, in 2007, Elsa Sahal has presented her work in one-woman shows and group exhibitions in numerous museums around the globe: at the Bonnefantenmuseum, 'Ceramix, Ceramic art from Gauguin to Schütte', in 2015 (Maastricht); at the MAD Museum, 'Body and Soul, New International Ceramics', in 2013 (New York); at the Fondation d'entreprise Ricard, 'Sculptures', in 2008 (Paris); and at the Incheon Women Artists Biennale, in 2008 (Korea). Book SynopsisAt the 25th International Colloquium of the Corpus Vitrearum, which took place in one of the greatest of all museums, The Hermitage in St. Petersburg, the researchers of many countries discussed stained glass collections for the first time. The present conference transactions, published in the three official languages of the international Corpus Vitrearum, are dedicated to the reawakening of interest in ancient stained glass from the late eighteenth century. The contributions are concerned partly with the creation of collections and the motives of their collectors, but also with the odyssey of various panels and groups of windows. Other studies address wider aspects of the history of collections and the museum display of stained glass.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThis book is one of the nine Corpus Vitrearum Medii Aevi (CVMA) volumes in which the medieval stained glass works of Saxony-Anhalt are compiled. It includes sites in the south of the federal state, excluding the cathedrals in Halberstadt and Naumburg. The glass works come from the period between the thirteenth and sixteenth century, and range from the early grisailles in Schulpforte and a Tree of Jesse cycle in Merseburg to pre-Reformation, very colorful imports of stained glass from Nuremberg in Eisleben. They show how this art form borrowed at various times from the east and west, the north and south, and thus arrived at individual solutions. As usual, the volume captivates with its high-quality color and black-and-white photos as well as its embedding of the holdings in art history and history in general.

Book Synopsis The catalogue is dedicated to diverse aspects of the rediscovery of color in the glass art of the nineteenth and twentieth century. The influential color theories of Isaac Newton, Michel Eugène Chevreul, Owen Jones, or Johannes Itten, which created the theoretical basis, are addressed as well as methods for producing stained glass developed by artists such as Clement Heaton, Charles Wasem, or Marcel Poncet, and Islamic art, which served as a source of inspiration. The examination of color and the expansion of the existing color palette in glass art are then presented based on works created within the context of the opalescent era in American stained glass, the Bauhaus, and the revival of Swiss stained glass by the St-Luc group of artists.

Book SynopsisThe leaded and cemented stained glass of the workshop of Heinrich Stäubli (1926-2016), St. Gallen, which is integrated into churches, restaurants, and schools, continues to shape the built environment of Eastern Switzerland today. The output of the workshop is characterized by relations among stained glass, murals, and graphic, textile, and funerary arts. This is the first analysis of the artworks and the estate from the perspective of intermediality and within the framework of modern art history. The study offers a systematic contextualization of Stäubli’s work within the history of stained-glass art in German-speaking countries, elucidating not only the operations of the artistic workshop but, more broadly, the artistic-social relevance of stained glass far beyond Switzerland in the 20th century.

Book SynopsisThis publication accompanies the eponymous exhibition at the Vitromusée Romont, for which Philip Baldwin (b. 1947) and Monica Guggisberg (b. 1955) explore the theme of the labyrinth and present several works of glass art from their recent exhibitions in France, England, and Denmark, as well as new works created especially for the Vitromusée Romont. Their preoccupation with ancient history, the migratory nature of humanity, and the interconnected relationships of objects with form, function, aesthetic beauty, and symbolic meaning combine in ways that illustrate the artists' unique perspectives across civilizations going back thousands of years. With contributions from internationally renowned specialists, the catalog reflects the reinterpretation of a classical theme in contemporary glass art.
