Taylor & Francis Ltd Information Feudalism: Who Owns the Knowledge
Book SynopsisNew intellectual property regimes are entrenching new inequalities. Access to information is fundamental to the exercise of human rights and marketplace competition, but patents are being used to lock up vital educational, software, genetic and other information, creating a global property order dominated by a multinational elite. How did intellectual property rules become part of the World Trade Organization's free trade agreements? How have these rules changed the knowledge game for international business? What are the consequences for the ownership of biotechnology and digital technology, and for all those who have to pay for what was once shared information? Based on extensive interviews with key players, this book tells the story of these profound transformations in information ownership. The authors argue that in the globalized information society, the rich have found new ways to rob the poor, and shows how intellectual property rights can be more democratically defined.Trade Review'A singularly apposite book.' Computer Bulletin 'Well-written, vigorously argued and beautifully clear.' Journal of Public Administration 'A compelling read.' International Journal of Law and Information Technology 'The book provides an overview of how international property rules have been quietly redrawn in the past 20 years. An interesting point for the sector is the call for broader coalitions to be formed to challenge such measures.' Third Sector 'Information Feudalism succeeds where other works with similar goals fail. It presents a factually based analysis of the situation of the existing regime of international protection of ownership that requires serious attention.' John Murray Press Reengineering the Corporation: A Manifesto for
Book SynopsisRevised and updated for the new economy, this text describes how the radical redesign of a company's processes, organization and culture can achieve a quantum leap in performance. In the 1990s, reengineering was implemented in the back office, the factory and the warehouse. For the new century it is being applied to the front office and the revenue producing side of the business. "Business Week" dubbed the implementation of e-commerce, "e-engineering". The Internet demands new ways of working, and reengineering is the tool that can create them. The new wave of reengineering is breaking down the walls that separate corporations from each other. Processes do not stop at corporate doorsteps. Product development, planning and many other processes are really inter-enterprise in nature; entailing work by both customer and supplier. The Internet facilitates the reengineering of these inter-corporate processes by allowing information to be shared across corporate boundaries.Trade ReviewMay well be the best-written, most well-reasoned business book for the managerial masses since In Search of Excellence * Business Week *

Book SynopsisBorn out of a decade of discussion and collaboration between The Monk and the Management Consultant - His Holiness the Dalai Lama and Laurens van den Muyzenberg - The Leader's Way represents the synthesis of East and West and provides an inspiring manifesto for business change. The world today faces many challenges. While our total wealth has increased enormously and we benefit from technological miracles, billions of people are living in abject poverty, we face the threat of environmental disaster, and even those in prosperous nations feel insecure about the future. Addressing these problems requires a different kind of leadership which sees things as they really are and resolves them in a holistic way. That is what The Leader's Way offers - a manifesto for change which can have an impact at every level, from the individual to the global.Trade ReviewAs a study of Buddhism and its relevance to globalisation, it has a lot to say. It applies the concepts of Buddhism to business: decision-making using concepts such as 'the Right Way', interdependence and impermanence. To simplify, it's a Hippocratic, do-no-harm creed: companies should have integrity, leader's mindfulness, to act for the greatest good. Many reader's will value it. There's much to learn, nothing to offend just leave your cynicism at the door. * Director Magazine *This book examines capitalism and Buddhism in a fascinating way. Everybody in business who is seriously interested in responsible entrepreneurship will recognise the issues. The book adds a valuable dimension to the values and ethical standards that form the basis for responsible leadership in business. -- Prof. C.O. Brewin Books Fort Dunlop Remembered
Book SynopsisFort Dunlop, in the Erdington district of Birmingham, was the original tyre factory and main office of Dunlop Rubber which for many years was the jewel in the crown of the Dunlop empire. 'The Fort', as it was affectionately known locally, was built in 1916 and by 1954 the entire factory area employed 10,000 workers. At one time it was one of the largest factories in the world and employed a significant proportion of the local population, often whole families worked there. Gradually foreign imports led to Fort Dunlop's demise, large scale tyre production ceased and the factory finally closed in 2014 with production moved to Germany and France. This book, compiled by a former employee, is a look back at the history of Fort Dunlop through the recollections and memories of many other members of its workforce. What emerges is a very family orientated company which played a huge part in the lives of many people who worked there or lived nearby. The building itself still remains as an iconic landmark and reminder of 'The Fort' in its heyday.

Merrell Publishers Ltd Made in London: From Workshops to Factories
Book SynopsisWalking through London's busy streets, you would not imagine that the city boasts one of the world's most diverse manufacturing scenes. But throughout its 32 boroughs, people are making propellers, bicycles, ballet shoes, military uniforms, cardboard packaging, neon signs, umbrellas, chocolate truffles, craft beer and much more. Today there are around 4000 manufacturers based in Greater London, building on the city's rich heritage of making. While producing world-class goods, they are all jostling for space and dealing with familiar challenges, such as rising rents and trying to keep developers at bay. This book provides a fascinating glimpse behind the doors of London's making and manufacturing companies: the processes and spaces that are so often hidden from view, and the people who work there, from sole traders to workforces numbering in the hundreds. The introduction is written by Mark Brearley, an architect and Professor of Urbanism at London Metropolitan Museum who also owns the London-based tray and trolley manufacturer Kaymet. The main part of the book is arranged into chapters grouping similar types of manufacturer. In total, 50 businesses are featured, ranging from the Ford Motor Company in Dagenham, the biggest factory in London; to William Say, third-generation tin-can makers, in Bermondsey; Nichols Brothers, bespoke woodturners, in Walthamstow; Growing Underground, a salad farm in old air-raid shelters under the streets of Clapham; and Jost Haas, Britain's last glass-eye maker, in Mill Hill. Specially commissioned photography by Carmel King captures the making process, the materials, the finished products and the staff at each manufacturer, while concise, engaging descriptions are provided by the design and architecture journalist Clare Dowdy. University of KwaZulu-Natal Press Real and imagined readers: Censorship, publishing and reading under apartheid
Book SynopsisReal and Imagined Readers looks at an important period in South African literary history, marked by apartheid censorship and the extensive banning of intellectual and creative voices. Returning to the archive, this book offers a reader-centric view of the successive censorship laws, and the consequences of publication control on the world of books. Books and print culture created intersectional spaces of solidarity where ideas and knowledge were contested, mediated and translated into the socio-political domain. By focusing on these marginalised readers, Matteau Matsha sheds light on the reading cultures and practices that developed in the shadow of apartheid censorship, creating alternative literary spaces. Real readers engaged in an elusive dialogue with the censors’ imagined readers, and definitions of literature and readerships emerged from this unusual connection, leading to the formation of literary conventions that inform reading politics to this day. By understanding reading as a complex and dynamic activity, this book stresses the importance of appreciating books in relation to the social context in which they are written and, most importantly, read.Trade Review“This is a fascinating account of the dynamics in the publishing industry of that time. It is a salutary reminder of what has gone before and what should not be lost in the muddle of the turmoil in the political sphere today.” — Christine Stilwell, emeritus professor, UKZN and former acting director of the Centre for African Literary Studies in Pietermaritzburg
