Peeters Publishers Old Babylonian Texts from Dilbat, Sippar, and
Book SynopsisIn 1932 and 1939 F.M.Th. de Liagre Böhl (Professor of Assyriology at Leiden University) visited Iraq and bought many clay tablets, hundreds of which bear Old Babylonian texts: letters, contracts, and administrative documents. It was W.F. Leemans, specialist in that field, who was to publish the latter. His copies appeared in Volume One of the serial publication Tabulae cuneiformes a F.M.Th. de Liagre Böhl collectae Leidae conservatae (TLB I, four fascicles, 1954-1964). He made the texts accessible to the public by editing them in fascicles named Studia ad tabulas cuneiformes collectas a F.M.Th. de Liagre Böhl pertinentia (SLB). Many of them originate from Larsa and Lagaba. This is the fourth and last SLB fascicle. Although Leemans finished the manuscript a few years before he died (1991), it has remained unpublished until now. Over the years, several specialists have reviewed the text and have made small but valuable additions. The final edition is now available in this book, appearing in the PIHANS series as Volume 132, with texts from Sippar and Dilbat, and other places.

Peeters Publishers Private Associations in the Pontic Greek Cities
Book SynopsisThis book examines private associations from the Pontic Greek cities (6th century BC-3rd century AD), based on epigraphic evidence (205 inscriptions which record 114 associations). The approach is that of an ancient social historian and takes into consideration the participants, the practices and the impact of the phenomenon of these organisations, in order to understand Pontic society and the way it functioned at a smaller scale, that of the associations. It is arranged as chapters, plus a Glossary and two extensive appendices (catalogues of epigraphic sources and members). The book reveals that, in the Pontic area, the associations had a fragmentary character and were influenced by the political, social and economic evolution of the region, with a couple of cities on the western and northern shores pre-eminent; and secondly, that the Pontic associative phenomenon had, overall, a relatively marginal and time-limited role when compared with other parts of the ancient world (due not only to the state of the research of the Greek Black Sea settlements themselves but also to local characteristics).

Peeters Publishers Divine Names on the Spot: Towards a Dynamic
Book SynopsisAncient Greek and Semitic languages resorted to a large range of words to name the divine. Gods and goddesses were called by a variety of names and combinations of onomastic attributes. This broad lexicon of names is characterised by plurality and a tendency to build on different sequences of names; therefore, the Mapping Ancient Polytheisms project focuses on the process of naming the divine in order to better understand the ancient divine in terms of a plurality in the making. A fundamental rule for reading ancient divine names is to grasp them in their context – time and place, a ritual, the form of the discourse, a cultural milieu…: a deity is usually named according to a specific situation. From Artemis Eulochia to al-Lat, al-'Uzza and Manat, from Melqart to “my rock” in the biblical book of Psalms, this volume journeys between the sanctuary on Mount Gerizim and late antique magical practices, revisiting rituals, hymnic poetry, oaths of orators and philosophical prayers. While targeting different names in different contexts, the contributors draft theoretical propositions towards a dynamic approach of naming the divine in antiquity.

Peeters Publishers The Bearers of Business Letters in Roman Egypt
Book SynopsisIn the absence of a postal service available to all, letters exchanged between the inhabitants of Roman Egypt were most often transmitted with the help of informal bearers whose task was not limited to carrying a letter: they brought or collected goods, helped the recipients, sometimes received assistance, facilitated money transfer, performed escort and police duties, and more generally they were an essential link within a wide social network. This short study not only covers formal aspects, such as terminology or the place of the bearer in the structure of a business letter, but also provides a description of the role of the bearers and of their interaction with both senders and recipients.

Peeters Publishers Political Geographies of the Bronze Age Aegean:
Book SynopsisEven though the demise of the Minoan and Mycenaean palaces happened more than three millennia ago, opinions on the political geography of the Aegean during the Bronze Age (2500-1100 BC) have seen remarkable changes over the last century and discussions continue. Since the Early Bronze Age, both Crete and the Helladic Mainland witnessed the development of complex societies. The ways in which these were structured and how power was executed, however, remain debated. In this volume, which represents the proceedings of a three-day workshop that took place in Athens from May 29 to 31, 2018, leading scholars in the field of Aegean Archaeology continue these debates on the basis of theoretically informed views that incorporate the latest archaeological developments, derived from both surveys and excavations. The volume is structured around three themes: 1. Territories. Can political or other meaningful spatial organisations be recognised in our data? And how did territories relate to one another? What about boundaries? How can we integrate our data into a discussion of intra-and inter-territorial relationships. 2. Authority display. Can we recognise different levels or scales in visual representation of authority? Were Aegean societies faceless? 3. Forms of power. How was power exercised and how can we recognise this? What types of control (military, economic, religious, social, technological….) can be distinguished and to what extent was power individualised, concentrated, hereditary, institutionalised, corporate…..?

The confrontation of literary sources and archaeological data is important to try altogether to understand the implementation of dietary prohibitions peculiar to a religion, the limits of the practice of dietary prohibitions and their evolution over time. Food prohibitions and restrictions on commensality allow different religious groups to draw a line between “them” and “us”. The body of normative texts pertaining to religious and civil laws prohibiting the consumption of particular foods has often been studied for Judaism or Islam, less often for polytheisms, Zoroastrianism or Christianity. We intend to present the normative literature and to reflect on the limits of its implementation, relying on archaeozoology that can provide data on the discrepancy between norm and practice.

Peeters Publishers The Monasteries and Monks of Nubia
Book SynopsisThe aim of this book is to present the material record of Nubian monasticism in a systematic manner and to conduct a comparative analysis of this phenomenon. This book also addresses several fundamental issues, for instance the presence of various forms of monasticism (hermitages, laurae and coenobitic monasteries) in Nubia and their spatial organisation. The source base for reconstructing the monastic movement in Nubia, or rather life in individual monasteries, is largely archaeological and epigraphic. Looking beyond Nubia is motivated not only by the desire to find reference points in centres that influenced the formation of the Nubian civilisation, but also because such parallels are indispensable for the interpretation of archaeological finds. One of the fundamental questions posed repeatedly in this book concerns the models that inspired the creators of monastic communities in Nubia. The geographic arguments point primarily to Egypt, but other regions of the Late Antique East should not be ruled out prematurely. We have, for instance, sound evidence for Syrian influence on the culture of Christian Nubia, especially liturgy. Also Constantinople, a core region of the Eastern Mediterranean and the imperial capital, must be considered as a possible source of inspiration. Thus far, attempts to characterise Nubian monasticism in a synthetic manner have taken the form of short articles limited mostly to discussion of architectural features. In addition, with the notable exception of Adam ?ajtar’s ad-hoc publications spurred by the emergence of new evidence, no study published to date collects and discusses the various titles associated with the monastic milieu, investigating who stood at the head of coenobitic communities, what their internal organisation was like, and how the monastic, ecclesiastical and spiritual hierarchies were intertwined. Another area in need of investigation is the relationship between Nubian monks and society, including the roles they played in lay communities and whether they really ‘abandoned’ the world at large. The book seeks to determine whether the Nubian elites perceived monastics as a threat to their dominant position in the social hierarchy, or rather collaborated with monks, taking advantage of the fact that monasteries offered human resources with highly esteemed and useful skills that proved helpful, if not indispensable, in managing non-monastic communities ranging from individual settlements to the state.

Peeters Publishers Aelia Capitolina in Context: Roman Policy in
Book SynopsisThis book focuses upon the colony Aelia Capitolina founded by Hadrian on the ruins of Jerusalem, within the general context of his politics of Empire and in particular that of the new developments which had taken place in Judaea since the beginning of his reign. Our knowledge has recently been greatly enhanced thanks to the archaeological excavations carried out in and around Jerusalem. Those of the Shu'afat neighbourhood in north-eastern Jerusalem, 4 km north of the ancient Jerusalem, enlighten us as to what may have been the actual significance of the establishment of the new colony for the Judean Jews, while the excavations carried out in the Old City of Jerusalem allow us to date both the official foundation, presumably two years before the outbreak of the Bar Kokhba War, and the very beginning of the preparatory works, about a decade earlier. These data, in turn, enable us to infer that the founding of the new colony may be seen as one of the causes leading up to the Bar Kokhba War that was to break out a few years later.

Peeters Publishers Monastic Communities in Context: Monasteries,
Book SynopsisThe book explores socio-economic relations of monastic communities with the secular world of mainly rural Egypt in the 5th-8th c. Three case studies based on discrete corpora of documents (the archive of the Apions, the documentary dossier of the village of Aphrodito, the dossier of the Bawit monastery) shed light on different aspects of such relations. The questions addressed are the links of the monasteries with the topmost social and economic elites, the functioning of monasteries in a rural setting, and the internal workings of monastic organization. The case studies are followed by two chapters which discuss, respectively, the settings, actors, and values in monastic economies, and the activities related to patronage and social communication.

Peeters Publishers Seeking Justice in and out of Court: Dispute
Book SynopsisFamily squabbles, fights over real estate, disputes about financial transactions and assault cases were no less complex to resolve in Antiquity than they are in the modern world. The unique evidence from Greco-Roman and Late Antique Egypt shows a wide variety of mechanisms that could be used to settle interpersonal disputes and to maintain social order within the country. In addition to the delivery of justice by state courts or officials, attempts were made to settle disputes on a more informal level through recourse to family members, associations, divinities or religious leaders. The present volume assembles contributions by scholars studying dispute resolution or the effectiveness of law enforcement from different perspectives and different fields, with a particular focus on the transformation of the dispute process between the age of the Ptolemies and that of the Byzantine emperors.

Peeters Publishers An Approach to the Historical Geography of the
Book SynopsisThis book examines the historical geography of the southern Black Sea littoral in the first millennium BC. Notwithstanding the remarkable development of research on the Black Sea in antiquity over the last few decades, the southern littoral remains an area several aspects of which have still not been thoroughly studied, while the archaeological investigation has only very recently started to be held in numerous parts of the coast and in a more systematic way. This monograph aims to examine the most significant aspects of the historical geography of this region, in the light of all the written and archaeological evidence that is available so far: First of all, the littoral’s natural environment, namely the geographic stage on which the numerous peoples that inhabited it developed their civilisations and economies. Furthermore, the indigenous peoples of the littoral, most of which have never been given as detailed an examination as, for example, the Greek colonists there, and our knowledge of them is scanty. Of course, the Greek presence and colonisation in the southern Black Sea is also studied, as is the existence of other peoples, who were neither indigenous nor colonists but still had a presence in the littoral, whether as invaders (e.g. the Cimmerians), or as political overlords (e.g. the Persians). Finally, stress is laid on the urban development along the littoral: what kinds of settlements and installations were created, in which places, and with what frequency. Thus, the book offers for the first time in modern scholarship a detailed examination of the historical geography of the ca. 1000 km-long southern Black Sea littoral over the thousand years before Christ.

The Lombard antiquarian and humanist Giovanni Bartolomeo Marliano (1488-1566) bequeathed to the convent of Sant'Agostino in Rome – now the Biblioteca Angelica – a rich collection of manuscripts, compiled during years of study of the Greco-Latin classics. Among them is a select collection of Latin translations of Greek authors that, plausibly, Marliano had used in his humanistic training. The object of this work is one of these versions: Hesiod, Opera et dies (ms. Ang. lat. 420, fols. 66r-83v). The preliminary study investigates the genesis and possible authorship of this ad uerbum translation – richly illustrated with paratextual elements that make up an authentic commentary to the work – as well as the Greek models followed in its elaboration. Finally, a critical edition of the Hesiodic translation and its copious marginal notes is offered, which exemplifies the didactic and exegetical work of Renaissance Humanism on Hesiod's poem.

Peeters Publishers The Metallurgy of Bosporan Silver Coinage: Third
Book SynopsisWithin the historical background of the 3rd century AD, the study of Bosporan coin production is of especial interest. The turbulent events in the Roman empire and the northern Black Sea region called forth by pressure from nomadic peoples led to parallel progressive debasement of the antoninianus and Bosporan stater. This book explores the composition of Bosporan silver coinage of the 3rd century AD, re-examining traditional interpretations in the light of an entirely new programme of analyses of the coins, and thereby illustratating the inadequacy of small earlier analytical studies. The results of the examination of ca. 3000 staters from quite a number of Bosporan hoards, conducted in 2016–21 by the methods of XRF, EPMA, NRCA, FIB-FESEM-EDX, SEM-EDX, MC-ICP-MS lead isotope analysis, etc., have enabled a comprehensive understanding of the nature of Bosporan silver coinage, especially silvering techniques, in the 3rd century. The data of microchemical and metallurgical studies of coins indicate that from AD 227/8 to 286/7 (with interruptions), staters from silver or those containing some amounts of silver (and occasionally some amount of gold) were struck on the Bosporus. During this period, debasement of the Bosporan stater was occurring, transforming it from an electrum coin into silver and billon one (issued for almost 40 years - until AD 267/8) and, finally (since AD 275), to a copper coin with silver content of about 4-6% and coated with silver.

ARMT XXXIV is the sequel to ARMT XXXIII and continues the publication of epistolary texts from the royal archives of Mari relating to the accession to power of King Zimrî-Lîm. Once Bannum had disappeared, the king of Mari had to confront a part of the Bedouin population of his kingdom who, while recognising his supremacy, wanted to be autonomous. This confrontation took place while the troops of Ešnunna were moving northwards and the kingdom of Upper Mesopotamia (RHM) was disappearing. The book includes documents concerning the first generation of mâr yamîna kings and the conflict in general. On this occasion, the documents concerning Emâr, Tuttul and the chief of the Ašarugâyu, Ašmaṭ, are published. The texts are either unpublished or reprinted. Among the theses supported in this work, it is proposed to abandon the notion of war between Ešnunna and Mari at the beginning of Zimrî-Lîm's reign, but to speak of "Bedouin wars" instead of "revolt of the Mâr yamîna". The book includes an index of comments to the edition of the documents.

Peeters Publishers Bookkeeping without Writing: Early Administrative
Book SynopsisBookkeeping without Writing: Early Administrative Technologies in Context explores how non-literate systems of information storage were used in the late prehistoric and early historic periods in West Asia, before and alongside writing. The world’s earliest known written script, cuneiform, emerged as the bureaucratic tool of administration in the city-states of south Mesopotamia during the late fourth millennium BC. The invention of writing had a profound impact on daily life, as it enabled the efficient management and control of agricultural production, craft production, labour, and rations as wages. Writing has traditionally been viewed as one of the hallmarks of ‘civilisation’, alongside features such as permanent urban settlements, monumental architecture, social hierarchy and the presence of political and religious institutions. Writing is seen as necessary for complex society to operate and succeed, yet is this really the case? Are there alternatives? Non-written forms of information storage and transmission are known in West Asia from the Late Neolithic (ca 6000 BC) onwards. Crucially, they continue to be used, once writing is established and widespread, so cannot be dismissed as simple, primitive and ineffective forms of administration simply supplanted by writing. In other world regions and time-periods, a variety of non-literate forms of information storage are known. There are large, successful, and complex societies which do not use writing at all, instead thriving with alternative forms of information storage and transmission. This multidisciplinary book brings together papers from various specialists to explore how non-literate forms of information storage were used in West Asia from the Late Neolithic, and why they persisted into the first millennium BC. This is complimented by a range of comparative archaeological and historical examples of complex, non-written administrative systems from the ethnographic and historical record including ancient Egypt, Medieval Europe, Medieval West Africa and South America.

Peeters Publishers The Power of Images: The Poetics of Violence in
Book SynopsisThe publication of Keel’s Symbolism of the Biblical World (German 1972, English 1978) demonstrated the val-ue of ancient Near Eastern iconography for interpreting biblical texts. In the intervening decades since (and of) Keel’s work, iconographic exegesis of the Hebrew Bible has witnessed significant methodological and theoretical developments, many of which can be broadly characterized by an increasing concern with issues of histor(icit)y and contiguity in the image-text comparison. The present work represents a (re)turn to a phenomenological approach to iconographic exegesis that is especially concerned with how images and texts might mutually inform one another at the level of their respective poetics. As a test case for such a comparison, this volume examines how the phenomenon of violence figures in Lamentations 2 and in Ashurbanipal’s palace reliefs - specifically, one of the Battle of Til-Tuba programs (Southwest Palace, Room 33) and the lion hunt reliefs (North Palace, Room C). The project begins with a discussion of the neurological and cognitive relationship between seeing images with the eye and imagining them with the “mind’s eye” as a means of justifying such a phenomenological approach that compares how ancient artists and the biblical author construct the violent images that are seen and imagined in their works, respectively (ch. 1). It then conducts detailed analyses of the poetics of violent imagery in Lamentations 2 (chs. 2-3), the Battle of Til-Tuba reliefs (ch. 4), and Ashurbanipal’s lion hunt reliefs (ch. 5) before providing an extended comparison of the similar and divergent ways that violence figures in the literary and textual images of each piece (ch. 6). Overall, the volume profers new interpretive insights concerning the phenomenon of violence in the ancient Near Eastern artwork and Lamentations 2 specifically - particularly as it pertains to the poem’s construction of Yahweh’s and Zion’s bodies, its perspectival play, its manipulation of time, and the “power” of its imagery in eliciting the divine gaze. The project also demonstrates the utility of ancient Near Eastern art for illuminating not only what but also how a given phenomenon figures in biblical poetry and vice versa.

Peeters Publishers Monastic Microtheologies: Religious Expressions
Book SynopsisThe book reconstructs the theological concepts shared by the Theban monks for the first time based on documentary sources. It gleans scattered evidence from hundreds of private letters preserved on ostraca and, in several cases, papyri. Such documents do not expound on complex theological systems but use particular phrases, words and images loaded with religious meaning. These snapshots represent microtheologies – particular, fragmented realizations of the complex religious system. The book focuses on monastic status, use of the Bible, prayer and blessing, invocations of God and saints. etc. It also presents a big picture of a pessimistic worldview in which a human being is weak and constantly endangered, and God is the only one possessing the knowledge and means to rescue him from the vicissitudes of life. The book will be of interest to papyrologists, historians of late antiquity, historians of religion and theologians.

This book is the result of an international symposium held in Paris in 2017 on a subject undergoing profound renewal over recent decades, namely the writing practices of the ancient world. The project focused on territories commonly considered "peripheral" because they are seen as cultural frontiers. Yet these are places of dynamic processes of cultural change and invention of new ways of communication. Contacts with the Phoenicians, then the Punics, the Greeks and Italic peoples served as a breeding ground in the West for the creation of multiple alphabets and new writing practices, of which there are traces in all environments. Epigraphic documentation is particularly suited to the study of the engagement of even the lower status parts of the population in practices related to writing, in short to seize the potential of writing outside the high-level practice of composing literature, which was reserved for the elite.

Peeters Publishers The Achaemenids, the Black Sea and Beyond: New
Book SynopsisThe Achaemenids, the Black Sea and Beyond, a short and well-illustrated volume, presents some of the papers due to have been presented at a small conference in Constanta in 2020 that became victim to the public policy response to Covid. It is dedicated to Alexandru Avram, one of the intended participants, who died before submitting his paper. The remaining nine papers, with a balance towards the northern and southern Black Sea, are supplemented by an introduction from the editor in the form of a cut and reworked paper of 2019 (the full version appeared in Ancient West and East); he too died before he could complete his proper introduction. Two deaths have given life to this volume. It may appear a little uneven in its coverage of the Black Sea’s four shores, but it is a child of circumstance. The abstracts of some, but not all, of those who did not submit papers are included as an appendix.

Jewish identity has always been a highly disputed topic. Such a dispute increased with the first archaeological discovery of the so-called Iron Age “proto-Israelites” and the recent debates about the relationship between being a Jew and an Israeli citizen in the modern state of Israel. Notwithstanding a three thousand years old history, the name “Israel” continues to be used. Adopting a diachronic approach to the biblical text, this book retraces the history of the different ethnonyms related to the “chosen people” (“Israel”, “Jews/Judeans”, and “Hebrews”). Encompassing archaeological, epigraphic and literary evidence, it reassesses the role played by Jewish tradition in the development of concepts such as “peoplehood” and “group identity”, which, through the Christian heritage, resulted in the modern concept of Nation-State. The Bible, the Book, is thus not only a source for the orientalist but can also be a useful tradition that may help us to a better understanding of our societies and the relationships they maintain with each other.

Peeters Publishers Architecture, Iconography, and Text: New Studies
Book SynopsisThe papers published in this volume attempt to move scholarship forward in the interpretation of the Northwest Palace reliefs of Ashurnasirpal II, with particular focus on the intersection of their architectural setting, their loaded iconography, and the text of the so-called Standard Inscription incised across their faces. The papers deal with both the interpretation of the reliefs in their ancient setting and their modern reception and heuristic use across the boundaries of disciplines. They address direct and indirect interaction of iconography and text in physical space, the roles of scribes and artisans in the production of the architecture-iconography-text ensemble, along with its impact on ancient viewers. The ensemble’s impact on modern viewers, and particularly its reception in the nineteenth century, are also examined, as well as the application of its hermeneutic analysis to the study of Hebrew poetry.

Book SynopsisNames, images, and narratives are intimately related and frequently polysemous. As pieces of information on the gods, they convey fragments of knowledge and attempts to interpret the multifaceted complexity of the divine world. In what Robert Parker describes as an “archipelago”, images and narratives are like compasses used to approach the mapping of the gods. The different contributions collected in this volume, dealing with the Greek and the Semitic worlds (the two main areas of the “Mapping Ancient Polytheisms” project), explore connections but also discrepancies between these different semantics, in order to highlight specificities and commonalities in the onomastic and iconographic languages.
