Brill Human Rights in Development, Volume 9: Yearbook 2003
Book SynopsisThe current edition is the fifteenth in the series. Over the years the structure of the yearbook has shifted from that of a journal to a thematic anthology. The main editorship as well as the thematic expertise for this volume has been the responsibility of the Danish Institute for Human Rights. As the title of this volume, “Human Rights and Local/Living Law”, indicates, its focus is on the various forms of local, informal and/or customary law and their interaction with human rights. The Human Rights in Development series takes its starting point in a development perspective and aims to be topical, comprehensive, and multi-disciplinary, exemplifying the “cross-fertilization” of theoretical and practical approaches. Contributions are sought from researchers and practitioners in both donor and recipient countries. To ensure an increased focus on Southern perspectives, participation in the editorial work and inclusion of authors from a broad geographical scope has been, and is continuously, sought. The volumes published in the Human Rights in Development series, which for historical reasons still carry the word Yearbook in their title, are the result of a long-term collaboration between human rights research institutes and centres. Currently, the partners in the project include the Christian Michelsen Institute, Bergen; the Danish Institute for Human Rights, Copenhagen; the Icelandic Human Rights Centre, Reykjavik; the Ludwig Boltzman Institute of Human Rights, Vienna; the Netherlands Institute of Human Rights, Utrecht; the Norwegian Centre for Human Rights, Oslo; the Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, Lund; and the Åbo Akademi University Institute for Human Rights, Turku/Åbo. As in previous years, the publication is aimed at a broad audience, including government agencies, donor agencies, embassies, the press, non-governmental organisations, and the academic community.Table of ContentsIntroduction Lone Lindholt; The Global and the Local. Brill Korea Yearbook (2007): Politics, Economy and Society
Book SynopsisSouth Korea-oriented articles in the 2007 yearbook deal with online grassroots journalism and participatory democracy, the Lone Star scandal, changing perceptions of inward direct investment, the impact of China’s economic ascendance, modern cityscape and mass housing production, new ancestral shrines, and the political economy of patriotism. The yearbook is essential reading for anyone interested in modern Korea.Trade Review"Korea Yearbook will be an indispensable resource for anyone interested in this most fascinating of countries. An international team of top-flight experts not only cover the year's key political and economic developments in both North and South - and the growing relationship between them - but also focus in on an unusually wide range of more specific themes: from foreign investment and the Lone Star affair, via online journalism and new urban landscapes, to North Korean refugees in China. Much more than a compendium, this is an exhilarating tour of Korean economy, politics and society on both sides of the DMZ. Bravo!" Aidan Foster-Carter, Honorary Senior Research Fellow in Sociology & Modern Korea, Leeds University 'This volume is the most comprehensive and important summary of political and economic events published on contemporary Korea. In addition, it has a number of excellent essays on both the North and the South and their interrelations, and a variety of chapters on aspects of the political-cultural Korean scene. This annual work will be an essential companion to any researcher on modern Korea, and one that every library on foreign affairs will need. We look forward to the annual production of volumes of equal caliber.' David I. Steinberg, School of Foreign Service, Georgetown University "The 2007 Korea Yearbook provides fascinating and timely analysis on contemporary Korea, both North and South, by some of Europe and North America's most authoritative specialists. Encompassing a broad range of themes, including foreign relations, domestic politics, geography, archaeology, and popular culture, the volume, which includes a particularly helpful chronology of events in 2006, will, I have no doubt, prove indispensable to students, journalists, researchers and specialists working on East Asian affairs. Filling a critical vacuum in the field, the Korea Yearbook will rapidly become the definitive annual publication on modern Korean affairs." Dr. John Swenson-Wright, Lecturer in Japanese Politics and International Relations, East Asia Institute, University of Cambridge "A tremendously thorough, insightful and penetrating analysis, rich with information indispensable to the experts and useful to anyone interested in understanding the political, economic and diplomatic dynamics in both halves of the dynamic Korean Peninsula." Mark Fitzpatrick, Senior Fellow for Non-Proliferation, International Institute for Strategic Studies, Arundel House, London '... would benefit those who are interested in the Modern Koreas; it represents the best data currently available. ... Recommended. All college, research, and large public libraries; lower-level undergraduates and above, and general readers.' S. Africa is shown to us in all its colourful contradictions, a continent of hope and despair, of war – torn misery and perspectives, of huge investment and of massive corruption, of violence and repression but also of youthful reactions. The Yearbook includes an introduction about sub – Saharan Africa (written by the editors) and two articles, one about the United Nations and Africa and one about African – European relations. Charts with factual overviews are also included, although more analytical charts with facts and maps of the countries in question would be welcome. All in all, the Yearbook is an extremely useful tool for anyone interested in Africa but also an extremely interesting, full in details, book." – Sotirios S. Brill Yearbook of International Religious Demography 2015
Book SynopsisThe Yearbook of International Religious Demography presents an annual snapshot of the state of religious statistics around the world. Every year large amounts of data are collected through censuses, surveys, polls, religious communities, scholars, and a host of other sources. These data are collated and analyzed by research centers and scholars around the world. Large amounts of data appear in analyzed form in the World Religion Database (Brill), aiming at a researcher’s audience. The Yearbook presents data in sets of tables and scholarly articles spanning social science, demography, history, and geography. Each issue offers findings, sources, methods, and implications surrounding international religious demography. Each year an assessment is made of new data made available since the previous issue of the yearbook. The 2015 issue highlights both global and local realities in religious adherence, from the demographics of the world's atheists to the emigration of Christians from the Middle East. Other case studies include inter-religious marriage patterns in Austria, Muslim immigration to Australia, and methodological challenges in counting Hasidic Jews.Table of ContentsContributors are: Ariela Keysar, Brian Grim, Todd Johnson, Marcin Wodzinski, Raya Muttarak, Maria Rita Testa, Gina Zurlo, Yaghoob Foroutan, Marcin Stonawski, Vegard Skirbekk, Conrad Hackett, Michaela Potančoková, Phillip Connor, Peter Crossing, Juan Carlos Esparza Ochoa, María Concepción Servín Nieto

Brill Yearbook of Muslims in Europe, Volume 7
Book SynopsisNow in a new format with a more current and topical focus on a country level. While the strength of the Yearbook has always been the comprehensive geographical remit, starting with volume 7 the reports primarily concentrate on more specific and topical information. The most current research available on public debates, transnational links, legal or political changes that have affected the Muslim population, and activities and initiatives of Muslim organizations from surveyed countries are available throughout the Yearbook. At the end of each country report, an annual overview of statistical and demographic data is presented in an appendix. By using a table format, up-to-date information is quickly accessible for each country. To see how these changes affect the articles, please read this sample chapter about Austria. The Yearbook of Muslims in Europe is an essential resource for analysis of Europe's dynamic Muslim populations. Featuring up-to-date research from forty-six European countries, the reports provide cumulative knowledge of on-going trends and developments around Muslims in different European countries. In addition to offering a relevant framework for original research, the Yearbook of Muslims in Europe provides an invaluable source of reference for government and NGO officials, journalists, policy-makers, and related research institutions.Table of ContentsFrom the Preface: As in the past, this Yearbook includes reports on the situation of Muslims in almost every European country, 44 altogether in this volume. [...] While ensuring continuity to a certain extent, this volume of the Yearbook contains some significant changes in terms of its structure and format. Following discussions among members of the editorial team and feedback we have received from colleagues, we decided to give the country reports a more current and topical focus. Therefore, each report in this volume primarily concentrates on events, trends, and developments of 2014. As in the past, the reports provide factual (though not necessarily neutral) information. By focussing on developments of the previous calendar year, each report offers a fresh annual overview. Over the years, the reports provide cumulative knowledge of on-going trends and developments around Muslims in different European countries.

Book SynopsisThe Africa Yearbook covers major domestic political developments, the foreign policy and socio-economic trends in sub-Sahara Africa – all related to developments in one calendar year. The Yearbook contains articles on all sub-Saharan states, each of the four sub-regions (West, Central, Eastern, Southern Africa) focusing on major cross-border developments and sub-regional organizations as well as one article on continental developments and one on African-European relations. While the articles have thorough academic quality, the Yearbook is mainly oriented to the requirements of a large range of target groups: students, politicians, diplomats, administrators, journalists, teachers, practitioners in the field of development aid as well as business people.Trade Review'In 2012 the Yearbook received the African Studies Association and the African Librarians Council in the United States biennial Conover – Porter Award for Africa – related reference works and stands today as one of the best reference studies for Africa. Africa Yearbook also comes up with individual volumes, dedicated to specific countries (like Mozambique or Ghana) and based on the Yearbook chapters. [...] Reading the Yearbook, one truly grasps the reality of African life and especially the roller – coaster itinerary between huge development leaps (one should always bear in mind that for some time now Africa has been the most successful in terms of economic development region of the planet) and absolute misery and poverty. The same goes for everything from democracy (where one could at the same time make the exact opposite remarks) to sustainable development to counter – terrorism and peaceful resolution of differences in international relations. All in all, the Yearbook is an extremely useful tool for anyone interested in Africa but also an extremely interesting, full in details, book.' - Sotirios S. Brill Asian Yearbook of International Law, Volume 22 (2016)
Book SynopsisLaunched in 1991, the Asian Yearbook of International Law is a major internationally-refereed yearbook dedicated to international legal issues as seen primarily from an Asian perspective. It is published under the auspices of the Foundation for the Development of International Law in Asia (DILA) in collaboration with DILA-Korea, the Secretariat of DILA, in South Korea. When it was launched, the Yearbook was the first publication of its kind, edited by a team of leading international law scholars from across Asia. It provides a forum for the publication of articles in the field of international law and other Asian international legal topics. The objectives of the Yearbook are two-fold. First, to promote research, study and writing in the field of international law in Asia; and second, to provide an intellectual platform for the discussion and dissemination of Asian views and practices on contemporary international legal issues. Each volume of the Yearbook contains articles and shorter notes; a section on Asian state practice; an overview of the Asian states’ participation in multilateral treaties and succinct analysis of recent international legal developments in Asia; a bibliography that provides information on books, articles, notes, and other materials dealing with international law in Asia; as well as book reviews. This publication is important for anyone working on international law and in Asian studies.Table of ContentsFoundation for the Development of International Law in Asia (DILA) Editorial Note Seokwoo Lee and Hee Eun Lee Peaceful Uses of East Asian Seas: An Editorial Note Keyuan Zou Maintaining Maritime Peace and the Law of the Sea 1 Peaceful Use of the Sea and the Rule of Law Miyoshi Masahiro 2 Peaceful Proposals and Maritime Cooperation between Mainland China, Japan, and Taiwan in the East China Sea: Progress Made and Challenges Ahead Yann-huei Song 3 The South China Sea Disputes: An Opportunity for the Cross Taiwan Strait Relationship Yen-Chiang Chang Peaceful Uses of Marine Resources 4 Management of Fishery Resources: A Starting Point towards Cooperation in the East China Sea Kuan-Hsiung Wang 5 Framework for the Joint Development of Hydrocarbon Resources Robert Beckman and Leonardo Bernard 6 The International Legal Obligations of States in Disputed Maritime Jurisdiction Zones and Prospects for Co-operative Arrangements in the East China Sea Region David M.
