World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Geometric Methods In Elastic Theory Of Membranes
Book Synopsis'The book is highly recommended as a reference for advanced graduate students and scholars involved in geometric analysis of membranes and other elastic surfaces. Valuable techniques may be learned from the book’s model constructions and sequential derivations and presentations of governing equations. Detailed analysis and solutions enable the reader with an increased understanding of the physical characteristics of membranes in liquid crystal phases such as their preferred shapes.'Contemporary PhysicsThis is the second edition of the book Geometric Methods in Elastic Theory of Membranes in Liquid Crystal Phases published by World Scientific in 1999. This book gives a comprehensive treatment of the conditions of mechanical equilibrium and the deformation of membranes as a surface problem in differential geometry. It is aimed at readers engaging in the field of investigation of the shape formation of membranes in liquid crystalline state with differential geometry. The material chosen in this book is mainly limited to analytical results. The main changes in this second edition are: we add a chapter (Chapter 4) to explain how to calculate variational problems on a surface with a free edge by using a new mathematical tool — moving frame method and exterior differential forms — and how to derive the shape equation and boundary conditions for open lipid membranes through this new method. In addition, we include the recent concise work on chiral lipid membranes as a section in Chapter 5, and in Chapter 6 we mention some topics that we have not fully investigated but are also important to geometric theory of membrane elasticity.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Immense Journey, The: From The Birth Of The
Book SynopsisThis book is an attempt to trace the majestic immense journey from the coming into being of the universe to the emergence and evolution of life. It is intended to complement the many excellent books that cover different aspects of this journey. The contents have been classified into five parts. Part I covers the coming into existence of the universe while Part II presents the beginning of life on the early Earth, following which Part III discusses the emergence of consciousness and intelligence, and Part IV, the immense journey of the universe beyond Earth. Finally, Part V addresses the problems raised by the rise of higher-order consciousness in human beings as captured by the phrase 'the human condition'.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Physics Of Living Matter: Space, Time And
Book SynopsisThis book is indexed in Chemical Abstracts ServiceEver since 1911, the Solvay Conferences have shaped modern physics. The format is quite different from other conferences as the emphasis is placed on discussion. The 27th edition held in October 2017 in Brussels and chaired by Boris Shraiman continued this tradition and addressed some of the most pressing open questions in the fields of biophysics, gathering many of the leading figures working on a wide variety of profound problems.The proceedings contain the 'rapporteur talks' giving a broad overview with unique insights by distinguished renowned scientists. These lectures cover the five sessions: 'Intra-cellular Structure and Dynamics', 'Cell Behavior and Control', 'Inter-cellular Interactions and Patterns', 'Morphogenesis', 'Evolutionary dynamics'.In the Solvay tradition, the proceedings also include the prepared comments to the rapporteur talks. The discussions among the participants — expert, yet lively and sometimes contentious — have been edited to retain their flavor and are reproduced in full. The reader is taken on a breathtaking ride through a fascinating field which is expanding rapidly and which was for the first time the subject of a Solvay Conference on Physics.Table of ContentsThe International Solvay Institutes; 27th Solvay Conference on Physics; Opening Session (M Henneaux); Intra-cellular Structure and Dynamics (A Hyman); Cell Behavior and Control (A Murray); Inter-cellular Interactions and Patterns (W Bialek); Morphogenesis (T Lecuit); Evolutionary Dynamics (D Fisher); Closing Session (B Shraiman);

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Peyresq Lectures On Nonlinear Phenomena (Volume
Book SynopsisThis book is the third volume of lecture notes from summer schools held in the small village of Peyresq (France). These lectures cover nonlinear physics in a broad sense. They were given over the period 2004 to 2008. The summer schools were organized by the Institut Non Linéaire de Nice (Nice, France), the Laboratoire de Physique Statistique (ENS Paris, France) and the Institut de Recherche de Physique Hors Equilibre (Marseilles, France). The goal of the book is to provide a high-quality overview on the state of the art in nonlinear sciences, and to promote the transfer of knowledge between the various domains in physics dealing with nonlinear phenomena.Table of ContentsGeneral Relativity for Beginners (Michel Le Bellac); Interface Growth Phenomena (Alain Pocheau); On Different Aspects of Granular Physics (C Josserand, P-Y Lagree and D Lhuillier); Bio-Adhesion (E Perez and F Pincet); Some Examples of Animal Locomotion in Fluids (Mederic Argenina); Stochastic Perturbations of Nonlinear Dispersive Waves (Anne De Bouard); Statistical Mechanics of Two Dimensional and Geophysical Flows (Freddy Bouchet and Antoine Venaille).

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Physics And Biology: From Molecules To Life
Book SynopsisDo you often lose your keys? You will find in this book the best strategy to find them, or at least the one deduced from statistical physics. What is the link with biology? Some proteins use the same strategy to find their target inside a living cell. This example illustrates one of the many links between physics and biology. These links result from an intense research activity in the past years at the interface between those two disciplines. This book describes some of the most recent progresses at this interface: from instrumental progresses used in biology to the mechanical description of a cell, to molecular motors, from brain activity mechanisms to auditory or sensory perception. Many fields are covered from the molecular to the scale at the organ level. A few biological notions are presented in the first chapter that may help to access the biological aspects of the others. In the end this book may interest people passionate in science, from the simple amateur to the advanced researcher level.

World Scientific Publishing Co Pte Ltd Biophysics Of Consciousness: A Foundational
Book SynopsisThe problem of how the brain produces consciousness, subjectivity and 'something it is like to be' remains one of the greatest challenges to a complete science of the natural world. While various scientists and philosophers approach the problem from their own unique perspectives and in the terms of their own respective fields, Biophysics of Consciousness: A Foundational Approach attempts a consilience across disparate disciplines to explain how it is possible that an objective brain produces subjective experience.This volume unites the crème de la crème of physicists, neuroscientists, and psychiatrists in the attempt to understand consciousness through a foundational approach encompassing ontological, evolutionary, neurobiological, and Freudian interpretations with the focus on conscious phenomena occurring in the brain. By integrating the perspectives of these diverse disciplines with the latest research and theories on the biophysics of the brain, the book tries to explain how consciousness can be an adaptive and causal element in the natural world.Table of ContentsPreface; Foreword (Searle); List of Contributors; Neurobiological Naturalism (Feinberg and Mallatt); The Evolutionary Origins of Consciousness (Feinberg and Mallatt); How Language Evolution Reshaped Human Consciousness (Arbib); A Neuropsychoanalytical Approach to The Hard Problem of Consciousness (Solms); Can Qualitative Biophysics Solve the Hard Problem? (Pereira Jr, Vimal and Pregnolato); Neural Transition Dynamics and Conscious Perceptive States (Bernroider); The Integrative Function of Consciousness (Manzotti and Chella); On The Brain's Electromagnetic Field System as the Origin of Consciousness (Hales); Subjective Experiences as Periodicities of Energies in Quantum Brain Dynamics (Poznanski et al.); Electrochemical and Quantum Dynamical Modes of Signaling in Microtubules (Friesen, Craddock and Tuszynski); Consciousness in the Universe - A Review of the Orch OR Theory (Hameroff and Penrose);
