Thames & Hudson Ltd Wedgwood Craft Design Victoria and Albert Museum
Book SynopsisLooking back at key moments in Wedgwood?s design history, this book celebrates the manufacturer?s visual power and great design from its founding in 1759 to the present day.The name Wedgwood has come to stand for something far beyond its illustrious and energetic founder: it has united art and industry; introduced design and artistic collaborations; and pioneered the development ofthe firm?s iconic blue-and-white jasperware. This book tells that story through design, reflecting the continuing role that Wedgwood and its designers, artists, and employees have played in setting trends?including collaborations with many British artists and designers such as Christopher Dresser, Eric Ravilious, and Keith Murray. Wedgwood continuously responds to the market and produces high-quality, desirable ceramicsfor a broad range of consumers, yet remains faithful to the traditions established by Josiah Wedgwood in the eighteenth century. The book presents highlights from the internationally renowned V&A Wedgwood Collection, praised by the Art Fund?one of the UK?s leading art organizations?as ?one of the most important industrial archives,? containing around 80,000 objects. This archive reflects the unique proposition of Wedgwood?s business: by operating in both the ?ornamental? and ?useful? markets, Wedgwood has been able to bring innovative ceramic design to a broad and increasingly international clientele. These ceramics and their stories demonstrate the artistic heritage, craft, and innovation that have become synonymous with the Wedgwood name for more than 250 years.Trade Review'Beautifully designed' - Ceramic Review

Thames and Hudson Ltd John Walker
Book SynopsisA long-overdue evaluation of John Walker's work from the last half century. John Walker's prolific painting career spans over sixty years. His practice is inspired by a range of visual references, notably the work of Goya, Matisse, the Abstract Expressionists and the art of Oceania, as well as by shapes and pattern motifs evoking history, time and place; however, his work cannot readily be defined as abstract or figurative, and his guiding thought is to have a conversation with the art of the past to embrace feeling and touch, and as Goya put it, to be aware of the sound of the brush. His desire to own' a subject is present in his engagement with the bay at Seal Point, Maine, near where he has lived for many years: It's about capturing something no one else has seen'. Walker's works are in major museums and private collections internationally, and he has exhibited in museums in the UK, US, Australia, New Zealand and China. Book SynopsisThe first monograph on Richard Smith, a key figure in the development of British art. Richard Smith (1931â2016) was one of the most original painters of his generation, and one of the most underrated. As Barbara Rose said of Smithâs major Tate Gallery retrospective in 1975, he was âat once in and out of touch with the currents of the mainstream â au courant and aloof at the same time.â That he latterly slipped under the radar to some extent is partly explained by his detachment from the mainstream as well as by his frequent switching of studios between England and the USA, although this helped charge his creative batteries. He is the only artist of his stature who has not been represented by a monograph, which the dazzling presentation of images in Richard Smith: Artworks now fulfils. It has been produced with the generous collaboration of the Richard Smith Foundation. Richard Smith: Artworks traces Smithâs entire career, from the breakthrough lyrical abstraction of the early Pop-i

Book SynopsisInternationally renowned and a crucial classroom text, The Arts of Chinahas been revised and expanded by the late Michael Sullivan, with Shelagh Vainker. This new, sixth, edition has an emphasis on Chinese art history, not as an assemblage of related topics, but as a continuous story. With updated attributions and dating throughout and a revised bibliography, it reflects the latest archaeological discoveries, as well as giving increased attention to modern and contemporary art and to calligraphy throughout China's history, with additional discussions of work by women artists. Visual enhancements include all new maps, and approximately one hundred new color illustrationsbringing the total to well over four hundred color illustrations. Written in the engaging and lucid style that is Sullivan's hallmark,The Arts of Chinais readily accessible to general readers as well as to serious students of art history. Sullivan's approach remains true to the way the Chinese themselves view art, providing readers with a sense of the sweep of history through China's dynasties. This organizational strategy makes it easy for readers to understand the distinct characteristics of each period of art and to gain a clearer view of how Chinese art has changed in relation to its historical context. With many improvements that bring it fully up to date,The Arts of Chinawill remain the most comprehensive and widely read introduction to the history of Chinese art.Table of ContentsPreface to Sixth Edition Afterthoughts Chronological Table of Dynasties and Modern Republics Reign Periods of the Ming and Qing Dynasties 1 Before the Dawn of History 2 The Early Bronze Age: Shang and Western Zhou 3 Eastern Zhou and the Period of the Warring States 4 The Qin and Han Dynasties 5 The Three Kingdoms and the Six Dynasties 6 The Sui and Tang Dynasties 7 The Five Dynasties and the Song Dynasty 8 The Yuan Dynasty 9 The Ming Dynasty 10 The Qing Dynasty 11 The Twentieth Century and Beyond Notes Books for Reference and Further Reading List of Maps and Illustrations Index

University of California Press Sea Change
Book SynopsisTrade Review"[Sea Change] is a work of art, and Gerhardt . . . weaves together quite a collection of essays, maps and poetry that invite us to rethink our relationship to these vanishing landscapes." -- Rosanna Xia * Los Angeles Times *"How often does an atlas command immediate attention, warranting a page-by-page perusal? . . . This unique approach documents dramatic climate change while mounting an impassioned plea to save what remains of these remarkable island communities." * Booklist, starred review *"Each entry on each threatened island is rigorously scientific – maps, diagrams and statistics are there in abundance. . . . [A]longside all this, Gerhardt also offers poems from the communities and cultures under threat, as well as images of works of art and historical artefacts. . . . The overall result is a detailed and visually impactful inventory of all that we stand to lose." * The Scotsman *"The micro-chapters with their maps and timelines make this the kind of book that is easy to dip in and out of and experience in no particular order. You can island-hop just by flipping the page, and on every page you’ll encounter some scientific curiosity or historical factoid." * Sierra Magazine *"[Sea Change] gives far-flung places a voice, grounds them in our imaginations as real places with cultures of their own, places that people call home and have done for generations. There’s a strong climate justice angle to all of this of course." * The Earthbound Report *"[Sea Change's] essays, maps, art and poetry place small islands (vanishing under rising seas right now) at the centre of the climate story. This is a refreshingly different perspective." * New Scientist *“This is not just an Atlas but more an experience. As you turn the pages you realise that you are hearing life and death stories of communities that are in danger of disappearing.” * UK National Association for Environmental Education *"Gerhardt could have created a purely scientific report of what’s been happening to such far-flung places as Lnnui Mnukuk, the Mi’kmaq name for Lennox Island in Canada’s North Atlantic provinces, and the Republic of Nauru in the Pacific, the world’s smallest independent island nation. Instead, she considers her artfully designed book a 'transportive atlas' that incorporates maps, essays, poetry and images, along with brief histories outlining the impacts of colonialism and imperialism, providing more of a holistic and multi-media experience." * Berkeleyside *"[I]rresistible . . . The book covers 49 islands, island groups and island nations around the world, each with its own short chapter giving an overview of the location’s history, the present, and the impending dangerous future Each is also accompanied by a map. Most chapters are straightforward narrative, but there is also poetry and art sprinkled throughout. The effect is to both expand the view to every ocean around the world, but to also keep the focus on a very personal, human level." * Daily Kos *"Gerhardt’s book . . . feature[s], on each spread, a map of an island or island group; visualizations of the island’s sea level today and in 2050 and 2100; geographic data about each island; demographic data about its Indigenous inhabitants; a timeline of Indigenous, 'pre-contact,' and climate-related histories; and an essay on the island and its inhabitants. Each narrative . . . depict[s] various 'solutions' deployed both by global and national governments and by Indigenous peoples: from sea walls and geoengineering to preserving and restoring coral and oyster reefs, mangrove marshes, wetlands, and other natural buffers." -- Shannon Mattern * The Avery Review *"The most beautiful title on our list, Sea Change is also the most shocking. Atlases are being redrawn as islands vanish into the ocean. This remarkable hardback combines bold, slick and effective visualisations of those changes with factual information, cultural traditions and scientific research about the planet’s most vulnerable isles, and asks what might save them." * Environment Journal *"In this definitive and authoritative guide, Gerhardt fuses the poetic voices of the islanders themselves along with visual maps, highlighting where the issues are likely to be felt the most. The priority in this text, repeated throughout, is that of being a testimony to the cultures, histories and values that are in danger of being lost, as sea level rise continues." * Climate with Brian *"Christina Gerhardt has done an exceptional job of detailing the predicaments being faced by some of the world’s most vulnerable island communities . . . this is a highly respectable piece of journalistic work, and simultaneously a beautiful design object . . . Sea Change’s aesthetic allure will mean that it reaches the coffee tables of those who might not have ordinarily thought themselves interested in the topics being addressed, and that feels crucial right now." * Geographical Magazine *"[Sea Change] is an ode to islands large and small, north and south, and the many peoples who call them home. It is a book of science and stories and, yes, even hope amidst the rising waters. . . . I guarantee anyone who reads it will come away with a better understanding of the world’s many islands and a desire to do something about protecting them." * EcoLit *Table of ContentsCONTENTS FOREWORD Bill McKibben FOREWORDS Hilda Heine, Marshall Islands / Dessima Williams, Grenada INTRODUCTION Of Oceans and Islands ARCTIC OCEAN Greenland Sarichef Island ATLANTIC OCEAN Lennox Island Deal Island Republic of Cabo Verde Bissagos Islands Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe INDIAN OCEAN AND PERSIAN GULF Kingdom of Bahrain Union of the Comoros Republic of Mauritius Republic of Seychelles Republic of Maldives Bhasan Char and Sandwip Republic of Singapore PACIFIC OCEAN South China Sea Islands Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands Guåhan Republic of Palau Federated States of Micronesia Republic of Marshall Islands Republic of Kiribati Republic of Nauru Republic of Vanuatu Solomon Islands Independent State of Papua New Guinea Republic of Fiji Tuvalu Tokelau Independent State of Samoa Niue Cook Islands Kingdom of Tonga CARIBBEAN SEA AND GULF OF MEXICO Bonaire Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Grenada Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Barbados Saint Lucia Martinique Commonwealth of Dominica Antigua and Barbuda Commonwealth of Puerto Rico Dominican Republic Haiti Jamaica Republic of Cuba Commonwealth of The Bahamas Isle de Jean Charles ANTARCTIC OCEAN Pine Island GLOSSARY ACKNOWLEDGMENTS MAP CITATIONS WORKS CITED CREDITS

The work of American artist Ruth Asawa (19262013) is brought into brilliant focus in this definitive book, originally published to accompany the first complete retrospective of Asawa's career, organized by the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco in 2006.This new edition features an expanded collection of essays and a detailed illustrated chronology that explore Asawa's fascinating life and her lasting contributions to American art.Beginning with her earliest worksdrawings and paintings created in the 1940s while she was studying at Black Mountain Collegethis beautiful volume traces Asawa's flourishing career in San Francisco and her trajectory as a pioneering modernist sculptor who is recognized internationally for her innovative wire sculptures, public commissions, and activism on behalf of public arts education. Through her lifelong experimentations with wire, Trade Review"The revised edition of The Sculpture of Ruth Asawa: Contours in the Air, a copious catalog first published in 2006 . . . offers stunning images of Asawa’s work. The essays here provide a fuller picture of the artist’s time at Black Mountain; the racial prejudices she encountered in her early life; her public commissions; her prints and drawings, which often display her more fantastical side; and her relationship with [Imogen] Cunningham, an early neighbor whose son worked for Lanier’s firm. . . . A fitting homage to this remarkable woman." * Wall Street Journal *"Together this publication and the exhibition [it coincided with] serve to reinforce this important artist’s work in the history of American modernism." * Art Daily *“Published to accompany the first complete retrospective of her career, The Sculpture of Ruth Asawa: Contours in the Air is a superb accomplishment. The book examines her pioneering modernist contributions and convinces the reader that Asawa’s work is well-deserving of the wide recognition it has received." * Leonardo Reviews *"A retrospective exhibition in 2007, and the accompanying catalog . . . . help[ed] relocate Asawa as an important figure in post-war American art." * Interior Design *“The first major efforts to reevaluate the art of Ruth Asawa. . . . This catalog will serve to give weight and purpose to Asawa’s lifetime of creative experimentation.” * Woman’s Art Journal *"The Sculpture of Ruth Asawa provides considerable and useful detail on her background, training, working processes, and community involvement." * Textile: Cloth and Culture *"A definitive collection of material on and about the artist." * Rain Taxi Review of Books *

University of California Press We Gather Together
Book SynopsisThe mutual history of art, agriculture, and American identity as told through the theme of the harvest. The harvest has traditionally been a productive season, both on American farms and in its artists' studios. Before the early nineteenth century, the ideal of the Jeffersonian yeoman, singly cultivating a subsistence plotfor family use, dominated the American imagination; after World War II, the advent of big agribusiness proved less immediately attractive for artists. In We Gather Together, Charles C. Eldredge examines the period in betweenwhen many Americans were farmers and much of America was farmland. Organized in a series of case studies each devoted to a single crop, We Gather Together initially focuses on familiar commodity crops such as corn, wheat, and potatoes, and then expands to other yields by Native American harvesters and California floriculturists, as well as winter ice cutters and coastal seaweed gatherers. This novel history of agriculture and art tracesparallel developments on land and canvas, highlighting breakthroughs in each field.Artists such as Winslow Homer, Doris Lee, and Georgia O'Keeffe are joined by innovators in agriculture, whether mechanical inventors such as Eli Whitney, John Deere, and Cyrus McCormick or genetic hybridizers such as Luther Burbank, W. Atlee Burpee, and Theodosia Shepherd. Surveying an astonishing amount of material and a wide range of paintings, prints, and other artworks from the nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century, We Gather Together gorgeously demonstrates how the use of agricultural metaphors permeated American visual culture. The harvest, we see here, came to signify and dominate politics, poetry, and popular culture, ultimately representing a primary facet of American identity and nationhood.Table of ContentsAcknowledgments Introduction One: Agriculture and Art Romantic Traditions 1 Farmscapes and Romantic Agrarianism 2 Natives and Romantic Indigeneity Two: Foodstuffs 3 Corn 4 Wheat 5 Roots and Tubers: Potatoes, Onions, Carrots 6 Pome and Stone: Apples, Peaches Three: Cash Crops 7 Cotton 8 Tobacco 9 Floriculture: Callas, Chrysanthemums Four: Nature's yield 10 Ice 11 Seaweed Five: Coda 12 Crop Arts Updated Notes 277 List of Illustrations Index

University of California Press Electrographic Architecture
Book SynopsisBridging histories of technology, media studies, and aesthetics, Electrographic Architecture forges a critical narrative of the ways in which illuminated light and color have played key roles in the formation of America's white imaginary. Carolyn L. Kane charts the rise of the country's urban advertisements, light empires, and neoclassical buildings in the early twentieth century; the midcentury construction of polychromatic electrographic spectacles; and their eclipse by informatically intense, invisible algorithms at the dawn of the new millennium. Drawing on archival research, interviews, and visual analysis, Electrographic Architecture shows how the development of America's electrographic surround runs parallel to a new paradigm of power, property, and possession.Table of ContentsContents List of Illustrations Introduction: White like No Other 1. This new, critical edition of Vitruvius' Ten Books of Architecture is the first to be published for an English-language audience in more than half a century. Expressing the range of Vitruvius' style, the translation, along with the critical commentary and illustrations, aims to shape a new image of the Vitruvius who emerges as an inventive and creative thinker, rather than the normative summarizer, as he was characterized in the Middle Ages and Renaissance.Trade Review' … this is an important publishing event in the study of architectural history. Cambridge University Press The Four Elements of Architecture and Other
Book SynopsisGottfied Semper was the most important German theorist of the nineteenth century. From his first published essay on Greek polychromy in 1834 to his final lecture on the origin of architectural styles in 1869, Semper persistently endeavoured to fashion a comprehensive architectural theory explaining the meaning and transformational nature of architectural form. The breadth and richness of his ideas, both applauded and opposed at the turn of the twentieth century, proved enormously influential in the development of modern theory. Originally published in 1989, this book provides an English translation of a number of Semper's published writings. The introduction seeks to trace the course of Semper's theoretical development over thirty-five years. Semper's ideas, like those of his contemporaries, John Ruskin and Eugene Viollet-le-Duc, had enormous influence on the genesis of modern architectural theory and will appeal to both architectural historians and architects.Table of ContentsGottfried Semper: architect and historian Joesph Rykwert; Acknowledgements; Introduction; Part I. Faber & Faber Hogarth
Book SynopsisWilliam Hogarth is a house-hold name across the country, his prints hang in our pubs and leap out from our history-books. He painted the great and good but also the common people. His art is comically exuberant, ''carried away by a passion for the ridiculous'', as Hazlitt said.Jenny Uglow, acclaimed author of Elizabeth Gaskell, Nature''s Engraver and In These Times, uncovers the man, but also the world he sprang from and the lives he pictured. He moved in the worlds of theatre, literature, journalism and politics, and found subjects for his work over the whole gamut of eighteenth century London, from street scenes to drawing rooms, and from churches to gambling halls and prisons. After striving years as an engraver and painter, Hogarth leapt into lasting fame with A Harlot''s Progress and A Rake''s Progress, but remained highly critical of the growing gulf between the luxurious lives of the ruling elite and the wretched poverty of t
