Batsford Ltd Industrial Britain: An Architectural History
Book SynopsisA fascinating insight into Britain’s industrial past as evidenced by its buildings, richly illustrated with intricate line drawings. Industrial Britain goes far beyond the mills and machine houses of the Industrial Revolution to give an engaging insight into Britain’s industrial heritage. It looks at the power stations and monumental bridges of Britain, including the buildings and engineering projects associated with the distribution of manufactured goods – docks, canals, railways and warehouses. The gasworks Temples of mass production The mill Warehouse and manufactory Dock and harbour buildings Water power and water storage Waterways: canals and rivers The railway age Breweries and oast houses Markets and exchanges The twentieth century: industry on greenfield sites It’s a story of industrial development, but also a story of its ultimate decline. As manufacturing has been increasingly replaced by services, new uses have been found for at least some of the country’s great industrial buildings. Not least as containers for art and heritage, such as the Bankside Power Station (Tate Modern) and Salts Mill. Other buildings featured are still used as originally intended today, such as Smithfield Market in London and the Shepherd Neame brewery in Faversham. Illustrated throughout with over 200 original line drawings, Industrial Britain is a celebration of industrial architecture and its enduring legacy.Trade Review‘Not only a record of the buildings that tell the story of a rapidly industrialising nation but a testament to their importance in the history of British architecture. … A timely reminder of both our continued reliance on heavy industry and the threatened heritage of Britain’s industrial landscapes’ -- InigoTable of ContentsIntroduction Britain’s industrial heritage Fire, forge and furnace The watermill and windmill The power station The gasworks Temples of mass production: the mill Warehouse and manufactory Dock and harbour buildings Water power and water storage Waterways: canals and rivers The railway age Breweries and oast houses Markets and exchanges The twentieth century: industry on greenfield sites Postscript Bibliography Index

Whittles Publishing One Great George Street: The Headquarters
Book SynopsisThis book is the most thorough study yet undertaken of the headquarters building of the Institution of Civil Engineers in Great George Street, London, SW1. It considers how the building visually represents the authority of the profession and discusses not only the architecture and technology of the building but also the social relationships that underpin the structure. Few headquarter buildings associated with the professions have been subject to serious historical study; in effect they are anonymous buildings passed by each day almost without comment. The aim of this study is to show that such buildings have a story to tell, that they and their contents are more than just 'mute objects' but give valuable insights into the organisation occupying the building. The Great George Street building, which was constructed over a thirty-seven month interval from 1910 to 1913, is surprisingly barely mentioned by architectural historians and received only briefest acknowledgement in the building press of the day.The story has relevance to all those other professional associations that occupy a large headquarters building or council chamber and anyone who is interested in architecture and construction history.Trade Review'...an equally worthy, companion piece. ...covers the planning, design and construction of the ICE's headquarters. ...there are some gems... One Great George Street is about bricks and mortar and plaster and steel, but one man in particular shines through. Driving the rebuild was Sir William White...' Whittles Publishing British Piers and Pier Railways
Book SynopsisThe British have always had a special affinity for their coastal resorts and piers are the epitome of the British seaside. This book takes the reader on a clockwise tour of our islands, stopping at every pier and walking through their histories. Yet this is not just a tour of the pier, for it is not the pier that makes the history, but the people who work and walk along it. Within these pages the reader will meet a prizefighter who achieved fame in a very different sport; learn of several 'professors' whose talents were solely being able to leap from the pier; discover why man would ever want to fly from a pier; meet the former Beatle who worked for a pier company; read about the ferries and steamers that carried visitors; the fires which are an ever-present danger; the men who designed and built the piers along with the entertainers, characters, enthusiasts and entrepreneurs who made the piers. Fascinating information is included on how piers became longer or shorter, which piers served as part of the Royal Navy during two World Wars, and the tremendous amount of work and effort it takes to keep the piers open to the public today. Several piers have embedded rails, with some still being used by trains or trams. These pier railways are described in detail: the engineering, the designs and the changes over the years. While electricity is the sole motive power today, these had once been either steam-driven, pulled by horses, moved by hand or even, in one example, wind-powered by a sail! With over one hundred photographs, both old and new, this is a tour of the coast of the mainland and two islands. Piers which sadly have not survived are included as well as those which never got off the ground (or the shoreline). It reveals why they were built, how they were repurposed over the years, and their role in the future. Join the tour and recall the sea air, candy floss, the music, the sounds of a holiday, that day trip, an encounter, a rendezvous or special memory

Bodleian Library New Bodleian - Making the Weston Library
Book SynopsisIn 1934 Sir Giles Gilbert Scott began work on designs for a substantial new library building opposite the Old Bodleian Library site in Broad Street, Oxford in order to provide much-needed space for the growing numbers of books housed in the library and the number of readers using them. Opened in 1946 (having been delayed by the Second World War), for seventy years the New Bodleian served the academic community and readers visiting Oxford, housing 3.5 million items. Scott’s innovative designs meant that the New Bodleian became a Grade II-listed building in 2003. In 2009, thanks to a generous bequest from the Garfield Weston Foundation, plans got underway for a complete refurbishment of the building to meet the needs of twenty-first-century research and the Bodleian’s expanding collections. The architects Wilkinson Eyre were appointed to develop the project adapting the Grade II listed building for its new use as a special collections library while keeping the façade intact. Their brief was to redesign reading rooms for the consultation of rare books, manuscripts, archives, music and maps, provide new research facilities (including support for digital scholarship), new teaching facilities, improved conservation laboratories, state-of-the-art storage for Bodleian Libraries' valuable special collections and enhanced public access through a new entrance hall and exhibition space. This book tells the story of how the vision for the Weston Library was realized. Like the project itself, it represents a collaboration between clients and consultants as they place the project in context, describing in detail the many architectural, academic, curatorial and heritage issues addressed throughout the process, and the challenges of meeting the needs of an internationally renowned, four-hundred-year-old institution in the twenty-first century.

Liverpool University Press From Palace to Power: An Illustrated History of
Book SynopsisFrom Palace to Power: an IIlustrated history of Whitehall is the 400-year story -- in contemporary pictures, maps and photographs, as well as letters and diaries -- of the historical transformation of 'The Street' recognised throughout the world as a symbol of Government. The illustrations have been gathered from diverse sources: some hang as oil paintings in the corridors of power, known only to the privileged who occupy these offices. Others have been gleaned from contemporary journals, old sepia prints and postcards from the early days of the camera. Extended captions to the 120 illustrations, the 8-page coloured plate section, map endpapers -- as well as a select bibliography, chronology, list of statues in Whitehall, and index -- make this book easy to read and follow for the historian and the browser. In this new work, which has taken five years to research, Susan Foreman has created a vivid image of how the most pre-eminent street in Britain has changed, and how the political fortunes of its dramatis personae have left their mark.Trade Review"Probably the book on Whitehall. . . . Despite the numerous historians during its long history, Whitehall has never been the subject of a work quite like this. Two Rivers Press Picture Palace to Penny Plunge: Reading's Cinemas
Book SynopsisTwenty different cinemas have graced Reading's streets over the years, many long forgotten and some of the earliest very short-lived. Picture Palace to Penny Plunge tells the story of the era of the single-screen cinema in Reading, from the travelling shows at the turn of the twentieth century, its heyday with the Vaudeville Electric Theatre in the 20s, through to today's multiscreen entertainment 'villages' and outdoor screenings. It traces the technological developments and how they influenced the types of buildings, the numbers of seats, prices, programmes, refreshments and ownership. It describes each cinema, in the order of its opening, and includes appendices listing some of the films made in or near Reading, and some of the film actors and directors with Reading connections. Two Rivers Press Signs of the Times: Reading's memorials
Book SynopsisWhich memorial’s unveiling were the public barred from, so that no disruption could be caused by suffragettes? Why is a Danish prisoner of war remembered in Reading? Who was Goldwin Smith, whose birthplace is marked by a plaque on Friar Street? Did the sculptor responsible for the lion in the Forbury really commit suicide because of it? How many times did Queen Victoria visit Reading, and did she like her statue? The stories behind Reading’s memorials bring the people and events of Reading’s past to life. This book describes aspects of the town’s history by considering some of its – often not well known – plaques, statues and monuments. Even the better known memorials have secrets to yield in the tales of their origins. With descriptions of where the memorials can be found, along with photographs to help identification, the book reveals vivid glimpses of life in Victorian Reading, and reminds us of the physical, as well as social legacy, our forebears left behind them.

GOST Books Questions (After Brecht)
Book SynopsisDuring the summers of 2017 and 2018, Karen Knorr was given a carte blanche to photograph the building site of the disused Art-Deco Department store in Paris, La Samaritaine. The resulting photographs, infused with playful fantasy and surrealism, were taken with a large format camera and transformed with solarization. They are accompanied by lines from Brecht’s poem: Questions from a Worker Who Reads (1935). These photographs record and document a labour in progress, yet the construction workers have exited and the building is built as if by magic.

The Armchair Traveller at the Bookhaus No. 10: The Geography of Power at Downing Street
Book SynopsisFronted by one of the world's most iconic doors, 10 Downing Street is the home and office of the British Prime Minister and the heart of British politics. This is the story of the intimately entwined relationships between the house and its post-war residents, telling how each occupant's use and modification of the building reveals their own values and approaches to the office of Prime Minister. Number 10 was designed in the late seventeenth century as little more than a place of residence, with no foresight of its current purpose, meaning that constant adaptation has been necessary to accommodate the changing role and requirements of the premiership. Written by Number 10's first ever `Researcher in Residence', with unprecedented access to people and papers, 10 Downing Street: The Geography of Power sheds new light on unexplored corners of Prime Ministers' lives. The book reveals how and why Prime Ministers have stamped their personalities and philosophies upon Number 10, and how the building has constrained the ability of some Prime Ministers to perform the role. Both fascinating and extremely revealing, this is an intimate account of power and the building at its core. It is essential reading for anyone interested in the nature of British politics.

Columbia Books on Architecture and the City Columbia in Manhattanville
Book SynopsisIn 2003, Columbia University began planning an expansion into neighboring Manhattanville, the site of the soon-to-open campus designed by the Renzo Piano Building Workshop and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. The story of the project is a complex one-a university bursting at the seams, the changing imperatives of research facilities, large-scale investment in underground infrastructures, a controversial use of eminent domain, the commissioning of celebrated architects, and a remarkable campaign of community engagement all combining to reshape the public face of a venerable institution. Bringing together conversations with the architects and planners designing the Manhattanville campus, the educators who will inhabit its buildings, and essays from urban and architectural historians, this book both documents the making of Manhattanville and engages the contested history of public planning and the private university. Featuring contributions from Amale Andraos, Carol Becker, Elizabeth Diller, Steven Gregory, Maxine Griffith, Tom Jessell, Robert Kasdin, Laura Kurgan, Reinhold Martin, Lois Mazzitelli, Philip Palmgren, Charles Renfro, Marilyn Taylor, and Anthony Vaccione.

Birkhauser Freestanding Houses: A Housing Typology
Book SynopsisTo continue developing existing building types in an intelligent way is a crucial task in the field of residential building. For the success of the individual design, as well as for ensuring that tried and tested structures can be utilized, repeated, and varied, a deeper grasp of the underlying types is indispensable. For this typology of residential buildings, the authors have developed systematic new presentations of the most innovative types. Each individual volume lays out the possibilities for using and transforming a particular form of residential structure. The fourth volume deals with the types of freestanding houses, whose all-around orientation allows for the optimal arrangement of all dwellings. A presentation of the freestanding house as an isolated element and as a building block for larger structures is followed by discussions of topics such as self-sufficiency versus neighborhoods, "Raumplan" versus "plan libre," and individuality versus density. Within each type, variants are distinguished according to type of access, number of floors, etc. The range of possible solutions is presented in uniform ground plans and sections newly drawn to scale.

Birkhauser Building with Water: Concepts Typology Design
Book SynopsisWater has been an important topic in architecture and urban planning for years. The revitalization of the waterfront has been a prevalent trend in cities around the world. On the other hand, architecture also had to respond to the threat of floods. The theme of Building with Water is the use of water in architecture. It presents buildings that explicitly refer to water in their design and form. It establishes a typology of building by the water: residential structures, recreation facilities, industry and infrastructure, buildings for culture and art. The various design parameters are explored in four essays. Subsequently, twenty-two international projects are presented, organized according to their locations by a river, a lake or the sea. The authors’ concern is not to show luxurious buildings in privileged locations but rather presenting projects that seriously grapple with the main criterion of the location—namely, water—in an ecologically sustainable way and respond to it with their design. Where Water meets the Land: The Rediscovery of the Waterfront Chris Zevenbergen Towards Flood Resilient Urban Environments A Typology of Building on Water: Arts and Culture Recreation Living Industry and Infrastructure LAKE Floating House, Lake Huron, Canada Lake Whitney Water Treatment Plant, Hamden, USA Aluminium Forest, Houten, The Netherlands RIVER Silodam, Amsterdam, The Netherlands Maison Flottante, Chatou, France Traffic Guard Building, Nijmegen, The Netherlands Island in the Mur, Graz, Austria Elbe Philharmonic Hall, Hamburg, Germany Science Centre, Hamburg, Germany SEA Ponte Parodi, Genoa, Italy Harbour Bath, Copenhagen, Denmark Kastrup Sea Bath, Copenhagen, Denmark East Beach Café, Littlehampton, UK Performing Arts Centre, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston, USA Oslo National Opera House, Oslo, Norway Opera Copenhagen, Copenhagen, Denmark Seoul Performing Arts Center, Seoul, South Korea Seoul Commune, Seoul, South Korea Jelly-fish House, San Francisco, USA Wave Garden, San Francisco, USA WISA Wooden Hotel, Helsinki, Finland Ex Arsenale Conference Centre, La Maddalena, Italy About the Authors Illustration Credits

Birkhauser Constructing Shadows: Pergolas, Pavilions, Tents,
Book SynopsisTrees are ideal sources of shade; where they cannot be used, their function is taken over by tents, pergolas, and pavilions. In the context of global warming, shade-providing construction is becoming an increasingly important building task. In Part One of this book, specialists in the field present the typical forms of shade-providing construction as well as the design approach associated with each. Part Two presents easily consultable overviews of 140 plants that have proven to be effective givers of shade in temperate, subtropical, and tropical zones. Part Three presents thirty built projects by celebrated architects and landscape architects from five continents. These constructions illustrate a wide variety of functions and scales and cover various climatic zones and cultural contexts. All structures are constructionally and systematically analyzed with texts, true-to-scale drawings, and photographs from their foundations to their connections and the shadows they cast.Table of ContentsContents Essays Plants - Shadow Constructive Design of Small Buildings: Handbook Pergolas: Functions, Forms, and Construction Elements Shade-providing Small Buildings in Landscaping and Landscape Architecture Cables in Landscape Architecture: The MFO Park Teaching about Shadows Shade-providing Tents: On the Design and Construction of Lightwight Canvas Structures Plants Overview Plants Clinging Rootlets, Creepers, Twiners, Tendrils, and Scrambling Climbers Projects 1. Birkhauser My Desk is my Castle: Exploring Personalization
Book SynopsisThe desk is a place of work and of action, but it also serves as a place to exhibit personal things and preferences. Thus it always characterizes in two ways a material and symbolic unity. The desk is not only very informative in itself, but also must always be studied and understood in the context of its cultural, gender-specific, and field-related surroundings. The focus of this study is a comparative analysis of the use of desks. Desks in insurance companies, banks, administrative authorities, call centers, and design studios in twelve countries on all continents were studied. This publication presents the results in the form of extensive visual material, empirical analyses, and critical essays. The study was carried out by the Köln International School of Design (KISD) in collaboration with universities in Hong Kong; New York; Seoul; Taipei; Curitiba, Brazil; Pune, India; Auckland; Milan; and Fukuoka, Japan.

Birkhauser Libraries: A Design Manual
Book SynopsisLibraries as a building type have been subjected to substantial changes in particular in the past ten years. Milestones such as Rem Koolhaas’ Seattle Central Library from 2004 reinvented the typology completely and reflected a development from elitist temple of learning to a public living room. Hybrids between library and department store or theater were conceived. Today, the ubiquity of electronic devices and media needs to be taken into account by the designer: every new library has areas without any books now. This work of reference explains systematically all technological and planning requirements of library design. Special features such as RFID, signage, acoustics or specific structural load issues are explained in texts by experts from the fields of architecture and library science. Finally, approximately 40 best-practice case studies of contemporary library design are documented extensively. They are organized in four categories – national libraries, large public libraries, small public libraries, university libraries – and comprise high-profile examples such as Jo Coenen’s Openbare Bibliotheek Amsterdam, Alvaro Siza’s Public Library Viana do Castelo in Portugal or Mecanoo’s Library of Birmingham from 2013.

Birkhauser Identity: New Commercial, Cultural and Mobility
Book SynopsisThe international and multidisciplinary practice GRAFT conceives of itself as a label for architecture, urban design, product design, and music. GRAFT calls itself a "hybrid office" and produces dynamic architectural designs for standard commissions; however, the architects also initiate their own projects and system solutions for tasks with a social, ecological, or esthetic emphasis. The book presents buildings by GRAFT in the fields of culture, offices, brand architecture, retail, and mobility. It contains about forty generously illustrated projects that document a wide range of work in which the respective corporate culture is incorporated in GRAFT’s sophisticated architectural language. Dialectic essays focus on the practice’s key themes, such as the debate on urban identity or mobility transition.

Birkhauser An Accidental Masterpiece: Mies van der Rohe's
Book SynopsisThe Complex History of a Building With the temporary exhibition pavilion of the German Reich at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona, Mies van der Rohe designed an architectural icon, but also a controversial monument of the way the Weimar Republic portrayed itself. The building is one of the most unusual success stories in the history of architecture: Despite its short existence, its reputation grew steadily in the following decades, thanks in part to magnificent photographs. It was soon considered the constructed manifesto of the Modern Age, and its spatial and "ideational" ambitions were called "a milestone of Modern architecture." This comprehensively, broadly researched book portrays the building’s complex history and its political entanglement—up to and including its reconstruction according to van der Rohe’s plans at the original site between 1983 and 1986. Presumably the most important and influential architectural icon of the 20th century, uniquely documented and depicted On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Mies’ death and the Bauhaus centenary Many never before published photographs from archives in the US, Germany and Spain

Birkhauser Planning the Impossible: Urban Development and
Book SynopsisInternational airports have become an inherent part of many urban regions and key transport infrastructures for metropolitan economies. Yet they are also a source of tensions, often associated with the contrasting impacts of their operation. Taking the example of Charles de Gaulle airport (CDG) in Paris, the author analyzes the factors influencing urban development and the related spatial strategies. Step by step, she traces the history of the airport, examines prominent conflicts and their management by planners, and derives broader lessons. Intended for town planners, policy makers, and urban designers, the book makes an important contribution to understanding the challenges and assessing the effectiveness of planning approaches for airport regions.

Birkhauser Intimacies: The Architecture of Youssef Tohme
Book Synopsis Founded in 2008, the French-Lebanese firm of Youssef Tohme Architects and Associates has a delicate signature that takes the regional context as its starting point in developing an individual architectural language. By using a wide variety of materials that interact with the built environment, they create buildings that evolve over time alongside their inhabitants. The book documents twelve of the firm’s projects – from a single-family home to a museum, including urban interventions in Beirut, Paris, Bordeaux, Marseille, and Bucharest. The book also includes an essay that takes a comprehensive look at the working methods of this firm, focusing in particular on the dimension of time and the changes that occur as the buildings are used.

Book SynopsisSkilful architecture without gloss and bling bling In this book, Albert Kirchengast looks at three projects that may serve as models of further construction: Max Dudler, Franz Riepl, and Jonathan Sergison demonstrate an analogous approach to further construction at the scale levels of village, town and city. With their elementary “constructedness”, clean proportions and elegant interplay of volumes in the urban space, these projects embody a permanence without affectation and fashionable elements and provide a meaningful and unassuming background to everyday life. In doing so, they not only answer the pressing question of the ecology of coexistence, but also provide a benchmark within our heterogeneous design culture. Photos by Hélène Binet, David Schreyer and Stefan Müller as well as historical illustrations accompany the plea for a masterful ‘middle way’ in architecture. Birkhauser Architecture en temps de crise: Stratégies
Book SynopsisIn times of crisis: Quo vadis, architecture? Driven by the desire to create better worlds in the face of multiple crises, architects are attempting to rethink society, cities, and forms of living, to renew architecture and its materiality, and to develop a new aesthetic. As “tipping points,” crises offer new perspectives. Using the examples of historical as well as contemporary projects, Susanne Stacher examines different strategies in architecture. Ideas from science and philosophy (including those of Pierre-Henri Castel and Hartmut Rosa) provide a base from which to question ideas of progress, growth, nature, and society, which are represented in the selected architectural projects. This book spans a broad historical arc and includes a plea to reflect on the role of architecture and urbanism in times of ecological crisis. A historical and philosophical examination of architecture in times of crisis From archaism to the pursuit of deceleration, creation through destruction, and the reenchantment of the world Projects/concepts by Hans Hollein, Ebenezer Howard, Bjarke Ingels, Le Corbusier, Adolf Loos, Paul Otlet, Bernard Rudofsky, and others En temps de crise : Quo vadis, architecture ?

Braun Publishing AG Stations
Book SynopsisServing as gateways to the cities, train stations were the most important urban building developments at the turn of the 20th century. One century later this building mission is experiencing a fascinating renaissance. On a world-wide basis new facilities are emerging that need to fulfill various functions – very often they have to serve as shopping malls. However, even small stations for regional trains, subways and trams belong to the past, if they are purpose-built only. They also have an important influence on the urban identity. Just like the larger facilities, they have to be able to develop in a confined space and in a historically often densely built-up environment. 70 international projects were chosen to present current station architecture both in terms of long distance traffic as well as local transportation structures, including underground systems.

Braun Publishing AG Doctors' Practices
Book SynopsisThis book compiles contemporary designs worldwide that break through the stereotype of doctors’ practices as cold and often stressful environments. All projects aim at balancing medical technology and functionality with the need to create a welcoming and comfortable environment for the patients, visitors and staff. Apart from general practitioner’s offices, those of dentists and a wide variety of specialists are also presented. The solutions range from practice design in an existing building to entirely new buildings for one or more offices. Doctors’ Practices demonstrates today’s architectural responses to the complex demands of healthcare – a very fast-developing field.

Braun Publishing AG Pharmacies
Book SynopsisPharmacies constitute a special form of commercial architecture. The market for medicines, which is heavily regulated in most countries, has led to a veritable competition of the “atmosphere of space”: since where product and price can no longer provide a competitive advantage, customer loyalty must be created with other means. In addition to professional competence and familiarity with the customers, that becomes above all the ambiance. That in turn translates to the modern and hygienic pharmacy, together with a friendly and assuring spatial experience. The selected examples show the design sophistication with which pharmacies today, from a functional as well as atmospheric standpoint, set themselves apart from the historical chemists’ shelves – and the competitors.

Lars Muller Publishers Holocaust Memorial Berlin
Book SynopsisInescapably controversial, its very existence challenged by German intellectuals like Günter Grass, the Holocaust Memorial Berlin (or, as it's formally known, the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe) is now finished, some 16 years after it was first proposed. Architect Peter Eisenman's design, which filled a four-football-field-size parcel of land in the middle of Berlin with more than 2,700 concrete slabs, or stelae, was itself hotly debated, with some complaining that its abstractness, Eisenman's trademark, made it a monument that evoked no memories. As the debates give way to accounts of the experience of the space, the readers of this book, produced with Eisenman's cooperation, will be able to compare how successfully the architect's conception matches the reality. The intent is that the visitor, who finds himself winding his way through the concrete forest of varying heights, will be struck by how distant the busy city center seems, and how quiet and reflective--but not graveyard-like--the atmosphere is. Since the monument does not have a specific entrance or exit, visitors will be able to choose their own way in and out of the complex. Passing through the rows of slabs that lean almost imperceptibly and stand on seemingly unstable ground, visitors may experience a sensation of insecurity, and while that is mitigated in much of the site where the whole area is in view, at the center the surrounding slabs are 15 feet high. In this, one can sense the work of Richard Serra, who initally collaborated on the project but left when changes were called for. This volume offers a full picture of the process from conceptual and architectural drawings and digital plans to photographs of construction. It holds the narrative of a difficult task, turning "the place of no meaning," as Eisenman once referred to the site in the hopes of dispelling fears that he was trying to symbolize the deaths that took place during the Holocaust, into a confrontation with the past. The enormity and scale of the horror of the Holocaust is such that any attempt to represent it by traditional means is inevitably inadequate . . . Our memorial attempts to present a new idea of memory as distinct from nostalgia . . . We can only know the past today through a manifestation in the present. 65 illustrations

Lars Muller Publishers Data Centers: Edges of a Wired Nation
Book SynopsisQuestions of privacy, borders, and nationhood are increasingly shaping the way we think about all things digital. Data Centers brings together essays and photographic documentation that analyze recent and ongoing developments. Taking Switzerland as an example, the book takes a look at the country's data centers, law firms, corporations, and government institutions that are involved in the creation, maintenance, and regulation of digital infrastructures. Beneath the official storyline— Switzerland’s moderate climate, political stability, and relatively clean energy mix—the book uncovers a much more varied and sometimes contradictory set of narratives.
