    Key Publishing Ltd Bristol Lodekka

Book SynopsisLodekkas first appeared in service during a period when the passenger-transport industry was enjoying a peak in popularity. Passenger numbers were among their highest ever in the provinces, and most members of society relied on public transport for journeys to and from work or school, or for leisure activities. The Lodekka was supplied only to state-owned transport operators, as a result of sales restrictions imposed on the manufacturer, yet some 5,217 examples were built between 1949 and 1968, making it one of the most familiar British double-deck bus types throughout the 1950s, '60s and '70s. This book, which features a huge variety of photographs, including a number of official views which will be of great interest to modellers and enthusiasts alike, recalls a period when Bristol Lodekkas not only formed the mainstay of many provincial bus fleets but also one in which company liveries were closely associated with specific areas of the country. It gives a colourful look at the life and times of the Bristol Lodekka, portraying it in different liveries and locations as it worked the country with a variety of operators.

Pen & Sword Books Ltd The London Volvo B7TL

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisAt the turn of the century Volvo found itself in a three-way tussle with Dennis and DAF to design and produce Britain's first low-floor double-deck buses. The resulting B7TL was later into service in London than its competitors, but quickly caught up to achieve parity with the Dennis Trident. Two lengths were available and three bodies, by Alexander, Plaxton and East Lancs. Between them, London's TfL-contracted London bus operators took over two thousand Volvo B7TLs between 2000 and 2006, after which noise problems obliged Volvo to develop the B9TL and its later B5LH hybrid. The Volvo B7TLs saw sterling service in the capital for two decades, with the last leaving service in the first week of 2021.

Safe Haven Books Routemasters of the Universe

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe last Routemaster to ply a proper London bus route retired to the garage back in 2005. But over 15 years later, this indestructible bus still pops up everywhere! It's just that nowadays merely in London Routemasters are wedding buses, Ghost Buses, afternoon tea buses, mobile yoghurt stalls on the South Bank... And elsewhere, all over the world, they have found new homes and been put to the most unlikely but serendipitous uses. So now, Harry Rosehill catalogues all the possible uses of a Routemaster bus, from a tea room in Essex to promoting a circus in Russia to an office in Bermuda, from offering bra-fitting facilities to a history of the potato, not to mention making history during the Iraq War as a Human Shield in Baghdad. Along the way he explains how Routemasters were built to last so long, why they've become so cherished, and footbrake valves are so hard to come by. Funny, surprising and touching, Routemasters of the Universe is an alternative history of a true London icon, and a celebration of ingenuity, determination and the sheer variety of human life.Trade Review'The sort of book to share your bus interests with "normal" people', Buses magazine; 'A great little book! Buy it!' Sir Peter Hendy; ‘Probably three-quarters of the stories are ones that you wouldn’t expect, and quite a few will have you sitting up in surprise. • LEDGARDS OF LEEDS BUSES: Britain’s Buses Series,

Key Publishing Ltd LEDGARDS OF LEEDS BUSES: Britain’s Buses Series,

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisSamuel Ledgard, the legendary founder and owner of the bus operator based in Leeds, started out running a pub in 1896. However, he soon branched out into catering, for which transport was needed and so, in 1912, he bought a lorry along with an interchangeable coach body and started services to the seaside resorts of Scarborough and Blackpool in 1913. Though the First Word War stopped expansion, in 1920 the coastal runs were resumed and Ledgard grew, purchasing many local bus operators. After Samuel's death in 1952, his son started a new policy of buying mainly second-hand buses - in the next 15 years only 13 new vehicles were bought, but over 170 second-hand ones joined the fleet. Focusing on the 1950s and 60s, this nostalgic look at the iconic Ledgard takes the reader on a trip down memory lane. Starting with a brief history of the buses themselves and their routes, it then goes on to examine the fleet, covering not only buses from London's Daimler fleet which ran on all but two of the double-decker routes, but also the single deckers and low-bridge double deckers. Using a variety of images, with illustrative captions, this book not only rekindles memories for those fortunate enough to have known Ledgards but also gives an insight into these charming vehicles for the many others who were never able to experience Ledgards first hand.

Key Publishing Ltd York Independents: Western Operators: Western

Book SynopsisThe city of York stands at the confluence of the rivers Ouse and Foss on flat arable land called the Vale of York, which is bordered to the west by the Pennines, to the northeast by the North York Moors and to the east by the rolling Yorkshire Wolds. Outside the city are many beautiful small country villages and bus operators were needed to provide services linking these local villages and towns with York, especially on market days. Consequently, routes were very rural, and besides catering for the traditional market day shoppers, they often carried a considerable volume of passengers to work in York. This book, the follow-on to York Independent: Eastern Stage Bus Operators, tells the story of stage bus companies, including Hopes Motor Services, Hutchinson Brothers, Reliance Motor Services, G E Sykes & Son and Majestic of Cawood, who operated from the west of York. Including over 150 photographs, many in color, it shows how most of the companies covered started out as family-based operators running a service to the nearest local market town before expanding to offer excursions and private hires. It also shows how changes to the way of life, including the growth of car ownership, eventually killed off the majority of them.

    4 in stock

Book SynopsisTransportation planners, engineers, and policymakers in the US face the monumental task of righting the wrongs of their predecessors while charting the course for the next generation. This task requires empathy while pushing against forces in the industry that are resistant to change. How do you change a system that was never designed to be equitable? How do you change a system that continues to divide communities and cede to the automobile? In Inclusive Transportation: A Manifesto for Repairing Divided Communities, transportation expert Veronica O. Davis shines a light on the inequitable and often destructive practice of transportation planning and engineering. She calls for new thinking and more diverse leadership to create transportation networks that connect people to jobs, education, opportunities, and to each other. Inclusive Transportation is a vision for change and a new era of transportation planning. Davis explains why centring people in transportation decisions requires a great shift in how transportation planners and engineers are trained, how they communicate, the kind of data they collect, and how they work as professional teams. She examines what “equity” means for a transportation project, which is central to changing how we approach and solve problems to create something safer, better, and more useful for all people. Davis aims to disrupt the status quo of the transportation industry. She urges transportation professionals to reflect on past injustices and elevate current practice to do the hard work that results in more than an idea and a catchphrase. Inclusive Transportation is a call to action and a practical approach to reconnecting and shaping communities based on principles of justice and equity.Table of ContentsForeword by tamika l. butler Preface Introduction Chapter 1: Transportation is Personal Chapter 2: Equity is more than a Baseball Graphic Chapter 3: Should there be a War on Cars? • San Francisco's Magnificent Streetcars

Fonthill Media LLc San Francisco's Magnificent Streetcars

Book SynopsisSan Francisco's first cable car line opened in 1873. The successful development of the electric streetcar by Frank Sprague in 1888 plus the 1906 San Francisco earthquake resulted in the decline of the cable car system. Concerned that the cable car system would vanish, San Francisco resident Friedel Klussmann rallied public support to save the cars. The 1982 shutdown of the cable car lines for their rebuilding led to Trolley Festivals beginning in 1983 until 1987 using a variety of historic streetcars on Market Street. Those successful festivals resulted in rebuilding the streetcar track on Market Street and the establishment of the F streetcar line in 1995 using Presidents' Conference Committee streetcars purchased from Philadelphia and refurbished in a variety of paint schemes that represented cities that once had streetcar service. In addition, the line features vintage Peter Witt streetcars from Milan, Italy; a boat like streetcar from England; and other unique cars. During 2000, the F line was extended to Fisherman's wharf and has become one of the most successful streetcar lines in the United States. This book is a photographic essay of "San Francisco's Magnificent Streetcars" along with its historic cable cars and hill climbing trolley coaches.

Pen & Sword Books Ltd London's Buses, 1979-1994: The Capital's Bus

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisIn 1979, fresh from its general election victory, the Conservative government began formulating plans to deregulate bus services and privatise the companies operating them in England, Scotland and Wales. London was not to be excluded, so from the outset, London Buses was broken up into several areas and from 1985, a tendering system was introduced which permitted other operators to bid for the routes. Opposition from the Labour group at the Greater London Council had to be dealt with -eventually achieved by abolishing it in 1986\. However, as each subsequent year passed, promises that deregulation was coming were not met. In late 1992, the privatisation timetable was set, and was ultimately completed at the end of 1994\. The issue of deregulation never resurfaced. Copiously illustrated with over 270 photographs, virtually all of which are being published for the first time, this is the story of London Buses over those sixteen tumultuous years. To give greater context to the narrative, annual vehicle acquisition listings show how purchasing policy changed over the period; important route changes, tendering gains and losses and a fleet list for the entire period are also included.
