Crecy Publishing Ferguson TE-20 Tractor
Book SynopsisIn 1917 Harry Ferguson developed a method of attaching a wheel-less plough to a tractor to reduce the dangers of the machine overturning. By 1925 the plough was in production in the USA and Ferguson set about developing equipment that would effectively integrate the implement and the tractor.Ferguson teamed up with David Brown to produce the Ferguson-Brown Type A but sales did not meet Harry''s expectations. Following a demonstration of the Ferguson-Brown tractor to Henry Ford, agreement was reached with the Ford Motor Company in the USA to build an improved version of the tractor there. It was launched in 1939 as the Ford-Ferguson 9N. When Ford terminated this arrangement Ferguson entered an agreement with the Standard Motor Company to bring production of what was now described as the Ferguson TE-20, to Britain. The first were built in 1946 and over the next ten years more than 793,000 examples were produced in Britain, France and the USA. With its revolutionary three-point hydraulic linkage, Ferguson had always seen his tractor as part of a complete farming system and by the time the TE-20 was superseded by the FE-35 in 1956, there were more than 100 Ferguson implements designed specifically to couple to the tractor. This is an enlarged and expanded edition, with many new pictures, of the comprehensive history of the TE-20 and the Ferguson System which helped to mechanise and revolutionise farming across the world. Today, with classic tractors a thriving hobby, few machines are more sought after than the TE-20. The book is also a reliable reference guide to finding, restoring and operating the ''little grey Fergie'' some 75 years since the first example was produced.

Chelsea Green Publishing Co The Small-Scale Poultry Flock, Revised Edition:
Book SynopsisThe first edition of The Small-Scale Poultry Flock helped thousands of small-scale farmers and smallholders adopt a practical model for working with chickens and other domestic fowl based on natural systems. In this expanded and thoroughly revised edition, readers will find plenty of all-new material. Author Harvey Ussery introduces readers to his new favorite breed of chicken, Icelandics; describes how he manages his breeding flock using a clan mating system; presents detailed information on the use of trapnests and record-keeping spreadsheets for evaluating breeding hen performance; and provides step-by-step instructions for construction of an ingeniously designed mobile poultry shelter. Readers will also find fully updated information and tips on all aspects of flock management, including: growing (and sourcing) feed on a small scale cultivating earthworms and grubs as high-protein poultry feed brooding (and breeding) at home implementing manure management using electric net fencing for ranging flocks using poultry as insect and weed managers in the garden and orchard enlisting your chickens as garden tillers and compost-makers protecting the flock from predators keeping the flock healthy working with mother hens In The Small-Scale Poultry Flock, Revised Edition Ussery presents a sustainable and ecologically friendly model that can be adapted to a variety of scales. His advice and examples throughout the book will prove invaluable for beginner farmers, growers looking to incorporate poultry into their programme and experienced farmers looking to create a truly sustainable system.Trade Review“Ussery provides an encyclopedia of chicken and other fowl care, encompassing everything from anatomy and species selection to feeding, breeding, and selling in the local market. . . . Altogether, there’s no better introductory reference on the joy of home-raising chickens.” —Booklist“Written by a self-described ‘old hick with chickenshit on his boots,’ The Small-Scale Poultry Flock is a welcoming and decisive guide to the poultry-keeping experience. Harvey Ussery’s natural approach is that of a partnership with his flock, in what he terms ‘an integrated food independence enterprise.’ The author shares straightforward, encouraging information written from the viewpoint of someone who desires to share the knowledge that has come out of three decades of hard-won experience. Anyone considering a natural approach to producing eggs and meat will cherish this must-have reference, enjoyable to sit down and read cover-to-cover, but also perfect for answers on the go.” —Foreword Review“As usual, Harvey never ceases to amaze with his in-depth knowledge of poultry keeping. I love that, as knowledgeable as he is, he still constantly searches for new ‘tweaks’ to improve his farm efforts and the quality of life for his birds. He writes from that direct experience and it certainly shows in this wonderful go-to book for any aspiring poultry keeper. So many people claim to be chicken husbandry experts, but Harvey, he’s the real deal.” —Jeannette Beranger, senior program manager, The Livestock Conservancy“Harvey Ussery has spent a lifetime developing and showcasing a truly viable poultry model that is ultimately carbon-sequestering, hygienic, neighbor-friendly, and food-secure. . . . This book is about a call to heritage, to the wisest of wise traditions in food security and relationships. Harvey brings the latest tools and practices within the grasp of any aspiring flockster. It is this functional spirit that makes this book a classic in the small-scale poultry rearing genre.” —Joel Salatin, Polyface, Inc.“Amid the new and urgent focus on holistic, inputs-free food production married to ecologically robust land management, this expanded edition of Harvey Ussery’s classic guide to all things chicken should have a place on every small farm or homestead bookshelf. Dedicated to the conviction that what is best for the animal and the land will always be best for the farmer, Ussery points the novice ‘flockster’ toward best practice, while he inspires the long-time poultry keeper with a deeper commitment to ecological cooperation.” —Shawn and Beth Dougherty, authors of The Independent Farmstead“Here’s the ultimate book for those who want to know everything there is to know about raising poultry. And every detail is backed up by the author’s own (often entertaining) experiences. I could not find—in this encyclopedic array of chicken knowhow—one detail that I could quibble with.” —Gene Logsdon, author of Letter to a Young Farmer and Holy Shit“The Small-Scale Poultry Flock is the perfect book for all chicken keepers, from the folks just starting out to the most experienced. It covers everything from the history of the species and coop designs to feeding, breeding, keeping predators at bay, processing meat, and much more. Harvey’s writing style is easy going and feels like an old friend giving you sound advice. This is a comprehensive resource to keep on your bookshelf for many years to come.” —Jessi Bloom, author of Free-Range Chicken Gardens; coauthor of Practical Permaculture“It is refreshing and inspiring to read a book on chickens that has original content and creative techniques. This can only come from personal insights and hands-on experience. Harvey Ussery eloquently describes how to keep and employ a family flock of chickens. “Chickens have migrated with humans for over 3,000 years all over the planet. It’s time to bring them back home. Let them work in our communities and production gardens where they can feed not only themselves and humans, but also the soul and soil of Nature, enabling an abundant ecology. Food security with a consistent supply chain can be as close as your own backyard. Just read and use the practices described in The Small-Scale Poultry Flock. You will not be disappointed. High fives to Harvey!” —Pat Foreman, author of City Chicks; founder, The Gossamer Foundation“This book is packed with practical advice on raising poultry by someone who has not only done it all but has learned from his broad experience and knows how to communicate that wisdom clearly and in a lively, readable style. Harvey Ussery has written one of the most comprehensive guides out there, but what places it above the rest of the crowd is that he shows you how to work with nature rather than against it in ways that will minimize work while ensuring the health and happiness of the flock. Whether you're a beginner or an old-time poultry farmer, you shouldn’t go any further without this excellent manual.” —Toby Hemenway, author of Gaia’s Garden and The Permaculture City“The Small-Scale Poultry Flock is about establishing a free-range poultry flock fully integrated into a healthy homestead ecosystem. Based upon the author’s decades of hands-on experience with many breeds and species, it covers all the basics about raising poultry, and fills some important gaps not usually covered well enough elsewhere, including chicken behavior, poultry breeding, raising chicks with broody hens, managing free-ranging, dealing with predators, using electric net fencing, feeding poultry with home-grown feeds, and integrating the poultry with soil mineral balance, gardens, lawns and pastures, orchards, worm bins, and soldier fly (larvae) production. If you want to raise chickens and can afford just one book, I recommend this one.” —Carol Deppe, author of The Resilient Gardener“Ussery’s outstanding book is certain to withstand the test of time both for its encyclopedic and practical information, and for its acknowledgment that the future of our culture and our food security is in the hands of the small farmer and backyard producer. If you are starting out with your first flock, this is your book. And when you’ve been keeping poultry for 30+ years, this will still be your best book.” —Shannon Hayes, author of The Grassfed Gourmet Cookbook and Radical Homemakers“Anyone interested in practical, experienced, insightful information about how to select, breed, care for, manage, feed, protect, process, eat or market small-scale poultry flocks for their own eating pleasure or selling to others—and have FUN—should read this book.” —Frederick Kirschenmann, distinguished fellow, Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture; author of Cultivating an Ecological Conscience“There is a revolution going on, and it is the popular return of keeping poultry to provide food for our home tables. Ussery’s The Small-Scale Poultry Flock helps lead the way by integrating the small flock with its natural environment, the homestead, or small farm. Nowhere else will you find such valuable information on putting poultry to work in the garden, producing much of their feed, and producing healthful food for ourselves.” —Don Schrider, author of the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy’s Chicken Assessment for Improving Productivity and Storey’s Guide to Raising Turkeys "The Small-Scale Poultry Flock is an indispensable guide for homesteaders or market growers interested in doing it right. . . .[And] the revised edition packs in even more information than the original.” —Hobby Farms

Book Synopsis''Charming, important . . . a journey of discovery'' TelegraphOver the course of a year, Robert Penn learns how to plant, harvest, thresh and mill his own wheat, in order to bake bread for his family. In returning to this pre-industrial practice, he tells the fascinating story of our relationship with bread: from the domestication of wheat in the Fertile Crescent at the dawn of civilization, to the rise of mass-produced loaves and the resurgence in homebaking today.Gathering knowledge and wisdom from experts around the world - farmers on the banks of the Nile, harvesters in the American Midwest and Parisian boulangers - Penn reconnects the joy of making and eating bread with a deep appreciation for the skill and patience required to cultivate its key ingredient. The University of Chicago Press Of Farming and Classics A Memoir
Book SynopsisDavid Grene devoted his life to two things: farming, which he began as a boy in Ireland and continued into old age; and classics, which he taught for several decades that culminated in his translating and editing the Complete Greek Tragedies. This memoir which he wrote before his death weaves together these interests to tell a quirky story.Trade Review"An illuminating read for every classical scholar engaged with the current quest for the subject's roots, and the excavation of the way that it has evolved over the past century and a half." - Edith Hall, Times Literary Supplement "David Grene reminds us of two crucial aspects of modern life exemplified by this rare individual. First is the symbiosis between the life of contemplation and action - and just how it is that hard physical and dirty work offers real value in rediscovering nature, bringing with it a certain pragmatism that permeates reading and thinking.... Second, Grene reminds us of what constitutes success in life." - Victor Davis Hanson, New York Sun "Grene was as much part of the rural farming community in Ireland as of the academic community in Chicago, and Irish people found it as hard to imagine him as a professor of Greek as his academic colleagues found it hard to imagine him as a dairy farmer." - Irish Times "David Grene could easily be described with the cliche 'last of a breed,' but he was also the first of his kind. Or at least, the first in a long time.... His personal style reincarnated that of the Roman artistocrats, with their love of the soil and taste for good books." - Ron Grossman, Chicago Tribune"

Raw, earthy and inspiring'' - Cal Flyn, author of Islands of Abandonment''A beautifully written, incredibly timely book'' - Clover Stroud, author of My Wild and Sleepless NightsWhen barrister and author Sarah Langford left her city life behind she found herself unexpectedly back in the world of farming. It was not how she remembered. Instead, she saw farmers dealing with very different problems to those faced by her grandfather, considered a hero for having fed a starving nation after war. Now farmers faced accusations of ecological mismanagement by a hostile urban media whilst battling extreme weather and political upheaval. Yet as Sarah learned how to farm and grew closer to the land, she discovered a new generation on a path of regenerative change. In Rooted, Sarah weaves her own story around those who tTrade ReviewEnthralling ... An unignorable call to understand the challenges facing not only farming but the Earth itself. * Spectator *Absorbing, compassionate [and] galvanising. * Guardian *Langford writes so movingly of the countryside and its effect on her heart and her family. * TLS *More than a memoir; Langford manages to contain and convey the whole scale of the coming agricultural revolution. * Daily Telegraph *A refreshing perspective on a overwhelmingly masculine world * Financial Times *Sarah Langford's book on farming is really a book about healing. All of life and death is here: family, politics, nature, climate, history, humanity. Rooted is a beautifully written, powerful reminder of where we've gone wrong, what is at stake, and how we can change. I loved it. * Christie Watson, bestselling author of The Language of Kindness *Rooted offers us an honest look at the farming life today. It is not an easy way to make a living, but through Langford's personal story - and those of who she meets - we appreciate how it offers a connection with the land, and a firmer sense of our place in the world. Raw, earthy and inspiring. * Cal Flyn, author of Islands of Abandonment *Moving, startling, uplifting, galvanising and unsettling, this plainly beautiful book is one of those rare few that changes how you see the world around you: the shape of fields seen from a train, the vegetables in a supermarket chiller cabinet, the earth beneath your feet and falling through your fingers. * Ella Risbridger, author of Midnight Chicken and The Year of Miracles *A beautifully written, incredibly timely book addressing not just where our food comes from and why this matters so much, but also fundamental questions relating to our relationship with the land, and the definition of home. * Clover Stroud, author of My Wild and Sleepless Nights *Heartbreaking and hopeful, this story of a farming revival has never been more important. University of Illinois Press The World of Soy
Book SynopsisA lively discussion of soy production and consumptionTrade Review“The World of Soy escorts readers on an unexpected but delightfully fascinating journey through the subject of soy as a food. . . . Recommended.”--Choice"Du Bois, Tan, and Mintz have done an excellent job combining a series of chapters from diverse authors into a seamless read. The World of Soy provides an informative account of a legume equally ancient and modern."--Science“Measured in cash terms, soy (Glycine max) is in some ways the most important crop, and in terms of imports and exports, second only to wheat. The fact that this important book has contributions by seventeen authors reflects more than the circumstances of its origins in a couple of academic conferences; it also shows the vastness of the topic and the large number of disciplines required to make sense of it. . . . [This] exemplary, comprehensive volume shows the way to frame the crucial questions of food studies. “--Times Literary Supplement“The chapters in The World of Soy are remarkably informative and contribute greatly to our understanding of this food that maintains multiple identities and meanings across the world.”--Society for the Anthropology of Food and Nutrition“Knowledge provided in the chapters and the large and fantastic reference set are gems shining for us all.”--Flavor and Fortune“All food-studies theorists and practitioners will find plenty to entice them in the historical and ethnographic chapters, which offer sweeping but detailed evidence-based culinary histories and geographies, plus step-by-step recipes for the transformation of soy into so many cultural products.”--Gastronomica"An important book, with implications for food policy, everyday food choices, and the comparative understanding of dietary change. It is a major contribution to food studies and to the anthropology of food."--Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute"A rich introduction to the varied uses--past, present, and future--of this underappreciated yet ubiquitous foodstuff. Drawing on an astounding variety of backgrounds and disciplines, this volume amply shows why the soybean is the staple ingredient in both traditional and modern cuisines, as well as the most important agricultural commodity in the global food system."--Warren Belasco, author of Meals to Come: A History of the Future of Food "This enjoyable work provides readers with an overview of the history of modern as well as traditional soy food products. It also points out roadblocks to improving nutritional standards of populations abroad through the introduction of soybean foods. The World of Soy will be extremely informative to groups such as food companies, chefs, and international agencies seeking to expand the uses of soybeans."--Theodore Hymowitz, emeritus professor of plant genetics, University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and author of Pedigrees of soybean cultivars released in the United States and Canada "What a marvelous, multifaceted work! As varied as the foodstuffs that derive from the bean itself--pungent fermented miso paste; nutty kinako toasted soy flour; delicate, shirred sheets of yuba soymilk; silken cubes of tofu custard; stinky and sticky natto beans--the essays and studies in The World of Soy provide readers with savory, rich, piquant, tangy, and spicy approaches to understanding and appreciating the global importance of soy."--Elizabeth Andoh, author of Washoku: Recipes from the Japanese Home Kitchen "This book is a major contribution to the literature on world crops. An up-to-date review of this vitally important food has long been needed, and The World of Soy fills the need with outstanding success. Particularly detailed and notably valuable are the accounts of currently produced soyfoods and how they are changing with new technology worldwide."--E. N. Anderson, author of Everyone Eats: Understanding Food and Culture "The story of soy encompasses every aspect of food and globalization, and The World of Soy takes us on an illuminating journey from the simple pleasures of home-cooking to the stark realities of mass industrial farming and food processing. This skillfully assembled collection should be at the core of every food studies curriculum."--Richard Wilk, professor and director of the food studies program at Indiana University, author of Home Cooking in the Global VillageTable of ContentsAcknowledgments vii Introduction: The Significance of Soy 1Sidney W. Yale University Press Love for the Land
Book SynopsisA moving exploration of presence and place told through the stories of small-scale farmers who, despite intense adversity, continue caring for their landTrade ReviewFinalist for the Reed Environmental Writing Award, sponsored by the Southern Environmental Law Center“Brooks Lamb has taken seriously my father Wendell Berry’s assertion that we don’t have an agricultural crisis in America but a cultural crisis. He dares to take the virtues of affection and fidelity to particular places as economic necessities. Working landscapes and the farming people who belong to them have been ignored for generations; we have nearly lost the cultural knowledge that they hold. He tells their stories with due respect and calls upon us to learn from them.”—Mary Berry, executive director, The Berry Center“Love for the Land is excellent. It reinforces that the work we do daily has a spiritual presence. In this book, Brooks Lamb makes real the humanity of the land and our relationship to the land.”—Ebonie Alexander, executive director, Black Family Land Trust“Love for the Land puts readers directly in touch with farmers, highlighting their hopes and concerns as they navigate a complex agricultural and land management landscape. Given the absence of farmer voices in today’s increasingly urban world, this book is more necessary than ever.”—Norman Wirzba, author of This Sacred Life: Humanity’s Place in a Wounded World“In Love for the Land, Lamb powerfully explores the virtues of stewardship, tracing their import in and through quotidian rhythms of care, crises of consolidation, and the vital demands of environmental justice and racial equity. This is a graceful, thoughtful book.”—Grace Olmstead, author of Uprooted: Recovering the Legacy of the Places We’ve Left Behind“Brooks Lamb uses the inspiring words of farmers who remain on their land to show how they exemplify the stewardship virtues of imagination, affection, and fidelity.”—Brian Donahue, author of Reclaiming the Commons: Community Farms and Forests in a New England Town

Taylor & Francis Ltd Economics of Carbon Sequestration in Forestry
Book SynopsisSince the 1992 Earth Summit, there have been increased efforts on an international scale to address global climate change. Reducing the increased levels of CO2 and other greenhouse gases, which are believed to be contributing to this climatic change, will require major effort on the part of the world''s governments. This means that the environmental, economic, social, and political consequences of climate change must be understood, and that strategies to mitigate climate change must also address these issues. The workshop detailed in this book concentrated on how economic principles and analysis could contribute to the planning of forestry projects aimed at affecting terrestrial carbon balances. More than 30 international scientists came together for one week near Stockholm, Sweden and divided into working groups charged with addressing a specific issue and preparing a paper within this time frame. This book contains the majority of papers presented at this meeting, and includes botTable of ContentsWorkshop Overview: Managing Terrestrial Carbon Balances Via Forestry: Economic Considerations. Book SynopsisBalancing the Commons in Switzerland outlines continuity and change in the management of common-pool resources such as pastures and forests in Switzerland. The book focuses on the differences and similarities between local institutions (rules and regulations) and forms of commoners' organisations (corporations of citizens and corporations) which have managed common property for several centuries and have shaped the cultural landscapes of Switzerland. At the core of the book are five case studies from the German, French and Italian speaking regions of Switzerland. Beginning in the Late Middle Ages and focusing on the transformative periods in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, it traces the internal and external political, economic and societal changes and examines what impact these changes had on commoners.
