University Press of America The History of Doctrinal Classification in
Book SynopsisThis book examines the schemes for the classification of Buddhist texts and doctrines from their beginnings in the fifth century to Fazang (643-712). The panjiao schemes were among the methods Chinese Buddhist thinkers ordered and systematized the diversity of Buddhist thought. The schema appeared soon after the massive and comprehensive translations by Kumarajiva (334-412) and ended, for all intents and purposes, with Fazang. In this book, author Chanju Mun theorizes that there are two styles of panjiao schema: sectarian and ecumenical. Modern scholarship has extensive documentation of the sectarian style of panjiao schema, but little evidence of the ecumenical style. Through citations and allusions to schema in later presentations, this work not only establishes the existence of the ecumenical style; but also suggests that an interactive relationship exists between the two styles in the development and use of the panjiao schema. It is this interaction that is essential to our understanding of the history of doctrinal classification in Chinese Buddhism.Trade Review...this book will serve as a good reference source for information on the details of Chinese panjiao systems, and all students of Chinese Buddhism should be grateful for Dr. Mun's efforts in providing such a broad, comprehensive, and detailed study. -- Paul L. University Press of America Empowering Bernard Lonergans Legacy
Book SynopsisEmpowering Bernard Lonergan's Legacy offers an interdisciplinary approach to Lonergan's work. It presents a series of five feedback matrices to situate his work within a historical context. The matrices also serve to establish foundations for an interdisciplinary ethics and a method for interreligious dialogue. Feedback and matrix are key, but previously unstressed, notions in Lonergan's work. The book's final two collaborative feedback matrices could best be implemented in a proposed international Lonergan association. Raymaker argues that without such an association, Lonergan's breakthrough method cannot reach its interdisciplinary and collaborative potential. One of Lonergan's most important achievements was his development of foundations for the sciences, ethics, and interreligious dialogue. One can best empower Lonergan's legacy through a correct understanding and implementation of how the data of human consciousness affects all human knowledge and activities.Trade ReviewRaymaker’s command of the Lonergan corpus is clear. . . .It is definitely a rewarding read. * Journal of Jesuit Studies *Various contemporary books and movements, especially in ecology, point us towards the need for structures of action. . . . Hamilton Books Autumn Light
Book SynopsisAutumn Light: My Fifty Years in Zen is the story of one woman's witness to the remarkable half-century when Buddhist philosophy and practice took root in the religious landscape of the West.Author Edwina Norton has been a devoted practitioner of the Soto school of Zen for the past 50 years. In 2013, at the age of 78, she was ordained a Zen priest and immediately thereafter participated in a rigorous three-month training at Tassajara Zen Mountain Monastery in California. Told in the intimate voice of a dharma friend, Autumn Light weaves Norton's life experiences with the Zen teachings and practice that sustained her through personal and professional challenges while raising two sons alone. Now retired to the Pacific Northwest, she practices with a small, diverse Zen community of young and older Zen students. Her late-in-life commitment as a priest has sparked a series of challenges that have tested her resolve to follow the rigorous practices of the Zen tradition. PriesthoodTrade ReviewOver many years of Zen practice I have come to feel that Buddhist enlightenment is nothing more or less than being a normal functioning person, capable of living a full human life right to the end. It turns out that this simple normal thing is actually rare; and that it takes some doing. In Autumn Light: My Fifty Years in Zen, Edie Norton, Zen priest, shows us her long life of enduring what time and the world will do to you, and how, through the simple process of paying honest attention to what happens, while maintaining the disciplined practice of sitting in the silence of the purely present moment, an ordinary person can come to great wisdom and compassion. Especially moving is Edie’s detailed description (by far the longest part of her story, though it occupies only three months of her life) of her monastic training period at Tassajara Zen monastery, a place I know very well; it is the best and most thorough description of what happens there that I have ever read. I am so moved by this book. I know you will be too. Thank you Edie! -- Norman Fischer, poet, author, Zen priest, former co-abbot, San Francisco Zen CenterAmongst the multitude of spiritual biographies, Norton's stands out for its realism, subtlety, and depth. With the perspective of eight decades on the planet and her work with several generations of Zen teachers over the last four, Norton shows us how to enter into a deep relationship with our lives and conditioning and come out the other side with wisdom and grace. This journey is neither easy nor simple, but it's inspiringly, and challengingly, real. Highly recommended for all of us as we become ready to engage in the real work of growing up. -- Nomon Tim Burnett, Guiding Teacher, Red Cedar Zen Community, Bellingham, WashingtonTable of ContentsAuthor’s NotesNamesBibliographic CitationsAcknowledgmentsIntroductionChapter 1. Abbeville Press Inc.,U.S. Zen in Japanese Culture A Visual Journey through
Book SynopsisFormed by a convergence of the Buddha's teachings with Taoism and local tradition, Zen has had a profound impact on the art and culture of Japan. As a philosophy, Zen promotes a recognition of emptiness and impermanence. As an aesthetic, it is marked by striking simplicity and a reverence for space. It operates on the principle of wabi-sabi, the harmony found in all things transient and imperfect. Countless Japanese artists, artisans, and designers have engaged with the Zen tradition, their work the fruit of its wisdom. Author Gavin Blair has spent nearly two decades as a writer and journalist in Japan. In these pages, he shows how Zen has found expression in all aspects of Japanese culture, be it the tea ceremony, origami, or bonsai. Gorgeous full-colour photographs highlight the simple beauty of the Zen aesthetic, from the hanging noren curtains that adorn entrances and doorways, to the intricate craftwork of a wagasa umbrella. Together these images speak to the quiet power of Zen. A

State University Press of New York (SUNY) A Study of Dogen His Philosophy and Religion
Book SynopsisThis complete translation of Masao Abe''s essays on Dogen probes the core of the Zen master''s philosophy and religion. This work analyzes Dogen''s formative doubt concerning the notion of original awakening as the basis for his unique approach to nonduality in the doctrines of the oneness of practice and attainment, the unity of beings and Buddha-nature, the simultaneity of time and eternity, and the identity of life and death. Abe also offers insightful, critical comparisons of Dogen and various Buddhist and Western thinkers, especially Shinran and Heidegger.

State University Press of New York (SUNY) Zen and the Art of Postmodern Philosophy Two
Book SynopsisCarl Olson is Professor of Religious Studies at Allegheny College in Pennsylvania. His previous books include The Indian Renouncer and Postmodern Poison: A Cross-Cultural Encounter and The Theology and Philosophy of Eliade: A Search for the Centre. This book examines and compares the philosophical positions of various postmodern thinkers and Zen Buddhist philosophers on: language and play; modes of thinking; skepticism and doubt; self and other; time and death; nihilism and metaphysics; and the conception of the end of philosophy. The Zen thinkers dealt with are Dogen and Nishitani, and the Western thinkers are Derrida, Lacan, Heidegger, Lyotard, Foucault, Deleuze and Guatarri, Kristeva, and Levinas. Although each share similar notions concerning the shortcomings of representational thinking, major differences still exist. By clarifying these differences, Olson counters the tendency to overtly assert or covertly imply that postmodern and Zen philosophies are moving in the same direction. Some postmodern thinkers and Zen Buddhist philosophers share common philosophical ground with regard to a mutual philosophical attack and attempt to overcome the perceived shortcomings of the representational mode of thinking that conceives of the mind like a mirror and assumes a correspondence between appearance and reality that is supported by a metaphysical structure.
