Tuttle Publishing Japanese Architecture: An Exploration of Elements
Book SynopsisThick thatched roofs and rough mud plaster walls. An intricately carved wood transom and a precisely woven tatami mat—each element of traditional Japanese architecture tells a story. In Japanese Architecture, author Mira Locher explores how each of these stories encompasses the particular development, construction, function and symbolism inherent in historic architectural elements. From roofs, walls and floors to door pulls and kettle hangers, Japanese Architecture situates these elements firmly within the natural environment and traditional Japanese culture.Japanese architecture developed with influences from abroad and particular socio-political situations at home. The resulting forms and construction materials—soaring roofs with long eaves, heavy timber structures of stout columns supporting thick beams, mud plaster walls flecked with straw and sand and the refined paper-covered lattice shoji screen—are recognizable as being of distinctly Japanese design. These constructed forms, designed with strong connections to the surrounding environment, utilize natural construction materials in ways that are both practical and inventive. This fascinating architecture book provides a comprehensive perspective of traditional Japanese architecture, relating the historical development and context of buildings and the Japanese garden while examining the stories of the individual architectural elements, from foundation to roof.Trade Review"Mira Locher makes the observation that tradition only exists as an idea when it is challenged or superseded by the new. In her first-rate resource book on traditional design you will learn a great deal about construction methods, in which the use of natural materials encouraged a responsible attitude toward conservation." --The Japan Times"It describes architectural components thoroughly, exactingly, and lovingly∙identifying them all with Japanese terms. Overall, this is a delightful book of photographs and a useful…guide for Japanophile architects and designers." --Choice magazine"Designers, architects, artists, and anyone with a love of Japanese traditional culture will enjoy this book." --Library Journal

Chronicle Books The Stahl House: Case Study House #22: The Making
Book SynopsisThe Stahl House: Case Study House #22, The Making of a Modernist Icon is the official autobiography of this world renowned architectural gem by the family that made it their home. Considered one of the most iconic and recognizable examples of mid-century modern homes in the world, it was first envisioned by the owner’s Buck and Carlotta Stahl, designed by architect Pierre Koenig, and immortalized by photographer Julius Shulman. This 1960 glass-and-steel home in the Hollywood Hills has come to embody the idealism of a generation in search of the American dream. As one of the Case Study Houses designed between 1945 and 1966 under the vision of John Entenza and ARTS & ARCHITECTURE magazine, this was an affordable yet progressive design experiment to address the postwar housing shortage. The result—a two-bedroom, 2,200-square-foot house with glass walls that disappear into a 270-degree panorama of Los Angeles—became Koenig's pièce de résistance. The Stahl House broke rules, defied building codes that discouraged building on cliffs, and expanded the possibilities of residential architecture. The glass walls blurred the boundary between indoors and outdoors. The building seemed to merge with the city itself, the lines of the structure aligning with the geometry of the city's gridded streets. "Los Angeles becomes an extension of the house and vice versa," Koenig said. "The house is just a part of the city." The book shares the never-before-told inside story by the Stahl family's adult children who grew up there and still graciously give home tours to fans from around the world. Through extensive research and interviews, historical information and personal photos are featured. This includes Buck Stahl's initial vision of the home with his own DIY schematic model for how to build on the complicated site. It also includes blueprints, floor plans, and sketches by Pierre Koenig, as well as Julius Shulman’s renowned photographs. Additionally, photographs of the house used in high-end, fashion ad campaigns and film and television are also included, cementing The Stahl House’s prominence in contemporary culture.

Prestel The Alps: In Panoramic Paintings
Book SynopsisAs downhill skiing became popular in 20th-century Europe, resorts in the Austrian, German, French, and Swiss Alps commissioned paintings of their ski runs to turn into maps. The best of these paintings are now featured in this book showing the artists’ ability to combine technical virtuosity, geographic information, and creative flair. The undoubted master of panoramic map painting is H. C. Berann, and many examples of his works are shown in this beautiful volume, along with a select handful of artists from throughout Europe. Detailing scenes of the Alpine range from Slovenia to France, each of these images was created by hand from aerial photography, mostly shot by the artists on helicopter rides through the mountains. The paintings themselves cleverly combine multiple perspectives so that all trails, terrain, and mountain features are visible. In these exquisite reproductions, the paintings have been stripped of all references to the ski trails, allowing viewers to focus entirely on the beauty of the colours, composition, and detail. A joy to study and savour, these dramatic and vivid paintings recall a time when the human hand was the best means of translating the Alps’ towering beauty to the general public.

Rizzoli International Publications McAlpine Romantic Modernism
Book SynopsisA celebration of the recent work of McALPINE, the award-winning architectural and interior design firm, with a collection of residences embracing modernism, classicism, and romanticism. The work of renowned firm McALPINE has always communicated the power of romanticism, speaking directly to the heart through the beauty and poetry of the home. Tapping diverse influences, the residences draw from architectural languages ranging from Elizabethan and Dutch to colonial Caribbean and agrarian American. The book opens with Bobby McAlpine’s own newly designed house, featuring exquisite spaces that are modern in expression but classical in order and balance. Other projects include a white-on-white neoclassical pavilion-by-the-sea in the Bahamas; a masonry dwelling in the rolling hills of Virginia; a quintessential American country house in Tennessee that combines the familiarity of a farmhouse with crisp minimalism; and an exuberant house sited on the edge of a pastoral golfTrade Review"Design can be poetic, and so can designers. In this Rizzoli book, architect BOBBY MCALPINE, writing with Susan Sully, engages in flights of fancy in a series of chapters that are more discursive than descriptive; at the end of the volume is an actual poem he penned, “On Intimacy.” Of the 1STDIBS 50 HONOREE’S own Nashville home, which shows his penchant for white exteriors, high ceilings and squared-off volumes, McAlpine writes, “There is a recurrent feeling in the house of its being a vessel — a ship, an airplane, a cathedral.” Among the other projects in the book are a neoclassical Bahamas retreat and a wood-planked minimalist farmhouse in the Tennessee countryside. Veteran photographer Simon Upton captures the distinctive look and scale of McAlpine’s go-to features, like highly pitched white gables, and manages to harmonize with the inspiring text. The book is a good gift for anyone who has a true romance with their own home." —1STDIBS"In his latest tome, Bobby McAlpine showcases the recent projects by his award-winning architectural and interior design firm McALPINE. Inside McAlpine: Romantic Modernism, readers are not only wowed by the striking photography but also introduced to new viewpoints within the vernacular of architecture." —ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES "Some designer’s work speaks for itself. Bobby McAlpine is one of those designers. In his new book, McAlpine: Romantic Modernism, we get the pleasure of touring 5 incredible homes including the author’s own newly designed residence. We don’t use the term swooning often, but we are positively swooning over this book. McAlpines homes are always character-filled, luxuriously layered, perfectly patterned… Well, don’t take our word for it. Dive in and take a swim in this work that, just like jumping in the ocean, will leave you breathless." —DESIGN CHIC "Architectural and interior design firm McAlpine has garnered attention throughout the country for their distinct ability to design homes that are modern in expression but classical in order. In Romantic Modernism, founder Bobby McAlpine offers an exclusive look at a collection of residences that embrace modernism, classicism, and romanticism." —VERANDA“The poetic words in his latest release match the images with McAlpine’s signature flair.“ —GARDEN & GUN“Readers are not only wowed by the striking photography but also introduced to new viewpoints within the vernacular of architecture.” —ATLANTA HOMES & LIFESTYLES

David Zwirner Michaël Borremans: Fire from the Sun
Book SynopsisThe first in a series of small-format publications devoted to single bodies of work, Fire from the Sun highlights Michaël Borremans’s new work, which features toddlers engaged in playful but mysterious acts with sinister overtones and insinuations of violence. Known for his ability to recall classical painting, both through technical mastery and subject matter, Borremans’s depiction of the uncanny, the perhaps secret, the bizarre, often surprises, sometimes disturbs the viewer. In this series of work, children are presented alone or in groups against a studio-like backdrop that negates time and space, while underlining the theatrical atmosphere and artifice that exists throughout Borremans’s recent work. Reminiscent of cherubs in Renaissance paintings, the toddlers appear as allegories of the human condition, their archetypal innocence contrasted with their suggested deviousness. In his accompanying essay, critic and curator Michael Bracewell takes an in-depth look into specific paintings, tackling both the highly charged subject matter and the masterly command of the medium. He writes, “The art of Michaël Borremans seems always to have been predicated on a confluence of enigma, ambiguity, and painterly poetics—accosting beauty with strangeness; making historic Romanticism subjugate to mysterious controlling forces that are neither crudely malevolent nor necessarily benign.” Published on the occasion of Borremans’s eponymous exhibition at David Zwirner in Hong Kong, this publication is available in both English only and English and traditional Chinese editions.

Loft Publications Ibiza Blakstad Houses
Book SynopsisThe definitive monograph on the ideas and work of the Canadian-born (of Norwegian ancestry), Florence-trained, Ibiza-based architect. The fusion of Ibizan traditions with modern function, form, and taste is the hallmark of Blackstad’s projects, which were dedicated to conserving the cultural significance of the island within today’s architecture. Rolph Blackstad exhaustively studied Ibizan architecture when it was still a living millennial tradition, with peasant builders working with rules passed down by word of mouth from father to son. The architect’s study of these builders formed the basis of his research, design and building for more than 40 years. This book is a tribute to Blackstad's work in the wake of his recent death. In it, the reader will discover an unbroken tradition reaching back to distant origins; a design based on historical Mediterranean architecture, combining style and building techniques to suit contemporary lifestyles.
