  • Birkhauser Herzog & de Meuron Transforming Park Avenue

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisHow to deal with historic buildings has long been a core issue of the international architectural discourse. Herzog & de Meuron began addressing the potential of existing structures very early on: the maintenance and alteration of buildings are among the key strategies of the architects. For the Park Avenue Armory in New York, Herzog & de Meuron have designed a new model for dealing with monuments. The historical building was opened in 1881 on the Upper East Side of Manhattan as a meeting place and training ground for the National Guard, and boasts a rich mixture of different styles. Herzog & de Meuron developed a multifaceted strategy for the transformation of the building, now used as a cultural center, that allows for a combination of restoration, transformation, and innovation. From the exposing of historic structures to the addition of new elements, the architecture gained new vibrancy from the considered entanglement of different aspects. In the current debate, this departure from the practice of historic preservation in the United States is, beyond its value as an actual example, a unique contribution that unfolds in close reference to material. It is exemplary and groundbreaking.

Book SynopsisThe question of composition and spatial qualities arises in every urban design concept or intervention in the spatial structure of urban public squares. How are the essential elements involved: dimension, proportion, alignment, cohesion, accesses, shaping of focus point and of edges like surfaces and materials? How do they contribute to a character of urban space with which residents can identify? Comparing historical examples with current designs aids one in visualizing spatial effect. Similar to a floor planmanualfor buildings,Platzatlas allows the user to evaluate spatial conditions for movement and rest based on comparable existing urban squares. The book offers the planner a comparative example for most conditions (shape, size, location, topography, and so on). Seventy European urban squares are presented and explained with the most important characteristics in a consistent manner in as-built plan, ground plan, section, and axonometric projection.

Book SynopsisThe private single family house is still very much the preferred choice of home. Yet in recent years there have been many changes not only in the personal situations of the residents, their expectations and desires, but also in the rising costs of energy and raw materials. This has meant that issues such as multi-functionalism, the use of innovative building materials or energy-efficient building methods are increasing in significance. In this completely revised and expanded second edition these topical developments have been taken into consideration. The organisation and layout of the first volume, with its concise and detailed project documentation, has been retained. The authors introduce floor plan solutions using contemporary projects which bear in mind changing family structures. At the same time, the contributions provide an in-depth introduction to planning single family houses, from the design of the floor plan to useful tips for the realisation. In addition to this fundamental information, 22 projects are documented, providing ideas and inspiration for planners, students and clients. The international selection of projects highlights current trends in planning and designing single family housing and reveals the tried and tested basics.

Book SynopsisThe image of open working and living spaces flooded with light has, more than any other, become fixed in our minds as a symbol of modernity and the spirit of the times. While the workplace has always been the focus of ergonomic studies and optimization with respect to a good provision of daylight, large glass surfaces have now become the order of the day for living spaces as well. But does this automatically make for better illumination? Taking this question as its starting point, the publication Illuminating thematizes central aspects of light planning, including the connection between the provision of daylight and architectural design, building orientation, the nature of the facade, the ground plan, comfort, and the proportions and atmosphere of rooms. In the process, general characteristics and fundamental principles as well as subtle facets of an intelligent treatment of daylight are discussed and critically examined within an expanded architecture- and culture-historical context.Table of ContentsVorwort, Klaus Spechtenhauser, Michelle Corrodi Was das Kunstlicht aus dem Tag macht, einführendes Essay von Gerhard Auer Richtig belichtet – wesentliche Aspekte der Tageslichtplanung im Kontext des Wohnens, Klaus Spechtenhauser, Michelle Corrodi Licht, Sicht, Architektur – über die wechselseitige Beziehung zwischen Tageslicht und Architektur, Klaus Spechtenhauser, Michelle Corrodi Situation und Reaktion – Typologie, Grundriss und Struktur des Gebäudes in Abhängigkeit von der Orientierung, Klaus Spechtenhauser, Michelle Corrodi Raumproportionen und Fensterflächen – planerische Einflussmöglichkeiten für gute Belichtungsverhältnisse in Wohnräumen, Klaus Spechtenhauser, Michelle Corrodi Raum und Wahrnehmung – die Inszenierung des Raumes durch Licht und Schatten, Klaus Spechtenhauser, Michelle Corrodi Raumwirkung und Behaglichkeit – Parameter die die Raumwirkung beeinflussen, Klaus Spechtenhauser, Michelle Corrodi Licht Räume – Anregungen für die Planung und Einbindung von Tageslicht in den Entwurfs- und Bauprozess, Klaus Spechtenhauser, Michelle Corrodi Biografien Literaturnachweis

Book SynopsisPhylum H describes a very special architectural task: constructing a hospital. Brunet Saunier Architecture is dedicated to this type of research and further development. Their process is based on intensive research on the functional procedures required in medicine, social demands, and aesthetic possibilities. With these complex ideas, their plans become fascinating time capsules. On one hand, the analytical gaze looks to the past, searching for the medical, historical, and typological elements of the function of hospitals. On the other, potential new technologies, and practices for life and treatment are also examined. In the present, this results in unique buildings distinguished by a sophisticated mastery of flexible spatial structure and integrative design. They create a place for technology, knowledge, work, and social life—for both today and tomorrow. This illustrated volume discusses this unique creative process, using sketches, interviews, 3-D models, blueprints, and photographs.Bilingual: English and French.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe Clyfford Still Museum was designed by the leading architectural practice Allied Works and its founder, Brad Cloepfil. The building creates space for the voice and artistic vision of American painter Clyfford Still (1904–1980), housing the vast majority of his creative output over a sixty-year period. The museum’s design is inspired by the work of Still and by its monumental context: the site is located at the intersection of prairie and mountains, within an urban district of major cultural buildings, vacant lots, historic housing, and new development. The building looks to the earth as a source of silence and profound connection to the elemental forces the artist explored through his painting. This publication presents the vision and realization of the museum from initial concepts to completion. A rich collection of stories, artifacts, documents, and conversations trace the evolution of the building and Allied Works’ unique creative process. New essays and photography examine its significance within contemporary architectural discourse and the singular experience of the completed work.

They initiate artistic processes in urban space and allow realms of experience, which interrupt everyday life and open up gridlocked horizons of expectation, to emerge. This volume documents the art and exhibition projects, which are exemplary of that, realised by the Academy of Another City as an artistic platform of the International Building Exhibition IBA Hamburg 2009 and 2010. It furthermore discusses topics such as development and expectations of public space, freedom, responsibility, urban development, gentrification and cultural education from the perspectives of art and urban planning, cultural science, philosophy, and pedagogy.

The objective of the design was to translate the landscape and the elements into the language of architecture, creating a unique ensemble in harmony with the genius loci, or the spirit of the place. The building rises up out of the landscape like a mountain massif, while a “floating” cloudlike roof surrounds it. This publication shows the significance of this “stage of urban life” in the historical context of China’s opera and concert houses. Book SynopsisBilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/english) The realization is gradually dawning in Europe that many immigrants from Muslim countries are here to stay and are seeking to be naturalized— and therefore have the right to build buildings in which to practice their religion. The current building activities frequently cause tension, also for esthetic reasons, within society well into the mosque associations. The question of how the structure and appearance of a mosque can gain acceptance by society is a subject of heated debate especially in Western Europe.14 interior architect students from RheinMain University have pursued this question and studied the traditional spatial concepts of mosques creatively. The range of ideal-typical designs shows not only the rich design potential harbored by this construction task, but also how contact between Islam and a western context could lead to a new, intercultural architecture, which reflects the reality of our living environment, without compromising commitment to tradition.

Book SynopsisArchitecture and urban development of the 1960s and 1970s have now become part of everyday heritage protection and the subject of an interdisciplinary discourse. It is redevelopment practices that have emerged as the actual hurdle with regard to responsible and careful approaches to this heritage. It is not the basic heritage worthiness of this construction era that is questioned, but the possibilities to preserve it successfully. Therefore examples and evidence have to be found to show whether and how these heritage buildings can be adapted to present-day economic, safetyrelated and ecological requirements. Denkmal Ost-Moderne II is based on the conference of the same name and presents current viewpoints and examples from heritage protection practice, including inventorization: how can one make and justify a selection from the enormous range of buildings available? The credibility of heritage protection with regard to post-war modernity depends on this to a significant extent.

Book Synopsis The Bauhaus Building in Dessau, designed by Walter Gropius in 1926, represents a "built manifesto of Bauhaus ideas" and is one of modernism’s most important buildings. Together with the associated Masters’ Houses (Meisterhäuser), the Houses with Balcony Access (Laubenganghäuser) in Dessau, and Bauhaus buildings in Weimar and Bernau, it is included in UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The book focuses on strategies for preserving the Bauhaus Building. It presents the building—and its eventful history—from its construction to its destruction, rebuilding, and restoration. Using texts, photographs, and numerous blueprints, the book provides a detailed exploration of specific aspects of the architecture—such as the building’s outer shell, materials, construction, color scheme, and surfaces—and the long-term preservation concept for the site. Book Synopsis Bilingual edition (English/German) / Zweisprachige Ausgabe (deutsch/englisch) In recent years, few German buildings have received as much public attention as the capital’s new airport, designed by von Gerkan, Marg and Partners Architects. Since opening in October 2020, BER can now be experienced by everyone. This volume of the gmp FOCUS series offers insight into the design and planning of the airport, which is characterized by short distances, a high degree of modularity, and flexibility of use. Based on a universal planning and design manual, all elements of the airport are integrated into an axial system and form an architectural-functional unit. An essay by architecture critic Falk Jaeger and an interview with the designing architects provide background information on the project.

Book SynopsisEnmeshed in Hong Kong’s densely woven urban fabric, wedged between its towering mixed-use complexes and perched along its steep hillsides, sits a network of more than 500 miniature public parks comprising the smallest unit of the city’s public open space network. Though plentiful, these so-called Sitting-out Areas – referred to locally as 三角屎坑 (literally: a “three-cornered shit pit”) – have never been considered in terms of the collective resource they have the potential to be. This book presents a series of critical essays revealing the city’s Sitting-out Areas in relation to Hong Kong’s planning histories and shifting terrains, while also tracking how these spatial fragments have been shaped by concepts of publicness, accessibility and regulation. The second half of the book presents 44 richly illustrated case studies revealing the variety and idiosyncrasies of Hong Kong’s smallest open spaces. Ultimately, the book argues that we can understand the high-density city not only through its buildings, but through the character and potency of its interstitial landscapes.Table of ContentsFrontmatter -- Preface -- Contents -- PART 1: Contexts -- Introduction -- Hong Kong Terra Infirma: A City’s Defiance of Its Slippery Slopes -- Between the In-between: Research Findings on Data-Driven Strategic Urban Design -- On Imported Planning Policies: Adaptability and Resilience of a Small Public Open Space Typology -- Ambiguous Topologies of Public Open Space in Hong Kong: Stairs, Alleyways, Sitting-out Areas, Parks, Playgrounds, Privately Owned Public Spaces and Vacant Lots -- Reassembling the Case Study: Critical Analysis and Design Production in the Studio -- PART 2: Cases -- Index -- Lapse -- Misfit -- Rift -- Littoral -- Gap -- Lacuna -- Authors -- Acknowledgments

Jan Herres leistet in diesem Buch Pionierarbeit.
