  • Formula 1 Car by Car 1980 - 1989

Evro Publishing Formula 1 Car by Car 1980 - 1989

Book SynopsisThis book is the third in Evro’s multi-volume, decade-by-decade series covering the entire history of Formula 1 through its teams and cars. This instalment examines the 1980s, when the sport moved into its spectacular turbo era, first with Renault, Ferrari and BMW-powered Brabham, then with sustained periods of success for McLaren with Porsche-made TAG engines and Williams with Honda power. After the last win for the evergreen Ford Cosworth DFV in 1983, turbos prevailed until regulation change for 1989 brought back normally aspirated engines, now of 3.5 litres. Besides Formula 1’s high achievers, this book also covers the entire supporting cast, where much curiosity lies in discovering the travails of obscure and unsuccessful cars. This wide-ranging, colourful and authoritative book will be treasured by all Formula 1 fans

The son of wealthy parents, educated at Rugby and Cambridge, Seaman grew up in a privilegeTrade Review'Timely, vivid and enthralling in its close-up view of a world of heroes, Richard Williams’ splendid book corrects the many myths that cling to Dick Seaman’s name. Was he buried sitting upright in the car in which he died? Did his overbearing English mother light up the family’s ancestral home to guide Nazi pilots through the night? Williams has found a subject worthy of his rare combination of technical knowledge with compelling story-telling. It’s unputdownable.' -- Miranda Seymour * Author of The Bugatti Queen *'One of the greatest motor racing stories, about one of the greatest but least celebrated British drivers from an era that produced perhaps the most awesome - certainly the most fearsome - racing cars of all time, the original Silver Arrows.' -- Nick Mason'A fascinating story...as you'd expect from one of the finest sports writers of our lifetime, Williams advances our understanding of the subject by elegantly weaving a narrative that combines the Boy's Own derring-do of a between-the-wars hero with the suffocatingly stuffy expectations of British society...Gives you all the detail a purist would want from a racing biography, but it's also an easy-to-read yet fascinating social documentary of the era. -- Marcus Simmons * Autosport *'A tragic age and a tragic character, both seemingly compelled to destroy themselves...a chilling reminder of how little control we have over our fates' -- Damon Hill'To read A Race with Love and Death...is to smell the petrol that frequently caused conflagrations as cars burst into flame from leaks and collisions. Williams is the right man to tell [Seaman's story] - a fine sports writer.' -- Matt Dickinson * The Times *'Readers...will be familiar with the elegance of his prose and the breadth of his interests and expertise. All are on show here.' -- Sam Wollaston * Guardian *‘Richard Williams has written wonderful books…but this latest one tops them all for drama, insight and casting fresh light on old events.’ -- Colin Overland * Car *‘The gifted sports writer – Richard Williams recounts Seaman’s story vividly and with aplomb, ably calculating the spirit of the age.’ * GP Racing *‘The story of ‘Britain’s First Great Grand Prix Driver’ is expertly chronicled in A Race with Love and Death as journalist Richard Williams re-evaluates the speedster’s life and legacy.’ * The Sportsman *'Richard Williams’ charming account of Seaman’s life, will help...remind others of a time in Grand Prix racing when with grievous regularity...the fast died young and died often.' -- Michael Moritz * Financial Times *'Richard Williams – one of our most elegant sportswriters – has written a biography of Seaman that seeks to remind us of his unfairly expunged sporting achievements...once Seaman’s career takes off and he participates in bigger, more fully documented events, Williams’s gift for bringing a race to life in all its excitement comes into its own. He is a wonderfully lucid writer, and a sort of anti-Murray Walker in that he never tries to artificially ramp up the tension.' -- Jake Kerridge * Daily Telegraph *'Williams writes like a novelist, vividly creating scenes in order to swing the spotlight on a character who should perhaps have been remembered in the same way as Mike Hawthorn...It makes of a compelling read.' * Classic Cars *'Williams provides the contextual sensitivity that takes a lifetime to acquire... [His] research is nothing short of incredible... A remarkable and moving account, one that places you in every room with Dick, told with reason – matter of factly, rather than chasing sensationalism.' * Classic & Sports Car *'Williams skilfully and gently lays out the nuances of a life that ended violently... As it is, this exhaustively researched and immaculately written book can only feed such fascinating but ultimately sad speculation.' -- Maurice Hamilton * Sport 500 *

Book Synopsis'The story of Brawn GP is legendary... Exciting and magical.' Damon HillForeword by Bernie Ecclestone____________________________The full story of F1's incredible 2009 championship battle has never been told. Until now.At the end of 2008, Nick Fry, then head of Honda's F1 team, was told by his Japanese bosses that the motor company was pulling out of F1. In response, Nick and chief engineer Ross Brawn persuaded Honda to sell them the company for £1 - a gamble that would take the team all the way to winning the 2009 Driver's and the Constructor's Championship with a borrowed engine, a heavily adapted chassis and, at least initially, no sponsors.Giving the inside track on the drivers, the rivalries, on negotiating with Bernie Ecclestone and on hiring and working with global superstars Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton, Survive. Drive. Miranda Seymour, Literary Review10 June 1907, Peking. Five cars set off in a desperate race across two continents on the verge of revolution. An Italian prince and his chauffeur, a French racing driver, a conman and various journalists battle over steep mountain ranges and across the arid vastness of the Gobi Desert. The contestants need teams of helpers to drag their primitive cars up narrow gorges, lift them over rough terrain and float them across rivers. Petrol is almost impossible to find, there are barely any roads, armed bandits and wolves lurk in the forests. Updates on their progress, sent by telegram, are eagerly devoured by millions in one of the first ever global news stories. Their destination: Paris. More than its many adventures, the Peking-to-Paris provided the impetus for profound change. The world of 1907 is poised between the old and the new: communist regimes will replace imperial ones in China and Russia; the telegraph is transforming modern communication and the car will soon displace the horse. In this book bestselling author Kassia St Clair traces the fascinating stories of two interlocking races - setting the derring-do (and sometimes cheating) of one of the world's first car races against the backdrop of a larger geopolitical and technological rush to the future, as the rivalry grows between countries and empires, building up to the cataclysmic event that changed everything - the First World War. Author Geoff Tibballs has gathered together this absorbing collection of stories from over a century of motor racing around the world, including the Frenchman who drove 25 miles in reverse, the Grand Prix in which the leading drivers were so far ahead that they stopped for a meal in the pits, the Le Mans 24-hour race won by a car patched up with chewing gum, and the driver who drank six bottles of champagne – virtually one per pit-stop – on the way to winning the Indianapolis 500. Book SynopsisSix victories, two pole positions, eight fastest laps and 13 podium places - statistics that are anything but striking. In Formula 1 today, there are drivers who have won a great deal more, but Gilles Villeneuve cannot be evaluated by numbers alone - simply because there is no way of measuring the level of excitement that he brought to racing. Even though he has been dead for over 30 years, the legend of the Canadian, who was killed on 8 May 1982, is still imbued with strong emotion - Gilles the "Aviator" as Enzo Ferrari nick-named him, the driver for whom the expression "Villeneuve Fever" was coined. From his "crazy flight" at Fuji in 1977, his first GP win at home in Canada in 1978, the unforgettable 1979 season followed by a year of purgatory, his epic success at Monaco in 1981 and the in-house duel with Didier Pironi at Imola in 1982, to that last "crazy flight" at Zolder. "Gilles Villeneuve: Immagini di una vita/A life in pictures" relives the legend, with previously unpublished pictures and authoritative text by Mario Donnini.

Starting as a youth with incredible skill, young Stirling Moss quickly caught the eye when racing the 500cc cars invented just after the WWII. Book SynopsisThe amazing and dramatic story of Bill Lester, one of the most well-known NASCAR drivers in history—and a pioneer whose determination and spirit has paved the way for a new generation of racers.Winning in Reverse tells the story of Bill Lester whose love for racing eventually compelled him to quit his job as an engineer to pursue racing full time. Blessed with natural talent, Bill still had a trifecta of odds against him: he was black, he was middle aged, and he wasn’t a southerner. Bill Lester rose above it all, as did his rankings, and he made history time and time again, becoming the first African American to race in NASCAR’s Busch Series, the first to participate in the Nextel Cup and the first to win a Pole Position start in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. Whether you are contemplating a career or lifestyle change, challenging social norms, or struggling against prejudice or bigotry, Winning in Reverse is a story for sports fans and readers everywhere about the power of perseverance in the face of adversity.Trade Review“I remember racing with Bill Lester for the first time in 1998. Being unfamiliar with the name, I assumed he was a long time journeyman road racer who was looking for a new challenge in stock cars. Turns out his journey was anything but typical. Deciding to become a professional stock car driver in your 40s is next to impossible. In the pages of this book you’ll learn Bill is a determined enthusiastic individual whose passion to succeed made the impossible a reality.” -- Dale Earnhardt Jr."Motorsports—an industry where you won’t find much color. Being Black in NASCAR, you have to have the talent. You also have to have thick skin. You are already looked at with many more eyes expecting immediate success no matter the equipment or circumstances you’re in. As soon as you don’t perform, youre opportunity is immediately labeled as a handout, based solely off the color of your skin. When your time comes, you have to be twice as ready to seize and capitalize on the task in front of you. Bill Lester embodies this, and reveals his struggle and triumph in this book." -- Bubba Wallace"Bill Lester's story is instructive for any person at any age to understand that when we have a deeply embedded passion, it is never too late to make it come to fruition. I strongly believe there are many people in this world who have been waiting for this book at this moment in their lives!" -- Roland S. Martin, host/managing editor, #RolandMartinUnfiltered Daily Digital Show"Bill Lester is a trailblazer. Like many who brave the front lines, he had to take risks. He lived his childhood dream, but he had to persevere to succeed in a sport that had few people of color and a reputation for being unwelcoming to African Americans. Winning in Reverse is his story of his achievement. In spite of adversity and tremendous odds stacked against him, Lester's hard work and tenacity served him well. Readers facing similar hurdles will gain motivation from the pages of his book too. Winning in Reverse is an invaluable tool for those looking for a guide to the winner's circle." -- Ed Gordon, broadcast journalist and author of CONVERSATIONS IN BLACK“[An] affecting memoir… Lester’s inspirational story of resilience in the face of daunting obstacles wins big.” * Publishers Weekly *"Since his retirement, the iconic racer has used his large platform to represent auto racing, businesses, and the black community in engaging in and helping bring an end to racial injustice... A recommended read for many, this book will make you believe that your dreams are so much more than 'what-if' scenarios." * Racing Refresh *

Book Synopsis"In many respects it is a book unlike many others. It is an individual, as all good books should be. It is quirky, eclectic, eccentric even, but in a world intent on reproducing that which has already been regurgitated I personally felt the need for something a bit more idiosyncratic, I can only hope that you agree!" - Simon Owen A well known artist specialising in racing car subjects, the late Simon Owen's detailed, expertly executed work conveys the life, the vibrancy, the essence and passion of motorsports and racing cars, like no other. Simon's work is a visual feast for lovers of automotive art and motorsport. Over the last few years, Simon had worked on developing a series of stunningly detailed computer-generated digital images, focussing on individual racing cars and their liveries. Seventy-seven of these images have been compiled to create this extraordinary book, and each is presented with a relevant quote from a legend of the motor racing world. Along with these beautiful and unique artworks, this book represents a chance to gain a rare peek into the artist's working methods, revealing some of his developmental work and showing how the digital images were constructed.Trade ReviewNot only is there Owen's artwork on each subject but a lovely touch featuring a quote from one of the main protagonists involved with the vehicle in period. A charming book when first published in 2014, and it has lost non of its charm during the intervening four years. If you missed it first time round then this lovely paperback version should be grabbed. - tkc. Simon Owen's passion for racing - as well as his considerable artistic talent - is lauded in this compact Veloce paperback. It comprises some 200 pages of iconic liveries - all produced on computer, but far from lacking in feel. Each is accompanied by a quote relating to a driver, vehicle or key race - which makes it all rather charming. - Classic & Sports Car. It isn't a history book, although it covers a wide spectrum of racing history. The quotes are at once hooks to draw you in, as well as being thought provoking, bringing home the passion, exhilaration and grief in motor racing. The images show that although things change, some things still remain the same - across the 90 years of motor racing covered, all cars still have a race number, are still identified in the same way. The introduction says that they book is a reflection of the perception of the author, so as a memorial it has achieved what it intended. - www.silhouet.com. No run-of-the-mill motoring art book, this. The pictures on every alternate page of this compact publication are far from what you'd expect from a conventional racing book on racing cars. These are computer generated, full of close-up images of notable racing cars throughout the history of the sport. The majority are views looking down on the nose of each car, while some are side views of the bodywork and in the case of cars from an earlier era, heads-on views of their radiators. They're all the same size and in every case on the right-hand page, each view being accompanied, on the facing page, by quotes and anecdotes from drivers and personalities involved with each car. The images are so realistic that it's hard to believe they are computer generated. – Speedscene.

Book SynopsisF1 Mavericks is the story of the grandest, most influential, and most fondly remembered era in Formula 1 racing as seen through the lens of master motorsports photographer, Pete Biro. The period from 1960 to 1982 saw the greatest technological changes in the history of Formula 1 racing: the transition from front engines to rear engines, narrow-treaded tires, massive racing slicks, zero downforce, and neck-wrenching ground effects—and, of course, a staggering increase in performance and reduction in lap times. David & Charles Competition Car Composites: a Practical Handbook

Book SynopsisComposites have been around since ancient civilisations began making bricks from clay and straw. Glass fibre, carbon fibre and aramid fibres - to name but three - are recent innovations, yet today there are few competition cars that don't have at least some components made out of one or more of these materials. However, while it is well known that glass fibre technology can be used in the home workshop, what may not be so widely realised is that more advanced fibres also lend themselves to DIY methods. This revised edition of Competition Car Composites starts by examining the materials and methods that can be used, explaining basic 'wet' and 'dry' laminating techniques, pattern making and mould construction, and the design and manufacture of components. It then goes on to cover material and technology upgrades, and how more advanced materials can be exploited to achieve improved properties and reduced weight. The use of thermoplastic materials, resin infusion methods, and, especially, 'pre-pregs' in the home workshop, are also discussed, as are the composite techniques used by top racecar constructors.Table of ContentsChapter 1 MaterialsChapter 2 Equipment and basic techniquesChapter 3 Pattern makingChapter 4 Making mouldsChapter 5 Component manufactureChapter 6 Material upgradesChapter 7 Technology upgradesChapter 8 Pre-pregs and relativesChapter 9 The professionalsChapter 10 Some case studiesAppendix 1 Useful contactsAppendix 2 Further readingGlossary of terms and abbreviationsIndex

Book SynopsisWhile the demonstrations of Spring 1968 all around the world were not the playing field of DPPI’s (Diffusion Presse Photo International) photographers, the latter happily continued to flourish in the extraordinary world of motor racing, the atmosphere of which they captured to perfection. Their purpose was both to translate into images impressions like the frightening average speed per lap of 243 km/hr of the Belgian Grand Prix on the Spa-Francorchamps track or the clearance, complete with major skidding, of a snow-covered pass during the Monte-Carlo Rally, and to serve as complicit witnesses to the mixture of tension and freedom that inhabits these men and women of the racing world who gathered each weekend to share triumph and tragedy. It comes as no surprise that such a concentration of action and emotion made a strong impression on the public and inspired brands and emerging marketing services seeking new channels of communication. Evro Publishing Quattro: The Race and Rally Story: 1980-2004

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe word 'Quattro', chosen by Audi for its pioneering high-performance four-wheel-drive cars, immediately captures glamour and excitement in the minds of all motorsport enthusiasts. This book, written by a leading journalist and Quattro devotee, explores 24 years of factory-prepared and factory-supported Quattros in motorsport, from 1980 to 2004. It is a tale that extends from rough rally stages to race tracks, from pine-fringed ice trails in the depths of European winters to the shimmering heat haze and melting asphalt of Texas street racing. Along the way, it explains how Quattros collected four world rally championships, five American driver/manufacturer crowns and a single-year haul of seven international touring car titles, plus numerous other honours. With the five-cylinder turbocharged Quattro in its original form, rallying in the early years yielded numerous wins, most of all in 1982, when seven victories in 11 world championship rallies brought the first title. With the short-wheelbase Sport added to Audi's armoury, 1984 became an all-action, all-conquering rallying season with two more world titles won, for drivers (Stig Blomqvist) and manufacturers. Three stunning Pike's Peak wins were achieved in America in successive years, for Michele Mouton (1985), Bobby Unser (1986) and Walter Roehrl (1987). Starting with double championships for the 200 quattro in TransAm (1988) and the 90 Quattro in IMSA (1989), racing success unfolded in America. Exuberant Hans Stuck was the star driver, but consistent team-mate Hurley Haywood captured that 1988 title. Touring car campaigns during the 1990s brought huge success, starting with fearsome V8 Quattro 'racing limos' in Germany. Global achievements followed with A4 Quattros in many national Super Touring series throughout Europe and in Australia, including Frank Biela's 1996 title-winning campaign in Britain. Audi continued to win on track in the new millennium as race versions of the S4 and RS6 captured five SCCA GT Championship titles in America.
