St. Martin's Publishing Group The Great Prostate Hoax How Big Medicine Hijacked
Book SynopsisEvery year, more than a million men undergo painful needle biopsies for prostate cancer, and upward of 100,000 have radical prostatectomies, resulting in incontinence and impotence. But the shocking fact is that most of these men would never have died from this common form of cancer, which frequently grows so slowly that it never even leaves the prostate. How did we get to a point where so many unnecessary tests and surgeries are being done? In The Great Prostate Hoax, Richard J. Ablin exposes how a discovery he made in 1970, the prostate-specific antigen (PSA), was co-opted by the pharmaceutical industry into a multibillion-dollar business. He shows how his discovery of PSA was never meant to be used for screening prostate cancer, and yet nonetheless the test was patented and eventurally approved by the FDA in 1994. Now, doctors and victims are beginning to speak out about the harm of the test, and beginning to search for a true prostate cancer-specific marker.

To his anguish, he repeatedly found himself unable to perform sexually. And, regardless of strenuous workouts, his body struggled to build muscle, earning him the nickname Pear from his macho teammates. JP Medical Ltd Handbook of Urinary Stents: Basic Science and
Book SynopsisUrologists have long used urinary stents in patients who have - or who are at risk of developing - an obstruction or blockage of the kidney. These rodlike devices are inserted into the ureter to keep the canal open or to help with healing after trauma, surgery or radiotherapy. More recently the use of stents for the prostate and urethra has also become more widespread, despite poor results in first generation models. Constant development has led to the introduction of second generation stents with a variety of designs, materials and coatings. These have gone a long way to counter the traditional side effects such as irritation, hematuria, infection and encrustation. Handbook of Urinary Stents has been written to provide urologists with a practical guide to the various new models for stenting. The book describes the various stents available; the criteria for their selection; their clinical application and potential complications of use. At the same time, the book provides thorough descriptions of relevant physiology and pathophysiology for those requiring deeper understanding of the subject. Key Points Provides a comprehensive, timely review for urologists needing an accessible guide to the range of stents available Chapters highlight the use of stents in special populations such as children and patients with transplanted ureter Emphasis on clinical complications following the use of stents and how to manage them effectively Table of Contents1 History of ureter stents 2 Physiology of stent flow 3 Stent materials and designs 4 Stent coatings 5 Indications 6 Insertion - tips and tricks 7 Stent complications and how to deal with them 8 How to deal with the heavily encrusted stent 9 Medical therapy of stent-related LUTS 10 Stents in children 11 Stents in pregnancy 12 How not to forget the stent 13 QoL with stents 14 The role of metal in the world of stents 15 The Memokath stent 16 The Resonance stent 17 The ureter metal mesh stent 18 The Allium stent 19 The UventaTM stent 20 Complications of metal stents in the ureter 21 Pathophysiology of encrustation in metal stents 22 Prophylactic SWL on metal stents 23 QoL in metal stents 24 Stenting the transplanted ureter 25 Using a metal stent in management of benign ureteroenteric anastomotic strictures in Bricker deviation 26 Biodegradable ureter stents 27 Drug eluting ureter stents 28 History of lower urinary tract stenting 29 The ideal stent 30 Physiology of urethral flow 31 Indications 32 Temporary prostate stents 33 The Memokath prostate stent 34 The Urolume prostate stent 35 The Allium prostate stent 36 The Spanner prostate stent 37 Complications of prostate stents 38 The future role of prostatic stents 39 Indications 40 The Allium urethra stent 41 The urethra stent and detrusor sphincter dyssynergia (DSD) 42 The urethra stent and radiotherapy 43 The urethra stent and brachytherapy 44 The future role of urethra stents 45 Biodegradable stents of the lower urinary tract 46 What's in the pipeline for the future?

Nova Science Publishers Inc An Outline of Office-Based Bladder and Prostate
Book SynopsisThis book is intended for urologists and pathologists who practice in an office setting. In this setting, bladder and prostate diseases are most commonly encountered. Therefore, bladder and prostate biopsy and urine cytology specimens are frequently obtained by urologists, which require pathologists assistance to interpret. In the office setting, communication between urologists and pathologists becomes feasible, which is paramount for accurate diagnosis and better patient management. For this purpose, this book includes clinically relevant information for pathologists, concise pathology terminology, and diagnostic tests for urologists. This book describes the common clinical and pathological entities, and is written in a bullet format for easy and quick reference. For visual review, over 150 diagrams, histologic images, and other images are included. The first and second chapters describe bladder and prostate diseases, focusing on clinical-pathological correlation. Therefore, this book is also useful for pathology and urology residents in training, in preparation for board examination(s), or as a refresher reference for recertification. The third chapter is dedicated to office-based pathology laboratory services, which outlines laboratory instrumentation, procedures, and regulatory requirements. This information is useful for urologists and pathologists who are involved in the management of an office-based pathology laboratory. Finally, I greatly appreciate Josephine Wu DDS, Esq. and Miao Cui MD, MS, who contributed to this excellent third chapter.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Hemodialysis, When, How, Why
Book SynopsisThis book with its most comprehensive and illuminating chapters covers all the relevant areas of hemodialysis practice including access for hemodialysis, hemodialysis modeling and membranes, timing of hemodialysis, infections in hemodialysis, the application of hemodialysis in extra-renal disease, the various formats of hemodialysis from nocturnal through SLED to apheresis and the wearable artificial kidney, convective hemodialysis methodologies, and various clinical aspects of hemodialysis including protein-calorie-malnutrition, inflammation, haemoglobin stability and sleep disorders in ESRD patients and so on. Furthermore, the inclusion of such new topics as the syndrome of rapid-onset end stage renal disease (SORO-ESRD), and the place of reduced HBV testing among ESRD patients in regions with less de novo HBV incidence to cut down on costs of delivery of hemodialysis care without loss of quality of care, are new paradigms that would play stronger roles in hemodialysis care, well into the 21st century.

Nova Science Publishers Inc Handbook of Genitourinary Medicine
Book SynopsisThis book presents review articles in the study of genitourinary medicine. Topics include basic research that investigates the epigenetic mechanisms in urogenital cancers; the role of matrix metalloproteinases in urothelial cancers; the role of toll-like receptor genes in prostate cancers; recent emerging and novel treatment modalities in advanced metastatic renal cell and bladder carcinomas; novel mouse models for studying malformations in the genitourinary tract; the role of tissue engineering in genitourinary regenerative medicine; and clinical management of patients with Vesicoureteric reflux. Apart from the very well-known Wilms tumour (a form of paediatric hereditary kidney tumours), little is known about paediatric nephritic syndrome and their genetic causes and clinical manifestations. Hence, a special chapter has been included that describes the recent genetic technologies that identify gene mutations in patients with paediatric nephritic syndrome. The specific gene mutations found in these patients are often associated with rapid renal failures, disease progression and poor survival outcome. Each of the articles presented by authors from all over the world are renowned and experts in their own field of research. The authors are based either in research and/or a clinical setting and the articles are only a summary of the view points of each of these authors.

Thieme Medical Publishers Inc MRI of the Prostate: A Practical Approach
Book SynopsisLearn the fundamental principles and clinical applications of the diagnostic and risk assessment imaging test of choice for prostate cancer: prostate MRI Although prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men in the USA, it can be treated successfully if detected early. Disease management has gradually changed to a paradigm that relies on close monitoring through active surveillance in select patients, as well as ongoing refinements in treatment interventions, including minimally invasive procedures. This has resulted in a critical need for a more exacting methodology for performing targeted biopsies, assessing risk levels, and devising treatment strategies. Prostate MRI has emerged as the most precise, state-of-the-art imaging modality for prostate cancer diagnosis and management, thereby creating an immediate demand for radiologists to become proficient in its use. Conceived and edited by a leading authority, with contributions from renowned experts in the field, MRI of the Prostate: A Practical Approach is the first book to tackle this important topic. It provides an overview of the fundamentals of prostate MRI acquisition, interpretation, and reporting. Readers will benefit from a wide range of insightful perspectives gleaned from years of hands-on experience. Nova Science Publishers Inc Neutrophil Gelatinase-Associated Lipocalin: from
Book SynopsisAcute kidney injury (AKI), defined as an abrupt decrease in renal function over a period of hours to days, is a common complication among hospitalised patients with different acute diseases. Its incidence has been increasing in recent years and is reported to be very high especially in the acute settings. Since clinical signs and symptoms of acute renal damage are not specific, it is difficult to promptly distinguish AKI at the time of patient presentation. Currently the diagnosis of AKI requires serial assessment of laboratory tests over a period of several days, and is based mainly on the evaluation of serum creatinine (sCr) and decrease in urine output as supported by Risk, Injury, Failure, Loss, and End-Stage Kidney Disease (RIFLE) criteria, Acute Kidney Injury Network (AKIN) criteria, and the recent Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) practice guidelines for AKI. Such a need for repeated sCr evaluations and monitoring of urinary output for too long time after admission could therefore result in a diagnostic delay. With delays in diagnosis, clinicians miss opportunities to start appropriate treatment to minimise damage, and patients incur more severe AKI with subsequent greater risk of developing progression of renal damage leading to chronic kidney disease (CKD), dialysis and increased risk of severe cardiovascular diseases and death.

Taylor & Francis Ltd Textbook of Erectile Dysfunction
Book SynopsisErectile dysfunction (ED) affects 20-30 million American men, most of whom are over 50 years of age. In a UK-based study, 32% of British men had difficulty obtaining an erection, 20% with maintaining an erection. In recent years the physiology and pathophysiology of ED have changed our understanding of what ED is from a purely psychological-based disorder to a multifactorial one, with neurological, endocrinological, psychological factors and the role of the vascular system. Recently identified risk factors include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, spinal cord injury, smoking, depression, atherosclerosis, hypertension, pelvic surgery and trauma, pharmacological medications, arthritis, peripheral vascular disease, substance abuse, endocrine abnormalities and peptic ulcer disease. Many ED patients have a combination of these risk factors, thus exacerbating ED further. The treatment of ED was revolutionized in 1998 with the introduction of sildenafil. Beside these oral treatments, newer injectable agents are being investigated as are topical preparations. However, not all patients are tolerant of oral agents, many patients still require penile reconstruction with penile implants, an option with low complications and morbidity. There are options for all patients and this excellent, updated text, edited by some of the world's leading authorities - Culley Carson, Roger Kirby and Irwin Goldstein - discusses them all.Trade Review'This textbook provides a comprehensive review of the major aspects of erectile dysfunction, with contributions from the acknowledged experts in this field ... Springer London Ltd Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: A Multidisciplinary Approach
Book SynopsisThis book provides the most up-to-date and comprehensive aspects of evaluation and therapy of female pelvic floor dysfunction. It is edited by well-known international surgeons with clinical practices within one tertiary referral institution, the Pelvic Floor Center at Cleveland Clinic Florida in Weston (Fort Lauderdale), Florida which serves as a National and International referral center for women with symptomatic pelvic floor problems. Recognized worldwide for its excellence, Cleveland Clinic departments of Gynecology, Urology, and Colorectal Surgery have combined their expertise in producing this text. Focused on urinary incontinence & other voiding dysfunctions, fecal incontinence & other distal gastroenterologic problems, genital and rectal prolapse, & other recognized pelvic floor problems, the book should be of great interest to the practicing Gynecologist/Urogynecologist, Urologist, and Colorectal Surgeon as well as Sexual Dysfunction specialist, Gastroenterologist and Physical Therapist. Trade ReviewFrom the reviews: "The authors wanted the book to translate the concept of a center approach to diseases of the pelvic floor where experts from all the three specialties that manage pelvic floor disorders provide their input. Indeed the authors were successful in getting together experts from their centers to contribute to a nicely organized book that translate their vision. Overall this is a well organized book that fulfills the vision of combining all the diseases of pelvic floor disorders in one text. I like the idea of grouping the disease entities under common syndromes to all the organ systems. I think that the cross talk among the three different specialties that deal with pelvic floor disorders will definitely help our patient population and I hope that the concept of a unified center/specialty will become a widely adapted practice pattern for the same reason." (Adonis K. Hijaz, Doody Enterprises, Inc. - COPYRIGHT 2006) "The information provided in this publication will be of interest for an interdisciplinary approach to pelvic floor diseases; helpful not only for urologists but for all practitioners involved in the treatment of these patients." (Paul Meria, European Urology Today, August 2006, page 33) "This book deals with the pelvic floor as a whole, mixing urologic, gynaecologic and colorectal situations. This is in accordance with the multidisciplinary approach many centres try to set up today for the greatest benefit of the patients. … it could be of interest for the general surgeon or the trainee, looking for an easy and complete overview of this field." Mac Keith Press Management of Disorders of Bladder and Bowel
Book SynopsisClinics in Developmental Medicine No. 170 Elimination disorders (nocturnal enuresis, urinary incontinence and encopresis) are among the most common disorders of childhood. Some disorders are primarily genetically determined, in others environmental factors predominate. Also, the rate of comorbid behavioural disturbances differs greatly from one syndrome to another. Because of this variety and heterogeneity, each disorder requires specific approaches in assessment and treatment. This book provides an evidence-based overview of functional elimination disorders. It draws on the standardisation and terminology suggested by the International Children's Continence Society. Short case vignettes, photos and line drawings, as well as questionnaires and charts are provided. To enable a quick orientation for clinical purposes, each chapter is followed by summaries, guidelines and diagrams. It will be of interest to all professionals working in the field.Trade Review"[This book] is a bit of a treasure trove. It is difficult to imagine a better-researched volume ... .It is jam packed, even impacted with good bits.
