Taylor & Francis Inc Physiology of Stressed Crops, Vol. 5: Membrane
Book SynopsisThough plant cells are separated by cell walls, cells maintain their identity as they are delimited by semi-permeable membranes that permit them to function as autonomous units. The flow of materials in and out of the cell is regulated by channels, transporters, pumps, and acquaporins in these membranes. The cytoplasm is sandwiched between two membranes: the plasma membrane, which forms the outer boundary of the cytoplasm, and the tonoplast or the vacuolar membrane which forms the inner boundary. Cell membranes serve several different functions: form boundaries and provide compartmentalization, site of chemical reactions catalyzed by membrane proteins, regulate the exchange of ions/compounds across the barrier, site of perception/transmission of signals (hormones), and act in cell-to-cell communication. The membrane functions are affected by different abiotic (biotic stress not discussed), nutritional, edaphic and mechanical stresses, which have been discussed in this volume in light of the recent literatureTable of ContentsMembranes; Cold and Freezing; Heat Stress; Drought Stress; Salinity Stress; Hypoxic Stress; Oxidative Stress; UV-B Radiation Stress; Nutrient Deficiency Stress; Heavy Metal Toxicity Stress; Soil Acidity Stress; Mechanical Stress and Wounding; Low Humidity Stress

Taylor & Francis Inc Reproductive Biology and Phylogeny of Fishes
Book SynopsisIt is perhaps because fishes live in a buoyant medium, whether it be fresh or sea water, that they show a diversity in body shapes that is unparalleled by other vertebrates. There is also a unique diversity in the modes of reproduction, whether by external or internal fertilization, and this, with the morphology and fine structure of the reproductive system and its components, is the subject of the present volume. A large part of this book deals with the ultrastructure of spermatozoa, with some discussion of phylogenetic implications.Trade ReviewThis book is one of a number of volumes in a series entitled Reproductive Biology and Phylogeny that addresses a wide variety of taxonomic groups. One major feature of the book, as with others in the series, is the attention to phylogeny and classification as a framework for understanding reproductive biology … . Collectively, the contributions are authored by several internationally recognized researchers. … An enormous amount of information is compiled in this text. Without a doubt it will be an invaluable reference for a wide variety of biologists … .— David C. Monthly Review Press,U.S. Big Farms Make Big Flu: Dispatches on Influenza,
Book SynopsisThanks to breakthroughs in production and food science, agribusiness has been able to devise new ways to grow more food and get it more places more quickly. There is no shortage of news items on hundreds of thousands of hybrid poultry - each animal genetically identical to the next - packed together in megabarns, grown out in a matter of months, then slaughtered, processed and shipped to the other side of the globe. Less well known are the deadly pathogens mutating in, and emerging out of, these specialized agro-environments. In fact, many of the most dangerous new diseases in humans can be traced back to such food systems, among them Campylobacter, Nipah virus, Q fever, hepatitis E, and a variety of novel influenza variants.Agribusiness has known for decades that packing thousands of birds or livestock together results in a monoculture that selects for such disease. But market economics doesn't punish the companies for growing Big Flu - it punishes animals, the environment, consumers, and contract farmers. Alongside growing profits, diseases are permitted to emerge, evolve, and spread with little check. "That is," writes evolutionary biologist Rob Wallace, "it pays to produce a pathogen that could kill a billion people."In Big Farms Make Big Flu, a collection of dispatches by turns harrowing and thought-provoking, Wallace tracks the ways influenza and other pathogens emerge from an agriculture controlled by multinational corporations. Wallace details, with a precise and radical wit, the latest in the science of agricultural epidemiology, while at the same time juxtaposing ghastly phenomena such as attempts at producing featherless chickens, microbial time travel, and neoliberal Ebola. Wallace also offers sensible alternatives to lethal agribusiness. Some, such as farming cooperatives, integrated pathogen management, and mixed crop-livestock systems, are already in practice off the agribusiness grid. While many books cover facets of food or outbreaks, Wallace's collection appears the first to explore infectious disease, agriculture, economics and the nature of science together. Big Farms Make Big Flu integrates the political economies of disease and science to derive a new understanding of the evolution of infections. Highly capitalized agriculture may be farming pathogens as much as chickens or corn.

Taylor & Francis Inc Meta-analysis and Combining Information in
Book SynopsisNovel Techniques for Analyzing and Combining Data from Modern Biological StudiesBroadens the Traditional Definition of Meta-AnalysisWith the diversity of data and meta-data now available, there is increased interest in analyzing multiple studies beyond statistical approaches of formal meta-analysis. Covering an extensive range of quantitative information combination methods, Meta-analysis and Combining Information in Genetics and Genomics looks at how to analyze multiple studies from a broad perspective. After presenting the basic ideas and tools of meta-analysis, the book addresses the combination of similar data types: genotype data from genome-wide linkage scans and data derived from microarray gene expression experiments. The expert contributors show how some data combination problems can arise even within the same basic framework and offer solutions to these problems. They also discuss the combined analysis of different data types, giving readers an opportunity to see data combination approaches in action across a wide variety of genome-scale investigations. As heterogeneous data sets become more common, biological understanding will be significantly aided by jointly analyzing such data using fundamentally sound statistical methodology. This book provides many novel techniques for analyzing data from modern biological studies that involve multiple data sets, either of the same type or multiple data sources.Trade ReviewFor someone who is interested in either metaanalysis or genomics, this book provides a great overview of both. … Guerra and Goldstein have done a wonderful job in introducing the material and in organizing the collection coherently. … the material is very accessible to readers of Biometrics … this book is well worth having as a reference book for those interested in metaanalysis and/or genomics. … Guerra and Goldstein have done an admirable job putting the collection together.—Peter H. Apple Academic Press Inc. Ethnobotany of India, Volume 2: Western Ghats and
Book SynopsisThis is the second of a five-volume set. This series of volumes on the ethnobotany of different regions of India melds important knowledge in one place. India is one of the most important regions of the old world and has culturally rich and diverse knowledge systems. The expert authors have been selected to summarize information on the various aspects of ethnobotany of India, such as ethnoecology, traditional agriculture, cognitive ethnobotany, material sources, traditional pharmacognosy, ethnoconservation strategies, bioprospection of ethnodirected knowledge, and protection of ethnobotanical knowledge.Trade Review"This volume will serve as a pragmatic and authoritative reference for conservationists and pharmacologists working in India. . . . Readers will also find it credible as a de facto gap and trend analysis for ethnobotanical studies in the Western Ghats. . . . Over the past two decades, there has been an exponential increase in ethnobotanical studies throughout South Asia. Often published in local journals or by independent presses, however, their findings rarely receive the attention needed to drive both innovation and policy. The five-volume Ethnobotany of India series addresses this by extensively reviewing plant resources from the subcontinent. Volume 2 focuses on ethnobotanical knowledge from the Western Ghats and West Coast of Peninsular India, providing not only historical context but also ethnographic insight into the region. The Western Ghats are one of Earth’s most breathtaking biocultural hotspots. Extending south from the humid metropolis of Mumbai through the western tip of Peninsular India, their rolling hills house diverse communities that have (re)shaped each other through time. Volume 2 presents these dynamics in 13 curated chapters structured around standard ethnobotanical tables. Taylor & Francis Ltd Agriculture, Biodiversity and Markets:
Book SynopsisDebate about how best to ensure the preservation of agricultural biodiversity is caught in a counter-productive polemic between proponents and critics of market-based instruments and agricultural modernisation. This book argues that neither position does justice to the range of strategies that farmers use to manage agrobiodiversity and other livelihood assets as they adapt to changing social, economic, and environmental circumstances. Chapters explore relationships between the exploitation and conservation of agricultural biodiversity and the livelihoods of agricultural communities, and evaluate the capacity of national and multilateral institutions and policy settings to support the protection and capture by communities of agrobiodiversity values. The place of ecosystem services in valuing biodiversity in the marketplace is emphasized. A number of authors assess the potential for market-based instruments and initiatives to encourage the protection of biodiversity, while others compare agrobiodiversity/community relationships, and the effectiveness of instruments designed to enhance these, across international boundaries. The book takes a comparative approach, drawing on empirical case studies from across the developed and developing worlds. In doing so, the book does not simply point to similarities and differences in the experience of rural communities. It also shows how global trade and multilateral institutions bring these otherwise disparate communities together in networks that exploit and/or preserve agrobiodiversity and other resources. Trade Review'This volume does an excellent job in bringing together a rich diversity of empirical material from around the world to analyze the complex interdependencies between biodiversity protection and agricultural livelihoods. It provides new and better insights into whether, why and how biodiversity values should be given pride of place in agroecosystems. Highly recommended.' Arthur P.J. Mol, Chair and Professor in Environmental Policy, Wageningen University, The Netherlands 'Biodiversity plays a pivotal role in determining agricultural production and shaping the livelihoods of agricultural communities. This volume skilfully examines relationships between agricultural biodiversity, livelihoods and markets. It is essential reading for anyone wishing to know more about these vitally important relationships.' Professor Mark McGillivray, Chief Ec0onomist, Australian Agency for International Development Agricultural biodiversity - or agrobiodiversity - plays a pivotal role in the livelihoods of all farmers, since it 'encompasses the variety of plants and animals and micro-organisms at sepcies and ecosystem level which are necessary to sustain key functions in the agroecosystem.' C Hurst & Co Publishers Ltd A State Built on Sand: How Opium Undermined
Book SynopsisOscillations in opium poppy production in Afghanistan have long been associated with how the state was perceived, such as after the Taliban imposed a cultivation ban in 2000-1.The international community's subsequent attempts to regulate opium poppy became intimately linked with its own state-building project, and rising levels of cultivation were cited as evidence of failure by those international donors who spearheaded development in poppy-growing provinces like Helmand, Nangarhar and Kandahar.Mansfield's book examines why drug control - particularly opium bans - have been imposed in Afghanistan; he documents the actors involved; and he scrutinises how prohibition served divergent and competing interests. Drawing on almost two decades of fieldwork in rural areas, he explains how these bans affected farming communities, and how prohibition endured in some areas while in others opium production bans undermined livelihoods and destabilised the political order, fuelling violence and rural rebellion.Above all this book challenges how we have come to understand political power in rural Afghanistan. Far from being the passive recipients of violence by state and non-state actors, Mansfield highlights the role that rural communities have played in shaping the political terrain, including establishing the conditions under which they could persist with opium production.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Agroecological Innovations: Increasing Food
Book SynopsisThe world's food supply needs to rise significantly, yet both arable and water supplies per capita are decreasing. Not only are modern agricultural methods beyond the reach of those suffering the greatest food insecurity but they are also ecologically damaging, relying upon fossil energy and chemical inputs. This volume offers a collection of innovative and diverse approaches to agricultural development. Documented in 12 case studies, these approaches are reliant upon greater knowledge, skill and labour input, rather than larger capital expenditure. They are shown to increase yield substantially, sometimes doubling or tripling output. This volume presents the concepts and operational means for reorienting agricultural efforts towards these more environmentally friendly and socially desirable approaches in the developed as well as developing world.Table of ContentsIntroduction * Part 1 Issues For Analysis and Evaluation * Part 2 Experiences from Africa, Latin America and Asia: Africa * Latin America * Asia * Part 3 Advancing Agroecological Agriculture with Participatory Practices * References * Index

Taylor & Francis Inc The Equitable Forest: Diversity, Community, and
Book SynopsisWhile there continues to be refinement in defining and assessing sustainable management, there remains the urgent need for policies that create the conditions that support sustainability and can halt or slow destructive practices already underway. Carol Colfer and her contributors maintain that standardized solutions to forest problems from afar have failed to address both human and environmental needs. Such approaches, they argue, often neglect the knowledge that local stakeholders have accumulated over generations as forest managers and do not address issues involving the diversity and well-being of groups within communities. The contributors note that these problems persist despite clear evidence that equity and social relationships, including gender roles, are important factors in the ways that communities adapt to change and manage forest resources overall. The Equitable Forest offers an alternative to traditional, externally organized strategies for forest management. Termed adaptive collaborative management (ACM), the approach tries to better acknowledge the diversity, complexity, and unpredictability of human and natural systems. ACM works to strengthen local institutions and use the knowledge and capacity of groups in local communities to enhance the health and well-being of both forests and the people who live in and around them. The Equitable Forest provides a detailed explanation of the descriptive, analytical, and methodological tools of ACM, along with accounts of early stages of its implementation in tropical regions of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. Although the contributors make it clear that it is too soon to evaluate the efficacy of ACM, their work is supported by evidence that rural communities do make important contributions when involved in formal forest management; that management strategies are most effective when flexible and tailored to local contexts; and that efforts by outside governmental and nongovernmental organizations to support local management are feasible from the policymaking perspective, and desirable for their impact on human, economic, and environmental well-being.Trade Review'Offers an in-depth presentation of adaptive collaborative management and details its analytical and methodological tools, with convincing examples from many countries. . . .A valuable source of information about the ways in which participatory research and action can best contribute to the conservation of forests.'
