Cambridge University Press Profit and Gift in the Digital Economy

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisOur economy is neither overwhelmingly capitalist, as Marxist political economists argue, nor overwhelmingly a market economy, as mainstream economists assume. Both approaches ignore vast swathes of the economy, including the gift, collaborative and hybrid forms that coexist with more conventional capitalism in the new digital economy. Drawing on economic sociology, anthropology of the gift and heterodox economics, this book proposes a groundbreaking framework for analysing diverse economic systems: a political economy of practices. The framework is used to analyse Apple, Wikipedia, Google, YouTube and Facebook, showing how different complexes of appropriative practices bring about radically different economic outcomes. Innovative and topical, Profit and Gift in the Digital Economy focusses on an area of rapid social change while developing a theoretically and politically radical framework that will be of continuing long-term relevance. It will appeal to students, activists and academicTrade Review'… this is a book that has big ideas, is dealing with monumental shifts in how our society is organised, how our economy works, and how we fundamentally relate to each other … there is so much content that can be used to explain digital and economic phenomena and theory that this deserves to be a widely discussed and thought about text …' Jon Dean, Sociological Research OnlineTable of ContentsPart I. Book SynopsisStudents of history, politics, economic change, social hierarchy, and even Fascism will view this book as provocative and indispensable. It illuminates how plagues, blockades, migrations, and such world-changing innovations as the invention of printing precipitate political and social revolutions in some societies but peaceful adaptation in others.Trade Review'From the pandemic-induced shocks to the labor supply, to electoral support for right-wing populists, to war-related malnutrition, this historical work seems 'ripped from the headlines.' In fact, it is the culmination of an idea the author advanced decades ago in Commerce and Coalitions. In demonstrating how political action can be understood as one possible response to economic shocks, Rogowski has, once again, provided the closest thing political economy has to a unifying theory.' William Roberts Clark, Texas A&M University'As the world reels from crippling supply shocks, this book could not be more timely. In it, Rogowski explores how unforeseen events can cause sudden and significant disruptions to economic and political life … a must-read for anyone seeking a better understanding of the complex dynamics of supply shocks and their impacts on society.' Stephanie Rickard, London School of Economics'Ranging from the Black Death to World War One, with many stops in between, Rogowski analyzes how major events worked their way through economics and politics. Full of important lessons for a world newly sensitive to the importance of reliable sources of supply, Shocking Contrasts will be read with great benefit by anyone interested in the interaction of technology, the economy, and politics in modern societies.' • Control Systems and Reinforcement Learning

Cambridge University Press Control Systems and Reinforcement Learning

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisA high school student can create deep Q-learning code to control her robot, without any understanding of the meaning of ''deep'' or ''Q'', or why the code sometimes fails. This book is designed to explain the science behind reinforcement learning and optimal control in a way that is accessible to students with a background in calculus and matrix algebra. A unique focus is algorithm design to obtain the fastest possible speed of convergence for learning algorithms, along with insight into why reinforcement learning sometimes fails. Advanced stochastic process theory is avoided at the start by substituting random exploration with more intuitive deterministic probing for learning. Once these ideas are understood, it is not difficult to master techniques rooted in stochastic control. These topics are covered in the second part of the book, starting with Markov chain theory and ending with a fresh look at actor-critic methods for reinforcement learning.Trade Review'Control Systems and Reinforcement Learning is a densely packed book with a vivid, conversational style. It speaks both to computer scientists interested in learning about the tools and techniques of control engineers and to control engineers who want to learn about the unique challenges posed by reinforcement learning and how to address these challenges. The author, a world-class researcher in control and probability theory, is not afraid of strong and perhaps controversial opinions, making the book entertaining and attractive for open-minded readers. Everyone interested in the "why" and "how" of RL will use this gem of a book for many years to come.' Csaba Szepesvári, Canada CIFAR AI Chair, University of Alberta, and Head of the Foundations Team at DeepMind'This book is a wild ride, from the elements of control through to bleeding-edge topics in reinforcement learning. Aimed at graduate students and very good undergraduates who are willing to invest some effort, the book is a lively read and an important contribution.' Shane G. Henderson, Charles W. Lake, Jr. Chair in Productivity, Cornell University'Reinforcement learning, now the de facto workhorse powering most AI-based algorithms, has deep connections with optimal control and dynamic programing. Meyn explores these connections in a marvelous manner and uses them to develop fast, reliable iterative algorithms for solving RL problems. This excellent, timely book from a leading expert on stochastic optimal control and approximation theory is a must-read for all practitioners in this active research area.' • Never Together

    Cambridge University Press Never Together

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn November 2020, The New York Times asked fifteen of its columnists to ''explain what the past four years have cost America.'' Not one of the columnists focused on President Trump''s racism. This book seeks to redress this imbalance and bring Black Americans'' role in our economy to the forefront. While all humans were created equal, economic history in the United States tells a different story. Reconstruction lasted for only a decade, and Jim Crow laws replaced it. The Civil Rights Movement lasted through the 1960s, yet decayed under President Nixon. The United States has been declining in the Social Product Index, where it now is the lowest of the G7 and 26th in the world. For health and happiness, Temin argues that we need lasting integration efforts that allow Black Americans equal opportunity. This book convincingly integrates Black and white activities into an inclusive economic history of America.Trade Review'The title Never Together perfectly conveys the steely message of this scholarly, sweeping, and scathing distillation of two centuries of economic and political exclusion of Black citizens from American prosperity. I'm deeply impressed with how Temin distilled a huge historical reservoir into a tight thematic argument. It's quite powerful.' David Autor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology'We live beneath the long shadow of slavery. How could one group have such lower income and wealth than the other? How could their housing and schooling still be so separate? Temin takes us, step by step, through our history to fathom these differences.' Claudia Goldin, Henry Lee Professor of Economics, Harvard University'Never Together is a true innovation in historical writing. Peter Temin retells the story of American Economic History, with African-Americans fully integrated into the tale. Highlighting the race issue accentuates the striking parallels between the Gilded Age and our own times. The book is a tour de force.' Gavin Wright, Stanford University'In Never Together, pioneering new economic historian Peter Temin offers a sweeping narrative of economic repression of Black America. In this timely volume, Temin starts with the imposition on African American of the status as a pariah class in the colonial period and traces this troubling history through US macro-economic booms and busts into the present day.' Paul Rhodes, University of Michigan'Never Together is utterly necessary right now—comprehensive yet clear-eyed, general yet precise. Temin sees race and the differences race makes without being blinded by race or heedless of discrimination's consequences over the course of two centuries. This is the economic history needed in our new gilded age.' Nell Irvin Painter, Princeton University, author of The History of White People'Many tellings of American economic history do not focus on the critical contributions Black Americans have made to our nation. In Never Together, Temin remedies this problem and gives us a rich, inclusive economic history from the American Revolution to the Civil War through the current day. The upshot of this careful historical examination is that progress toward racial equity is far from steady, with important triumphs often stymied by subsequent challenges - an important lesson for everyone seeking to achieve a fairer and more equitable society.' The Twentieth Century: 4. The great migration, depression and world wars; 5. Postwar prosperity and the civil rights movement; 6. A new gilded age and mass incarceration; Part III. Book SynopsisThis provocative new history of early modern Europe argues that changes in the generation, preservation and circulation of information, chiefly on newly available and affordable paper, constituted an ''information revolution''. In commerce, finance, statecraft, scholarly life, science, and communication, early modern Europeans were compelled to place a new premium on information management. These developments had a profound and transformative impact on European life. The huge expansion in paper records and the accompanying efforts to store, share, organize and taxonomize them are intertwined with many of the essential developments in the early modern period, including the rise of the state, the Print Revolution, the Scientific Revolution, and the Republic of Letters. Engaging with historical questions across many fields of human activity, Paul M. Dover interprets the historical significance of this ''information revolution'' for the present day, and suggests thought-provoking parallelTrade Review'This engaging synthesis tracks an 'information revolution' across early modern European culture, from commerce and politics to many fields of learning and genres of personal writing. More than printing it was paper that fuelled both the explosion of information and many practices of managing it that have proved remarkably enduring.' Ann Blair, Harvard University'Words and numbers, scrawled by ink-black fingers on the milled remains of rags, became a promise never quite fulfilled: to forget nothing and to make rational decisions based on 'information.' Paul Dover's entertaining book shows how necessary it is to understand this history.' Arndt Brendecke, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München'Dover brings together a dizzying array of recent scholarship on information in early Europe - from the business of paper mills to scientists' data collection, from dusty state archives to flaming pamphlet wars. His analysis of information revolution during the age of paper offers insights for the present on every page.' Randolph C. Head, University of California, Riverside'Paul Dover's brilliant and erudite book traces the origins of our modern information society, and how it grew in a world of scholars, administrators, lawyers, merchants, and archivists. Before computers, there was a revolution in the uses of paper, and, with all its glory and pitfalls, Dover shows how it worked and created the foundations of our own very complicated modern information world. His learned and entertaining work is a must read for all those interested in information, computing, the news, and the history of communication.' 2 in stock

Book SynopsisThe Role of Business in the Responsibility to Protect closes the gap between research on the Responsibility to Protect and the private sector, as previous research has focused only on state responsibilities and state actors. This book examines in detail the developing research on the significant role that private sector actors can play in promoting peace and stability. Contributors to this volume explore the key arguments for where, why, and how private sector actors can contribute to the prevention and cessation of mass atrocity crimes; and how this can inform and extend the UN policy discussion around Responsibility to Protect. The contributors include lead voices in the Responsibility to Protect discourse as well as central voices in business and peace literature.Trade Review'In the past, predatory business practices have sometimes enabled crimes against humanity. This book identifies how some businesses have profited from human misery while also providing welcome examples of how the private sector can play a crucial role in undermining the politics of the machete and the mass grave. In doing so, this book broadens our understanding of the international community, of our collective responsibility to protect, and of how the private sector - whose wealth, resources and capacity can easily exceed those of failing or fragile states - can play a vital role in the prevention of mass atrocities.' Simon Adams, Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect, The Graduate Center, City University of New York'That business can be an instrument in building peace has now been firmly recognized. Including the business sector in the Responsibility to Protect (R2P) debate seems only natural, having in mind the capacity of the business community to influence societal attitudes and structures. In this new book professor John Forrer and Conor Seyle make an important effort in putting this agenda forward.' Per L. Saxegaard, Founder and Chairman, Business for Peace Foundation'The private sector is an increasingly influential actor in global governance - the network of arrangements that ensure order, stability and predictability even in the absence of world government. Business can sustain and profiteer from group violence. But it also has important roles to play before, in and after armed conflicts in underwriting peace, stability and prosperity as the pathway to sustainable profits. One important role is to partner with other key actors in implementing the responsibility to protect populations at risk of mass atrocities. This invaluable collection of essays by leading experts systematically explains why, how and with what prospects.' Ramesh Thakur, Australian National University, Canberra, International Commission on Intervention and State Sovereignty (ICISS) Commissioner and Editor-in-Chief, Global Governance'This volume fills an important lacuna in the literature on how business relates to the responsibility to protect. The contributing authors offer practical and theoretical insights and examples that will be of interest to many on the ways the private sector can support (or undermine) the goals of the responsibility to protect.' Abi Williams, President, The Hague Institute for Global Justice'This book, with its focus on how business actors may contribute to the global Responsibility to Protect Agenda (R2P), pioneers a whole new agenda for research and policy formulation. In the process, the authors challenge our standard conceptions of both business and R2P.' Book SynopsisIn this accessible new study, Toby Lincoln offers the first history of Chinese cities from their origins to the present. Despite being an agricultural society for thousands of years, China had an imperial urban civilization. Over the last century, this urban civilization has been transformed into the world''s largest modern urban society. Throughout their long history, Chinese cities have been shaped by interactions with those around the world, and the story of urban China is a crucial part of the history of how the world has become an urban society. Exploring the global connections of Chinese cities, the urban system, urban governance, and daily life alongside introductions to major historical debates and extracts from primary sources, this is essential reading for all those interested in China and in urban history.Trade Review'A well-written and much-needed overview of China's 2000-year urban history connecting local developments and international influences. Exploring the complex intersection of urban system, form and governance, urban culture and daily life, Toby Lincoln's comprehensive study of Chinese cities is an important addition to the growing field of global urban history.' Carola Hein, Delft University of Technology'Lincoln captures China's urban history in rich detail, including changes in conceptions of cities, urban form, and urban life over the centuries. Enlivened with excerpts from fiction and memoirs, this book is both a sweeping historical overview and a great introduction to scholarship on Chinese cities past and present.' Kristin Stapleton, University at Buffalo, SUNY'A good teaching text both reviews and engages with the literature … the author whets the reader's appetite for more, which is exactly what an introductory academic text should do.' Michael Hebbert, The China Quarterly'It is a fascinating read, entertaining a new perspective on the course of Chinese history … Highly recommended.' Q. E. Wang, Choice Connect'Lincoln's textbook is an extremely useful tool … I admire how Lincoln foregrounds the historical legacies of administrative central-ization, economic interconnection, and cultural production in China today while still conveying the many transformations of Chinese urban forms.'
