  • Peeters Publishers Sealing and Seals on Texts from Kültepe Karum

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisIn studies of the Assyrian merchant community established at Kültepe (KARUM Kanesh, level 2) in Anatolia in the early second millennium B.C., the texts with their associated cylinder and stamp sealings found there have traditionally been investigated separately. This book specifically seeks to integrate glyptic and textual studies in a way helpful both to scholars of Old Assyrian and to those with an interest in seals and sealing in the ancient Near East. The combined study of texts and sealings illuminates commercial and socio-legal activity in fresh ways, whilst the stylistic analyses sharpens chronological arguments and throws light on the community's foreign contacts. The book consists of two parts. The first analyses the sealing practices (in general and per type of record, with a special chapter on witnesses) and the seals, their ownership, manufacture, styles, iconography and inscriptions. Special chapters deal with the archives of the KARUM (with a list of their locations) and with the dating of texts and seals (with a list of the eponyms). Part two is a catalogue of 677 seals. It consists of tables offering, in a condensed form, essential data from the text envelopes on which the seals have been impressed, and of drawings of each of them. Extensive indices, of names, eponyms, seal owners/users, seal inscriptions, texts and seals complete this well-documented volume.

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis posthumously published book was finished by the late Dr. Jan Zandee, Professor-Emeritus in Egyptology and the history of ancient religions. The 'Teachings' had indeed his interest for many years of his scholarly life. In the present book, a magnum opus, his earlier and latest findings are summarized. This Nag Hammadi-tractate, a pseudepigraphon using the name of the companion of St. Paul, is written in the form of the ancient sapiential literature. The Greek original may date from the early third century, the Coptic codex VII was created about A.D. 340. The theme of the writing is the battle of the soul against evil and the final victory with the additional and decisive help of God, Christ and the Holy Spirit. The author gives the Coptic text with translation and a rich commentary. Summaries, six excursusses and two indices (Greek and Coptic words) complete this fine book, a testimony of great learning.

  • Nederlands Instituut voor het Nabije Oosten (NINO) Dating Late XIXth Dynasty Ostraca

    10 in stock

Book SynopsisSince many ostraca from the environs of Deir el-Medina lack specific regnal year dates, dating them precisely is a tricky business. This volume attempts to provide comparative datings for 78 ostraca (and papyri) from the late XIXth dynasty. The method draws explicitly on the division of the gang into two sides and, crucially, makes full use (for the first time) of the specific ordering of workmen’s names to be found in documentation from this period. The archaeological context of the important body of late XIXth dynasty material from the Valley of the Kings is investigated and it is shown that the datings proposed here on comparative grounds correlate strongly with the grouping of the ostraca by excavation and find-site. The work is supported by a comprehensive index of the workmen by source and a concordance comparing the datings suggested here with those from other standard reference resources.

  • Nederlands Instituut voor het Nabije Oosten (NINO) The Book of the Dead of Gatseshen: Ancient

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThis volume is devoted to the analysis of the magical contents of a funerary papyrus belonging to the so-called “Book of the Dead” genre. The papyrus of Gatseshen, daughter of the High Priest of Amon Menkheperra (middle XXIst Dynasty), consists of almost 18 meters of beautifully written hieratic text and colourful vignettes. The author has attempted to reconstruct the history of composition and arrangement of this document, by investigating in detail the thematic connections between the different spells and vignettes. By comparing the layout of this papyrus with those produced in the same area and period, a new view of the funerary religion at Thebes during the XXIst Dynasty is outlined. The overall picture which can be gained by this comparative study is that of an innovative and lively tradition of funerary scrolls, which were used not only to protect the deceased during his journey in the netherworld, but also in order to express the religious ideas of its owners. A cd-rom containing colour photos of the papyrus is supplied with the volume.

Book SynopsisThis book provides an insight into the world of the priests of the Ezida temple in Borsippa, covering the period when this sanctuary dedicated to the god Nabû was Babylonia’s second most important place of worship (c. 750-484 BC). The backbone of the book is the extensive corpus of cuneiform texts that these priests have left behind. Discovered in the 19th century, these archives have largely remained unstudied. Apart from offering an edition of the texts (Part II), this study reconstructs the professional and social lives of Nabû’s priests, and outlines the workings of the cult of a major Babylonian deity (Part I). Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe wall paintings of several Theban tombs represent foreigners who present gifts that are sometimes typically Cretan or Aegean. Other foreigners, although labeled "Princes of Keftiu" (Crete), are represented as Asiatics. The aim of the present volume is to analyze these wall paintings in order to distinguish the Aegeans and their gifts. The author manages to establish their characteristics in nine Theban tombs, divides chronologically in two groups, and shows that the related figures reflect actual Aegeo-Egyptian relations in the time of the XVIIIth dynasty, down to c. 1470/1450 BC. This result is obtained by a careful comparison of represented gifts with undoubtedly Minoan objects and documents from the Aegean, especially Crete.

Book SynopsisThese proceedings of the conference held in Leuven from the 14th to the 16th of November 1985 contain thirty studies dealing with various aspects of the Phoenician civilization and its expansion around the Eastern Mediterranean in the first millenium B.C. Contributions referring to a geographic area, like Anatolia, the Aramaic world, the trade between the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, Cyprus, Greece, alternate with studies referring to the cult of Phoenician deities in the region concerned: Tanit, Resheph, Baal Saphon, Heracles. Other papers deal with Phoenician artefacts, institutions, or economic activities, as well as with Phoenician history according to Greek classical or Hellenistic authors. On the whole, the volume constitutes an up-to-date description of the Phoenician culture spreading in the East Mediterranean world from the beginning of the first millenium B.C. and having a lasting impact on the civilization of the countries involved.

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisThe archive of the Theban choachytes contains over 80 texts, Greek and demotic. They are largely private documents that together constitute the papers of a family of choachytes (undertakers). It is known since the beginnings of modern Egyptology and Papyrology as the "Hermias Archive" after the antagonist of the choachytes in a now famous Greek law suit kept in Turin. Although its bilingual information contributed in no uncertain measure to the decipherment of demotic, a large part of this fundamentally demotic archive is still not or not properly published. This Survey reviews for each text, Greek or Demotic, all relevant data in great detail and determines its exact place within the whole of the archive. The second half of the book presents the study of a number of special subjects that emerge from the contentts of the archive, such as the topography of Thebes (city and necropolis), prosopography, mummies and liturgies, but also more general subjects as onomastics, prices and transfer tax (enkyklion), and the diplomatics of the documents.

Index.

    1 in stock

Book Synopsis"Encomiastica from the Pierpont Morgan Library" continues a collaborative effort to make available in edition and translation what remains unpublished of the Coptic literary manuscripts at the Pierpont Morgan Library. A first volume appeared under the title Homiletica from the Pierpont Morgan Library (CSCO 524 and 525). The introduction to the text volume includes sections on the texts, the manuscripts, and the language, as well as some addenda to Homiletica and to the Catalogue of Coptic Manuscripts in the Pierpont Morgan Library (Peeters 1993). In the introduction to the translation volume, S. Harvey discusses the cultural and historical setting of the five texts. The texts are attributed to Anastasius of Euchaita, Epiphanius of Salamis, Isaac of Antinoe, Severian of Gabala, and Theopempus of Antioch, but these attributions are probably spurious. The works may have been composed as late as the seventh or eight century AD in Coptic, with the thematic features being derived from earlier sources, possibly including Greek church fathers, and in certain instances perhaps even the authors to which they are attributed; but this matter awaits further investigation.

Book SynopsisThis investigation is concerned with ancient Egyptian calendars. Its specific focus is one of the oldest problems of the study of these calendars: the so-called problem of the month names. This work's main purpose is to suggest an explanation for the Brugsch phenomenon. The Brugsch phenomenon is one of the two main aspects of the problem of the month names. The other is the Gardiner phenomenon. No new theory is presented for the Gardiner phenomenon. As a problem, the Brugsch phenomenon is slightly older than the Gardiner Phenomenon. It has occupied center stage in the study of ancient Egyptian calendars since the early days of this endeavor. In 1870, Heinrich Brugsch, the great pioneer in this subject, wrote about the phenomenon, "Here we encounter all at once the most curious contradiction." Just recently, Rolf Krauss has described the contradiction as still "unsolved". The Brugsch phenomenon concerns the indisputable fact that the last or twelfth month of the Egyptian civil year can be named as if it were the first. Two month names are involved. The first is wp rnpt. Its meaning "opener of the year," refers to a beginning. The second month name is mswt r' "birth of Re" in hieroglyphic Egyptian, Mesore in Aramaic, Greek and Coptic. Both can otherwise also refer to New Year's Day, the quintessential calendrical beginning.
