  • How to Study Public Life: Methods in Urban Design

Island Press How to Study Public Life: Methods in Urban Design

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisHow do we accommodate a growing urban population in a way that is sustainable, equitable, and inviting? This question is becoming increasingly urgent as we face diminishing fossil-fuel resources and the effects of a changing climate while global cities continue to compete to be the most vibrant centres of culture, knowledge, and finance. Jan Gehl has been examining this question since the 1960s, when few urban designers or planners were thinking about designing cities for people. But given the unpredictable, complex and ephemeral nature of life in cities, how can we best design public infrastructure - vital to cities for getting for place to place, or staying in place - for human use? Studying city life and understanding the factors that encourage or discourage use is the key to designing inviting public space. In How to Study Public Life Jan Gehl and Birgitte Svarre draw from their combined experience of over 50 years to provide a history of public-life study as well as methods and tools necessary to recapture city life as an important planning dimension. This type of systematic study began in earnest in the 1960s, when several researchers and journalists on different continents criticized urban planning for having forgotten life in the city. City life studies provide knowledge about human behaviour in the built environment in an attempt to put it on an equal footing with knowledge about urban elements such as buildings and transport systems. Studies can be used as input in the decision-making process, as part of overall planning, or in designing individual projects such as streets, squares or parks. The original goal is still the goal today: to recapture city life as an important planning dimension. Anyone interested in improving city life will find inspiration, tools, and examples in this invaluable guide.

  • The Art and Science of Ernst Haeckel

Taschen GmbH The Art and Science of Ernst Haeckel

    7 in stock

Book SynopsisErnst Haeckel (1834–1919) was a German-born biologist, naturalist, evolutionist, artist, philosopher, and doctor who spent his life researching flora and fauna from the highest mountaintops to the deepest ocean. A vociferous supporter and developer of Darwin’s theories of evolution, he denounced religious dogma, authored philosophical treatises, gained a doctorate in zoology, and coined scientific terms which have passed into common usage, including ecology, phylum, and stem cell. At the heart of Haeckel’s colossal legacy was the motivation not only to discover but also to explain. To do this, he created hundreds of detailed drawings, watercolors, and sketches of his findings which he published in successive volumes, including several marine organism collections and the majestic Kunstformen der Natur (Art Forms in Nature), which could serve as the cornerstone of Haeckel’s entire life project. Like a meticulous visual encyclopedia of living things, Haeckel’s work was as remarkable for its graphic precision and meticulous shading as for its understanding of organic evolution. From bats to the box jellyfish, lizards to lichen, and spider legs to sea anemones, Haeckel emphasized the essential symmetries and order of nature, and found biological beauty in even the most unlikely of creatures. In this book, we celebrate the scientific, artistic, and environmental importance of Haeckel’s work, with a collection of 450 of his finest prints from several of his most important tomes, including Die Radiolarien, Monographie der Medusen, Die Kalkschwämme, and Kunstformen der Natur. At a time when biodiversity is increasingly threatened by human activities, the book is at once a visual masterwork, an underwater exploration, and a vivid reminder of the precious variety of life.Trade Review“…as energetic and colorful as Haeckel’s life. It’s scientific eye candy that feels as fresh as Haeckel’s groundbreaking biological art must have seemed more than a century ago.” * The Washington Post *“A dazzling graphic work... One is left astounded by these mesmerizing wonders.” * Le Monde *“…a glorious, oversize volume collecting Haeckel’s artistic work.” * The Wall Street Journal *“The book’s prints and commentary shed new light on the prolific output of Ernst Haeckel and his impact on modern science and philosophy.” * vice.com *“Through Haeckel’s steady hand everyone can grasp the beauty, the elegance - and sometimes the sadness - in all walks of life.” * smithsonianmag.com *“…a glorious book… his influence on art and the natural sciences remains profound, and his stunning artworks continue to stand the test of time.” * American Scientist *“This is a bible for those who love pattern.” * The Times *

Book SynopsisAn elegant and lavish coffee table book revealing the origins, processes, and brilliant final paintings produced for the award-winning fantasy novel Stardust written by Neil Gaiman. From the moment Gaiman asked Vess to join him on the project, through the layouts, concept illustrations, pen-and-ink drawings, and breath-taking paintings-printed in an oversized format and including works from before they were adjusted to fit the text. Includes work for all of the different editions, and even the ultra-rare portfolio A Fall of Stardust with contributions from many famous cartoonists and illustrators including Mike Mignola (Hellboy), William Stout, Stan Sakai (Usagi Yojimbo), and Sergio Aragones (Mad).Trade Review“A twisting, wonderous tale full of magic.”—The Chicago Tribune“Spiced with blood, sex, and genial humor, this wonderful tale is highly recommended.”—Library Journal (starred review)“The story alone is wonderful, but enhanced by the gorgeous artwork on nearly every page… this book becomes a treasure.”—SFSite“Without illustrations, ‘Stardust’ is fanciful escape. With illustrations, it is a masterpiece.”—Valdosta Daily Times“Every part of a Charles Vess artwork - every sinuous line, mist-filled glade and velvety shadow – is an invitation into a numinous world in which the most extraordinary things may happen; a beautifully composed charm to invoke the most potent form of magic – that of the storyteller.”—Alan Lee, illustrator, concept designer for Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings “Charles is a master of illustration, and the lyricism of his lines perfectly evoke the realm of faery. sinuous, swirling and dynamic, the lines sing to us of the world beyond the wall. This book is a beautiful and massive achievement… one of the best to come out of 2020 and we are truly grateful for that.”—Brian and Wendy Froud: Brian illustrated Faeries (with Alan Lee) and was the conceptual designer for The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth, and Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance. Wendy is a sculptor and puppet-maker who fabricated Yoda for The Empire Strikes Back and creatures for The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. “The power of Charles Vess’ artworks comes not from his masterful design sensibilities, it is not embedded in the graceful lines and movement he brings to his figures, nor is it based in his stunning compositional choices, what verily holds the eye and heart in Charles’ work is the fact that he instills his art with Truth. From close up portraits to a crowded fair in the forest, we visit worlds fluidly and Truthfully constructed through the hand and mind of an amazing artist.”—illustrator Donato Giancola, winner of the World Fantasy, Chesley, and Hugo Awards “To open The Art of Stardust, it seems, is to cross the Wall. Charles is a bona-fide artist-bard, a pied piper of story pictures. By the end of this glorious book, I blinked and shook my head and was surprised to find it was still 2021, and I would have turned right around again and happily climbed back into his land beyond the Wall, maybe forever. It is a timeless source of inspiration and wonder, as bright and as welcome as a falling star.”—Iain McCaig, illustrator and designer for Star Wars, Terminator 2, Interview with a Vampire, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and more “The twining roots of Charles Vess’ art style reach back to the Golden Age of Illustration and feed his enchanting imagery, which blooms in hues of Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, and Howard Pyle. He is lord of the line and a wizard of watercolor.”— Tony Detirlizzi, illustrator (including Magic: The Gathering), Caldecott Award winner, and co-creator of The Spiderwick Chronicles “When I first saw STARDUST all those years ago I was blown away by it. Now, though older, tired and a thousand times more jaded, I am blown away all over again. The art is actually even better than I remember and seeing the staggering amount of work that went into creating it is truly a wonderful thing.”—Mike Mignola, creator of Hellboy “Charles is at once an artist’s artist and a reader’s artist. What he captures in his work is the magic we all feel. The line work has beauty, depth, and the rare sense of visual story; they’re not merely his observations, they are stories in themselves.”—illustrator Gregory Manchess

Book SynopsisIfa Brand never felt satisfied as a model. The dissatisfaction stemmed from not being able to represent her true identity: 'I fell “between styles”: alternative but not alternative enough; fetish but not in a typical sense. I also disliked photographers telling me how I should look, pose, behave; telling me no to red lips, no to precious lingerie and all the things I loved.’ In 2017, she decided to go her own way. She saw photography as an opportunity to be her own creative director, to follow her own storylines, and to explore her own vision of sensuality, eroticism and fetish. Hers is a quest for personal empowerment through the art of self-portraiture: ‘I find it very important to present a strong, independent woman. There needs to be an element of being untouchable. The message to the viewer is: yes you can look but solely on my terms.’

Nadieh and Shirley share their sketches and code, experiments and explorations, reflections and realizations, eurekas and backtracks, and infectious enthusiasm. They each bring a unique vector, voice, and style to the 12 project topics; what unites them is deep technical chops and a superlative eye for design." --Tamara Munzner, Professor of Computer Science at the University of British Columbia, Chair of the Executive Committee of IEEE Visualization, Author of Visualization Analysis and Design "What a rare treat it is for Shirley and Nadieh to share their process so openly! We see not only the technical work—prototyping with real data, riffing from examples—but the circuitous emotional journey from rough concept to polished final product. Shirley and Nadieh are honest, entertaining, and insightful in their retrospectives. For anyone interested in visualization, their stories are a powerful lesson of how designs can be shaped to communicate effectively and with intent. And their openness and humility make the practice less intimidating, inviting newcomers to get started." --Mike Bostock, Creator of D3.js and Founder of Observable "The work of Nadieh Bremer & Shirley Wu is some of the most beautiful and exciting data visualization work being done today. They bring incredible aesthetics to complex data to enlighten and evoke joy in their audiences. In Data Sketches we get to see some of their best, most personal work and, more than that, we get their explanation of what inspired them and how they accomplished such amazing work. This book is a treat for both the eye and the mind." --Elijah Meeks, Executive Director of the Data Visualization Society and Author "This book brings the perfect blend of ingredients together for a nourishing recipe of inspiration and knowledge beneficial to beginners and experienced practitioners alike. They show that visualization can be both useful and beautiful. They show the many possibilities when you put thought into the data and the visuals. Prestel Great Pubs of England: Thirty-three of England's

Book Synopsis“There is nothing that has yet been contrived by man, by which so much happiness is produced as by a good tavern,” wrote Samuel Johnson. Three centuries on, the English pub remains the ultimate happy place for those seeking refuge, recreation, or refreshment. But pubs today constitute a broad church, with old-school saloons and ultimate locals joined by modern reimaginings of traditional hostelries and Michelin-starred gastro-temples. This book brings together 33 of England’s finest and most distinctive inns, from Yorkshire dining destinations to Cornish beer shrines. Acclaimed photographer Horst A Friedrichs and renowned writer Stuart Husband capture these places in all their idiosyncratic glory and infinite variety: the pub as artistic statement, social hub, foodie pilgrimage site, personal fiefdom of legendary landlords and landladies, or repository of history. But all pubs share the same time-honoured purpose: to offer the warmest of welcomes, and to lift the spirits.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisBerthe Morisot: Shaping Impressionism is the first major UK exhibition of the renowned Impressionist since 1950. In partnership with the Musée Marmottan Monet, Paris, it will bring together around 30 of Morisot’s most important works from international collections, many never seen before in the UK, to reveal the artist as a trailblazer of the movement as well as uncovering a previously untold connection between her work and 18th century culture, with around 20 works for comparison. A founding member of the Impressionist group, Berthe Morisot (1841-1895) was known for her swiftly painted glimpses of contemporary life and intimate domestic scenes. She featured prominently in the Impressionist exhibitions and defied social norms to become one of the movement’s most influential figures. Berthe Morisot: Shaping Impressionism will draw on new research and previously unpublished archival material from the Musée Marmottan Monet to trace the roots of her inspiration, revealing the ways in which Morisot engaged with 18th century art and culture, while also highlighting the originality of her artistic vision, which ultimately set her apart from her predecessors. Highlights will include Eugène Manet on the Isle of Wight (1875), painted while Morisot was on honeymoon in England, and her striking Self-Portrait (1885), which will appear alongside Jean-Honoré Fragonard’s Young Woman (c.1769) from Dulwich Picture Gallery’s collection. Apollo revealing his divinity to the shepherdess Issé, after François Boucher (1892), In the Apple Tree (1890) and Julie Manet with her Greyhound Laerte (1893), are among nine paintings on loan from the Musée Marmottan Monet, many receiving their first ever showing in the UK. • Basic Human Anatomy: An Essential Visual Guide

Monacelli Press Basic Human Anatomy: An Essential Visual Guide

Book SynopsisBasic Human Anatomy teaches artists the simple yet powerful formula artists have used for centuries to draw the human figure from the inside out. A comprehensive, yet flexible and holistic approach, Roberto Osti’s method of teaching anatomy is exhaustive, but never loses sight of the fact that this understanding should lead to the creation of art. A comprehensive, yet flexible and holistic approach to the human body for artists, Roberto Osti’s method of teaching anatomy is exhaustive, but never loses sight of the fact that this understanding should lead to the creation of art. Basic Human Anatomy teaches artists the simple yet powerful formula artists have used for centuries to draw the human figure from the inside out. Osti, using the basic system of line, shape, and form used by da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo, takes readers step-by-step through all the lessons needed in order to master this essential foundation skill. Organized progressively, the book shows readers how to replicate the underlying structure of the body using easy-to-understand scales and ratios; conceptualize the front and side views of the skeleton with basic shapes; add detail with simplified depictions of complex bones and joints; draw a muscle map of the body with volumetric form and realistic dimension; master the feet, hands, and skull to create realistic renderings of the human form; and apply a deeper knowledge of anatomy to finished drawings for more impact.Trade Review"This volume is useful not only for the excellent information and guidance Osti (Univ. of the Arts, Philadelphia) provides but also for the manner in which he presents the information. His presentation of the fundamentals is simple but elegant, and the visuals, examples, and exercises harmoniously supplement the information. Readers can flip to just what they need or study the work as a whole, a flexibility that makes the book valuable as both a textbook and a reference tool. Osti's skills as an artist and instructor are abundantly clear throughout the book, and the many excellent illustrations showcase his credentials well. The market is saturated with books on figure drawing, but human anatomy titles are less numerous, and many are dated. Sarah Simblet’s Anatomy for the Artist (2001) and Valerie Winslow’s Classic Human Anatomy in Motion: The Artist's Guide to the Dynamics of Figure Drawing (2015) are excellent, but what sets Osti’s title apart is its simplicity and the clarity of its prose." - CHOICE magazine, J. Book SynopsisA history of the last 50 years of curating told through Hans Ulrich Obrist''s interviews with legendary curators Anne D''Harnoncourt, Werner Hoffman, Jean Leering, Franz Meyer, Seth Siegelaub, Walter Zanini, Johannes Cladders, Lucy Lippard, Walter Hopps, Pontus Hulten, and Harald SzeemannPart of JRPRinger''s innovative Documents series, published with Les Presses du R?el and dedicated to critical writings, this publication comprises a unique collection of interviews by Hans Ulrich Obrist mapping the development of the curatorial field--from early independent curators in the 1960s and 70s and the experimental institutional programs developed in Europe and the U.S. through the inception of Documenta and the various biennales and fairs--with pioneering curators Anne D''Harnoncourt, Werner Hoffman, Jean Leering, Franz Meyer, Seth Siegelaub, Walter Zanini, Johannes Cladders, Lucy Lippard, Walter Hopps, Pontus Hulten and Harald Szeemann. Speaking of Szeemann on the occasion of this legendary curator''s death in 2005, critic Aaron Schuster summed up, the image we have of the curator today: the curator-as-artist, a roaming, freelance designer of exhibitions, or in his own witty formulation, a ''spiritual guest worker''... If artists since Marcel Duchamp have affirmed selection and arrangement as legitimate artistic strategies, was it not simply a matter of time before curatorial practice--itself defined by selection and arrangement--would come to be seen as an art that operates on the field of art itself?

  • Vanessa Bell: Portrait of the Bloomsbury Artist

Bloomsbury Publishing PLC Vanessa Bell: Portrait of the Bloomsbury Artist

Book SynopsisThe definitive and authorised biography of the artist Vanessa Bell. Even through the lens of the twenty-first century, the story of Vanessa Bell’s life is unorthodox. A powerful magnetic figure, Bell lived at the heart of the Bloomsbury Group and was often the core figure around which the disparate individuals of the movement revolved. Her art and designs – so often overshadowed by her sister Virginia Woolf’s writings and fame and by the interest in her own unconventional life – made a significant contribution to the history of the Bloomsbury Group. Yet, until this authorised biography was written, she has remained a largely silent and enigmatic figure. In this captivating account, acclaimed art historian and biographer Frances Spalding restores Bell to the heart of the Bloomsbury Group, illuminating an exceptional life and the free-spirited circle among which she lived.Table of ContentsList of Plates Preface to New Edition Preface Acknowledgements Always the Eldest 1879–1895 Mrs Young’s Evening Dress 1895–1904 Changing Places 1904–1906 Mr and Mrs Clive Bell 1907–1909 Petticoats over Windmills 1910–1912 Asheham 1912–1914 Granite and Rainbow 1914–1916 One Among Three 1916–1918 At Home and Abroad 1919–1926 Charleston in France 1927–1930 High Yellow 1930–1934 Between Bloomsbury and China 1935–1937 Bitter Odds 1937–1945 The Attic Studio 1945–1961 Notes Bibliography Index
