  • The Blackpool Streamlined Trams

Pen & Sword Books Ltd The Blackpool Streamlined Trams

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisIn the early 1930s the tramcar in Blackpool was at a crossroads; the system needed investment in both new track and new trams whilst there was a serious threat that the 'town' routes - as elsewhere in Britain as operators faced the same challenges - might have been converted to bus operation. The appointment of Walter Luff as the new general manager was, however, to prove a turning point. Working closely with English Electric, based in nearby Preston, Luff developed a series of streamlined trams - both single-deck and double-deck - that were to revolutionise the town's tramway. By the end of 1930s, the corporation had acquired more than 100 new trams - the majority built by English Electric but with 20 coming from Brush - that ensured the survival not only of the key route along the Promenade to Fleetwood but also of the bulk of the 'town' routes. Over the next 70 years these trams were to form the cornerstone of the Blackpool system. Almost from the start, when a number were modified to cater for the changed requirements during the Second World War, many of the trams were rebuilt - into the power cars that worked with the trailers, for example, or the one-man operated cars of the early 1970s - that extended their lives and saw them outlast more modern designs. It was only with the modernisation of the Blackpool system in the first decade of the 20th century that, finally, they became largely obsolete but still, as part of the heritage fleet, they remain very much part of the contemporary Blackpool scene. This book examines the history of Blackpool's streamlined trams of the 1930s from development through to preservation.

  • The London 'E/1' Tram

Pen & Sword Books Ltd The London 'E/1' Tram

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisProbably the single most numerous of tramcar constructed for operation on Britain's first generation electric tramways, the London County Council's 'E/1' class had an operational history that stretched for almost 50 years. The first were produced towards the end of the first decade of the 20th century and the last were withdrawn with the conclusion of 'Operation Tramaway' - the final conversion of the once great London tramway system - in July 1952. Over the years, more than 1,000 were built for operation by the LCC with similar cars being constructed for a number of the council operated systems in the capital prior to the creation of the LPTB in July 1933\. The last batch - effectively rebuilds of single-deck cars that had once operated through the Kingsway Subway prior to its modernisation - not completed until the early 1930s. During the 1920s the LCC cars had undergone a Pullmanisation programme and, during the following decade, a number underwent the LPTB's Rehabilitation scheme. Moreover, with the removal of the restriction on the use of enclosed lower-deck vestibules, many others were converted to fully-enclosed during that decade. Although withdrawals commenced in the 1930s, as the tram system north of the river was converted to trolleybus operation, and others were lost as a result of enemy action during the war, a sizeable number survived to the system's final days. This book examines the history of this important class from development through to preservation.

  • Guy Motors: Buses and Coaches

The Crowood Press Ltd Guy Motors: Buses and Coaches

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisCovering all the motor bus and trolleybus products of Guy Motors, this book recounts the history of an iconic British coachbuilder. It begins with the early origins of Sydney Guy's eponymous company, followed by the ubiquitous Arab bus and the eventual absorption of the company into the British Leyland empire. Starting with the small single deck vehicles of the 1920s, the story continues with the development of the six-wheeled chassis, with both internal combustion and electrically powered trolleybus formats. The book also examines the leading technological developments in braking, suspension and chassis design, now commonplace, that were to lead to both the Victory and Wulfrunian products, neither of which were the commercial success originally intended. The story develops with the acquisition of the Guy Motors business by Jaguar and eventual absorption into British Leyland, and ends with the final Guy Motors-inspired designs sold under the Leyland brand. In addition to new images of preserved vehicles, the book is illustrated with an extensive selection of period images of vehicles in normal service and manufacturer's sales brochures.

  • Dennis Buses and Other Vehicles

The Crowood Press Ltd Dennis Buses and Other Vehicles

Book SynopsisThe Dennis company has been building vehicles since 1895, making it the oldest continuously producing British manufacturer. From its origins in a small Guildford shop, the company has grown to become a major bus manufacturer with its products selling around the world. This book discusses the company's highs and lows, through two world wars, challenging markets and ownership changes. It documents the vehicles produced and their innovative design features, from early cars and street-cleaning machines to vans, buses, trucks, fire engines and ambulances. First-hand descriptions of how, and why, some of the company's most successful products such as the Dart, Trident and Enviro buses evolved. It explains why their once market-leading fire engines are no longer made. It also analyses the reasons why some products were less successful and explores what happened to parts of the company that were sold over the years. Finally, the company's future opportunities and challenges are considered. The author, Andy Goundry, has not only drawn on his own personal experience of almost twenty years of employment with the company but he has drawn on what is left of the company archives, private collections and first-hand accounts, to produce this book as a salutation of over 125 years of continuous manufacturing.Trade ReviewDennis sold vehicles worldwide and became a trusted vehicle manufacturer - a truly remarkable company - and this book is a fine single source history of their endeavours. -- John Tabinor * Model Truck World *

  • London Bus Routes One by One: A10-X140

Key Publishing Ltd London Bus Routes One by One: A10-X140

    2 in stock

Book SynopsisFollowing on from London Bus Routes One By One: 1-100, London Bus Routes One By One: 101-200, London Bus Routes One By One: 201-300 and London Bus Routes One By One: 301-969, this fifth and final volume in the series takes a look at the route numbers with letter prefixes. They derive from the Reshaping Plan of 1966, whereby established trunk routes were broken up, and their outer sections turned into feeder services linking interchange hubs or Underground stations. As these new routes were intended to be operated by flat-fare buses, it was decided to distinguish them by using letter prefixes based on geographical area. Flat-fare operation proved unreliable and was soon dropped, though the lettered routes remained, and the system was applied to the normal network when it came time to further sectionalise bus routes because of London's insurmountable traffic. As in previous volumes, a potted history of the routes and their routeing details are accompanied by up-to-date colour photographs showing the buses that operate on each route. Illustrated with over 190 colour photographs, this volume represents an up-to-date snapshot of the fascinating modern London bus scene as it stands in the latter half of 2021.

  • Bradford Trolleybuses: The Later Years and

Key Publishing Ltd Bradford Trolleybuses: The Later Years and

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis book follows on from Volume 1 and concludes the route history and development of the many interesting routes on the hills in Bradford. These are beautifully illustrated and show the ranges from sooty dark Victorian buildings to rural termini and the attendant changes with city redevelopment. Indeed, the redevelopment of the city in the 1960s also provides a historical pictorial backdrop to the trolleybuses seen at work in the city. The renaissance of Bradfords trolleybuses is described along with the reasons why it was such special system. After every rise, there must come a fall, and this started in Bradford soon after 1961. Whilst the future had looked good in 1960, with capital development planned, the fall and the final closure resulted from management changes, city centre development, major road changes and, finally, a definite close policy. Although the decline was a slow one, it did, however, gather momentum as final closure approached. All of the closures and attendant fleet losses are fully covered, however there is no final day' coverage, as this the book (and Volume 1) seek to principally give light to the best and peak times of the system.

  • Low-Floor Single-Deckers

    Key Publishing Ltd Low-Floor Single-Deckers

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisFor years, passengers with disabilities, wheelchair users and parents with children in buggies were unable to use single-deck buses with steep steps leading to a high floor. However, in the 1980s, a new breed of bus was being developed, with stepless entrances and flat floors. These were first seen in the UK in 1992, and gradually, operators moved away from older single-deckers as new models became available. These were often adaptations of existing models from mainland Europe, but UK-based manufacturers like Dennis, Optare and Wright have developed simpler and cheaper models tailored for the home market, the most notable being the best-selling Dennis Dart, which developed into the Alexander Dennis Enviro200 range. Where once every new low-floor single-decker was invariably diesel-engined, in the early 2000s, environmental concerns led engineers to rethink the concept, first with diesel-electric hybrids, then gas buses, battery electric buses and now hydrogen-powered buses. There are signs that diesel models are on the way out as new zero-emission models are becoming increasingly popular. With over 150 images, this book traces the development of low-floor single-deckers from the first tentative steps 30 years ago, up to the latest gas, electric and hydrogen models.

Book SynopsisCombining details of truck specifications, previoulsy unpublished images, lists of optional equipment, and industry facts and figures, this book reveals the important role played by the lightweight, high-production, and basic 1/2-ton pickup trick in American post-war society, a role often overshadowed by its innate ruggedness, reliability and utilitarian nature. As the 1950s progressed, so did the evolution of the pickup truck, which added more and more style, greater comfort, and ever increasing equipment options to its burgeoning model range. After the few drab colours first offered at the start of the decade, the pickup would assume similar styling and tri-coloured pastel paint finishes to its flashy sibling car versions.Focussing on truck specifications, optional equipment, and industry facts and figures, this book also highlights some of the rarer makes and models, and includes never before published images, revealing cutaway illustrations, and a dedicated chapter focussing on four very different design approaches form the decade.Trade Reviewanother good read and an excellent primer for pick-up enthusiasts to add to their reference library ... terrific value Classic American A lovely and colourful look at America's most beloved vehicles, from an era of exceptional development and style ...
