Search Press Ltd Painting Skies in Pastel: Creating Dramatic
Book SynopsisThis book will teach beginners and beyond the confidence and skills to create convincing, stunning skyscapes, from rich, glowing sunsets to bright clouds on a fresh, blustery day. This practical and inspiring book distils award-winning artist Sandra Orme's insights and experience into a complete course in the fundamentals of working with pastels. She explores those aspects of colour that are key to painting skies: how to retain vibrancy; how to avoid muddy colours through the use of 'bridging' colours; and how many pastels to use for the best effect. Each of the stage-by-stage projects focuses upon a particular sky effect, and each main stage is shown both before and after blending for clarity. Her 'Sky clinic', which finishes the book, offers more specialist and technical help on some of the common problems readers might encounter. Containing the all-important specifics on how to hold the pastel to make various marks, along with close-up pictures showing how the surface should look before you start to blend at each stage, this book assumes no prior knowledge – and contains information and insights of value to even the most confident artist.Trade ReviewAimed at beginners and those with some experience, Sandra Orme's Painting Skies in Pastel is a practical and inspiring book that serves a complete course in working with pastels. Each of the stage-by-stage projects focuses upon a particular sky effect, with clear images describing every step of the journey. There's plenty of general practical advice on using pastels from an artist renowned for her dramatic skyscapes – from how to hold the pastel itself to make the marks you want, to which surface to use and how to blend and layer colours. Sandra's paintings throughout are sure to inspire you. * Leisure Painter, November 2023 *It's always good when specific compositional elements and what we might call the minor media come together. It betokens a maturity of art instruction as well as a willingness of publishers to take a risk. And this was one risk certainly worth taking. Rather than being a short chapter, here skies get a whole book to themselves with everything from placid to dramatic fully covered. After the usual introduction to materials, Sandra gets to the meat of the subject with six detailed demonstrations, starting with a blue sky fronted by fluffy white clouds which have real substance due to careful use of shading. From here, we move on to the more dramatic, with a cloudburst darkening the sky and obscuring part of the foreground. Further chapters cover wind, sunset and a sunrise. This is an impressively thought-thorough work that covers a good variety of situations and builds your skills progressively. -- Henry Malt * The Artist, Issue 139 *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 What do you need? 8 Pastels and colour 26 Painting skies 34 Blue sky, white clouds 36 Cloudburst 48 Windy Weather 60 Vivid Sunset 72 Stormy Sunset 84 Delicate Sunrise 96 The pastel sky clinic 108 Index 128

Packed with inspirational finished paintings and step-by-step projects, this engaging book teaches you how to use watercolours in their purest form, without the addition of any other media, to create art that has a radiancy and luminosity that cannot be achieved in any other way.Trade ReviewMarch 2018 Watercolour is a magical medium when used correctly, adding sparkle and life to your paintings. Here, Peter Cronin, takes you back to basics, learning the traditions of watercolour in its purest form, allowing the radiancy of the medium to shine through. Aimed at artists of all levels, Peter shares his 25 years at teaching experience with us, including step-by-step projects, inspirational paintings and forewords by watercolour experts, David Bellamy and David Curtis. * The Leisure Painter *What a pleasure this book is. The kind that makes you want to pick up your paints and create a painting. This book helps you to master traditional watercolour skills to create watercolours with atmosphere. This course in a book gives tips on painting both indoors and out, painting from photographs, sketching, washes and a lot more. There are 5 step-by-step projects to practise your skills. This 144 page book is longer than many on the subject. It is filled with wonderful examples of watercolour. Wonderful book. * www.Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *February 2018 This beautiful celebration of the technical and creative capabilities of pure watercolour does the medium ample justice. Peter Cronin examines and demonstrates all the classic techniques - sketching, washes, wet-in-wet and drybrush - as well as the many ways of making mark. More importantly, he does this in a creative context, working towards a successful result rather than conducting exercises for their own sake. This is an inherently hands-on book; there is a strong sense of progression from techniques to outdoor work - something Peter is particularly keen on - and it would not be unreasonable to call this a masterclass, even though it remains thoroughly accessible at heart. Every page simply overflowers with useful information that is presented with admirable clarity. Peter is a master of his medium and it is a real privilege and pleasure to be able to work alongside him. * The Artist *As you might expect, Peter is a member of the Pure Watercolour Society and this is a hymn to the medium.. Forewords by David Curtis and David Bellamy should leave you in no doubt about how good it is. My first question on opening the book was: what is “pure” watercolour and how does it differ from any other kind? Peter helpfully enlightens us: “One may suspect that there is perhaps more to good painting than a huge toolkit, and it may be possible to take simple tools and use them well. This concept and approach to painting are at the heart of pure watercolour”. Put kindly, I take that to mean that simplicity is always best and that you should work with your imagination and media rather than your tools; they’re not what makes a painting, you do. In the wrong hands, this could come across as a fundamentalist rant, but Peter lets his brushes do the talking and the work here is simply extraordinary. If he wasn’t such a good explainer and demonstrator, you could easily be put off by his virtuosity. As it is, follow his advice carefully and you’ll stand a very good chance of finishing this book a much better painter then when you started. Watercolour is, as I think we all know, a very special medium. It’s one that does sometimes seem to have a mind of its own and is nowhere near as controllable as the opaque ones. The skill is to work with that and to learn ways of encouraging it to do what you want rather than trying to wrestle it into submission and merely working against it. Handle a wash sensitively, know when colours are going to bleed and blend and large sections will almost complete themselves. Peter explains much about the properties of watercolour and the techniques you’ll need. He also demonstrates extensively and these paintings will show you how to produce some really quite advanced work. It’s a bit of a tour de force. * Artbookreview.net *

In this book, she explains that abstract painting wasn’t something she set out to do. Instead, it came as a natural progression of her work. She shares her excitement about abstract painting, its definition, her study of painters known for this technique, and how it’s all enabled her to be open to the limitless possibilities of artistic expression. As do all of her books, this one starts with telling readers the materials they’ll need to begin. The author is honest with her recommendations of material costs and value. The book also notes the required tools and gives instructions on how to use them. There are pictorial step-by-step exercises for creating nature-based, mixed-media abstract art. The first activity is basic, but as readers progress through each one, the work becomes more complex. VERDICT An outstanding instructional art book with pictures that illustrate each step. Search Press Ltd The Kew Book of Painting Roses in Watercolour
Book SynopsisRoses have a special place in both art and culture across the world. Published in Association with Kew Gardens, this stunning book teaches you how to capture their character, colour and form in watercolour, and showcases both historical images from the Kew archives and the author's own extensive collection of inspiring paintings. Guided by watercolour artist and rose enthusiast Trevor Waugh, this book begins with clear explanations of essential watercolour techniques followed by a short project that allows the reader to explore the nature of watercolour in a practical way. Particular emphasis is placed on mixing colours cleanly in order to reproduce the purity and variety of this much-loved family of flowers. This is followed by sections on how to gather reference material; how to compose your own paintings; and how to inject your paintings with colour and light. All are accompanied by three further step-by-step projects, each culminating in a stunning painting of your own. Trade ReviewI have just started painting roses and I found this beautiful book easy to follow. It is ideal for new and experienced watercolour painters. It has beautiful illustrations. I adore roses and am looking forward to painting my first one. -- Julie Jenkins-Jessup * Amazon *This book is well written and informative. Lots of background information on the history of the rose, inspiring the reader to visit the rose section of Kew gardens for further study of these amazing flowers. Clear concise instructions about how to go about painting your own interpretation of the rose/s. Beautiful illustrations. A book to cherish. -- Mal Jenner * Amazon *Rose enthusiast and artist, Trevor Waugh, has worked closely with Kew Gardens to showcase historical images from the Kew archives as well as his own extensive collection of paintings. Painting Roses in Watercolour will show you how to capture the form, character and, most importantly, colour of a whole variety of roses, with clear explanations of the colour mixes, techniques used and projects to work through along the way. Sections on gathering reference material, composition and adding light and colour to your work are each accompanied by 3 step-by-step projects. * Leisure Painter *A new book by Trevor Waugh is always welcome and one on roses, which are always popular, and of which he is himself an enthusiast, all the more so. Add in the authority that the Kew connection provides and this has always looked like a sure-fire winner from the first proposal. For all this, devoting a whole book to a single species is a calculated risk. Are there enough people who want to study the subject in sufficient depths, and what about those for whom general colour and shape of flowers are more important than specific type? If you're still on board, you'll be rewarded with the whole gamut of colour, variety and a series of flower portraits - rather than detailed botanical illustrations - that explore colour, shape, petals, leaves and stems. This is every inch a classic Trevor Waugh book that does full justice to a broad and fascinating subject. -- Henry Malt * The Artist *If you're planning to paint flowers it's pretty much a racing certainty that roses will be high on the list. One of the most popular species, they offer an enormous variety of shapes and colours and there's a wealth of historical precedent to draw on. This is not, it should be said, a book of botanical illustration, nor will you find tracts of information about varieties and their names, except in so far as they relate to colour and shape. This is a book about painting and about interpretation and, if that's what primarily interests you, feel free to offer a prayer of thanks! Trevor is well known as a flower painter and his originals, cards and prints are in as much demand as his courses and workshops. His style is loose and painterly and is as much about interpretation as representation. None of this means that the projects and exercises here aren't recognisable as roses, just that they convey the spirit of the flower as much as the precise look. Trevor's blooms shimmer and dance in the breeze as surely as if they were alive in front of you. While the results may be short on fine detail, the structure of the book and the instruction most certainly aren't. As well as colour and shape, Trevor demonstrates how to handle stems, leaves and petals, He'll explain how to use colour to define depth and give body and perspective to your work. In the full demonstrations, he'll show you how to build up a complex subject in carefully-chosen stages. This is a beautiful guide from an artist of consummate skill. -- Henry Malt * Paint *This is the second volume in this new series and it offers a perennially popular subject. I said of its predecessor on orchids that, while not perhaps the most obvious subject, those flowers nevertheless offered a wide variety of shape, form and colour. Well, the same is true of roses, but coupled with the fact that examples are available in just about every garden. Am I implying that this should have been the one that introduced the series? You know what, maybe I am. Now that we have two volumes under our belt, it’s possible to take a broader look and it’s pleasing to say that, despite the Kew connection, these books are not heading in a botanical direction. That, while impressive, would be a shame because very few people want (or, perhaps, are able) to work in such precise detail. This, therefore, is primarily a Trevor Waugh book. If you’re familiar with his work, you’ll know that it’s primarily about colour and the feel, the character of the flower and not the minute details of its petals and stamens. I can’t claim to have audited every page, but I do not believe that the word “calyx” appears anywhere, and hurrah for that. So, what you get are results that look and, above all, feel like roses. They have depth, both in terms of form and colour, they shimmer and, just maybe, if you catch them quickly, dance in the breeze. Simply, they’re a joy. This is, of course, primarily a book about painting, not about roses. The usual preliminaries deal with colour and brushwork, with some deceptively simple exercises you really shouldn’t skip. These teach you far more than just elementary skills, even if that’s what they look like. For the reset, there are three full step-by-step projects that cover not only the whole flower, but also leaves, stems and the play of light. There’s nothing specific about perspective, but it’s in there – Trevor is very good at disguising the technical stuff and you’ll have got through it before you even realise it’s happening. Is this perfect? Maybe. Is it too good to be true? Certainly not. -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *The definitive guide to painting roses! Trevor is well known for his flower paintings and his interpretations capture not just the look of a bloom, but its character and essence. In this comprehensive volume, he demonstrated individual specimens and arrangements, where colour, light and shade play as much a part as shape and structure. There are exercises throughout that, as well as varying the pace of the work, also develop your skills with form, light and colourways. Each section concludes with a step-by-step project that brings everything together in a complete painting. This is an informative, but above all enjoyable, look at the bright, fascinating and beautiful world of roses. -- The SAA * The SAA Catalogue 19/20 *Learn how to create stunning paintings of roses in watercolour that capture the essential beauty of this much-loved flower. Book Synopsis"There’s no grandstanding or showmanship, just solid, honest instructions and demonstrations that produce solid, worthwhile results." - Artbookreview.net Snow scenes make wonderful subjects for beginner watercolour artists - all you need is the know-how and confidence to give snow depth, sparkle and just the right amount of colour. Popular artist and author Grahame Booth will show you how to achieve beautiful results, using just three brushes, three paints and nine fantastic projects. Starting with a small but perfectly formed tool kit of three brushes, a mixing palette, watercolour paper and three tubes of paint, Grahame guides you step-by-step through nine projects, starting with a simple scene and progressing on to more complex ones. Even if you have never picked up a paintbrush, you will be amazed at what you will achieve by the end of this book. And along the way you will have learnt all the skills you need to start painting wonderful snow scenes of your own.Trade ReviewImagine being able to recreate a wintry landscape, using just three colours. Impossible, you might think by artist Grahame Booth reveals how to do just that in his book Watercolour Snow Scenes. Taking you step-by-step through nine projects, you'll be painting masterpieces in no time. * Crafts Beautiful *Using just three colours, Grahame Booth shows us how to paint snow scenes in watercolour in this new addition to Search Press's Take Three Colours series. The pared-down painting kit keeps everything simple. Grahame leads us through nine step-by-step projects progressing in complexity as we work through them. There's a helpful chapter on how to transfer your drawing to the watercolour paper and plenty of useful tips and advice to give you the confidence to have a go and develop your own snow scenes. * Leisure Painter - December 2020 *If the idea of using colours for snow – even if it is only three – seems like a contradiction read on. Snow, of course, isn't white but takes on the colour of the things that surround it, especially the sky or shadows of building and vegetation. Grahame's message is simplify – look, visualise and interpret. Don't overcomplicate your mixes or fiddle with details and you'll soon find that less – a lot less – really is more. In this easy-to-follow guide, Grahame will guide you through shadows, reflections, hills, trees, water and even a sunset in nine straightforward projects. * SAA *Search Press have become adept at producing series that include books that stand on their own merits rather than simply fitting into pre-defined slots. Much of that is down to having as simple an idea as possible. As a result authors don’t need to go into contortions to get the correct shape and are free to express themselves as they normally do. This makes the whole idea easy to explain to those same authors so that everyone has a clear idea of what’s required. That, of course, is the key to any successful book, but it’s surprising (and rather alarming) how often it gets missed. If everyone’s pulling in different directions, the dog’s sure not to miss out on its dinner. All of which is a preamble to saying that I like this a lot. Snow is as tricky a subject as water: it’s one of those things that isn’t really there. Water relies on reflection, but snow can be even more difficult. No, it’s not just matter of a large tube of titanium white or areas of paper left intentionally blank. Snow doesn’t reflect exactly, and it has an identifiable form in a way that water doesn’t, but it takes its appearance from the light and shade that fall on it. Cue plenty of opportunities for over-complication and far too many colours in the mix. And, as if by magic – 3 colours and 3 brushes. Less is more, simplification is always going to be your friend. As the nights draw in and who knows what precipitation the weather will bring, here’s a guide that will tell you all you need to know. No, not everything – that would be a tall order in just 9 projects – but enough for you to understand what’s happening on your palette, brushes and paper and you didn’t really need more than that, did you? -- Henry Malt * Artbookreview.net *Table of ContentsIntroduction 6 Using the colours 8 Using the brushes 9 Projects 10 Snowy Field 10 Snowy Hills 16 Snowy Road 20 Streamside Tree 26 Winter Trees 32 Snowy Sunset 38 Snowy Mountains 46 Winter Cottage 52 Vermont Landscape 58 Transferring a drawing 64

Lund Humphries Publishers Ltd Fidelia Bridges: Nature into Art
Book SynopsisFidelia Bridges (1834-1923) painted pictures that critics praised for their ability to exude the fragrance of field flowers and glow with the plumage of birds. Raised in Salem and long residing in Connecticut, she maintained a studio in New York City, where she exhibited her art for over forty years at the National Academy, American Watercolor Society and other prestigious venues. Transforming flower painting from a domestic outlet for female amateurs to a marketable commodity for professionals, she never wavered in her conviction that women had the right to shape independent careers on their own terms. She delineated both cultivated flowers and clumps of weeds with an intensity of focus unmatched by any other artist of her era. Often, she combined plants with local birds to convey a sophisticated understanding of their environmental interaction that encouraged others to appreciate and conserve nature. She made an extended European tour in the 1860s and regular trips to Great Britain in later years but preferred home nature.Assembling a cross-section of her stunning oil paintings, watercolours, chromolithographs and illustrated volumes for the first time, and analysing them against letters, diaries and periodical reviews, Fidelia Bridges combines a recovery of the artist’s biography with close readings of her artworks. Living an outwardly conventional life, she embraced the bicycle and later the automobile as vehicles of female liberation, cultivated her garden with the skill of a horticulturalist, and left a lasting pictorial legacy to be found in US public museums and private collections nationwide.Table of ContentsAcknowledgements; Preface; Introduction; 1. Lorene Edwards Forkner brings horticultural wisdom to the daily, restorative practice of painting. With a few tubes of paint and a bit of time and attention, she immerses herself in the wonder that can be found in her own backyard. What began as a hundred-day project in the aftermath of a devastating loss has become a personal journey, sustained over many years. With this gem of a book, we are all invited to take that journey with her. -- Amy Stewart * New York Times bestselling author *From the evocative title of this heavenly missive, you might think you need to be a gardener or a painter to harvest the full richness of its many gifts, but you do not. You need only be human—as worried and full of wonder, as pained and patient (or impatient), peculiar and particular as all of us. This collection of careful color studies of botanical (flowers, leaves, seeds, stems) and botanically adjacent (think time worn stones, beach bleached shells) treasures is offered out to us by the knowing hands of a gardener, the refined eye of an artist, the time-tested taste of a cook, and the heart of a compassionate mother. On one level it is an encouragement to practice being present to practice paying attention and taking good care in and of the natural world, to practice really seeing; but on its highest level, it is a much needed (longed for?) reminder born of both joy and deep grief to live your own days (and thus life) in full color, in and out of the garden. A plea to savor and cherish every last living vibrant cell of it in the process: the extraordinary, the quotidian, the steadfast constants, and the heartbreakingly fleeting. A sometimes funny, sometimes sobering prayer to notice and celebrate all the variations and permutations of green (for survival), red (for ripeness), pink (for extravagance), yellow (for luminosity), orange (for energy) and brown—the foundation of all living things—in all their colorful diversity. As Lorene might say, “Yes, please.” See for yourself. You will never see your garden, food, art, sky, ground (life) quite the same again. -- Jennifer Jewell * creator of the Cultivating Place, Conversations on Natural History and the Human Impulse to Garden podcast *“While I walk away from this book with some [ideas for] plants I'd like to find room for (and a new appreciation of the role of color in my garden), the real lessons of the book are in the insights gleaned—and so generously shared with us—from blending a daily painting practice with a lifelong love of plants. Edwards’s poignant wisdom leaves me feeling grounded, grateful, and in really good company, whether with her words or with the living things right outside my door.” -- Johanna Silver * gardener and author *“Lorene Edwards Forkner's Color In and Out of the Garden is a gentle call to attention, ‘looking in and looking out.’ Open it anywhere to find yourself transported to the lush offerings of a garden, to ‘seeing’ color you hadn’t noticed, and the poetry, philosophy, and natural history of plants: revelations with life lessons that will expand your view.” -- Sally Schneider * creator of Improvised Life *

Search Press Ltd Take Three Colours: Watercolour Flowers: Start to
Book SynopsisTempted to start painting but not sure where to start? Learn how to paint beautiful watercolour flowers using just 3 colours, 3 brushes, a plastic palette and a watercolour pad. This book will build your skills through easy exercises, starting from the simplest of tulips and working up to a stunning rose. Clear advice and step-by-step photography will show you exactly what to do at each stage. No drawing necessary – you can simply trace and transfer the basic drawings from the finished paintings, which are shown at full size. Colours used: cadmium yellow pale, ultramarine blue and permanent rose. Brushes used: Round brushes size 10 (Large), size 8 (Medium), and a size 4 (Small).Trade ReviewMany readers will remember using watercolor paint in childhood, but fine-art watercolor is a whole different thing and can feel intimidating for someone just beginning. King recognizes this and starts with a minimum of equipment, the most basic techniques, and a very common subject: flowers. Using just the three primary colors of paint, three brushes, and one pad of watercolor paper, the novice painter can get started with a nominal investment in materials. Starting with a single tulip and progressing through nine increasingly complex flowers, King teaches the reader three techniques in each painting, encouraging confidence and mastery along the way, and adding up to a well-rounded knowledge base. For those who find the blank page daunting, King also includes instructions for using tracing paper and pencil to transfer the outlines of her finished paintings onto watercolor paper. Terminology is explained as it comes up in “jargon buster” feature boxes, and a preview of what the reader will learn in the following project is offered at the end of each set of instructions. -- Anne Heidemann * Booklist *Flower painting being the tricky subject that it is, anything that simplifies the painting process has to be a good thing, just as long as it doesn’t over-simplify and trivialise. It’s therefore something of a relief to be able to say that Julie manages her task with considerable success. You will, I’m sure, be amazed by the variety of tints and hues she manages to achieve with just three base colours (the same ones throughout). Yes, if you look closely, the results lack some of the subtlety that could be achieved with more, but you wouldn’t feel dissatisfied with the results, for all that. I also have a feeling that the reproduction may not be as sharp as it could be, and that what you see on paper might be better that it is on the pages of the book. I also wouldn’t have chosen that sunflower as the cover illustration as it really doesn’t convey the variety of what you can achieve. Please don’t let it put you off. In keeping with the series style, there are plenty of generously-sized stage illustrations, short captions telling you what’s going on and sidebars that include a variety of tips and jargon busters. With 9 projects and clear instruction, this is the ideal place to start on a rewarding subject. You might also find it useful if you’ve already had a go, but are struggling. * Artbookreview.net *Keen to learn how to paint in watercolors from scratch but don’t want to spend too much in case it is not for you? Search Press’ Take Three Colours series is ideal as you only have to buy a few materials and each primer takes you through several skill building projects ideal for the complete beginner. I LOVE this idea and think you could do a series like this for most hobbies. Trying to work out the minimum amount you need to actually make something but worried you won’t take to it concerns everybody taking the plunge with a new interest. With this series you just buy three colors, three brushes, some paper and a cheap palette. The author takes you step by step with nine projects, each one teaching you several essential skills. The final painting is shown life size (A4) so you can trace it off and transfer it to your paper (instructions included). As well as Search Press’ trademark staged photographs there is a useful list of the skills covered, “jargon buster” boxes and even a closeup of a palette with the mixed colors on it. Also included is help on how to mix them and various tips. My only complaint is that the shot of the pencil tracing could be a bit easier to see; knowing how much detail has been included in a tracing is very helpful for a beginner. But this is a very minor gripe and the rest of the book gets an unreserved five stars for being a truly accessible primer a total beginner can actually learn from with no prior knowledge. Soon you can have a portfolio of lovely floral paintings including tulip, rose, passion flower, sunflower, poppies and more. At the front of the book is a helpful page showing thumbnails of all nine paintings and all for under a tenner (or under $15 US). More please, covering other types of paint and topics. Very highly recommended. * Myshelf.com *Always wanted to work with watercolours but don't know how to begin? This book shows you how to achieve good results with just three colours and three brushes. In this way it limits what you have to spend on materials and concentrates on getting you painting. It shows how to mix paints and has step-by-step guides throughout covering those popular features of landscape painting such as skies, water, woodland and mountains. There are nine easy projects to build your skills. In just a few simple steps, you will feel like a painter. A confidence-building book for anyone interested in watercolour. * Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk *August 2017 Watercolour Flowers by Leisure Painter contributor Julie King is part of the Take Three Colours series from Search Press (also includes Watercolour Landscapes by Geoff Kersey) which aims to encourage beginners to start painting using just three colours, three brushes and nine easy projects. Search Press Ltd Paint Pad Poster Book: Country Scenes: 5
Book SynopsisFill your home with original, professional art - and learn to paint at the same time. This innovative new series is a poster book, an art pad and a step-by-step painting book all rolled into one! Each of the five A3 posters are ready to pull out, frame and display. In addition, you can enjoy the calming pursuit of painting each of the pictures yourself using the pre-printed outlines - so no drawing required. The large, landscape format of the book allows each stage of painting to be clearly and comprehensively explained with an innovative annotation approach. Simply pull out the simple, stage-by-stage tutorial pages and pin them to your easel, then paint directly onto the watercolour outline for fantastic results. In this title, Country Scenes, learn to paint a range of inspiring landscapes: journey to a tranquil New Forest stream, a rolling Tuscan hillside and a snowy mountain river, and enjoy 5 masterclasses in landscape painting. Trade ReviewIf you have always wanted to try your hand at painting but don’t know where to start, Search Press has come up with an innovative solution with this new series. Inside this large format (A3) book are five sheets of watercolor paper with outlines printed on them plus fully illustrated tutorials and a brief overview. Work through the projects and you will have a set of five elegant landscapes for your walls. I love this idea; surely the best one yet that Search Press has come up with for total beginners. It keeps the budget down as you don’t have to buy the paper, just the relevant paints and brushes listed, plus primer to prime the paper and some masking fluid. There are even suggestions as to further economy such as using an old plate instead of buying a palette and using an old brush rather than buying a masking tape version. At this time of year you could imagine that this book plus a few of the necessary items would make a wonderful present for a would-be artist. Subjects include a river in winter, tranquil clearing with a church and bluebells, a summer stream, farm in Tuscany and my favorite scene of a meadow in spring with blossoms, trees and a stream. Each picture is shown full sized to give you an idea of what it can look like completed, although it suggests that you can use the outlines for your own interpretation too. Instructions are in color and show up to four stages of the relevant painting with arrows to short sections of text telling you what to do next. This is a good approach to a practical task and eliminates ploughing through pages of text and encourages you to get on with the actual painting. You don’t even have to stick to watercolors, as these pictures can also be completed using pastels, colored pencils or acrylics. At the front there are tips on priming, using masking fluid and how to use the book. It is also ideal as a refresher course or for anybody who can already paint but wants to try a new medium, or a new subject. In short, I can recommend this new series to anybody who wants to have a go at painting without too much startup expense but plenty of foolproof instructions. More titles please! If landscapes aren’t your thing or you still have some blank walls to fill, the other title in the series is Flowers. This follows exactly the same pattern with five floral studies of tulips, irises, sunflowers, roses and poppies. ISBN:9781782217558. -- Rachel Hyde * myShelf.com *Search Press's new series, Paint Pad Poster Books offer a poster book, art pad and step-by-step painting book all in one. Search Press Ltd Watercolour Landscapes for the Absolute Beginner
Book SynopsisIn Watercolour Landscapes for the Absolute Beginner, artist and teacher Matthew Palmer guides beginners through their first steps in watercolour and shows what incredible landscapes can be achieved in this exciting medium. Step-by-step exercises, mini projects and six longer projects help you to build essential skills and allow you to produce a range of landscapes you will be proud of. Vital drawing skills are explained and demonstrated, along with key techniques such as how to use resists; colour mixing; painting natural-looking foliage; using the dry-brush technique to create intricate detail, and using scratch-out techniques to add sparkle and movement to water. The exercises are ideal for beginners and the main projects will also build skills for improving artists. Matthew has an accessible style, with plenty of tips and tricks for beginners to make things easier. A huge wealth of finished paintings provide ideas and inspiration for your own future watercolour landscapes. Full-size pull-out outlines are provided for the final projects. Includes material previously published in Matthew Palmer's Step-by-Step Guide to Watercolour Painting (2018), but with the addition of three brilliant new projects, many new illustrations and extensive textual revisions.Trade Review“There are no mistakes, only lessons,” says Matthew Palmer. With that attitude, he aims to take the complete novice and turn them into a painter. Could that be you? There are only six long step-by-step projects in here, because instead Matthew’s focus is on laying the foundations needed to succeed in painting watercolour landscapes. He takes the opening section of every watercolour guide and expands it. Leaving no stone unturned, from brush hairs to sketching chimneys, Matthew sets out to prepare you for everything. -- Andrew Turner * Papercrafter *Many artists tout their books as suitable for beginners; thirty-plus-year veteran watercolourist Palmer more than fulfils that promise. Every tool and material are scrutinized, with advice about buying the best, if possible. (One caveat: he tends to promote his own line of products heavily throughout.) Composition, through sketching, is first explained in terms of outlines and shapes, then expanded. Colour, of course, covers all the usual subjects (e.g., the colour wheel), then delves into the hues appropriate for water, sky, foliage, and the like. After all the preliminaries (including top techniques like salt and splattering), the six projects appear with every step documented, aligned with his "absolute beginner" guide. Foldout pages with outlines to copy start the painting process. Select from familiar pictures such as the northern lights, a waterfall in summer, a field of wildflowers. Tips proliferate, ranging from how to avoid ripping paper to an illustrated troubleshooting section. Could anyone flunk this beginner's school? Unlikely, if all directions are absorbed and followed. -- Barbara Jacobs * Booklist *This book has everything for the 'Absolute Beginner' and for those who have been painting for a while. It covers every aspect of watercolour painting from the beginning – materials, sketching the outline, perspective, colour, techniques, painting skies, water and trees – as well as troubleshooting. It takes the reader through each step, even giving outlines for the six projects it includes, so that if you do not know where to start it is all there for you. The quality of the tuition is second to none as is the quality of the illustrations. Another quality book not only from Matthew Palmer, but also from the publishers, Search Press. -- Barbara Marjoram * Customer Review *I absolutely love this watercolour book as I like to learn new skills or improve them when I get time to do so away from art college. The guides are simple and easily readable and as I am autistic so its important that all steps are clearly presented in order to further my understanding like everyone else. -- Chloe Elizabeth * Customer Review *Using material previously published in his Step-by-Step Guide to Watercolour Painting, 2018, Matthew Palmer's Watercolour Landscapes for the Absolute Beginner includes step-by-step exercises, mini projects and six longer projects to help you paint convincing landscapes in watercolour. Aimed specifically at the complete beginner, the instruction is clear and encouraging, with concise information on key techniques and plenty of tips and tricks to help along the way. Pull-out outlines of the main projects are included to get you started in colour straight away without the need for preparatory drawings. * Leisure Painter *In this thorough and enjoyable course, Matthew explains how to work from photographs, creating the basic sketch, the use of colour and washes and how to build a landscape in simple stages. Search Press Ltd Jean Haines’ Atmospheric Watercolours: Painting
Book SynopsisAccomplished artist Jean Haines shares her passion for watercolours in this wonderfully practical book. Known for her exciting techniques and love of colour, Jean takes you on an inspirational painting journey on which you’ll encounter, amongst other things, magical watercolour flow, glorious washes, sunbursts, and a magnificent ‘hotting it up’ finale. With her simple exercises, clear advice and easy-to-follow projects, Jean pushes the boundaries and will alter the way you think about watercolours and painting for ever. With a selection of popular subjects, including animals, landscapes, buildings, flowers and people, there is something for everyone here, whatever their artistic ability.Trade ReviewTHE ARTIST MAGAZINE : BOOK REVIEW Jean Haines' Atmospheric Watercolours The book is nothing less than a paean to the wet in wet technique. If that's your thing, prepare to be amazed. Jean Haines credits Jean Louis Morelle, and in many ways this book is the sequel to Morelle's remarkable, but very technical work, showing the wealth of creative possibilities the technique offers. A lot of the images are barely recognisable and yet you instinctively know what they are. I wish I knew how, because this is impressionism taken to its logical conclusion and reminiscent of some of the later work by JMW Turner. You will have to take it from me that "First signs of a face appearing magically from a first wash of watercolour" is pure alchemy. This is an extraordinary book. * The Artist Magazine *July 12 Nothing short of fantastic. I first fell in love with Jean's work when she wrote 'Colour and Light in Watercolour', I thought it was wonderful and still do. Yet with this new book, we've moved on ten steps ahead. You have to buy this book if you are remotely interested in watercolour. Known as a difficult medium to master, Jean shares her knowledge and style so that we can learn and improve. Her loose style won't be to everyone's taste, but you don't know until you try it. Painting this ways liberates your art. The book covers many subjects including flowers, portraits and animals so it has wide appeal. It will take you from first steps yet is still suitable for experienced watercolorists. I love it. * Karen Platt Yarnsandfabrics.co.uk/crafts *May 12 This is one of those books that you can’t help but pick up and flick through even if you are not a watercolourist. Beautifully put together with wonderful images throughout, with 176 pages full of tips, techniques, watercolour secrets, and chapters with titles like: Glorious washes, Magical water flow, Sunbursts, Hotting it up, Fabulous effects, and Suggestive seduction, etc, how can anyone not be enticed to want to read this??? Even though I have only skimmed through this book tonight, I already know this book will more than satisfy that hunger I have for this style. I will savour and enjoy more slowly the wonderful 33 image step by step showing how to paint a historic door in Venice, a 28 image step by step showing how to paint a three sheep composition, sections on textural effects with cling film and salt, etc, and lots... and lots more... I know this book will never make it to my art book shelf as it will be in constant use with me referring back to it frequently. * lauramoorewatercolourart.blogspot.co.uk *Summer 12 Encouraged by the saying 'don't be a sheep, be unique', Jean Haines hopes to bring the best out of all artists by being more creative with the colours they use, the freedom of their brushstrokes, or simply an attitude of mind. Techniques, such as using your brush to its full potential, applying washes and, in particular, using colour, are described in great detail with many step-by-step examples and projects to follow. If nothing else, Jean's work is sure to inspire you to let go of some of your inhibitions. It simply dazzles on the page and makes you want to grab your brushes and get going straight away. * Leisure Painter, The *July 12 Hi Jean, I have just bought your new book and love it!! I had to let you know that I think your work really is lovely and so atmospheric...........as the title says!!!! I also have your first book! Oh to be able to paint nearly as good as you do!! Warm Regards, Colleen. * Customer *July 12 Hi Jean, Just wanted to say that I bought your book "Atmospheric Watercolours" yesterday and what an absolutely fabulous book it is. I have dozens of art books but this is far and away the very best. As an artist, I know that you will understand if I tell you that it "moved me". I connected straight away when I read about how we need to create and not care about what anyone else thinks.....I have often worried that I might be doing something wrong or with the wrong techniques and yet I wanted to do my own thing ! (the rebel artist in me...lol) It reminded me of when I found a super freeform crochet book over 30 years ago, by the lovely Sylvia Cosh (sadly no longer with us). When I found her book , I knew that I had found what I had been looking for in my crochet and went on to spend many happy years designing beautiful knitwear. Sadly because of repetitive strain to my wrists from all the crochet, I had to give it up and so turned to art but couldn't find anything except the conventional style, and this wasn't what I was looking for. YOUR book has inspired me just like Sylvia's book did all those years ago. I have joined the SAA as there are no art groups near to me and try to paint every day. Thank you for such wonderful inspiration...I now can't wait to get painting and see what evolves. Thank you Brenda Cumming * Customer *Sept 12 Search Press doesn't publish many hardcover books, but when it does, I expect something a bit special. This is no exception to the rule, so prepare yourself for a large format coffee table book filled with sumptuous illustrations. Her is a book to get your creative juices flowing and make you abandon the coffee in favor of your easel. Well, maybe that is overdoing it a bit, but the subtitle of this book is painting with freedom, expression and style. Ms Haines' painting style verges on the abstract in many cases, and comes across as being free and spontaneous. East meets west here as the author talks about her love of Chinese brushwork and brings some of that to her work, as well as a lot of sheer enthusiasm and a throwing away of the rulebook. I'm always keen on people who do that, and there are lots of exercises to try out to free up one's hand and generally have fun with paint. Of course, you can expect all the usual topics found in books on watercolor painting: working with color, mixing washes, choosing materials etc. But here they are explored in unconventional ways, and I can recommend this book to all those who think they can't paint and find most painting styles too rigid and structured. There is a lot in here and all of it is suitable both for beginners and those who have painted for years but want to try something new. A lovely book that should have wide appeal, I enjoyed Ms Haines' huge enthusiasm for her subject. * Myshelf.com *Aug 12 WOW! is just a big understatement. Jean's latest book "Atmospheric Watercolors" is packed full of her gorgeous paintings which include florals, portraits, animals, street scenes and architecture as well as fabulous textures and stunning color palettes. Did I mention 'WOW?' I had a wonderful time, paging through the book, trying out some of Jean's techniques and following along with her step-by-step demos and lessons. She is not only a talented painter but a gifted instructor as well.-paintedheartstudio.blogspot.co.uk * Customer *Dear Jean, I am writing back to say I have now picked up Atmospheric Watercolours from the library - I had to wait for it to arrive in the country! I haven’t finished it yet but I love it already, and have ordered a copy of my own. It is hard to explain how wonderful your books are. It is partly your style of painting which is just amazing, and partly the way you write so enthusiastically. In any case I feel like I have found a way forward with my painting, and I am very excited about it!-Stephanie Parkes * Customer *Sept 12 Hi, Jean! I know you must read a lot of e-mails about your latest book, Atmospheric Watercolours, but I had to send you at least one more thanks for such a great book and inspiration!!!! I never took you seriously when I read, "If you don't wish to be addicted to watercolour as I am, now is the time to escape." I feel like the flood gates have been opened and I can't stop painting just one more! What I really appreciated was that you didn't start your watercolor book out with all the "don'ts" (don't use cadmiums, etc.)... but encouraged me to break all the rules, so to speak - and even paint for the bin... and I am having a ball! Sometimes I think a necessary step to "loosening up" is that one can actually paint in a tight, exact manner... then choose "not" to. Your book came at a perfect time for me, and I am really enjoying the journey! Thank you so much for such a well written, honest and inspirational book!~Linda Borch * Customer *Sept 12 Dear Jean, I felt that I had to contact you to express my gratitude for your book "Atmospheric Watercolours ". I have been struggling with watercolour for some time now without much success but after reading your book and trying out some of the exercises, I have managed to do some work that pleases me although I know I need a lot more practice. Thank you so much for the encouragement which your book gives!-Geri Bunting (retired teacher, Belfast ) * Customer *December 2014 DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK Unless you want to be completely addicted to painting watercolours. I never buy art books as most are an ABC on how to paint a tree, landscape, vase of flowers and everyone who reads the book produces almost identical paintings. This book will not do that. Jean teaches you techniques that you can apply to your own style of painting, so you unlock the artist within you and develop and grow as an authentic artist in your own right. I have painted subjects I never dreamt I could paint before I read this book. Jean is such a charismatic person, her enthusiasm for her subject is contagious. So, if you buy this book and cannot concentrate on anything for thinking of painting, or can't sleep for the same reason, don't blame me, I did try and warn you! p.s. The first painting I did after learning Jean's techniques helped me secure my first exhibition! * Laura Wilson - Waterstones *May 12 Well haven't finished it yet but am savouring every page!!!! It's stopped me eating and sleeping a good thing maybe??? Haven't done a book review before (and after reading this you may think "hope she never does one again!!!!") and maybe I should wait until it's finished but am just a lot excited about this one!!!!! It is full of Jean's secrets written in her own easy, inimitable, encouraging way, as if she is talking intimately to you, the reader. She shares moments and memories of her past..... a lovely insight into the Jean we don't get to hear about..... I have done the first few exercises in the book following just what she did and guess what?????? They turned out and I think the penny might finally be dropping. If any of you have been lucky enough to either see Jean demonstrate or go to a workshop, she makes things look so easy.... well we all know it isn't... right???? Easy comes from years of practice, experience and desire, but.... and this is what I really want to share, this book opens the door and certainly for me has given me those all so sought after glimpses of what I'm looking for...... that's why I was so excited about it and apart from everything else, retiring, exhibition on Saturday, holiday next Wednesday etc etc....... well you can now understand why I couldn't sleep. I said to my husband at 3:30 I think I might get up... he said "What are you going to do.... paint?" Of course I said no....... hmmmm thought she indignantly does he really think I was going to get up and paint at 3;30 in the morning, how ridiculous!!!!!! Am beginning to think he knows me too well (note to self... need to become more mysterious!!!) So hope to read and reread more today and the next weeks and months of course, I think Jean was wise to have this published in hardback as I think it will become one of those "bible" sort of books which in paperback may become too worn!!! Am sorry for those of you who have to wait for a copy, it will be worth the wait I promise!!! Will keep you updated and maybe write another review when I have had more chance to work through and digest... it is a treat for sure. I normally like to flick through books before I buy but I had faith that this one would be what I was looking for and it is ...... in bucket loads!!!!!! It is a book full of hope, colour and life and I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do!! * judithfarnworthart.blogspot.co.uk *May 12 Dear Jean, I know we have never met but i wanted to write to express my thoughts to you. I received your stunning new book today and I simply cant wait to try out some ideas. I began working as an artist a year ago after a lot of personal trauma. Over the years I have dipped into a lot of art books, but I have to say that this is the most inspiring and liberating book that I have ever seen. Thank you so very much, and i wish you every success. Yours in gratitude, liz Bolloten * Customer *June 12 This is one of those books where the above-the-title billing for the author is actually more than just a conceit. To call this book just “Atmospheric Watercolours” would completely miss the point. Atmosphere is one of the hardest words to define in relation to art. On the one hand, we all know what we mean by it: it’s the sense of time and place that can be achieved by the use of washes, glazes and wet-in-wet, but also by composition and colour choice – pretty much the standard technical arsenal, in fact. On the other hand, it’s a woolly term that really means nothing except that the work has an essential quality of je ne sais quoi. So that’s a good start, then. And what do we actually have here? Well, it’s easy to say what Jean Haines’ work is. It’s definitely well into the spectrum of abstraction, and she uses a lot of washes to create a sense of what her subjects are about, more than just what they are. Is this “atmospheric”? Not really, if you buy my definition, but do please feel free to come up with a better word. I do think we’re getting there, though. I don’t think this could really be classed as an instruction manual, even though there are plenty of demonstrations and lots of discussions of how Jean works – for someone with such a personal style, she’s actually very good at this part. Yes, it’s practical, but the approach isn’t half so much do-this, do-that as an analysis of Jean’s own working methods and, through that, showing you how you can achieve not so much the same thing, as something similar. This is perhaps a first, and an invaluable aid for anyone wanting to move beyond representation and to develop their own way of describing what they see. If this sounds like the heart of abstraction, it is, and this book is probably one of the best ways of learning about a technique that so frequently defies description and really has to be absorbed rather than learnt. If you’ve followed what I’ve said, then I’m pretty sure you’ll like the book. If not, proceed with caution; it may be that you’re not ready for it yet – but persevere! * Artbookreview.net *Table of ContentsA unique and inspiring book suitable for people of all artistic abilities. Packed full of exercises, projects and easy-to-follow advice, as well as numerous finished paintings to excite and inspire you. Jean Haines’ techniques can be applied to flowers, landscapes, buildings, animals and people, so whatever subject you are interested in, you will find it in this book.

Temple Lodge Publishing The Archetypal Human-Animal: Rudolf Steiner's
Book SynopsisRudolf Steiner's watercolour painting 'The Archetypal Human-Animal' presents us with the enigmatic image of a strange creature apparently swimming in water. It has a human profile, showing a clearly outlined nose and slightly-opened mouth, with a mysterious eye, almost concealed in its greenish hair. It has appendages similar to hands and feet, and dark-blue plant-like forms float about in the water beneath the creature's bright red and yellow body. Only the title provides us with a clue to its meaning: it is an 'archetypal human-animal' form. But even this is enigmatic. What is this strange, unusual creature - this archetypal human-animal? We are presented with a perplexing image and a puzzling description. In this original work, illustrated throughout with full-colour paintings and images - many by the author herself - Angela Lord takes us on a journey of discovery to realizing the meaning of Rudolf Steiner's painting. From Goethe's theory of metamorphosis in nature, we are introduced to Steiner's ideas of human evolution, from the primal beginnings of the archetypal human-animal on 'Ancient Moon'. Lord recounts myths and legends from many cultures that tell of human-animal forms, and reflects on the meaning of the fish in Christianity. She takes us through a series of 'colour sequences' for repainting Steiner's human-animal motif, and includes appendices that summarize evolutionary phases of the earth and humanity from a spiritual-scientific perspective. The Archetypal Human-Animal is both a valuable workbook for painters and a fascinating insight into hidden aspects of human evolution.Table of ContentsPrologue - PART ONE - Chapter One Goethe's Archetypal Animal - Chapter Two Goethe's Metamorphosis of Animals - PART TWO - Chapter One An Evolutionary Background - Chapter Two The Human Being on Ancient Moon: the primal beginnings of Archetypal Human-Animal - PART THREE - Chapter One The Human Being: Handiwork of the Gods - Chapter Two From Fire-Air to Air - PART FOUR - Chapter One The Animals: From the Cosmos Down to Earth - Chapter Two The Origin of the Animals - Chapter Three The Human-Animal Plant becomes Human - PART FIVE - Chapter One Myths and Legends: Monsters and Mermaids - Chapter Two A Cabinet of Curiosities - Chapter Three The Sphinx - PART SIX - Chapter One The Symbol of the Fish in Christianity - Chapter Two The Zodiac - Chapter Three The Evangelists - PART SEVEN - Chapter One The Colours of the Motif - Chapter Two An Approach to the Language of Colour - Appendix One Summary of Evolutionary Phases - Appendix Two Time Charts - List of Illustrations - References and Suggested Reading - Bibliography

Les Editions du Pacifique Rooftops of Paris sketchbook
Book SynopsisBooks on Paris are legion, but there is virtually none devoted to its rooftops and the vistas they look out into. Rooftops of Paris is an invitation to travel to a new and unfamiliar territory in a city filled with time-honoured historical and cultural icons that many are so familiar with. This volume of quirky but charming artwork, which provides a view of Paris as seen from its rooftops, represents the creative efforts of French illustrator Fabrice Moireau and Belgian writer Carl Norac. Moireau has undertaken a close study of Paris, surveying it at rooftop level with an entomologist’s eye for detail. In this book, he captures in watercolour the city’s lesser-known nooks and crannies, alongside the famous landmarks, offering unusual angles and new ways of seeing an iconic city. This other side of Paris – this levitated, almost unreal world – is an extravagant mass of ingenious shapes and forms that give protection from rain, wind and architectural monotony. The captions accompanying the paintings are rendered in Moireau’s own handwriting while the evocative and poetical text was crafted by Norac, an award-winning poet, playwright and author of children’s books. The writer goes beyond prosaic description to capture some of the wild and poetic imaginings inspired by these rooftops.
