Book SynopsisOne of Europe’s most beautiful cities is celebrated through the talents of artist Fabrice Moireau Venice, a mosaic of over 100 islands, many connected by the 400 bridges which span its famous canals, is possibly the most romantic city in the world. It began as a village in the marshes and grew into a formidable sea power, dubbed the Queen of the Adriatic. Now its fading glories - the canals and palaces, monuments and churches — battle with the elements, yet remain breathtakingly beautiful. Artist Fabrice Moireau showcases Venice's grand attractions and hidden charms through his watercolour paintings and pencil sketches.

Les Editions du Pacifique Garden of Paris sketchbook

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisParis and its gardens is no less beautiful than its streets, squares and palaces, and Paris without its gardens would not be the most visited capital in the world. Few large cities can boast such a rich variety of gardens as Paris. The picturesque rubs shoulders with the geometric, the most modern designs stand side by side with the ancient layouts and manners, and exotic species have been so well acclimatized that they have become commonplace. This is without forgetting the innumerable private gardens, sometimes reduced to a window box on a balcony, sometimes vast and secret. Such is the prodigy that a two-thousand-year-old culture has managed to accomplish.

  • LéOn Bonvin (1834–1866): Drawn to the Everyday

Fondation Custodia LéOn Bonvin (1834–1866): Drawn to the Everyday

    15 in stock

Book SynopsisThis beautiful publication presents a catalogue raisonné of Léon Bonvin’s work published in both French and English. Introduced by several illuminating essays and accompanying an exhibition at the Fondation Custodia, this book enriches our understanding of the previously overlooked, yet immensely talented, French artist. Léon Bonvin never enjoyed the same notoriety as his half-brother, Francois (1817–1887), who was a well-regarded realist painter in the nineteenth century. He is characterised from the few remaining sources as misunderstood and ill-fated. As he was struggling to make a living, Bonvin took over his father’s inn in Vaugirard, while continuing to paint watercolours. His work, depicting wild flowers, still lifes and views of the still rural and working-class plain exhibit a deep sincerity. This catalogue raisonné is introduced by a series of essays, the outcome of intensive research that sheds new light on the life and art of Bonvin. Weisberg delivers two essays, a study of his career, and an exploration of contemporary receptions to his art. Luijten’s essay questions the artistic inspiration that Bonvin drew upon. Briggs considers the transatlantic appeal of Bonvin’s works whilst Guichané and Quentin explore his character and artistic practice. The catalogue documents all known works by the artist, which are scattered throughout public and private collections, mainly in the United States of America and France. Among these are many drawings which have never been published before. Together, the essays and comprehensive catalogue of his works, provide an essential foundational knowledge upon which an appreciation of Bonvin’s magnificent oeuvre may be built.

  • Carl Haag: Victorian Court Painter and Travelling

De Gruyter Carl Haag: Victorian Court Painter and Travelling

    1 in stock

Book SynopsisThe painter Carl Haag (1820–1915) gained acclaim for his colorful scenes of the Orient and true-to-life portraits, in which Nubian slaves, Arabian camel drivers or Egyptian snake charmers enliven the visual topography. After attending art school in Nuremberg, the son of a baker advanced to become a sought-after portraitist in Munich, and later refined his art with watercolor painting in Brussels and London. As court painter to the duke of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, he worked for Britain’s Queen Victoria. His watercolors that portray the life of the royal family in the Scottish Highlands are now part of the royal collection. Always searching for new motifs, Haag traveled extensively through Europe. In 1859 he headed to the Orient, visiting Cairo, Jerusalem, Damascus, Palmyra and Baalbek. In this first biography about the painter, Walter Karbach conveys a vivid impression of society in the Victorian age, discussing Haag’s artistic influences, personal preferences, as well as his artist friends and patrons. At the same time, he elicits enthusiasm for Haag’s landscape sketches, portraits and drawings of ruins, which oscillate between documentary representations and romantic or idealized scenic views.

Book SynopsisFew other artists have shaped the image of Spain abroad around 1900 as much as Ignacio Zuloaga (1870-1945): proud toreros and spirited flamenco dancers; the simple life of the rural population, ascetics and penitents in vast, barren landscapes, and beggars, diminutive people and witches who invoke the legacy of old masters such as Diego Velázquez and Francisco de Goya. In times of massive industrialisation and Spain’s increasing orientation towards European modernism, Zuloaga aimed to preserve the “Spanish soul” with such scenes. The artist’s painting was celebrated internationally during his lifetime. This volume is the first comprehensive monographic publication on the artist to appear in German. • Walton Ford. 40th Ed.

Taschen GmbH Walton Ford. 40th Ed.

    3 in stock

Book SynopsisAt first glance, Walton Ford’s large-scale, highly detailed watercolors of animals recall the prints of 19th-century illustrators John James Audubon and Edward Lear. A closer look reveals a complex and disturbingly anthropomorphic universe, full of symbols, sly jokes, and allusions to the ‘operatic’ quality of traditional natural history. In this stunning but sinister visual universe, beasts and birds are not mere aesthetic objects but dynamic actors in allegorical struggles: a wild turkey crushes a small parrot in its claw; a troupe of monkeys wreaks havoc on a formal dinner table; an American buffalo is surrounded by bloodied white wolves. In dazzling watercolor, the images impress as much for their impeccable realism as they do for their complex narratives.First available as a signed and limited volume, this updated edition of Pancha Tantra is the most comprehensive survey of Ford’s oeuvre to date, with more than 20 new works. It features dazzling details, an in-depth exploration of his visual universe, a complete biography, and excerpts from his textual inspirations: from Indian folktales and the letters of Benjamin Franklin to the Autobiography of Benvenuto Cellini and Audubon’s Ornithological Biography.Trade Review“Walton Ford’s draftsmanship has Dürer’s woodcut muscularity, and his ambitious compositions have the sweep of Delacroix or Géricault.” * Men’s Vogue *“Think John James Audubon crossed with Hieronymus Bosch.” * Vogue *“Ford’s work in all its gory‚ hyper-real glory.” * Los Angeles Times *

Book SynopsisIn May of 1832 Swiss artist Karl Bodmer (1809-93) set out with Maximilian, Prince of Wied, on a twenty-eight-month expedition along the Ohio and Missouri Rivers. Along the way, Bodmer produced more than four hundred watercolours and sketches of Native American people, landscapes, animals, and plants. Engravings of many of the images were subsequently used to illustrate Travels in the Interiors of North America, Prince Maximilian's well-known historical account. Paying homage to the great painter who captured for the rest of the world so many important natural details of early America, Karl Bodmer presents all eighty-one engravings used to illustrate Maximilian's book, as well as the original watercolours, sketches, and photographs collected during the passage. Bodmer's detailed work is among the most important documents of Native American culture of the nineteenth century, and this richly illustrated volume brings to life a monumental event in both art history and the history of early America. Book SynopsisThis book is an excellent tool for learning to sketch on location. Through the "no drawing first" technique, readers will learn to use only watercolour and a brush to draw in notebooks, make quick urban sketches, keep visual journals and create compelling outdoor urban work. Designed like a workshop on the go, with more than fifty progressive exercises, this book invites you to experiment with watercolour by translating space and movement through shapes and color into masses and values rather than contours and strict rules of perspective. The author, a theatrical scenic painter, urban sketcher and urban sketching teacher, shows you how to represent the world around us. She encourages the reader to observe the place, to understand it, to learn how to choose the subject when capturing the place’s soul, preserving the sense of the fleetingness of the instant described. The themes include vegetation, buildings, forms of people in movement and stop-motion.

Book SynopsisThis hands-on guide to landscape watercolour and other drawing and painting techniques takes readers on a series of excursions from the sea to the city, mastering the use of line and colour along the way. A useful manual for drawing on the spot, it offers valuable insight into how to carefully observe the landscape before us and choose what about it we want to express; how to select and prioritize visual information; and how to apply drawing techniques to create the illusion that our compositions have been arranged effortlessly, as if by nature itself. In each of the book’s five sections (Colour and Materials; Horizontality and Depth; Graphics, Shadows and Light; Lines and Perspective; and Urban Lines and Colours), the author suggests some of the questions we should ask ourselves when observing a landscape. We will learn how to tell a story while painting, prioritizing colour ratios and graphic elements over faithful representation in the final result. Through these engaging exercises, readers will soon be able to manage compositional line and color effectively as they experiment with different drawing, painting and landscape representation tools and techniques.

Five Continents Editions Samuel Hieronymus Grimm (1733-1794): A Very

    Out of stock

Book SynopsisProbably no artist was more prolific among 18th-century topographers than Grimm in recording the landscapes and historic buildings of Great Britain, and none played a more important role. Born near Bern in Switzerland, Samuel Hieronymus Grimm studied under various teachers before deciding to move to London in 1768, where he remained for the rest of his life. A talented watercolour artist, he earned an impressive reputation among his clients as a quick, accurate painter. The most important of his patrons was Sir Richard Kaye, who retained Grimm's services for nearly two decades and during this period accumulated over 2,600 drawings and watercolours. Grimm was a tireless traveller, ranging far and wide over Britain and creating works of various kinds, from simple landscapes to highly detailed and now invaluable scenes of daily rural life. While in London, Grimm also revealed an unexpectedly sharp, witty side to his talent, publishing a series of political caricatures and drawings satirising the society of the time and its fashions. Some of Grimm's most conspicuous commissions came from the Society of Antiquaries, which was keen to build a visual record of historical monuments at risk of being destroyed. In spite of the considerable success he enjoyed during his lifetime, his reputation quickly faded thereafter and the exhibition held in the Kunstmuseum in Bern in 2014 was the first show devoted entirely to his work. The accompanying monograph by Dr. William Hauptman restores Grimm to his rightful place in the history of British painting.
