Book SynopsisA spectacular global survey of the new buildings merging architecture and nature to transform our cities for a sustainable future. Concrete horizons, urban sprawl, high-density living: never have our cities and their buildings been in greater need of greening. Yet whatâs required is more than an occasional vertical garden or living roof. Featuring seventy projects from around the world â some built, some ongoing, some from the future â Garden City looks at the increasingly inventive ways in which architects and designers are incorporating nature into the built environment, transforming the city for the benefit of all. From office buildings that incorporate urban farms and exchange the CO2 produced by humans for food and oxygen produced by plants, to lightweight systems for growing gardens on vertical surfaces; from âtree housesâ the size of city blocks to civic buildings that are âplugged intoâ existing water-management systems â there are rich and often unexpected ideas for eTable of ContentsIntroduction • 1. Book SynopsisA singular thinker and an uncompromising seeker after artistic truth, Cézanne channelled a large part of his wide-ranging intellect and ferocious wit into his letters. This translation by Alex Danchev is based on a thorough re-examination of Cézanne's correspondence with family, friends and major figures from the literary and art worlds. Danchev's great achievement is to allow readers in English to hear Cézanne's voice for the first time in his own idiomatic, idiosyncratic style. And he sounds rather different from the Cézanne we thought we knew richer, wittier, wiser, more philosophical, more irascible, above all more fully human. The letters offer fresh perspectives on his artistic vision, politics, friendships, psychology, philosophy, literary tastes and classical frame of reference. They provide an intimate insight into the preoccupations and personality of a legend.Trade Review'Poignant and powerful . . . for all his travails, Cézanne could use words with the same powerful effect with which he laid on patches of colour' - Sunday Times'The most riveting portrait of the artist yet' - Guardian'An outstanding – and gloriously readable – feat of scholarship' - Apollo

Bauhaus Goes West is a story of cultural exchange, not only between the Bauhaus émigrés and the countries to which they moved, but also in the other direction, focusing in particular on Britain. Book SynopsisA timely re-examination of European engagements with indigenous art and the presence of indigenous art in the contemporary art world. The arts of Africa, Oceania and native America famously inspired twentieth-century modernist artists such as Picasso, Matisse and Ernst. The politics of such stimulus, however, have long been highly contentious: was this a cross-cultural discovery to be celebrated, or just one more example of Western colonial appropriation? This revelatory book explores cross-cultural art through the lens of settler societies such as Australia and New Zealand, where Europeans made new nations, displacing and outnumbering but never eclipsing native peoples. In this dynamic of dispossession and resistance, visual art has loomed large. Settler artists and designers drew upon Indigenous motifs and styles in their search for distinctive identities. Yet powerful Indigenous art traditions have asserted the presence of First Nations peoples and their claims to place, hiTrade Review'One of the most interesting and articulate books written about art made in a non-Western, colonial site … This is not the view of an outsider, but of an insider … marvellous' - Svetlana Alpers'A pioneering text in postcolonial art history' - Rosalind Polly Blakesley, University of Cambridge'Possessions intelligently and sensitively navigates the relationship between indigenous and settler cultures in Australia and New Zealand' - Geoffrey Batchen, University of Oxford'In this re-issue of his ground-breaking book Possessions, Thomas provides what many of us in settler colonies are currently grappling with: the need to assess where we have been in the project of decolonising art and art history, and the need to re-think where we are now' - Peter Brunt, Victoria University, Wellington'[Thomas's] writing is spare, elegant and persuasive' - Marina Vaizey, The Art Newspaper'This book has implications that extend far beyond the anthropology of art... unusual and innovative' - American Anthropologist'Thomas operates at the mental border-post where art criticism, sociology, anthropology and history fade into each other … Civilised, judicious, at ease with uneasy perspectives, Thomas marks in 'Possessions' the apotheosis of modern anthropology' - The Australian'Possessions has ensured that settler-colonial and Indigenous histories from the eighteenth century onward can never again be separated but are perceived as entangled narratives... a major statement' - Tim Barringer, Yale University'A prescient, foundational study' - Ruth Phillips, Carleton University, Ottawa'An astute and dynamic analysis of colonialism [Thomas provides] a powerful, transdisciplinary theoretical and methodological model for understanding the varied practices—from appropriation to appreciation, from resistance to resilience—by which art mediates the colonial encounter for both settlers and Indigenous peoples' - Aaron Glass, Bard Graduate Centre, New York'Significantly reframes the old issue of the relationship between primitivism and modernism' - Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism'[Thomas is] a writer of the rarest quality' - Simon Winchester

The Impressionists â Monet, Manet, Degas, Morisot, Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley and others â are probably the most popular of all artistic schools. Their struggle to impose a new vision is one of the most absorbing in the whole history of art. With imagination and insight, art historian Bernard Denvir brings Impressionism into focus by showing it through the eyes of the artists themselves and their contemporaries, against the background of the time. Through letters, critical reviews, statements and reminiscences â whether explosive or appreciative, blinkered or perceptive â of the people who were there, the story of this ground-breaking art movement comes alive. The work of Issei Suda (19402019) is distinct in contemporary avant-garde Japanese photography for its celebration of the beauty of the everyday. His black and white pictures reflect on apparent banality of urban life, capturing the little surprises usually ignored in our world': the shadow of a figure, the shapes of the street, the expressions on stranger's faces. Suda's practice revealed the tensions between old and new Japan, juxtaposing the ingrained visual traditions of Japanese culture with the prevailing western vocabulary of fashion, advertising and leisure, as seen through his observant and tender lens.

Introducing the lives and works of a rich network of neglected women artists, British Women Artists sets these alongside such renowned presences as Barbara Hepworth, Laura Knight and Winifred Nicholson. In an era of radical activism and great social and political change, women forged new relationships with art and its institutions. Such change was not without its challenges, and with acerbic wit Trant delves into the gendered make-up of the avant-garde', and the tyranny of artistic isms'. In the decades after women won the vote in Britain, the fortunes of women artists were shaped by war, domesticity, continued oppressions and spirite

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe first biography to trace the remarkable life and career of Ukrainian-born Boris Iofan, beautifully illustrated with many of Iofanâs previously unseen sketchbooks and photographs from private collections. This is a history of architecture, politics and power. Boris Iofan (1891â1976) made his mark as Stalinâs architect, both in the grand projects he achieved, such as the House on the Embankment, a megastructure of 505 homes for the Soviet elite, and through his unbuilt designs, in particular the Palace of the Soviets, a baroque Stalinist dream whose iconic image was reproduced throughout the Soviet Union. Iofanâs life and designs offer a unique perspective into the politics of twentieth-century architecture and the history of the Soviet Union.Trade Review'Gorgeous pencil sketches … a breezy and readable text accessible to a broader, non-specialist audience … [Sudjic] deals with the cascade of names and denunciations, political shifts and relationships with agility and ease' - Edwin Heathcote, The Art Newspaper'Deyan Sudjic conveys Iofan’s story in captivating fashion. The 100 photographs and drawings that accompany Sudjic’s text evoke something of the nature of the Stalinist era and the oppressive atmosphere in which Iofan lived and worked. Reading this cultural biography, you learn as much about Jewish life in Odessa in the late-19th and early-20th century, and the later strictures of Stalinist Russia, as you do about Iofan’s architectural prowess, so the book certainly has a broader interest too' - Beth Williamson, Art Studio international'A fine biography of Boris Iofan' - Jonathan Meades, The Critic'A forensic examination of Iofan’s work and private communications' - Literary Review'Sudjic tells [Iofan's] story with brio' - Financial Times'Sudjic’s book is a useful introduction to Iofan’s life and work … As Sudjic writes, the second half of Iofan’s career is “a cautionary tale of how damaging it can be to come close to political power, especially for an architect negotiating an accommodation with tyranny”' - New English Review

Book SynopsisThe perfect primer on American photographer, photojournalist and filmmaker Ruth Orkin. Ruth Orkin (192185) always dreamed of becoming a filmmaker, and although that ambition was thwarted until later in her career, she quickly found other ways of engaging with the world of images. She was given her first camera at the age of ten and by the age of seventeen, she was cycling across America from Los Angeles to New York, documenting her trip in albums of annotated photographs. In the early 1940s she settled in New York, joining the Photo League and making her name with photo stories for major magazines such as Life, Look and This Week. In images that range from celebrity portraits to bird's-eye views from her apartment window, from children at play to the experiences of a lone American tourist in Italy, Orkin's photography always retains a cinematic sense of the passage of time and allows the humanity and charisma of her subjects to shine through.
