  • Johannes Nagel: Trial and Error

Arnoldsche Johannes Nagel: Trial and Error

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisHappenstance and gesture play a central role in the creative work of the ceramicist Johannes Nagel (b. 1979). His objects, which are orientated towards traditional ideas of vessels but are also freely composed, examine the associations between form and idea. Using work techniques such as burrowing into sand to form negative figurations for casting, he successfully performs his work directly and manually, lending the process of searching a tangible presence. The publication focuses on Nagel's oeuvre from the last four years. Earlier work groups are also presented as highlights. The collector Jörg Johnen and the philosopher Marcel René Marburger set Nagel's work in relation to artistic tendencies of the twentieth century and shine a light on the intellectual-historical background of the gestural as an intermediary between the power of imagination and its manifestation in an object. Text in English and German.

  • Gitte Jungersen: Ceramic Works

    Arnoldsche Gitte Jungersen: Ceramic Works

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisSince her debut in 1995, the Danish ceramist Gitte Jungersen (b. 1967) has gained much attention for her innovative work with ceramic glazes. She experiments with extremely active glazes that melt and run during firing, and form individual masses and cracks in a way that is reminiscent of geological processes. After cooling, the works appear as congealed traces, balancing on the edge between chaos and control. Whether we can expect an imminent dissolution, or a new narrative is taking shape is open to question. The objects give rise to a feeling of something uncontrollable and catastrophic, yet at the same time her ceramics have a sensually enticing feel to them as well as great visual appeal. For the first time, an overview is being presented of Gitte Jungersen's work from 1995 to 2017, with comprehensive illustrated documentation of around sixty pieces.

Arnoldsche Vessel/Sculpture 3: German and International

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn 2008 and 2013 the GRASSI Museum of Applied Arts in Leipzig presented two representative inventory publications under the title Vessel / Sculpture. German and International Ceramics since 1946, which attracted great interest from across the globe and were regarded as standard reference works. This third volume continues the series, against a backdrop of a renewed and extensive increase of modern studio ceramics in the museum's collection. As in the previous publications, the objects in the book enter into aesthetic dialogues, thus facilitating interesting perspectives in the development of artistic ceramics up to the present day. In doing so it becomes clear how ceramic objects are developing from a servient-functional gesture into ever consistent autonomous artworks yet without necessarily losing the vessel theme. Its multitude of current artists' biographies and illustrations of makers' marks make this a highly recommendable reference work. Text in English and German.Table of ContentsContents: Contributions from selected artists: Felicity Aylieff, Thomas Bohle, Werner Bunck, Carmen Dionyse, Allesandro Gallo, Louise Hindsgavl, Beate Kuhn, Sonngard Marcks, Ken Mihara, Sarah Pschorn, Elke Sada, Carolein Smit, Julian Stair, Robert Sturm and Henk Wolvers.

  • Gene Koss: Sculpture

    Arnoldsche Gene Koss: Sculpture

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisGene Koss creates majestic works in glass and steel that require demanding techniques to realise their monumental scale. These massive volumes of glass are married with elaborately engineered steel elements. Koss casts molten glass directly from the hot furnace, working with teams of highly-skilled assistants and rigging together intricate systems for transporting his finished abstract works for display in museums, galleries and public spaces. The artistic works deal with the self-sacrificing work of the American farmers in whose milieu the artist grew up. The first monograph published on the work of this groundbreaking glass artist features Koss's most important achievements and, through insightful essays by curators and critics, places them in historic perspective.

    Arnoldsche TONundTON: 1990-2019

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe ceramicist Theres Stampfli (b. 1952) and the musician Peter K Frey (b. 1941) have been working together under the name TONundTON since 1990. The artist duo always operate in terms of location, frequently searching for deserted buildings robbed of their function, such as a former reservoir or a transformer tower dependent on a power supply. The artists successfully revitalise the abandoned locations with sensitive, often anthropomorphic ceramics and sounds that fill the entire room. Even when intervening in museums, their installations alter the overall perception of space. In doing so, the two artistic disciplines come together to form a collective project, both audibly and visually. TONundTON is the first major documentation of their work. A soundtrack belonging to each of the images can be played by accessing QR codes in order to unite the acoustic and visual performances. Text in English and German.

Arnoldsche Seladon im Augenmerk: Jadegleiche Porzellane und

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisEver since at least the ninth century, the Chinese province of Zhejiang has been known for its fine celadon porcelain with wonderful shimmering surfaces in qing, the magnificent shades of green. Chinese celadon enjoyed its golden age from the eleventh to the fourteenth century, a time when it found its way into the Imperial collections and was exported worldwide. A decline of craftsmanship followed, and by the end of the nineteenth century celadon had almost completely disappeared. It was not until the 1950s that this style of pottery was successfully brought back to life. In the 1990s changes to the market economy forced porcelain artisans to reorient; to this day they have been able to successfully align themselves, similar to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage system, as 'Living State Treasures' with their unparalleled celadon glazes. Seladon im Augenmerk offers an exciting social anthropological insight into the cultural history, technology and sociality of celadon production in the porcelain metropolis of Longquan, PR, China, up to the present day. Out of stock

Book SynopsisA Passion for Porcelain brings together papers delivered at an international symposium held in 2018 at the Gardiner Museum, Toronto, Canada, in honour of Meredith Chilton, C.M., one of the foremost scholars and curators of 18th century European porcelain. Authored by leading scholars in the field, the essays take us on a journey from Sèvres, France to Japan via Boston, US, where we encounter both revered artists and anonymous makers, together with passionate collectors past and present. The contributions also explore the medium of porcelain in the context of artistic rivalry and gift exchange, as an object of fashion and scientific curiosity and as a symbol of status and power. Together they reveal the versatility of the medium, changing perceptions and endless possibilities for porcelain scholarship.

  • AVEM: Arte Vetreria Muranese. Artistic Production

Arnoldsche AVEM: Arte Vetreria Muranese. Artistic Production

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisArte Vetraria Muranese (AVEM) emerged from the liquidation of Successori Andrea Rioda in November 1931. The new factory placed a very personal accent on contemporary artistic glass production on Murano: while designs prior to the Second World War were generally still the responsibility of master glassblowers themselves, after the war designers and freelance artists increasingly determined production. Giulio Radi began experimenting in 1940, obtaining the company's signature chromatic effects by superimposing mould-blown layers of glass, often opaque and transparent in alternation, and inlaying them with gold and silver foil. This latest volume of Marc Heireman's ongoing Murano manufactory books features over 800 design drawings, numerous archive images and new photos of AVEM masterpieces, making this anthology of the company's history indispensable for all Murano glass lovers.

Arnoldsche Courtly Companions: Pugs and Other Dogs in

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn the 18th century pugs found their way onto the laps of noblewomen and, with this, into the portraits of contemporary rulers. Small and forever panting, the pug could not be put to use as a watchdog or a herding dog, but it compensated for this with its charm. The dog ultimately found its way onto porcelain and faience. Johann Joachim Kändler, the most significant modeler of the Meissen porcelain manufactory, designed over 60 variants of the pug between 1740 and 1760 - standing, lying, scratching, and performing tricks. Kändler portrayed the pug belonging to Count Heinrich von Brühl in a splendid one-off, but he also produced models for serial production. This southern German collection comprises over 150 ceramic pugs as well as other dogs. Moreover, they do not just appear individually; they may also be part of a courtly scene or decorate wares in the gallant style - accessories such as flacons, (snuff) boxes, and walking-stick handles. Book SynopsisIn addition to her life's work in ceramic art, the artist, gallerist and collector Lotte Reimers (b. 1932) has compiled a fascinating collection of applied art from other disciplines. With 132 objects, Die Sprache der Dinge (The Language of Things) presents jewellery, metal and textile design, leather- and woodwork, paper art, and one-offs in glass. The collection, which has grown over decades, reflects Lotte Reimers' own unique collecting style: aside from personal taste, quality in form and craftsmanship is an essential criterion for inclusion. The things themselves enter a polyphonic and exciting dialogue in their multiplicity and individuality. Die Sprache der Dinge is an invitation to all aficionados of applied art to enter Lotte Reimers' world of collecting. Text in German.

Arnoldsche Young-Jae Lee: Das Grün in den Schalen

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisSince 2006 Young-Jae Lee (b. 1951), the head of the ceramic workshop Margaretenhöhe Essen, has been creating her Spinatschalen (Spinach Bowls) – round-bodied vessels on simple standing rings, whose diverse glazes bring out the aesthetic appeal of these impressive dishes. Behind the purist form of Lee's bowls lies a long history stretching back to Korean vessels of the Goryeo dynasty (918–1392) by way of Japanese tea bowls. This publication reveals much more than just the genesis of the Spinatschalen; it unlocks a piece of ceramic history. Negotiating the complex historical and cultural relationships between Japan and Korea against which the tea bowls evolved, it uses examples from Museum Folkwang to also illustrate the German reception of East Asian ceramic vessels at the dawn of the 20th century. • Doris Bank: Table Art in Stoneware and Porcelain

Arnoldsche Doris Bank: Table Art in Stoneware and Porcelain

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisThe works in porcelain and colourful shades of stoneware by Doris Banks might be modest and reduced in form, colour, and decoration yet they still possess a remarkable impact and presence. All the objects are one-offs - modelled, formed, pressed, folded, glazed, and decorated by hand. As a result, the natural character of the material remains vivid. With a minimalist aesthetic beholden to Asia, the ceramic artist’s works are characterised by a virtuoso play of form and surface that allows a tactile experience of textures on the exterior surface. This monograph is an in-depth appraisal not only of these works but also of an artist who despite her early death achieved remarkable things in studio ceramics. Text in English and German.

Arnoldsche Unearthed: Twentieth-Century Ceramic Art from

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn a country known for its lively azulejos (tiles) and clay crafts, local studio pottery in Portugal has remained practically unknown, yet throughout the last century, a considerable number of potters and visual artists — from Portugal as well as Germany, Hungary, and Mozambique, among other countries — have created an original corpus of work. Based on what is probably the most comprehensive collection of local ceramic art, this publication discusses with greater detail 30 potters’ work and is illustrated with over 300 ceramics. It covers the entire 20th century, but gives particular emphasis to the 1950s and 1960s, when there was a boom in interest for the discipline, and when both state and private patrons commissioned significant artworks. This is the first seminal study of such an eclectic production, aiming to become a standard reference for the general public, collectors, and museum curators.

Book SynopsisHeidi Kippenberg studied ceramics under Walter Popp, the legendary teacher at the Kassel Art Academy whose avant-garde work opened up new dimensions of form and expression for ceramic vessels. She internalised the aesthetic of Popp’s vessels and simultaneously gave them her own distinctive touch. Strongly twisted, thick-walled, sometimes mounted stoneware vessels, further enlivened by thick monochrome glazes and augmented with sign-like contrasting glazed accents, characterise her oeuvre. Later she was inspired by East Asian ceramics and began to build her vessels, assembling them from slabs, giving their surfaces a lively structure, and transforming them into decorative landscapes. An oeuvre spanning more than half a century can be admired! Text in German. Published to accompany an exhibition at Brutto Gusto, Berlin, between 10 September and 30 October 2021.

The Shimmerman Collection’s focus on groups of town criers and artisans provides a fresh look at the creation, production, and distribution of Meissen porcelain. Book SynopsisThe global porcelain scene is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the International Ceramics Fair and Seminar, which was founded by Brian Haughton and his wife, Anna, in London in 1982. That was just the beginning: further fairs and accompanying symposia on design, jewellery, and antiques in New York and Dubai were to follow, becoming important venues of exchange, not just for trade but for the academic world too. To mark this anniversary, more than 40 renowned scholars were asked to write about selected European ceramics that had been traded in Brian Haughton’s gallery and that he had been particularly passionate about. This publication is a wonderful kaleidoscope of unique ceramics from the 18th and 19th centuries, released as a homage to Brian Haughton, The Man with the Butterfly Tie. Book SynopsisIn 1924, five young Italians founded the Studio Ars et Labor Industrie Riunite (S.A.L.I.R.) with the aim of modernising the ancient art of glass-decorating: Giuseppe D’Alpaos, Decio Toso, Guglielmo Barbini, Dino Martens, and Gino Francesconi. In 1928, the emergence of Franz Pelzel, a Bohemian glass engraver, and Guido Balsamo Stella, an all-round artist, marked the start of the production for which S.A.L.I.R. is most remembered today: contemporary glass-engraving. After Balsamo Stella’s departure in 1932, Franz Pelzel took the lead role of designer, occasionally also executing designs by other reputed artists. Based on the factory’s archives, Marc Heiremans illustrates the artistic evolution of S.A.L.I.R. through numerous drawings and period photographs. As well as being a catalogue raisonné, it is also an in-depth study shedding light on paramount developments in Murano’s glass-making history.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe catalogue Tunnel presents works from 2018 to 2023 by ceramicist Johannes Nagel (*1979). The majority of the objects were formed by the artist’s hands digging into sand to form cavities, negative spaces, which were then molded and revealed using liquid porcelain. By doing this, says co-author Esther Niebel, the artist imprints his own presence in to the objects. In addition to the extraordinary shapes thus created, expressive colours and the painting of the objects play a central role in Nagel’s work. Accompanied by essays, the excavated and cast pieces are presented in full-page photographs in a staccato portrayal of objects and ideas. Text in English and German.

Book SynopsisThe Frenchman Claude Champy (*1944) brings together man and the cosmos in his ceramics. In his studio, mechanical, geological, and chemical processes fuse to form a ceramic total work of art - guided by the barely visible yet influential human gesture. Despite the ceramicist wishing to capture the great forces of the universe in his work, he consciously consigns this part to trial and error, to an intentional loss of control, relying instead on the inherent logic of the material and fire. In Stardust Champy permits insights into his studio practice, his more recent artworks, and his work philosophy by providing commentary on his own sculptures and having them contextualised by experts. What results is a personal book on a unique artist, a retrospective on an oeuvre that is as powerful as it is elemental. Text in English and French.

Book SynopsisIn the 1950s, a large number of internationally renowned artists created pictures made of ceramic. In 1956, in close collaboration with the artist and ceramicist Richard Bampi, Julius Bissier developed a ceramic work for the University of Freiburg. The abstract composition on a wall in the city centre measures over 19.5 metres long by 2.6 metres high (64 × 8.5 feet). Its restoration and relaunch is occasion to examine more closely the story of its genesis. The distinctiveness of the artwork becomes clear against a backdrop of the cultural politics oriented on France in Freiburg after 1945. Unexpected parallels in contemporaneous ceramic murals by Fernand Léger, Joan Miró, and Victor Vasarely are revealed and make the Freiburg ceramic picture a unique work in the post-war art of Germany. Book SynopsisElisabeth von Krogh (b. 1947) has been a prominent figure in the field of ceramics in Norway for several decades. Her works have been acquired by numerous Norwegian collections, and her artistic oeuvre is well-known even beyond the art world. Describing von Krogh's works without resorting to what are often deemed clichés is challenging. How does one articulate that something is simultaneously playful and colourful yet serious and complex? The works' duality is their strength, and the term playful' referring to a beneficial and civilised aspect of humanity assumes a new dimension in her realm. Play, like ceramics, is one of the few arenas where both body and mind are simultaneously challenged. This is the first comprehensive monograph on Elisabeth von Krogh. A retrospective of the last 50 years that opens up to the prospective of playful utopian spaces.Text in English and Norwegian.

  • Ceramics of Chios 17th–19th century: Angelos

Kapon Editions Ceramics of Chios 17th–19th century: Angelos

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe core of this volume is the collection of Chian pithoi and pithos lids belonging to Angelos Vlastaris. The book also contains important ceramics from other collections, as well as a wealth of archive material. Its scope is not limited to the study of the pottery alone; it also aims to present a tangible picture of the great cultural and social flowering of Chios before the Massacre of 1822. The ceramics presented here were crafted in recent centuries but touch upon a medieval past. Their crude construction, their shape and their decoration are all features of Byzantine pithoi, attesting to an unbroken ceramic tradition. Their technical and morphological features indicate a standardised technological chaîne opératoire and a specific way of learning the craft. What is striking is the plethora of inscriptions, dates, Christian symbols and decorative motifs found on them. These ceramics express the general outward-looking spirit, the cultural and religious freedom of the period. Proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to a non-profit institution for the study and promotion of modern Greek ceramics. Published jointly by the John S. Fafalios Foundation and Kapon Editions. Substantially illustrated in colour and black & white. The text is presented in both Greek and English.

  • Toni Zuccheri: Poet of Nature and Glass

Marsilio Toni Zuccheri: Poet of Nature and Glass

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe first book on the magical creations of postwar Italian glass virtuoso Toni Zuccheri Toni Zuccheri (1936–2008) was an artist, architect, designer and sculptor. He collaborated with some of the biggest names in postwar Italian art (Gio Ponti, Lucio Fontana and Gaetano Pesce, among others) and worked for some of the most prestigious glass brands in Italy (Venini, VeArt and Barovier), developing new materials and forms in a glassmaking career of nearly half a century. A decade after his death, this volume presents an exhaustive overview of Zuccheri’s career, looking at his complex and fruitful encounters with designers and brands and his extensive independent production of unique works modeled after animals. Featuring illustrations of Zuccheri’s prototypes and one-off pieces plus unpublished sketches, studies and drawings, archival material and letters, Toni Zuccheri reveals the complex sensibility of a designer who took an empirical approach to sculpting “sensitive things.”

Book Synopsis"Ritsue Mishima was born in Kyoto, Japan in 1962. She worked as a stylist in advertising and with interior design magazines, eventually focusing on floral installations. In 1996, after moving to Venice, Italy, she began working with glass and collaborating with murano craftsmen. Mishima was the first recipient of the Giorgio Armani prize for best artist at Sotheby's contemporary decorative arts exhibition in London in 2001. Two years later, she attracted attention with her striking installation at the Milano Salone. Mishima was recently included in the 2009 Venice biennial, which deemed her one of the "most interesting artists on the international glass scene". Combining the craft of local glassblowers, minerals and fire, Mishima forms glass in a race against time, pulling everything together and growing shapes from the inside out. She looks to the natural world to create pieces of delicate, organic nature that are infused with spiritual and physical energy. She also draws inspiration through looking back at historic Venetian glassworks but unlike many Venetian glass artists who see themselves as decorative sculptors, Mishima is determined to produce works that are genuinely useful. Glassworks by Mishima are colourless and transparent, giving the sensations of pureness and luminosity. They capture and release the light and surrounding colors, creating perfect harmony with their contexts. Her work is very powerful, yet supremely elegant.
