John Wiley & Sons Just Fodder The Ethics of Feeding Animals
Book SynopsisJust Fodder addresses ethical and political questions arising from thinking about animals as eaters rather than as foodstuffs. Josh Milburn offers a novel theory of animal rights that insists that figuring out the full range of our obligations to animals requires asking questions about the nature and circumstances of our relationships with them.Trade Review“[Just Fodder] brings a significant and imperative contribution for animal advocates (and/or activists), social scientists, philosophers and other academic sectors parties to think about and understand the animal-human relationship from a broader point-of-view. For animal lovers, animal activists or animal advocates who have (or don't have) relationships with animals, it is worth reading this book and thinking more profoundly about the ethical questions raised by the author.” The Vegan Society“Just Fodder paves the way for a new road of enquiry into a topic that is not itself new at all: we have been directly or indirectly impacting on animals’ diets for millennia. That philosophers—to say nothing of political theorists—have largely failed to seriously address the ethics of feeding animals is likely a reflection of how they have, until relatively recently, failed to take animal ethics in general seriously.* Just Fodder*—beyond being itself a lucid and thoughtful account of an important topic—is therefore a heartening indication of the current state of animal ethics, and an exciting sign of the inquiries still to come.” *Journal of Moral Philosophy *“The book is a very valuable contribution to a debate that we must eventually have in our societies.” Daily Philosophy“That philosophers—to say nothing of political theorists—have largely failed to seriously address the ethics of feeding animals is likely a reflection of how they have, until relatively recently, failed to take animal ethics in general seriously. Just Fodder—beyond being itself a lucid and thoughtful account of an important topic—is therefore a heartening indication of the current state of animal ethics, and an exciting sign of the inquiries still to come.” *Contemporary Political Theory *

MO - University of Illinois Press Labors Cold War
Book Synopsis Examining the impact of American Cold War politics on disparate local arenas,Labor''s Cold Warreveals that anticommunist challenges reshaped local political cultures and set the stage for new rounds of political debate. The contributors demonstrate that the anticommunist movement was more diverse, more pervasive, and more sharply and creatively contested than historians have realized. Yet workers and their allies defended ongoing progressive politics at the local level. Examples include fights for fair employment and public housing; the expansion of New Deal-style regional development; the abolition of racial and ethnic discrimination policies; and workplace policies from the right to organize to a voice in wage and price controls. Local political stories from New Mexico, California, occupied Japan, Milwaukee, Detroit, St. Louis, and Schenectedy provide important alternative perspectives on the transformative power of anticommunism in the postwar period and contribTrade Review "Labor's Cold War provides a valuable and timely historical reinterpretation that goes to the roots of the Cold War as it affected the American labour movement and its allies."--Labour/Le Travail "The emphasis on the interconnections between local and national themes makes this book a genuinely unique and compelling addition to labor literature. As such, it removes issues related to labor and the left from the internecine workplace and union struggles and moves them to the more interesting arena of local social and economic policies."--Stephen Meyer, author of Stalin over Wisconsin: The Making and Unmaking of Militant Unionism, 1900-1950Table of ContentsContributors include Kenneth Burt, Robert W. Auckland University Press Globalisation and the Wealth of Nations:
Book SynopsisThis book is a clear, imaginative and wide-ranging picture of the globalising world, written for a general educated readership. It is not an argument for or against globalisation but a careful and thorough analysis of the issues involved, drawing on scholarly study and debate but avoiding technical issues and demanding detail. Organised in two parts, it explores the economic theory behind globalisation, then the political and social consequences and concludes with the various options for nations in a globalised world. Distinctive in setting globalisation in a historical context also inteprets it from the point of view of a small, rich economy. In each section individual chapter focus on a particular historical experience, typically in a single country; for example, a chapter on cities and industry economies of scale focuses on New York; one on technology transfer focuses on Japan; one on nationalism focuses on Germany.

Springer International Publishing AG Gunnar Myrdal
Book SynopsisThis book offers a comprehensive exploration of Gunnar Myrdal's life, as well as his significant scientific, political and international contributions. Recognized as one of the foremost Stockholm economists, Myrdal, alongside Keynes, played a pivotal role in revolutionizing economic theory during the 1930s. Together with his wife, Alva Myrdal, he was instrumental in shaping the Swedish welfare state. Gunnar Myrdal was far ahead of his time in demonstrating that both a strong state and a vibrant civil society are essential for developing an inclusive welfare state. Myrdal's influence extended well beyond Sweden. His groundbreaking analysis of racial oppression in the United States, particularly in his seminal work An American Dilemma, is widely regarded as a landmark in the struggle for equal rights. During the Cold War, he played a key role in the United Nations' efforts to rebuild Europe and sought to bridge the divide between East and West. His penetrating examination of the causes of underdevelopment in Asian Dramamade a significant contribution to the understanding of prejudice and colonial oppression. This book traces Gunnar Myrdal's journey from his childhood to the Nobel Memorial Prize, detailing his intense collaboration with Alva and her eventual professional independence. It compellingly illustrates how he, with clear-eyed pragmatism and a steadfast commitment to his values, addressed both Swedish and global social challenges. Remarkably, many of the issues Myrdal grappled with remain deeply relevant today, including the cracks in Sweden's welfare society, racism in the United States, the rise of authoritarian regimes, and the re-emergence of a new Cold War. This book will particularly resonate with social scientists and general readers interested in the role of institutions in development, the motivations behind the inclusive welfare state, and the crucial importance of letting value premises guide research, policy solutions and actions on social issues, including identity, race, and power.

Springer Nature Switzerland AG Machine Learning in Finance: From Theory to
Book SynopsisThis book introduces machine learning methods in finance. It presents a unified treatment of machine learning and various statistical and computational disciplines in quantitative finance, such as financial econometrics and discrete time stochastic control, with an emphasis on how theory and hypothesis tests inform the choice of algorithm for financial data modeling and decision making. With the trend towards increasing computational resources and larger datasets, machine learning has grown into an important skillset for the finance industry. This book is written for advanced graduate students and academics in financial econometrics, mathematical finance and applied statistics, in addition to quants and data scientists in the field of quantitative finance. Machine Learning in Finance: From Theory to Practice is divided into three parts, each part covering theory and applications. The first presents supervised learning for cross-sectional data from both a Bayesian and frequentist perspective. The more advanced material places a firm emphasis on neural networks, including deep learning, as well as Gaussian processes, with examples in investment management and derivative modeling. The second part presents supervised learning for time series data, arguably the most common data type used in finance with examples in trading, stochastic volatility and fixed income modeling. Finally, the third part presents reinforcement learning and its applications in trading, investment and wealth management. Python code examples are provided to support the readers' understanding of the methodologies and applications. The book also includes more than 80 mathematical and programming exercises, with worked solutions available to instructors. As a bridge to research in this emergent field, the final chapter presents the frontiers of machine learning in finance from a researcher's perspective, highlighting how many well-known concepts in statistical physics are likely to emerge as important methodologies for machine learning in finance.Trade Review“This book is, however, a well-structured and self-contained graduate textbook on ML applications in finance. Exercises and some applications are included at the end of each chapter and the Python code used in this book makes use of the Python Tensor Flow library. This book could also serve as a useful reference book for researchers and practitioners in quantitative finance.” (Gilles Teyssière, Mathematical Reviews, February, 2023)“Each part is introduced with background information, examples of relevant practical applications, and references to the most recent scientific literature. … The book covers all essential areas of machine learning with relevance to quantitative finance. … An additional strong advantage of this book is the clear and consistent structure of its chapters. … Overall, the book covers multiple machine learning approaches with advanced technical exposition and is therefore especially suitable as an academic reference point, especially on Reinforcement Learning.” (Antoniya Shivarova, Financial Markets and Portfolio Management, Issue 35, 2021)“This volume aims to present a broad yet technical treatment of (ML) algorithms used by financial practitioners and scholars alike. … the book fills a large void. … This encourages reproducibility as well as learning by doing, which is highly appreciated.” (Guillaume Coqueret, Quantitative Finance, October 15, 2020)Table of ContentsChapter 1. Penny taught me so much about how to make these into really successful meetings and reading this book reminded me of all that and more. Penny is also the master of communicating in a clear and simple way, even though the subject matter is complex. I would have saved a lot of time and energy by reading this book! Even now, with several years' experience in virtual working, I found this book chock-full of useful tips and ideas that will help me to be far more effective going forward. I hope that this book will become a classic. It certainly deserves its space on my bookshelf as both a primer that I can lend to newbies and a very useful resource for me to use as I think through and address increasing the complexity of virtual working in multiple time zones in the world of work." * Emma Langman, Head of Talent working in International retail, Kuwait *"At a time of increasing globalization, virtual working is a very real challenge to organizations and to my own world of project, programme, portfolio and change management. Both the 24/7 global economy and mobile working without a permanent office means we have to find different but effective ways of working. We also need to find successful ways to collaborate and to build strong relationships, confidence and trust with clients and teams when we cannot meet face-to-face. Virtual Leadership helps to address and resolve these issues. Penny has a wonderfully engaging and straightforward way of writing, and her book looks across a range of sectors and situations for virtual working and virtual leadership. I certainly recommend Virtual Leadership to individuals and organizations grappling with the complexity of virtual working." * Sarah Coleman, Project, Programme and Change Consultant and Educator; author of Project Leadership *"What I love about this book is the richness of practical insights. Academic Studies Press The Kahans from Baku: A Family Saga
Book SynopsisThe Kahans from Baku is the saga of a Russian Jewish family. Their story provides an insight into the history of Jews in the Imperial Russian economy, especially in the oil industry. The entrepreneur and family patriarch, Chaim Kahan, was a pious and enlightened man and a Zionist. His children followed in his footsteps in business as well as in politics, philanthropy, and love of books. The book takes us through their forced migration in times of war, revolution, and the twentieth century’s totalitarian regimes, telling the story of fortune and misfortune of one cohesive family over four generations through Russia, Germany, Denmark, and France, and finally on to Palestine and the United States of America.Trade Review“Verena Dohrn’s book presents a complex transnational story of Jewish oil merchants in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, contributing to the growing scope of research on Jewish family businesses in East and Central Europe. … This book will be an interesting read for a broad audience, providing an intimate insight into the private life of oil magnates in turbulent historical times. It may also introduce a new perspective on Jewish business elites to academic readers. The Kahan story transcends the stereotypical divisions between East and West, showing the example of the well-managed business family corporation, which managed to integrate into a few imperial and national contexts of different countries and adapt to the new situations while preserving their complex cultural integrity.”— Vladyslava Moskalets, Business History“Jewish entrepreneurs played a major role in economic development in late Imperial Russia, and the oil barons of the Kahan family were among the most important. And the least studied—until 2018, when Verena Dohrn published her pioneering monograph in German, now being made available in English translation. The research is massive: the book uses family archives (with thousands of documents) as well as state repositories in fourteen countries, complemented by oral history and the contemporary press. All this allows Dohrn to provide a detailed narrative that explains how the family was able to thrive before the 1917 revolution and then to survive after its emigration to the West. Not only specialists but general readers will discover a rich narrative of this family’s everyday life and successful business activities.”—Gregory L. Freeze, Raymond Ginger Professor of History, Brandeis University“This fascinating family history takes the reader across countries and continents during the turbulent period of European wars and revolutions, from a small Belarusian shtetl to Baku, Moscow, Petrograd, Berlin, and then on to Tel Aviv and New York. The Kahans were successful entrepreneurs, generous philanthropists and cultural activists who left their mark on modern Jewish life and culture. Thoroughly researched and engagingly written by Verena Dohrn, a prominent German historian of Russian Jewry, this study is not only an important contribution to Jewish history and transnational diaspora studies, but also a captivating reading in its own right."—Mikhail Krutikov, University of MichiganTable of ContentsTable of ContentsAcknowledgementsPreface — Jonah Gavrieli In Memoriam Eli Rosenberg — Noa RosenbergTranslator’s Foreword — Uri Themal 1. Book Synopsis“A fascinating, exciting story.” — Sylvia Nasar, author of A Beautiful MindWhile still in his early 20s, and under Hitler's shadow, Leonid “Leo” Hurwicz (1917-2008) left his home in Warsaw, Poland, seeking safety and a degree at the London School of Economics. The following years, while challenging and potentially life-threatening, contained the seeds of a lifelong intellectual adventure. Leo's story is personal (born a refugee, precarious war years for himself and his Polish-Jewish family, a new life in America), global (revolutions, wars, depressions), ideological (socialism, capitalism, economic planning, free markets) and professional (a sixty-year career as a professor of economics leading ultimately to a Nobel Prize). This book tells his story.Trade Review“A fascinating, exciting story.” — Sylvia Nasar, author of A Beautiful Mind“Before he became an economist, Leo Hurwicz led a dramatic life worthy of a Hollywood movie. Michael Hurwicz tells this story with verve, and also succeeds in explaining to a lay readership the deep contributions his father made to economic science. Terrific reading.”— Eric Maskin, Nobel laureate in Economics, Harvard University“Kudos to Michael Hurwicz, who has written a paean to his late father, Leo Hurwicz, an extraordinary economist, teacher, polymath, and polyglot, whose genial personality and sense of humor endeared him to many in the profession. Especially for those of us who primarily knew Leo in an academic context, this book provides the background story of his life and times. It is meticulously researched and well-written.”— Samiran Banerjee, Teaching Professor of Economics at Emory University and editor of The Collected Papers of Leonid Hurwicz: Volume 1“Michael Hurwicz gives us a unique attempt to clarify, for all those who knew Leo Hurwicz, the complex history of his family. Many of us who knew Leo had only a fragmentary understanding of this story. Michael tells it with loving care. He then proceeds to interweave ideas from Leo's work and to show, with tenderness, aspects of Leo as a father. A remarkable achievement.”— Thomas Marschak, University of California, Berkeley, CA“Hurwicz tells the story of a remarkable man. A man, who received a Nobel Prize in Economics at age 90, who was married to the same woman, Evelyn, from age 27 until his death, who was the father of four children, who was an excellent pianist with a repertoire that reached from Beethoven to folk songs, an inspired — and inspiring — teller of bed-time stories, a life-long learner and knower of, almost, everything, an active citizen, and, yes, did I mention the Nobel Prize in Economics at age 90?And Leo Hurwicz achieved all of this in spite of — or should we say, because of — the times of existential peril through which he and his extended family lived. … It is a context of revolutions, wars, antisemitism, persecution, and genocide. But it is also a context of resistance, persistence, ingenuity, courage, and creativity, of humanity in the face of barbarism.”— Jens Kruse, The OrcasonianTable of ContentsAcknowledgementsPrologue 1939, sierpień/août/August Born a Refugee Now or Never Home Safe? Academic Studies Press The Coming of New Industrial Society: Reloaded
Book SynopsisThe book explores the effect of modern technological shifts on human society, showing that technologies are undergoing accelerating qualitative changes that open up new opportunities for personal development and satisfaction of wants and, simultaneously, engender risks associated with growing opportunities of human interference with nature and technogenic stress on the environment. Based on the study of cutting-edge technologies and resulting socioeconomic shifts, Bodrunov’s analysis outlines the shape of the civilizational crisis we face. It can only be overcome by founding a new industrial society of the second generation (if we consider the new industrial state described by J. K. Galbraith as the first generation) reliant on knowledge intensive material production and the gradual removal of humans from immediate material production.Trade Review“Sergey Bodrunov’s lively book addresses one of the most controversial consequences of liberal globalization—the deindustrialisation of the advanced capitalist states. Following the line of thinking of writers such as Clark Kerr and J.K. Galbraith, Bodrunov insists on the revival of industrialization and in doing so he makes advances on earlier theorizing. He insists that the development of civilization calls for a higher level of material production predicated on human knowledge and he anticipates much of current theorizing about the effects of artificial intelligence. In a provocative discussion, predicated on the experience of post-socialist Russia, he calls for positive economic policies to enhance the capabilities of modern economies to advance to higher levels of industrial development. The book will appeal to readers seeking solutions to modern economic problems through state coordination.”— David Lane, Emeritus Professor of Sociology, University of Cambridge, UK“As Marx, Veblen and John Kenneth Galbraith understood, human society co-evolves with its material and technological conditions, which fact has grave implications for those seduced by financialization or the post-industrial mirage. In The Coming New Industrial State: Reloaded, Sergey Bodrunov gives a fair—and sometimes harsh—portrait of modern Russia's fall into dependence on outside technologies, machines, and components. He advocates a path forward for Russia at the technical frontiers, with a mixed economy rooted in ‘an authentic culture’ without which, he writes, ‘there can be no effective industrial development.’ The war and sanctions may now catapult this analysis to the forefront.”— James K. Galbraith, The University of Texas at Austin, Member, Free Economic Society and Foreign Member, Russian Academy of Sciences“Sergey Bodrunov’s work is a major contribution to human knowledge, rooted both in his practical experience in Russian industry and government, and in revival of interest in the most profound issues in the philosophy of thought. It deserves the attention of everyone with an interest in innovation. But beyond that, anyone concerned with the rising challenge of new technologies should read it. At the center of The Coming New Industrial State lies the following proposition: until now, technology has driven society. The ‘information economy’ calls for a different relationship; it is society that must drive technology. Innovation, therefore, henceforth constitutes social innovation; a different way of organizing society. Bodronov not only poses the question, but provides much-needed answers.”— Alan Freeman, Geopolitical Economy Research Group, University of ManitobaTable of ContentsIntroductionPart One: Material Production and Industry: Technology, Labor, and ProductChapter 1: Production and Its Product: The Industrial Mode of ProductionChapter 2: The Service Industry, Material Production, and Their Correlation in the Modern EconomyPart Two: The Russian Economic System and (De)industrializationChapter 3: Industrialization of the Economy as a Factor of Social Development; The Phenomenon of Modern DeindustrializationChapter 4: Industrial Development in Russia: Lessons from the PastChapter 5: The Deindustrialization of Russia and the Challenges of ReindustrializationChapter 6: Techno-Economic Paradigms and the Renewal of the Russian Economy: The Political-Economic AspectChapter 7: The Russian Economic System: The Future of High-Tech Industrial ProductionPart Three: The New Industrial State v.2Chapter 8: The New Industrial State of the Twentieth CenturyChapter 9: The New Industrial State v.2: The Parameters of its GenesisPart Four: Reindustrialization, Import Substitution, and Active Industrial PolicyChapter 10: Technological Leadership and National SecurityChapter 11: Innovative Economic Development: Into NIS.2Chapter 12: Industrial Policy as a Tool of Reindustrialization and Import SubstitutionChapter 13: Imperatives, Opportunities, and Challenges of ReindustrializationChapter 14: The Revival of Production, Science, and Education: The Primary Priority of Modern Industrial PolicyChapter 15: NIS.2 as a Social SystemConclusion

Academic Studies Press Noonomy: The Trajectory of Global Transformation
Book SynopsisNoonomy explores the effect of modern technological shifts on human society. The author shows that technologies are about to undergo qualitative changes which will create new opportunities for personal development and the satisfaction of wants and, simultaneously, engender risks associated with growth opportunities of human interference with nature and technogenic stress on the environment. Based on the study of cutting-edge technologies and resulting socioeconomic shifts, Bodrunov makes the conclusion about the upcoming civilizational crisis. The crisis can be overcome through the formation of a new industrial society of the second generation reliant on knowledge-intensive material production and gradual removal of humans from immediate material production processes. These two trends can fully develop only subject to the transition from the current socioeconomic formation to a non-economic one–the noonomy.Table of ContentsForewordTo the Reader: A Door to the FutureThinkers Who Have Contributed to the Study of the Interconnections between Technological and Social Development Step One: Grasping RealityStep Two: Into the World of New TechnologiesStep Three: To the Threshold of Technological RevolutionStep Four: The New Industrial Society’s Second GenerationStep Five: Civilization at a CrossroadsStep Six: Nooindustrial ProductionStep Seven: Culture as an Economic ImperativeStep Eight: From Economy to NoonomyConclusion: The Path Towards Nootranformation

MO - University of Illinois Press Against Labor
Book Synopsis Against Labor highlights the tenacious efforts by employers to organize themselves as a class to contest labor. Ranging across a spectrum of understudied issues, essayists explore employer anti-labor strategies and offer incisive portraits of people and organizations that aggressively opposed unions. Other contributors examine the anti-labor movement against a backdrop of larger forces, such as the intersection of race and ethnicity with anti-labor activity, and anti-unionism in the context of neoliberalism. Timely and revealing, Against Labor deepens our understanding of management history and employer activism and their metamorphic effects on workplace and society. Contributors: Michael Dennis, Elizabeth Esch, Rosemary Feurer, Dolores E. Janiewski, Thomas A. Klug, Chad Pearson, Peter Rachleff, David Roediger, Howard Stanger, and Robert Woodrum.Trade Review"Boldly challenges the scholarship that considers employers as a malleable force that often compromises when social movements forge political environments that are inimical to their interests. Contributes enormously to our understanding of business tactics and strategy."--Immanuel Ness, author of Guest Workers and Resistance to U.S. Corporate Despotism"At a time when public sector unions are under renewed attack and private-sector union membership hovers near levels not seen since the early twentieth century, Against Labor offers a potent, powerful reminder that, as Feurer and Pearson put it, 'People, not faceless markets, shaped this story.'" --The Journal of Southern History"An excellent volume. The standard of scholarship and writing is very high, and the editors have worked hard to produce a cohesive collection of essays that shed much light on a still-understudied phenomenon in US and labor history more broadly."--Australasian Journal of American Studies"These essays make one thing quite clear: the existential threat that US unions currently face has been building for decades"--Social History"Recommended."--Choice"The respective chapters make for interesting reading. They raise fundamental issues concerning the long arc of industrial relations or labour history in America; of the long, unrelenting class-based campaign of employers and the various strategies and methods they have used to keep unions at bay and counter their attempts to improve the wages and working conditions of American workers."--Labour History"The decline of organized labor in recent decades is often attributed to globalization, financialization, and right-wing politics. But the compelling essays in this important volume show that the limits to workers’ collective power stem more basically from the concerted anti-union efforts of their employers dating back to the nineteenth century. Chronicling how capitalists have effectively forged a class-conscious social movement 'against labor,' these critical case studies make a vital contribution to the history of capitalism while illuminating the challenges facing workers today."--Jeffrey Sklansky, author of The Soul's Economy: Market Society and Selfhood in American Thought, 1820–1920
