Book SynopsisBeautifully designed and sturdily bound for rugged field use, Mammals of Alabama is the first and only exhaustive guidebook to Alabama's diverse and fascinating mammalian fauna. European and American naturalists visited the territory that would become Alabama as early as the late eighteenth century and marvelled at the breadth and variety of its flora and fauna. Yet until today scientists, scholars, and nature enthusiasts had no systematic guide to the state's mammals. Mammals of Alabama fills the gap. Naturally occurring in the state are nine orders, twenty-two families, fifty-one genera, and seventy-two species of living mammals. Best and Dusi offer an engaging entry for each as well as additional species that have become extinct through natural processes or human extirpation. WW Norton & Co Different Gender Through the Eyes of a
Book SynopsisTrade Review"Adds an important evolutionary dimension to one of the most complex issues of our time.... The beauty of a book by Frans de Waal is that once you read it, you’ll never look at your own species the same way again." -- Tamra Mendelson - Washington Post"A game-changer.... De Waal’s prose is concise and straightforward. His sensitivity to the prevailing zeitgeist that surrounds sex and gender is evident.... There’s no end, in fact, to the fascinating details that emerge from this book, all carefully tied to supporting explanations, historical context, the prevalence of misinformation, the tendency to censor, the power of mindless biological determinism, and whatever else might be necessary for de Waal to make his point. Humor, and the curious anecdote, are never far behind.... Different is a towering achievement." -- Paul R. Abramson - Los Angeles Review of Books"Different has many surprises in store for you, surprises that will leave you humble about complex primate evolution has been, surprises that will leave you humble about complex primate evolution has been, and how much we have yet to learn about how it shapes our lives." -- Carl Zimmer - New York Times Book Review"A smart interactionist framework, in which biological and socioenvironmental influences on human behavior are entwined." -- Barbara J. King - Science"Dive into Frans de Waal’s magnum opus.... brilliant." -- Carol Tavris - Times Literary Supplement"Entrancing.... de Waal brings to life the complexity of sex and social behaviour in other apes.... Whether or not you agree with him, Different is worth reading for its anecdotes alone." -- Laura Spinney - The Guardian"A brilliant and fascinating book that brings a scientific, compassionate and balanced approach to some of the hottest controversies about sex and gender." -- Yuval Noah Harari, New York Times best-selling author of Sapiens"This book is superb! Frans de Waal is not only one of the world’s most respected primatologists—he’s also a ballsy feminist who, in these riveting pages, ventures into territory where most writers in academia and letters fear to tread.… These pages are packed with great stories, fascinating data, and thought-provoking ideas. They are sure to spark the important conversations we all—male and female, queer and straight, trans and nonbinary—need to have to create a more just and equitable human society." -- Sy Montgomery, author of The Soul of an Octopus"Moving with fluidity and grace between animal and human models, Frans de Waal demonstrates how many common social prejudices that we deem ‘natural’ are in fact anything but. His crisp writing, his skillful deployment of anecdote, and his deep knowledge of animal science inform this nuanced and profound consideration not only of difference but also of sameness." -- Andrew Solomon, author of Far from the Tree and The Noonday Demon"It is a brave man these days who ventures into the minefield of gender differences. But Frans de Waal relies on a gift for storytelling, a sincere respect for culture, along with intimate knowledge of longtime bonobo and chimpanzee associates to deftly negotiate this treacherous terrain. Wise and humane." -- Sarah Blaffer Hrdy, author of The Woman that Never Evolved, Mother Nature, and Mothers and Others"The current debate on the subject of gender differences is in need of a calm biological assessment which Frans de Waal’s thoughtful book Different gives us." -- Desmond Morris, author of The Naked Ape: A Zoologist’s Study of the Human Animal"Every new book by Frans de Waal is a cause for excitement, and this one is no different. A breath of fresh air in the cramped debate about the differences between men and women. Fascinating, nuanced and very timely." -- Rutger Bregman, author of Humankind: A Hopeful History"Women versus men. Sex versus gender. Biology versus social inculcation. Few domains more effectively tempt fools to rush in than the topic of sex differences. In this case, however, rather than being a fool, Frans de Waal is our wisest primatologist, turning his attention to this irresistible topic. With great clarity, insight, and wit, he examines human sex differences, never once letting us forget that, at the end of the day, we are just another kind of primate. This is a superb, intensely stimulating read." -- Robert M. Sapolsky, author of Behave"[de Waal] argue[s] with wit and clarity against assumptions about sex and gender that generate inequality.... Engaging, enlightening, and deeply informative." -- Kirkus, starred review"Fascinating.... De Waal shines in his empathetic, Tolstoyan portrait of animal life.... This surprising look at the nature of primates has a lot to say about what it means to be human." -- Publishers Weekly

Johns Hopkins University Press Mountain Lions of the Black Hills
Book SynopsisThe story of the recovery of mountain lions in the Black Hills of South Dakota. Mountain lions, sometimes called pumas or cougars, were once spread throughout the United States, occupying all 48 of the contiguous states. By the 1960s, though, they were almost extinct in central and eastern North America. In Mountain Lions of the Black Hills, Dr. Jonathan A. Jenks, who, along with his team of graduate students, has tracked over 200 of these fascinating predators, tells the complex story of the big cats' lives in the northern Great Plains. Jenks reports on mountain lion population dynamics, diet, nutrition, diseases, behavior, and genetics. He explores the impact of a changing prey base on population growth and decline, movements within and away from the region, and hunting on the species; discusses interactions between the cats and livestock; and examines local people's evolving perceptions of mountain lions. Throughout, Jenks explores how we can balance conservation techniques withTrade ReviewThe book is enriched by more than 25 years of research . . . Fulcrum Inc.,US The Guide to Colorado Mammals
Book SynopsisA guidebook for a general audience describing approximately 126 species of mammals native to Colorado. Each mammal is described within a Species Account, including common and scientific name, physical description, size, habitat, distribution, field notes, legal status, and photographs. Includes sidebars highlighting interesting information about mammal biology, life history, and behavior. The book includes a glossary, index, and checklists.Trade Review"Colorado naturalist Young has published several books on Colorado and regional wildlife. She has written this well-organized field guide to the state's mammals for 'casual naturalists, outdoor recreationists, families, Colorado vacationers, and anyone desiring a general overview.' Quick identification is a major virtue, facilitated by pages color coded by family. Designed for heavy use, the volume offers descriptions of all 129 species known to have inhabited the state, including three (bison, grizzly bear, and gray wolf) no longer found in the wild. All entries include the following sections: 'Field ID,' 'Size,' 'Habitat,' 'Distribution,' 'Field Notes,' and 'Legal Status.' Color photos, limited to one per species, have been chosen less for photographic merit than for illustrating key differentiation factors. Many, however, add genuine photo interest and appeal. Range maps are provided for each species, and numerous sidebars give additional life histories. Appendixes add further value: a list of two bats and a flying squirrel rarely confirmed in the state; suggestions on observation ethics; where to see Colorado mammals; a checklist of species and dental formulas for each; and tips for identifying mammal skulls found in the field. A glossary supports the text. A solid bet for state and regional libraries. Summing Up: Recommended." --CHOICE

Smithsonian Books Raccoons: A Natural History
Book SynopsisThe word raccoon is drawn from the Native American Algonquian language. Their term arakun roughly translates to “he who scratches with his hands.” Anyone who has found a raccoon rummaging around in a once securely closed trash container can attest to how skillful raccoons are with their front paws. In fact, they have four times as many sensory receptors in their forepaw skin as they do in their hindpaws, a ratio similar to that of human hands and feet. Samuel Zeveloff explores this trait and much more in his accessible natural history of raccoons.Written with the general reader in mind, Raccoons presents detailed information on raccoon evolution, physical characteristics, social behavior, habitats, food habits, reproduction, and conservation, as well as their relationship with humans and many other topics. The section on distribution and subspecies focuses on the raccoon’s current range expansion, and the material on their cultural significance demonstrates this mammal’s unique status in different North American cultures.

Smithsonian Books A Chance for Lasting Survival: Ecology and
Book SynopsisFrom 1984 through 1995 a small band of ecologists led by Pan Wenshi from Peking University conducted a study of wild giant pandas in the Qinling Mountains of Shaanxi Province. This project was the first Chinese-led conservation project in China and was conducted during a significant transition period in Chinese history, as the country opened its society and science to the world. The project focused on behavioral observation of wild giant pandas, but evolved to include physiology, nutrition, ecology, land-use policy, and population biology as the staff became more aware that the issues with captive pandas (assisted reproduction, unusual diet, and genetic inbreeding) were not the most critical to survival of wild populations. It is evident in this work that, as the scientists gained knowledge, they came to see giant panda conservation as wrapped in landscape ecology and human/wildlife interactions. The group was seminal in the Chinese government's enactment of a logging ban to their study area by advocating for pandas at the national level. The project was summarized in a 2001 volume, but its publication in Mandarin limited its influence on the greater conservation community. This English version of the original work translates, condenses, and refines the original volume, with added contextual chapters on the importance of this volume and how our understanding of giant panda conservation is shaped by this pioneering field work.Trade ReviewCHOICE Encouraged by the findings from the Wolong panda studies (The Giant Pandas of Wolong, by G. Schaller et al., CH, Oct'85), Wenshi (Peking Univ.) and other Chinese wildlife biologists working under grueling conditions undertook the "first Chinese-led conservation project" in the country to study wild radio-collared pandas inhabiting the high-elevation regenerating forest in Qinling Mountains, Shaanxi Province. They summarized/analyzed over 10 years of data, including research methodology, in a 2001 publication written in Mandarin Chinese. Topics covered included population abundance, distribution and dynamics, dens, home range, movement migration, dispersal routes and activity location, activity budgets, behavioral relationships of mother and young, mating systems, and feeding strategies and nutrition relative to the various bamboo species. A translation and updated version of this highly significant book makes previously inaccessible information on the life history and ecology of this world icon species, as well as its relationship to the biotic landscape and land use policy that impacts the survival of the species, available to a wide audience. It is a valuable resource for readers in conservation biology, wildlife biology, and zoology. --R. L. Smith, West Virginia University Summing Up: Highly recommended. Upper-division undergraduates and above.Quarterly Review of BiologyI highly recommend this volume not only because it contains unique insights into the ecology of giant pandas, but also because it takes readers on a wonderful journey of scientific discovery that ultimately influenced key policy decisions. With the benefit of several decades of hindsight, the title of this book aptly reflects a story of hope.EcologyIf you ever wanted to know what a small, dedicated research team could accomplish against insurmountable odds, then A Chance for Lasting Survival: Ecology and Behavior of Wild Giant Pandas is the book for you... this recent excellent translation and revision opens up the world of the giant panda as experienced by a vanguard research team led by Wenshi Pan during the 1980s and 1990s... a clear, meaningful window into the ecology and conservation of this iconic species.

Smithsonian Books Mammals of Ungava and Labrador: The 1882-1884 Fieldnotes of Lucien M. Turner together with Inuit and Innu Knowledge
Book SynopsisIn 1882 the Smithsonian Institution Arctic scientist, Lucien McShan Turner, traveled to the Ungava District that encompasses Northern Quebec and Labrador. There he spent 20 months as part of a mission to record meteorological data for an International Polar Year research program. While stationed at the Hudson's Bay Company Trading Post of Fort Chimo in Ungava Bay, now the Inuit community of Kuujjuaq, he soon tired of his primary task and expanded his duties to a study of the natural history and ethnography of the Aboriginal peoples of the region. His ethnography of the Inuit and Innu people was published in 1894, but his substantial writings on natural history never made it to print. Presented here for the first time is the natural history material that Lucien M. Turner wrote on mammals of the Ungava and Labrador regions. His writings provide a glimpse of the habits and types of mammals that roamed Ungava 125 years ago in what was an unknown frontier to non-Inuit and non-Innu people.Trade ReviewHonorary Mention, 2016 William Mills Prize for Non-Fiction Polar BooksCHOICECurrently, the northern latitudes encompassing Arctic and subarctic lands are the most rapidly changing environments in the world, and an understanding of the natural history and sociocultural heritage of the region may have profound implications for economic development and environmental conservation, with impacts on indigenous populations and local biodiversity. This compendium is a comprehensive account of the behavioral ecology of the land and sea mammals of Ungava and Labrador in northeastern Canada, combining the detailed observations of Arctic scientist Turner from the late 1800s with narratives on the subsistence and cultural usage of species by the Inuit and Innu. Traditional knowledge remains valuable today for adaptation and resilience in the face of increasing environmental challenges, as well as for preserving a rich cultural and linguistic heritage. Alongside natural history accounts of species are fables, legends, and creation stories about land and sea mammals, woven seamlessly with superb pictures and illustrations. Part field guide and part collected stories of Inuit and Innu traditional knowledge, this historical perspective also includes modem-day perspectives and interpretations stressing the relationship between humans and their environment. A rich resource for a broad audience including non-Arctic natural and social scientists. Summing Up: Highly recommended. All academic, professional, and general libraries. -- R. A. University of Nevada Press Population Ecology of Roosevelt Elk: Conservation
Book SynopsisThe Roosevelt elk populate the parks along California’s north coast and comprise the largest land mammals in the parks, some weighing up to 1,200 pounds. They are a stable terrestrial land mammal population, a fixture in the parks, but still require ongoing stewardship and management. In a study spanning more than twenty years, Weckerly made key observations and conducted various investigations under a multitude of ecological conditions. Few authors have dedicated this much time and effort into a single research area. It is a testament to perseverance that his groundbreaking study of the Roosevelt elk was so successful. He was able to document the independent dynamics of several herds of female elk, experience the extinction of one of their subpopulations, and record scientific conclusions in the context of resiliency and redundancy of the elk population. This book will be of considerable interest to those who investigate the ecology of big game animals, including naturalists, hunters, and individuals with particular interest in Redwood State and National Parks. It is an important book that contributes substantially to the persistence and viability of Roosevelt elk in the parks and the surrounding area.Trade ReviewThe book is well written, interesting, and should be of interest to a wide array of people. Most scientific aspects of the book are spot on. I think this is a book that should be of value to a broad audience, including visitors to the parks, and not just scientists."" - Terry Bowyer, Idaho State University
