De Gruyter Capital Structure and Shari’ah Compliance of

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the present financial world, various niche markets play an increasingly important role. One of the fastest-growing niches is, without a doubt, Islamic finance. Indeed, sustainable finance needs constantly evolving innovations, and this book offers valuable insights into Islamic capital structure and Shari’ah equity screening enriching academic discourse. "In recent years, we have witnessed the emergence of a new generation of academics and professionals specializing in various aspects of Islamic finance as knowledge and practice. This has brought about a new dynamism and also further sophistication. This book is one of such contributions, as it develops knowledge which is then transformed into practice whereby practical impact is also achieved. Being an academic book, it provokes readers’ thoughts, offering a critique of the implications of the currently applied Shari’ah screenings methodologies. As a transformative practical piece, by developing an innovative screening ratio, in this book, Dr. Yildirim extends his focus on the risk-sharing based financing hierarchy, covers thoughts and the underlying philosophy, and proposes an Islamic version of a pecking order hierarchy. This framework can be considered the foundation for developing an Islamic capital structure theory. This book will benefit academics, professionals, investors, as well as policymakers working in the Islamic finance industry and would like to explore more." (Professor Dr. Mehmet Asutay, Durham University Business School, UK) "This book offers, for the first time after the inception of Shari’ah screening methodologies, a groundbreaking new stock screening solution that is comprehensible, practical, and foremost entirely derived from the primary sources of Islam (Qur’an and Sunnah). Congratulations to Dr. Ramazan for his outstanding contribution to Islamic finance and capital markets." (Associate Professor Dr. Ahcene Lahsasna) "This excellent book is a must-have for all corporate finance students/researchers interested in the theoretical aspect of capital structure and the religious discussion of Shari’ah equity screening. This book should become a companion to those involved in a quantitative research environment and aim to conduct a comparative analysis; an ideal resource for everyone, from Shari’ah scholars to Islamic finance practitioners and beginners to experts." • De Gruyter Handbook of Entrepreneurial Finance

De Gruyter De Gruyter Handbook of Entrepreneurial Finance

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAs of early 2022, seven of the ten largest firms in the world by market capitalization had been funded through various types of entrepreneurial finance. This handbook provides an up-to-date survey of what we know about this significant phenomenon in all its forms, and where our knowledge about it needs to head from here. The handbook embraces a wide range of established and emerging academic and practitioner voices across the globe to explore the theoretical and practical flux and tension in the field. Until recently, most studies have taken a supply side perspective, focusing on the perspective of those who provide funding to new ventures. This book takes a different, demand side perspective, beginning with the entrepreneur and gradually broadening our view to include close by and then more distant funding sources. Following this approach, it is organized into four parts detailing the individual level (founders’ resources, bricolage and bootstrapping, effectuation and portfolio entrepreneurship); the inner circle (informal financing, business groups, incubators and accelerators); the wider world (formal debt, microfinance, venture capital, corporate venture capital, business angels, government funding and family offices); and emerging perspectives (non-Western perspectives, gender, indigenous perspectives, post-conflict and disaster zones and ethics). The introduction considers the general state of the field, while the conclusion takes on additional topics relevant to entrepreneurial finance, such as decentralized finance, big data, behavioral economics, financial innovation and COVID-19, as well as possible ways in which entrepreneurial finance can have a greater impact on other disciplines. This handbook will be a core reference work for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers seeking an up-to-date academic survey of entrepreneurial finance. It can also be used as a primary text in Ph.D. seminars in entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial finance, and finance. Instructors in Master’s level courses in entrepreneurial finance and venture capital will also find the book of benefit.

  • Disruptive Technologies in International

De Gruyter Disruptive Technologies in International

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisNew technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT), etc. are redefining business processes around the world at a rapid rate and resulting in both great opportunities and challenges for businesses. Though these technologies are extensively being used in developed countries, emerging economies are also not far behind. Disruptive Technologies in International Business advances the understanding of technological applications in business within an international paradigm. With its in-depth discussions of diverse topics such as the global value chain (GVC), environmental risk management, IoT, Surface Mobility, and anime, the book argues that technologies offer many advantages but there are accompanying risks, challenges, and disadvantages as well. The need of the hour is to address the impact of these technologies on the environment, society, and economy of the world. This book offers a collage of insights on how these technologies can potentially change the playing field in businesses and countries and contribute to the betterment of society. This book will provide business practitioners, international organizations, government officials, and policy makers with inspiration and new leads toward more efficient systems, policies, and operational frameworks in our increasingly technology-driven society. Table of Contents 1) New age technologies and disruption of globalization Technology is one of the key drivers of globalization. Recent advances such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, big data, and data analytics have revolutionized the international business landscape. This chapter will summarize how such breakthrough technologies have disrupted international business. Alka Maurya, Amity University, India, and Mark Munoz, Millikin University, USA 2) Smart contracts and international business Smart contracts are transforming international business operations. Blockchain based smart contracts facilitate international business operations by adding trust and transparency to transactions. This chapter evaluates how smart contracts are now increasingly being used by global companies to connect with their stakeholders and share vital information on a real time basis. Eve Man Hin CHAN, Technological and Higher Education Institute, Hong Kong 3) Technopoles, factories of the future and innovation districts: The socio-spatial reorganization of international business In order to meet the challenges of the global economy, many countries have resourced infrastructure development in the form of industrial corridors (for example, in India), and re-territorialization via megaregions (in China). Simultaneously, a significant reorganization of production is taking place by making use of new technologies, particularly AI, in technopoles, factories of the future and innovation districts. Cities and regions are witnessing the relocation to urban areas of advanced manufacturing and high tech corporate activity. Factories of the future in technopoles and innovation districts constitute new megaprojects that significantly alter the urban fabric and the socio-economic structure of entire neighborhoods. In turn, many urban megaprojects concentrate innovative corporate functions and activities. In so far as these new centers of corporate activity are located in cities, megacities, megaregions and urbanized areas, corporate strategies have a direct impact on urban sustainable development. In this context, a new spatial reorganization of production places urban areas at the core and presents formidable challenges for sustainability: they both enable and constrain it in urban areas on an unprecedented scale. Gerardo del Cerro Santamaría, Member of the European Union Expert Group in Regional Policy (Regio Program) and a United States Fulbright Award Recipient in Urban Planning 4) IoT, smart cities and international business The focus of many governments across the globe is to transform their cities into smart cities due to the inherent advantages of such a transition in contributing to a greener planet. This chapter will focus on how newly developed smart cities are contributing to the flow of goods and services from one country to another. Sandhya Sastry, Faculty of Business & Law, University of West of England, Bristol UK 5) 3-D printing and international business In an era when the whole world is talking about sustainability and different methods of reducing and recycling waste material, 3-D printing has emerged as a choice for many global manufacturers, though its usage is at very nascent stage in some developing countries. 3-D printing helps in eliminating waste material by reusing it in another process (Berman, 2012). Whatever materials are used in 3-D printing have either been converted into a manufactured product or used for recycling. The important functions of 3-D printing technology include improving the standards of production, shortening global value chains, increasing foreign direct investment and boosting international trade in raw materials etc (Petersen, 2019). In this chapter, the author will discuss the concept of 3-D printing technology and how and where it has been currently utilised. The author will also discuss the importance of 3-D printing in international business keeping in mind sustainability goals. In this era of globalization, 3-D printing technology can bring new changes in overall manufacturing and production process. The writer will also explain the key functions and importance of 3-D printing for modern day entrepreneurs. The future possibilities and limitations of this technology will also be discussed. Anuj Kumar, Bharati Vidyapeeth Institute of Management & Research, India 6) Blockchain and secure payments in international business Payments have always been a problem area in international business operations. Even though letter of credit are considered the safest mechanism to realize payments in international trade, multiple cases of fraud still occur. Blockchain is a key technology for adding security to the entire process. Purvi Pujari, Bharati Vidyapeeth’s Institute of Management Studies and Research, Priyeta Priyadarshini, Bharati Vidyapeeth’s Institute of Management Studies and Research 7) Blockchain and global value chains In international business operations manufacturers/suppliers are located in many different countries.. The effective management of global value chains is critical for companies to remain competitive in the international business landscape. This chapter provides information on how blockchain facilitates the effective management of global value chains and provides vital information about all the intermediaries involved in the entire production cycle. Geetha Subramaniam, Faculty of Business and Management, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Selangor, Malaysia, Nur Zafira Akma Rozlan, Faculty of Business and Management, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Selangor, Malaysia & Shobha Subramaniam, School of Law, Western Sydney University, New South Wales, Australia 8) Blockchain and documentation in international business Blockchain is widely used in international business for payment processes, supply chain management and logistics. Global companies now rely on blockchain technology in their global business operations to ensure safety and reliability at all stages of business operations. Blockchain technology is used by companies for issuing certificates of origin, and also in other export documentation such asBill of Lading etc. Export documents backed by blockchain technology facilitate custom processes thereby controlling illicit trade as well. Dr. Md. Nur Alam Siddik, Associate Professor, Ex-Head of the Department of Finance and Banking, Director, Office of the Student Affairs, Begum Rokeya University, Bangladesh, Suresh Iyer, Global Management and Academic Consultant, Archie D’Souza, Dayanand Sagar University. 9) New divisions of labour under Industry 4.0 Industry 4.0 refers to the new forms of production that rely increasingly on automation and the introduction of sophisticated cyber-physical systems. These production systems are re-revolutionizing existing divisions of labour, which have already been revolutionized by the spread of globalization. Changes come both in terms of what work humans will be still required to do and of social and gender relations within the workplace. New competencies and skills are required in skilled positions, with physicality and actual location becoming less important, although both will remain significant in the many low-skilled and low-paid jobs that will persist. It is already possible to discern changes in divisions of labour in some places of production, with factory automation having restricted human input to marketing, design and control, in addition to maintenance and servicing. It is also evident in the general movement in both the private and public sectors towards the modularization of work, which has seen more and more work functions outsourced and the provision of services coming from the precarious gig economy. These changes have wider impacts in society and may be seen in family structure, urban design and housing policy. Most governments are currently under-prepared for the changes that are already taking place and require better and more informed policy suggestions. As the current division of labour has led to different countries becoming specialized in different stages of production, inequality among societies is likely to be intensified as similar work functions are affected in close order in different parts of the world. This chapter provides an overview of these changes and the effects they will have on people in all categories. It aims to go beyond the factory to examine the changes that will affect people as members of families, communities and societies. In looking forward to inevitable future change, it interrogates the possibilities that policies such as universal basic income will offer fairer ways of ensuring personal security and social solidarity. John Walsh, RMIT Vietnam 10) E-Business and international trade This chapter focuses on how e-business has helped in integrating small and medium-sized organizations in the international trade process. Small and medium-sized enterprises previously faced enormous barriers to venturing into the international market as they were not capable of handling huge orders. Companies like Amazon, Alibaba and others have facilitated e-business for a large number and SMEs to sell their products to consumers globally. Millions of SMEs in China could grow their businesses manifold by offering their products on the online portal of Alibaba. Similarly, Amazon has also supported SMEs with its innovative services like fulfilment by Amazon, wherein with minimum efforts, small companies are able to sell their products in the global marketplace T Mongke, Lecturer, Department of Marketing, University of Botswana, Faculty of Business, Botswana 11) Digital marketing and globalization Reaching out to customers spread across the globe is a major challenge for global companies. The challenge is not only due to large distances but also because of the difference in their needs, language and culture. Digital marketing is one useful tool used to effectively deal with these challenges. Digital marketing strategies have now made it far easier for companies to reach every corner of the global marketplace. Almost all companies, from MNCs to the MSMEs are now using various digital marketing platforms like Facebook, LinkedIn, Youtube, Instagram etc. to reach their customers and to understand their needs.T hese platforms not only help in reaching out to the customers in far flung areas but also help in communicating with them in their local languages. Valtteri Kaartemo, University of Turku, Finland, Department of Marketing and International Business 12) Business strategies of low-tech companies in Sri Lanka in the era of digital disruption Rapid technological advancements, ubiquitous connectivity, more powerful and ever-cheaper computing power, and changes in the behaviour of digitally connected customers are driving unprecedented disruption and transformation in virtually every industry today. Such radical disruption and transformation and its wider systemic effects, frequently referred to as digital disruption, is attracting substantial attention among both scholars and practitioners alike. Digital disruption can occur at various levels, disrupting life, work and business practices, industry structures, and societal systems. It can pose a threat or provide an opportunity for firms by invalidating existing business models and result in business model innovations. The theory of disruptive innovation evolved and is predominantly focused on high-tech industries in developed economies. However, it is not well understood how a low-tech industry in a developing economy can cope with and shape disruption, and innovate and adapt as digital disruption unfolds. Drawing upon data from four case studies from a low-tech industry in Sri Lanka, this chapter provides preliminary, yet promising empirical evidence that sheds light on the further extension of the theory of disruptive innovation to low-tech industries in developing economies. Highlights of the findings include the following: build and execute a compelling vision, demonstrate top-level management’s commitment, digital congruence is the crux, adopt a partner-centric business model, accelerate the speed of innovation and turn people into the business’s secret weapon: Thilini Chathurika Gamage & WKAC Gnanapala, Sabaragamuwa University of Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka

  • What Makes a Balanced Leader?: An Islamic

De Gruyter What Makes a Balanced Leader?: An Islamic

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisDespite continuous public interest in leadership studies as well as the abundance of extant literature, the world continues to face leadership predicaments. Given the global crises mankind has been recently exposed to, which include the financial crisis of 2008 as well as the COVID-19 pandemic, further exploration of leadership concepts seems warranted. This edited book aims at introducing the concept of Balanced Leadership from an Islamic perspective. Drawing on both leadership and Islamic studies, the book synchronizes between secular and religious knowledge domains whilst introducing the notion of balance to mainstream leadership literature. The conceptualizations presented in the book serve to dissect the leadership literature, present historical and philosophical accounts of the balanced leadership concept and infuse that with Islamic theology. The book is useful for practitioners interested in leadership studies as well as scholars and researchers aiming at extending the leadership literature. Table of ContentsProspective papers can take any of the following forms: Theoretical and empirical studies that distinguish between different types of leadership from an Islamic perspective (e.g. authentic leadership, transformational leadership, etc) in relation to balanced leadership. Theoretical studies that outline a theory for balanced leadership from an Islamic perspective. This theory may focus on the processes by which balance and influence takes place. Studies on the construction and validation of measurements of balanced leadership. Conceptual notes on the risks surrounding the lack of balanced leadership from an Islamic perspective. Conceptual papers that present analogies between the notion of balanced leadership in the Islamic tradition and other traditions (e.g. Chinese). Multilevel, empirical studies that test hypotheses on the relationships between the antecedents and consequences of balanced leadership. Empirical researches that address balanced leadership in Muslim-majority or minority communities. Empirical or conceptual papers that address balanced leadership in different settings; organizational or educational. Historical and biographical notes on Islamic balanced leadership figures (e.g. of Prophet Muhammad). We, therefore, envision an introductory chapter outlining the Islamic perspective on Balanced Leadership followed by more specific articles that address the aspects noted above.

Book SynopsisThe extremely positive response to the first edition of The CMO of People from both practitioners and educators spoke of the value of fresh ideas along with specific steps on how to execute them. This second edition of Peter Navin and David Creelman’s pathbreaking book, with new sections including industry leaders’ insights from Nike, UKG, and DocuSign, corroborates the approach that sees the CMO of People as a business focused people function that utilizes the proven tools of the marketing function and creates a predictable and immersive employee experience that drives productivity and performance. If the human resources function in your talent-centric organization is not bringing the excitement and business impact it should, you need a new mental model that approaches getting the best from people with the same mindset marketing uses to get the best results with customers. Just as the Chief Marketing Officer curates an experience to get the best lifetime value from customers, the head of HR, the CMO of People, can curate an experience to get the best lifetime value from employees. This unique book discusses: What it takes to change the character and intensity of an organization How to run HR so that it has impact Why we need to structure the HR department differently How to find unconventional people to staff this unconventional model How to create a predictable and immersive end-to-end experience for employees How a CMO of People can overcome barriers and drive performance

De Gruyter Overcoming Managerialism: Power, Authority and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisManagerialism has often been defined as an ideology, according to which the effective and efficient running of commercial firms, not-for-profit organizations and public administrations is delivered by individuals who possess superior formal knowledge and expertise in management. Arguing to their exclusive education, managers deprive employers and employees of decision-making power and ensconce themselves systematically in the power structure of workplaces to advance their own interests and agenda. The central thesis of Overcoming Managerialism is that resisting and overcoming managerialism necessitates the re-establishing of the conceptual distinction between power and authority. Second, it requires the rehabilitating of authoritative management as a protection against authoritarian practices. Authority, properly conceived, redirects power to technical experts and professionals and thereby limits managerial power. The authors discuss ten contentions which, taken together, represent a theory of the foundation of management in which authority, power and rhetoric are central concepts. This book combines academic scholarship with a readable critique of managerialism. It will be of interest to both management scholars and students.

Book Synopsis"I need to check with my partner" is a common response of an employee to his manager, emphasizing the tug of war between the employee’s spouse and the workplace. The challenges in the fields of work and family have been the focus of researchers for decades. Frameworks for work–family conflict, work–family enrichment, and work–family balance have been put forth in light of the complexity of the interface. Yet the relationship between the three stakeholders managing the interface (manager, employee, and spouse), has not received the attention it deserves. Work–Family Triangle Synchronization takes a holistic look into the triangle of forces involved in the conflict: the manager, the employee, and the employee’s spouse at home. Using the therapeutic triangle relationship framework, it elaborates on the dynamic of work–family triangles and offers a structured process for designing a psychological contract among the three players. This process is termed work–family triangle synchronization (WFTS). Based on the authors’ 20 years of academic research and field experience in the organizational and family domains this book introduces a novel synchronization model, methodology, and compelling tools. Personal anecdotes and stories make the text accessible and understandable, accompanying the reader step by step in the task of developing a synchronized work–family triangle psychological contract, as both a diagnostic and a management tool.

Book SynopsisA business ecosystem may be defined as a dynamic group of largely independent economic players that create products or services that together constitute a coherent solution for customers. Business ecosystems are high on the agenda of many business leaders. They are now highly prevalent, frequently disruptive, and all companies should add the required capabilities to their strategy toolbox. Business Ecosystems is based on more than three years of research by the BCG Henderson Institute, their work with dozens of companies on their ecosystem strategies, and hundreds of conversations with academics, managers, investors, entrepreneurs, and government employees. Part I reviews the fundamentals of business ecosystems – definition, design, success factors, governance, strategies. Part II elaborates on special topics, such as trust and data, industry applications, and their potential for sustainability. Ecosystems might not be a solution for all problems, but they are also not a transitory phenomenon. The field is evolving fast and as the success factors for creating, managing and participating in business ecosystems are increasingly accepted and understood, many established and emerging companies have the opportunity to put themselves in a position to unlock great innovation and value creation potential by engaging in ecosystem business models. This book will support business professionals and executives on this journey.

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis Being both ethical and successful is challenging. The rewards of unethical behavior are often greater than the price paid for misbehavior. This book explains why leaders, seeking to run ethical and successful organizations, cannot depend only on the law and their organizations to make moral business decisions. The authors explore why making ethical business decisions is harder than is generally understood, and explores the difficulties leaders face as a result of differences in context, circumstances, and other challenges to ethical behavior, such as misleading rhetoric, inappropriate role models, cognitive dissonance and motivated forgetting. They argue that individuals need to establish ethical baselines that they will not cross when making decisions and explain how to do this systematically. The Challenge of Leading an Ethical and Successful Organization offers ways of handling ethical dilemmas successfully. It explores the need to determine in advance the potential areas of ethical conflict, and the potential costs of such conflicts and provides leaders with a practical ethical framework to reconcile ethics with business success. This book is essential reading for professionals, consultants, and academics interested in the ethics of leadership and management.

Book SynopsisThe art, fashion and wine industries are currently at various stages in their efforts to embrace and transition towards sustainability. While sustainability commitments are a necessary condition for progress, they are not sufficient. Instead, there is a need for sweeping transformative change that includes giving serious consideration to indigenous worldviews without recolonizing them. Sustainability in Art, Fashion and Wine includes findings from recent research and contributes to a new understanding of familiar concepts such as sustainability, (de)colonization and corporate responsibility in the art, fashion and wine industries by adopting critical lenses and incorporating them with innovative perspectives on circular business models and digitalization. It endeavors to present remedies for effectively combating climate change and promoting social good. While discussing specific issues such as sub-contracted labor, safe working conditions, living wages, environmental degradation, mismanaged waste, and more, the book argues that recognizing the significant role western colonization has played – and continues to play – in the developing world in our current conception of capitalism is itself unsustainable. To understand the true meaning of sustainability – to fully recognize the looming deadlines we face in combating the climate crisis and instituting sustainability as a new normal – the acceptance of a new conception of capitalism, one antithetical to colonization and exploitation, is required. Contributors to this book address these issues by applying a critical studies approach to their respective chapters, allowing the book to set out what real sustainability could and should look like in the art, fashion and wine industries.

Book SynopsisMost books about corporate governance are written for a Western audience. The Boardroom, however, takes a different approach to leadership development by emphasizing the unique socio-cultural and judicial features as well as idiosyncratic board structures in Asia, particularly in an Indonesian context. The principles of good corporate governance are accepted across borders, but the implementation and translation of transparency, fairness, accountability, and responsibility can differ quite distinctly from one country to another. Amidst global competitive turbulence, socio-economic volatility, and geopolitical uncertainty, The Boardroom analyses how Asian boardroom leaders steer organizations and how boards can be more effective. Boardmembers - appointed and entrusted by their owners - are guardians with a fiduciary duty to safeguard an organization and prepare it for a viable and sustainable future.Business managers, investors, academics, students and those interested in doing business in Asia will benefit from The Boardroom’s practical insights and recommendations to improve corporate governance and strengthen competitive advantage. "The Boardroom" - a book written by my predecessor Dr Tanri Abeng and his co-author Prof. Dr. Peter Verhezen who both combine practical experience and academic in-depth research - gives a good overview of what can and should be expected from a board. The authors describe the generic accepted governance principles, but rightfully claim the need to translate them into specific rules and regulations that make sense for Indonesian and other Asian companies.Erick Thohir, The Minister of State-Owned Enterprises of the Republic of Indonesia Understanding the dynamics of successful organizations is like being on a quest. It probably never ends. Organizations are open and social systems that cannot be managed or governed using simple theories and recipes. De Gruyter Navigating Leadership Paradox: Engaging

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisOne of the most significant management challenges in modern companies and organizations is dealing with unavoidable, complex paradoxes. Today’s world is multidimensional, multipolar, and multipurpose, and increasingly, classic management challenges such as leadership vs. management; exploitation vs. exploration, virtual vs. physical presence, economic sustainability vs. environmental sustainability, localization vs. globalization, etc. assume the characteristics of paradoxes rather than problems or dilemmas. Leadership of paradox is not about making a decision once and for all or prioritizing tough trade-offs, but about navigating between opposing considerations. Navigating Leadership Paradox argues that academic knowledge pools can support leaders’ decision-making and sense-making in organizations and navigating paradoxes. The book outlines a practical pathway for management leaders and professionals for steering through paradox using 5 phases, 10 paradoxes, 15 tools, 20 cases, and 25 learning points. It delineates how to identify a paradox by assessing the nature of your challenge and discusses the appropriate courses of action individually as well in collaboration with other stakeholders. It also gives inspiration and advice for professional helpers assisting others in navigating paradox as part of organizational development or other educational purposes. This book will be essential reading for practitioners and academicians in the fields of leadership paradox, complexity management, change management, leadership dilemmas and organizational paradox.

In the context of this scenario, this book answers two important questions: What skills do you need to be successful as a leader today that are different from those required previously? How can you develop these differentiating skills and mindsets? The antidote to the crisis of leadership lies in four attributes: Aspire: Make clear personal choices of what purpose to pursue, what values to resolutely promote and which stakeholder interests to represent. Ally: Form mutually respectful, supportive relationships with others within and beyond the organisation. • The Market Mind Hypothesis: Understanding Markets

De Gruyter The Market Mind Hypothesis: Understanding Markets

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis What is economics’ missing link? Recent economic crises have had a devastating impact on society. Worryingly, they gravely risked a collapse of the financial system. These crises also painfully revealed economics’ blind spots. Crucially, economics is not an innocent bystander but central to the problem. In this pioneering book, Patrick Schotanus explains that economics’ mechanical worldview is the ontological error which leads to flawed thinking and faulty practices. The Market Mind Hypothesis (MMH) thus calls it "mechanical economics": it not only erroneously views but also dangerously treats the economy as a machine, the market as an automaton, and its agents as robots. Inspired by heterodox economic and leading cognitive thinkers, this book offers an alternative paradigm. Central to MMH’s psychophysical worldview is the fact that consumers, investors, and other participants are conscious beings and that their minds’ extension makes consciousness a reality in markets, exemplified by market mood. Specifically, denial of the complex mind~matter exchanges as the essence of markets means the extended mind~body problem is economics’ elephant in the room. The book argues that if mechanical economics is the answer, we have been asking the wrong questions. Moreover, we will not solve our economic predicaments by doubling down on the assumption of rationality, nor by identifying yet another behavioural bias. Instead, scholars and students of economics and finance as well as finance practitioners need to investigate—through cognitive economics—the deep links between markets and minds to better understand both. With a foreword by investment strategist Russell Napier, an intermezzo by neuroscientist and complexity pioneer Scott Kelso, and an afterword by 4E cognition philosopher Julian Kiverstein.

Book SynopsisLarge-scale economic change such as the rise of coinage occurred during the Persian-dominated centuries (6th -4th centuries BCE) in the Eastern Mediterranean and ancient Near East. How do the biblical texts of the time respond to such developments? In this study, Peter Altmann lays out foundational economic conceptions from the ancient Near East and earlier biblical traditions in order to show how Persian-period biblical texts build on these traditions to address the challenges of their day. Economic issues are central to the way that Ezra and Nehemiah approach the topics of temple building and of Judean self-understanding. Economic terminology and considerations also appear in Second Isaiah and the "Holiness Code." Following significant interaction with the material culture and extra-biblical texts, the author devotes special attention to the ascendancy of economics and its theological and identity implications as structuring metaphors for divine action and human community in the Persian period.

Book SynopsisThis textbook mainly addresses beginners and readers with a basic knowledge of object-oriented programming languages like Java or C#, but with little or no modeling or software engineering experience – thus reflecting the majority of students in introductory courses at universities. Using UML, it introduces basic modeling concepts in a highly precise manner, while refraining from the interpretation of rare special cases. After a brief explanation of why modeling is an indispensable part of software development, the authors introduce the individual diagram types of UML (the class and object diagram, the sequence diagram, the state machine diagram, the activity diagram, and the use case diagram), as well as their interrelationships, in a step-by-step manner. The topics covered include not only the syntax and the semantics of the individual language elements, but also pragmatic aspects, i.e., how to use them wisely at various stages in the software development process. To this end, the work is complemented with examples that were carefully selected for their educational and illustrative value.Overall, the book provides a solid foundation and deeper understanding of the most important object-oriented modeling concepts and their application in software development. An additional website offers a complete set of slides to aid in teaching the contents of the book, exercises and further e-learning material. Table of Contents1 Introduction.- 2 A Short Tour of UML.- 3 The Use Case Diagram.- 4 The Class Diagram.- 5 The State Machine Diagram.- 6 The Sequence Diagram.- 7 The Activity Diagram.- 8 All Together Now.- 9 Further Topics.
