CABI Publishing Weaner Pig
Book SynopsisWeaning represents a significant challenge to every young piglet and the success of the process is crucial to the lifetime performance of the animal. The transition from a liquid diet to one that is usually based on dry food ingredients is accompanied by major changes in digestive physiology, immune status and social and physical environments. Successful weaning is, therefore, the key to effective growth, feed efficiency and the subsequent development of the pig. This book has been developed from a British Society of Animal Science occasional meeting, held in September 2000. The Weaner Pig: Nutrition and Management brings together all the scientific disciplines involved in the pre and post-weaning biology of the piglet, concentrating on:Growth/developmentNutritionImmunology/healthEthologyThe physical environmentTable of Contents1: Growth of the young weaned pig, C T Whittemore and D M Green, University of Edinburgh, UK 2: Energy requirements of the young pig, J Le Dividich and B Séve, Unité Mixte de Recherches sure le Veau et le Porc, France 3: Protein and amino acid requirements of weaner pigs, M Cole and M Sprent, SCA Nutrition Limited, UK 4: Starch digestion in piglets, J Wiseman, J Pickard and L Zarkadas, University of Nottingham, UK 5: Non-starch polysaccharides in the diets of young weaned piglets, J R Pluske, J C Kim, D E McDonald, D W Pethick and D J Hampson, Murdoch University, Australia 6: Individual feed intake of group-housed weaned pigs and health status, E M A M Bruininx,C M C van der Peet-Schwering and J W Schrama, Research Institute for Pig Husbandry, The Netherlands 7: The weaner pig - enzymes and biotechnology for the future, G Partridge, Finnfeeds International Ltd, UK 8: Liquid feeding for the young piglet, P H Brooks, C A Moran, J D Beal, V Demeckova and A Campbell, University of Plymouth, UK 9: Digestive physiology and development in pigs, D Kelly and T P King, Rowett Research Institute, UK 10: Enteric immunity and gut health, M Bailey, K Haverson, B G Miller and C R Stokes, University of Bristol, UK, M A Vega-Lopez, CINVESTAV-IPN, Mexico, R W Bland and H -J Rothkötter, Hannover Medical School, Germany 11: Enteric and respiratory diseases in the young weaned piglet, S Done, Veterinary Laboratories Agency, UK 12: Gut health: practical considerations, P Baynes, NuTec Ltd, UK and M Varley, SCA Nutrition Ltd, UK 13: Aerial pollutants from weaner production, C M Wathes, Silsoe Research Institute, UK 14: Behaviour of the young weaner pig, S Held and M Mendel, University of Bristol, UK 15: Practical management and housing of the young weaned piglet, M Evans, Pig Production Training Ltd, UK 16: Weaning systems in relation to disease, P Wallgren and L Melin, National Veterinary Institute, Sweden 17: Weaning in practice, J W G M Swinkels, H A M Spoolder and H M Vermeer, Research Institute for Pig Husbandry, The Netherlands

Johns Hopkins University Press Smilodon
Book SynopsisThe consummate guide to the ultimate sabertooth. Few animals spark the imagination as much as the sabertooth cat Smilodon. With their incredibly long canines, which hung like fangs past their jaws, these ferocious predators were first encountered by humans when our species entered the Americas. We can only imagine what ice age humans felt when they were confronted by a wild cat larger than a Siberian tiger. Because Smilodon skeletons are perennial favorites with museum visitors, researchers have devoted themselves to learning as much as possible about the lives of these massive cats. This volume, edited by celebrated academics, brings together a team of experts to provide a comprehensive and contemporary view of all that is known about Smilodon. The result is a detailed scientific work that will be invaluable to paleontologists, mammalogists, and serious amateur sabertooth devotees. The book covers all major aspects of the animal's natural history, evolution, phylogenetic relationTrade ReviewAny college-level science collection strong in paleontology must have this in-depth and authoritative survey.—Donovan's Literary ServicesThis edited collection brings together the who-is-who of sabertooth palaeontology to provide a thorough and technical overview of the current state of the field . . . this book is a treasure trove collecting review articles and new research on Smilodon.—Natural History Book ServiceDetailed descriptions of specimens are presented in several papers and make the book an essential reference for researchers working on specimen identification for extinct felids . . . Wits University Press Bats of Southern and Central Africa: A
Book SynopsisThis revised edition of Bats of Southern and Central Africa builds on the solid foundation of the first edition and supplements the original account of bat species then known to be found in Southern and Central Africa with an additional eight newly described species, bringing the total to 124.The chapters on evolution, biogeography, ecology and echolocation have been updated, citing dozens of recently published papers. The book covers the latest systematic and taxonomic studies, ensuring that the names and relationships of bats in this new edition reflect current scientific knowledge. The species accounts provide descriptions, measurements and diagnostic characters as well as detailed information about the distribution, habitat, roosting habits, foraging ecology and reproduction of each species. The updated species distribution maps are based on 6 100 recorded localities.A special feature of the 2010 publication was the mode of identification of families, genera and species by way of character matrices rather than the more generally used dichotomous keys. Since then these matrices have been tested in the field and, where necessary, slightly altered for this edition. New photographs fill in gaps and updated sonograms aid with bat identification in acoustic surveys. The bibliography, which now contains more than 700 entries, will be an invaluable aid to students and scientists wishing to consult original research.Trade ReviewIn this extensive revision of their ground-breaking book, the authors display their commanding expertise on southern African bats. The volume serves as an authoritative and engaging summary of generations of research, and offers naturalists everywhere a highly readable account of some of Africa’s most diverse and fascinating mammals. — B. CABI Publishing Feline Behaviour and Welfare
Book SynopsisCats are the world's most popular domestic pet, as well as being wild animals. This comprehensive book on feline behaviour explores both the familiar domesticated animal and wild relatives such as the leopard, tiger and lynx to examine the Felidae family as a whole, allowing for fascinating comparisons between wild and domestic species and explanations of behaviour in pet cats with evolutionary origins. Fraser's work helps increase readers' understanding of cat behaviour - why they behave as they do, for what purpose and why. The focus is on identifying normal behaviour from the cat's perspective, with a welfare theme running throughout; as exhibitions of normal behaviour provide evidence of good welfare, and abnormal behaviour can be an indicator of poor welfare. Providing a veterinary perspective - by including coverage of feline physiology, life stages and reproduction - as well as an ethological one, this is an important read for veterinarians, shelter workers, animal behaviourists and students of veterinary medicine and animal welfare, while also being of interest to pet owners.Table of Contents1: Introduction 2: Well-being and Its Roots 3: Feline Neuroethology 4: Play and the Steps Through Life 5: Basic Activities 6: Association and Reproduction 7: Giant Wild Cats 8: Principal Species of Wild Cats 9: Minor Wild Cat Species 10: Common and Comparative Feline Features 11: Abnormal Behaviour and Training 12: Health Monitoring 13: Points of Welfare 14: Review of Well-being

Oxford University Press The Origin and Evolution of Mammals
Book SynopsisMammals are the dominant large animals of today, occurring in virtually every environment. This book is an account of the remarkable 320 million year long fossil record that documents their origin, their long spell as no more than small, nocturnal creatures, and their explosive radiation since the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago. Tom Kemp also unveils the exciting molecular evidence, which, coupled with important new fossils, is presently challenging current thinking on the interrelationships and historical biogeography of mammals. The Origin and Evolution of Mammals will be of interest to advanced undergraduate and graduate students as well as researchers in vertebrate palaeontology, biogeography, mammalian systematics and molecular taxonomy. Book SynopsisThe marsupial family Dasyuridae has a history of study extending from 18th century naturalists to the modern genomics era. The Evolution of Dasyurid Marsupials: Systematics and Family History tells the story of dasyurid evolution as it unfolded in the context of changing world views on biodiversity, biotic history and scientific methodology, from its roots in Enlightenment taxonomy to its transformation by the Darwinian and Hennigian revolutions, and then its maturation as statistical phylogenetics and phylogenomics.Research on dasyurids includes every major approach in animal systematics, including some for which few comparable examples exist. It extends beyond the recent consensus on species relationships to include the timing of diversification, historical biogeography and the evolution of key phenotypic traits. It is ring bound, so it lies flat and fits nicely on a mayo stand in surgery, or on a counter during a postmortem evalu- ation. This book is visually appealing as it has many detailed, well- done, full color drawings of mouse and rat anatomy throughout. Topics are covered that I didn't expect, such as the detailed section on Juvenile Features, which includes drawings of mouse and rat pups at < 24 hours, 5 days, 11 days, 21 days, and adult, explaining how you would sex each species at each age. This book is endorsed by the American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS), and the value of this book for laboratory animal veterinarians is clear. I do, however, feel that this book could also be a valuable resource for clinical practitioners. As an exotic animal veterinarian, for example, I was very interested to see the detailed drawings of the mammary glands. Mammary gland tumors are a common issue in mice and rats, so it is good to be able to appreciate how far that tissue extends from the ventral area and the actual papillae. Many of the other sections would be useful in establishing the locations of structures for radiographs, surgery, sample collection, catheter placement, etc.Overall, I found this book to be very interesting, visually appealing, and a detailed exploration of the anatomy of the mouse and rat, with the differences between the species clearly highlighted in the text. This textbook would be a useful reference for laboratory animal veterinarians and exotic animal practitioners.Reviewed by Teresa Bousquet, DVM, Park Veterinary Centre, Alberta for The Canadian Veterinary Journal, March 2019.Table of ContentsBody Regions. Book SynopsisProvides the first substantive review of South American rodents. This book covers all native rodents of South America, the continental islands of Trinidad and Tobago, and the Caribbean Netherlands off the Venezuelan coast. It includes identification keys and descriptions of all genera and species.Trade Review"An amazing accomplishment. Rodents are by far the most diverse mammalian order on a global scale, and South America could justifiably be called the rodent continent. No other collection of authors could possibly produce a comparable work, nor is it likely that any other editors could have successfully elicited such results over the many years this volume has been in gestation. It will have a large and enduring influence on Neotropical vertebrate zoology." (Robert S. Voss, American Museum of Natural History)
